[newbie] Laptop touchpads Linux info

2001-11-21 Thread PENA FAMILY

I found this link while visiting the Synaptics.com for info on their
touchpad and see if it could help me with getting the touchpad to work for
Linux. They provided a link to a fella by the name of Bruce Kall. As usual
the info is in regards to RedHat installation, but that shouldn't really
matter. The fact is there is a driver for it, but it may be out of my
league
as for installing it and setting it up. If someone else happens to have the
Synaptics touchpad they can put it the link to good use.

Ok, I appreciate all your help.

I understand why I shouldn't use Software Manager for this particular
installation. One other thingafter I install these drivers from console
mode, should I edit my XF86Config-4 file as well, BEFORE rebooting?

and what should I do in case X will not start afterwards?

Re: [newbie] NVidia Drivers

2001-11-21 Thread R & C

One last question.

Why could I not install these rpm's like I do every other rpm...using Softare
Manager? Doesn't it do all the commands for me?

The Reason I ask is twofold.
1. IF, I would have looked sooner, I would have found that the old NVIDIA
drivers that are on the LM8 install disks can be installed this way.

and 2. Simplicity!

Thanks again,
Roger

[newbie] Networking

2001-11-21 Thread Frank McKenna

Hi All,

My Mandrake 8.0 box crashed and I ended up reinstalling the O/S.

I had my small LAN working and Samba was configured.

I just can't remember how I got my network settings configured. Spent too
much time setting up Samba to remember what I did to make everything else
work.

Anyhow, if someone could point me in the right direction it would be
apreciated.

The more detailed the better because I am still new to Linux.

Thanks in advance

Re: [newbie] formatting floppies

2001-11-21 Thread David E. Fox

floppies. floppies formatted in linux is generally unrecognizable by
Windows* just like the emergency bootdisk made during installation. or
 so I am said. ;-)

It depends on what you mean by 'fomatting'. Floppies in Windows are
formatted, but the filesystem is FAT, and it's laid down as part of
the formatting process. In Windows, this is a single step, and you
can't separate the function of formatting (writing format info and
verifying for bad blocks etc.) and the function of making the
filesystem.

In Linux, these are two separate steps. In fact, floppies don't need
to have filesystems on them. The boot floppy is one example although
there is a filesystem in that case. If you format (i.e., make the
filesystem) in Linux as FAT, you can read the disk in Windows. However,
Windows can't handle other filesystem formats, raw tar/cpio 'floppy
tapes' etc.

[newbie] NVidia Drivers

2001-11-21 Thread R & C

Hi All,

This is going to be a very elementary question...but it's my first time!

I'm going to try to install the NVidia Drivers from their website onto my
system. I find so much conflicting information in all the installatin guides
and readme files that I'm totally confused.

I have an idea of what I'm supposed to do but...?

First of all, I downloaded the following files, which by the way downloaded
into my home directory/home/me/ (is this correct?)

NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-1541.i386.rpm
NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-1541.mdk80up.i386.rpm

I'm relativley sure I have the correct files due to the fact that the only
other choice for LM is for SMP kernel, which from what I read is not what I
want. I have one CPU running LM8.0

Secondly, I'm told to exit the X server and set my default run level as to
boot to console and not start X?

Thirdly, am I "upgrading" or "installing"?

Lastly, Do I install/upgrade in sequence.ie: kernel first then glx?

Remember folks, I'm a virgin.take is easy on me, I'm trying!

TIA,
Roger

As a matter of fact, yes. But, I am convinced that it is the quality of the
disks themselves, not the operating system (I have the same problem with
Caldera, Suse, RH, Mdk7.2 and mdk 8.0). One box of disks (AT&T) were exactly
as you describe--I had 2 disks of 10 that formatted without errors. On the
average, I get about one disk a box that is fubar. However, I did get some
Sony disks a couple of months ago and had maybe one fail out of 50. I guess
the moral of this story is--you get what you pay for. As an aside, I tried a
few of the failed disks on Windows, and they failed there, too, after failing
the dos format on a Linux box. I know, this is all anecdotal evidence, but
it's what happened to me.

It depends what the file is. A "tar.gz" file is a file that is
compressed (kind of like zip or sit you may already be familiar with).
In order to access the files inside of a .tar.bz file, you must first
unextract them. In the case of .tar.bz, it's actually been compressed
twice, once using tar and once using bzip.

In order to unextract this file, open up a console window, or what is
called a shell (think of it as a window to your computer). While you
can always use graphical programs like archiver, you'll quickly discover
that in GNU/Linux, it is often much quicker and more convenient to do
operations in the shell, or what is also called the command line. It is
an extremely powerful tool that will save you no end of time, DOS it
ain't.

Anyway, in the command line, find your file named "*.tar.bz". You can
try "ls *.tar.bz" or "ls [name of your file]" or even "find -name [name
of your file]". Once you find it, type "tar -xvvzf [name of your
file].tar.bz". This opens the program "tar" and everything after the
dash are command paramters. In this case x is extract, vv for very
verbose (it will print to the screen what it is doing, z will extract
the file if it is bzipped as well which this one is, and f stands for
force, meaning it won't prompt you for every message.

Now, depending one what the file contained you'd do something
differently. If the file contained a bunch of pictures, for example,
you'd simply go into the new directory [file name] and be able to see
them. If the file contained a program, which is probably the most
common time you'd run across a "Tar Ball" or a ".tar.bz", then you need
to compile the program. Simply put, this means that the program you
downloaded is not a machine readable, "binary" that just installs, but
the source code or the list of commands that the program is really made
up of. In windows, for example, all programs are distributed as .exe
binaries. In Linux, you may use binaries as well, in Mandrake they are
called .rpm. Even though it takes an extra step or two, there are a lot
of advantages to installing programs from source code however. The most
important is, of course, the abillity to change the program to suit your
needs. And while this may seem far off in your learning, it may not
come that far down the road that you can see improvements you can make
in a program. Second, the program, once compiled, is specifically tuned
for your system.

In order to install a progam from source, you need to enter the porgrams
directoory, for example, by typing "cd [program's name, or name of new
folder created when you extracted your file]". Then type "./configure".
This runs the configuration script. The "./" is used to run a program
in the current directory (it is used for security reasons. After a
bunch of characters fly by, type "make". Some more characters will fly
by. Now you need to go to superuser mode, type "su", and when prompted
enter your root user's password. Now you can type "make install" and
your program will be installed.

I highly recomend you install a program called "checkinstall". (Go to
http://www.freshmeat.net and do a search for "checkinstall") This will
create a customized rpm for your system from the source code, which
makes it easier to install and uninstall programs from source. Read the
program's readme and install files for more info.

Sorry if this was too elementary, I thought it might be a good idea to
take it slow.

There are hundreds of good books and websites with Unix/Linux basic
information as well.

Also, there are a number of documentation files on your system you
should be aware of.

1. The man pages. WHen there is a program you would like to learn how
to use, type "man program name". For example, type "man tar" o learn
more about the tar program and what it can do. Also try "info tar".
You can also do "man man" to learn more about the man command. Or "man
ls".

2. A program called apropos, and another called whatis, try them with
man.

3. The Mandrake documentation itself, included in the Documentation
menu in your menus.

Good luck.

hi,

refer to my previous answer. there exists a xinetd executable in the /usr/sbin which
is in the root PATH. you should execute the script located at /etc/rc.d/init.d / which
is not in the PATH variable. if you enter "xinetd restart" then you are referring to
the one in sbin. either you enter the fullpath of the xinetd script located at the
init.d directory or just go there and do "./xinetd restart".

Re: [newbie] Question about installing a .tar.gz file

2001-11-21 Thread Michael D. Viron

Typically a .tar.gz file isn't directly installed. Instead, you usually:

1. run 'tar -xzvf whatever.tar.gz' from the command line
2. run './configure' (to configure it)
3. run 'make' (to compile)
4. run 'make install' (to install)

Chris,

This is part of the e-mail that cron sends on completion of the 'logcheck'
entry in /etc/cron.daily . Basically these are items to let you know that
something changed since the last time it ran. It is not a good idea to
disable it, and in fact is a good idea to check on the items it is
'warning' about. If you have more specific questions, don't hesitate to
send an e-mail to the list.

Re: [newbie] Mounting new HDD and creating new partitions.

2001-11-21 Thread Michael D. Viron

Tomek,

First, you need to create the new partition(s) on it. You can do this from
the command line by doing fdisk /dev/hdx --where x depends on where it is
on your ide cable (ide0 primary is hda, ide0 slave is hdb, ide1 primary is
hdc, ide1 slave is hdd).

After that, you need to create the filesystem by doing an mke2fs or
mkreiserfs depending on whether you want to use reiserfs or ext2.

Finally, you need to add a line in your /etc/fstab, and do a 'mount -a' --
make sure that your mount point in /etc/fstab exists and is not being used
by another partition--you can check which partitions are mounted by doing a
'df -h' or checking /etc/mtab.

At that point, once it has been mounted, you are ready to copy files to it.

hi,

yes it has something to do with the process of copying the disc from a burned disc.
my friend has one of those too ;-). it may not be great for installing but it is
usable for installing some packages on a mandrake system.

try downloading the isos. you only need the first but having the second
(recommended) and third (really optional, I only installed 2 or 3 packages from this
disc) wont hurt. check the md5sums of each before burning and select the option 'burn
from image' from your burning software.

hi gonzalo,

kindly relay to RomLi that the source that is being added may contain a 'malformed'
rpm. this is if the package does not conform to the Mandrake standard or if it is
corrupted.

try using the commandline to add a new source (i think user has to be root) like this

  urpmi.addmedia [source descriptive name] file://location/of/new/source/directory

if there will be an error in adding a new source then it will be shown in the
commandline. just remove the offending package and try again.

[newbie] ftp server jail settings

2001-11-21 Thread Anuerin G. Diaz

hi to all,

this is for neil but I figure that the list may want it to.

I am using proftd so those using other servers may need to read the manual that their
ftp server provides.

To prevent ftp users from roaming around the filesystem just add this line at the end
of /etc/proftd.conf (actually just modify the last commented line 8-)

DefaultRoot ~

this will effectively prevent users from changing to a directory higher than their
home directories. You can also change ~ to a directory that you want to be a
repository for uploads. there are other options to be used in the configuration but
since i dont have the time and the need then i recommend interested users to read the
Configuration.html. Mine is located at /usr/share/doc/proftpd-1.2.2.

[newbie] WINE rpm problem

2001-11-21 Thread Roger Sherman

I just did a full reinstall of 7.2, and then unzipped my backed-up /home
/bin /etc directories in their proper places. But now I'm having a problem
that has me baffled - when I installed, I specifically told it _not_ to
install wine, as I prefer codeweavers wine. So, I tried to rpm -ivh
codeweavers, and it told me it was already installed. Great! So I try to
run it, and it tells me its not installed. So, figuring theres a couple
pieces that got carried over in the backed up dirs, and some parts that
didn't, I try to uninstall whatevers left with rpm -e. It tells me its not
installed. So then I try rpm -replacepackages (however its worded), it
tells me its installed again! Won't work though...I try to force it, still
no go. Can anyone help?

peace,

Rog

This seems correct as far as it goes. In OS/2 Warp, the card also uses irq 9 and
several additional ioports.

Yes, I am using devfs.

When I issue the same ls command, I get "No such file or directory."

When I issue "ls -l /dev/mixer0" I see:

crw--- 1 root audio 14, 0 Nov 19 21:14 /dev/mixer0

I also have a /dev/mixer1, a /dev/mixer2, and a /dev/mixer3 . The ls -l command gives
similar output for them, except mixer1 is "0 Nov 19," mixer2 is "32 Nov 19," and
mixer3 is "48 Nov 19."

[newbie] Configuring a LAN card

I'm setting up an old PC with Mandrake 8.1. It has an Intel Etherexpress Pro

I've tried to configure the card using the Control Center, but when I try to
load the driver, it fails.

When I try using ifconfig at a root console, I get "no such device" and the
like.

I've checked the card with DOS test utilities and it seems to be fine. The IRQ
is set at 10 and the I/O address is 210.

What could I try next?

Thanks,

Corel has pulled wp8 from their site. You might want to check Cheapbytes
and see if they still sell a CDROM called "Applications Archive Edition

There is no such animal.

PM, any version, can only be installed if you are running Windows or DOS.
It does not run on linux and with linux it is limited to performing its
operations on Ext2 only, it will not work with ReiserFS and I would not trust
it with Ext3.

If you are wanting to resize/change partitions on a system running Linux,
there are several linux apps that can be used, depending upon your FS.
Do a search with google-linux for partitioning programs and that should
give you a starting point.

Their website is at www.powerquest.com, but I don't
know of any Linux version.

I used their version 7.0 to prepare Ext2 partions
not too long ago, and subsequently it became
impossible to boot into Linux again. I found out
later that their idea of Ext2 is a little different
than everybody else's. I think it mussed up the
partition table. But either way, it made a mess of
my system.

Use diskdrake, which comes with Mandrake.

Wordperfect8 has gone the way of Puff the Magic Dragon.

The only thing that Corel now offers or supports is WordPerfect Office, which
is over kill if all you want is a word proccesser and the Linux version can
run you $100+.

I lucked up and found WordPerfect8, retail box, on the closeout rack at a local
office supply store for $10 about a month ago.

The only thing I can tell you is to try searching some of the software vendors,
especially those that handle closeout and used products.

Just from the 'specs', not much. On paper the only real diference between a low-end

The main difference is the quality of the components and construction. 'server grade'
hardware is designed and warranted for 24x7 operation (even for a low-end server like
the PowerEdge 500SC or Proliant ML330)

Another benefit for 'server-grade' hardware, although it isn't quite as relevant for
Linux as it is for NetWare/SCO UNIX/ect. (and for a lesser extent, Windows NT/2000
Server) is that they are generally certified for use with the various operating
systems. The main benefit of this is that if you have a problem on your
Dell/Compaq/IBM/etc 'Server' and call up the vendor for tech support you are likely to
get an aswer like 'Yeah, there is a known problem with the BIOS revision on some units
on that model, go to the vendor's web site and download file xx and everything
should work fine once you apply the update' whereas if you had used a 'desktop'
computer the response (probabally from both the OS and hardware vendor) would be 'The
only operating systems supported on that model are Windows 98/ME/NT4.0 Workstation...'.

What exactly differentiates server grade hardware and desktop grade?

I ask this because checking out some Dell servers (just above the price
range for this project, but wrangleable) they seem to be pretty much the
same hardware I would find in a desktop computer. IDE drives for
example, and not even ATA/100/133 RAID.

Hmm... Thats a 3com driver isn't it. I'm using that one without any problems.
Is it a PCMCIA card?
You do not have NFS defined do you? That can cause hangs on power down.

Have you tried stopping the network before you shut down?

What are the last messages in the syslog. Any clues?

[newbie] "Boot error" after Installation of 8.1

2001-11-21 Thread Mike Myers

Last night I installed 8.1.  When I boot I get
only "Boot error" displayed on the screen.  I did create a boot floppy and
it will boot from that.  Prior to Mandrake I had free BSD
installed.

It is installed on an IBM 390X laptop with 128 MB
ram and 6.4 GB Drive.

I have installed it twice now with the same
result.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You create cd from image. The .iso is a disk image, you need to tell your
software that. If you are using windows something like easy cd creator or
Nero for example. There is a selection in one of the menus with something
like create cd from image or similar.

What does 'cat /proc/asound/cards' report? Do you use devfs (it's standard
in LM8.1) ? You unmute channels with a mixer but your problem is the mixer
complains about /dev/mixer. When I boot with devfs I get this:

[frans@amd frans]$ ls -l /dev/mixer
lr-xr-xr-x1 root root   11 Nov 21 18:29 /dev/mixer -> sound/mixer
[frans@amd frans]$ ls -l /dev/sound/mixer
crw---1 fransaudio 14, 0 Jan 1 1970 /dev/sound/mixer
[frans@amd frans]$

Btw, I normally boot without devfs (there was some security issue IIRC) and
sound then also works well. Anyway, I think the ALSA driver loads OK, OSS
emulation is set up correctly, but there can be problems with using/not using
devfs, permissions, the use of a sound daemon like esd ... I can only wish
you the best :)

I read a post in french (!) on the alsa-user list (!) recently from someone
who lost sound after his 'upgrade' to Windows XP

[newbie] Whereis WordPerfect??

Before I wiped out my partitions with a clean install of the very wonderful

What's the current version (or most recent anyway) and where might I find it??

[newbie] Digital cameras, usb and devfs

2001-11-21 Thread Terry Smith

Hi all,

I've gotten way behind on my emails on this list. A while back (before
Mandrake 8.1) there was some discussion of gphoto, gphoto2, creating and then
directly mounting a digital camera directory, etc. I understood most of it.

Now I understand that under LM 8.1, the new kernel and devfs there's a
different treatment of the usb ports. I don't understand the new stuff.

Let me get to the bottom line. I want to access my digital camera - Canon
PowerShot S10 - and would prefer to attach via a USB port. Gphoto insists
that I specify a serial port.

I 've mucked around in the /dev directory and don't see anything that looks
like a usb port.

Would somebody please point me in the right direction?

TIA.

If you happen to have your system set up as a dual boot system -- with
windows on it.you can import the fonts from the windows partition and use
those.

You must use the option to "Burn from ISO image". Just copying the ISO file
to a cd image won't work. Most CD burner software packages have this option
somewhere.

Re: [newbie] Apache + Perl5 + PHP406

2001-11-21 Thread Stephen Liu

Hi,

Sorry to cut in. Reading your posting I have certain questions to
ask. Kindly help .

1) Some line begins with ' > ' similar to answering a posting. What do
they represent for ?

such as
 > ./configure \
 > --with-apache=../apache_1.3.19 \
 > --with-crt=/etc/ssl/certs/server.crt \
 > --with-key=/etc/ssl/private/server.key

2)
An Asterisk * marked after an application such as Apache*, PHP*, Mod*,
etc., do we need them in the config file ?

3)
Some line begins with #, Is this line only for explanation not involving
configuration (not executing commands) ?

4)
In following NOTE:
Copy the httpd.conf file to the "/etc/httpd/conf/" directory.
Copy the apache file to the "/etc/logrotate.d/" directory.
Copy the httpd script file to the "/etc/rc.d/init.d/" directory.

Where can apache file and httpd script be located ?

Thanks in advance.

Use the guidelines for installing a kernel at
http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/install/index.html#ku
One suggestion I'd add is to make a bakup copy of your /boot
directory before you do anything. Just in case ;)

If you want to compile your own, all you really need is the kernel
source and header rpms. Install these instead of MUO's (page 3) "Run
tar xfzC [kernel-source].tar.gz" step. Any Mandrake 2.4.x kernel
requires that you start with 'make mrproper', so start back in with
the guidelines at that point. You could then copy in a saved copy of
Mandrakes default config (or a current config you have), and run
'make xconfig' and change any options you want/need to. Save a bakup
of that config for future use.

I haven't bothered with compiling kernels from source for quite a
while. I never saw any benefit to changing from i586 to i686 or
Athlon, and I've haven't needed any special requirements that aren't
already in Mandrakes 2.4.x ready made kernels for some time now.
I just install their ready made and if all is well, I then d/l and
install the source and header rpms for it in case I might need 'em.

[newbie] DVD on 8.1

2001-11-21 Thread Gerard van Winssen

Hi,

I've installed 8.1 on my systyem more more or less succesfully.
I haven't configured everything yet, first things first.
The DVD drive won't work, I read some postings on mandrakeforum and the DVD
playing howto.
With VLC installed and running, and with A movie rom in th drive I klick the
play button, but nothing happens.
I launched VLC from A terminal to see errors coming by, but no errors.
This is what I have done:
-Made A simlink; # ln -s /dev/hdc /dev/dvd
-Removed the "devfs=mount" in lilo.conf (for my cdrw)
- Did A #hdparm -i /dev/dvd what shows up is all kind of info about my DVD
drive.
-The dvd drive has the latest firmware.

Anybody any suggestions?

cpu=Athlon c 1000
dvd= LG DRD 8120 B (hdc)
mem= 256 mb
cdrw= Mitsumi 4802TE (hdd)

PHP does come on the Mandrake CDs, but it does not necessarily install
unless you choose a server setup. Just use the Software Manager to
install the PHP packages from CD.

Samba includes a simple smb.conf file that is self-documented. I based
three of my Samba setups on that file, with a few modifications.

Maybe you could tell us exactly what part you are having trouble with
(creating a shared printer, making a public shared folder, making a
private share, etc.), so we can give you some specific advice.
Otherwise, my smb.conf might not do you any good.

> I need help again on Linux Command. Does anyone know what is the

'locate 123456' If you want to make locate case insensitive, use
'locate -i ' (see 'man locate' for other options)

BUT, locate will only find files that are currently in the
database. If you don't leave your system on overnight, or you just
installed/created some files, your db isn't updated, and you'll need
to run (as root) 'updatedb' in order for locate to find newer files.
'locate -u' as root also can be used to update the db. Either
command could take a few minutes to complete if you have a slow
system and a lot of files.

Tip: if you dual boot Windoze and it's on a fat16 or fat32
partition, edit the last line in /etc/updatedb.conf and remove any
'vfat' entry. It'll then probly look somethin like this

PRUNEFS="nfs,smbfs,ncpfs,proc,devpts,supermount,iso9660,udf,usbdevfs,devfs"

To further explain, any of the filesytems in this line will not be
scanned during an 'updatedb', and likewise 'locate' won't see 'em.
After removing 'vfat', (and 'updatedb') locate can find Windoze files
too.

[newbie] VM Ware

2001-11-21 Thread Caspar Kennerdale

I am on windows 2000 at work and have a copy of vmware

I have a cd copy of a bootbale version of manadrke 7.1 from a friend of
mine- this was successfully used to install on a 'virgin PC'

However on VMware it doesnt recognize the CD- initially it says
'there is no bootable CD' so I have made a boot floppy.

This seems to read the floppyt , starts t read the cd and after a few
minites gives the message ' this is not a mandrake cd'

does anyone have any ideas? is this because the cd is a copy

shall i download an iso from a mandrake mirror?

do I need all three if so- the inst, ext and supp iso's

thanks in advance

RE: [newbie] Hack My Linux

2001-11-21 Thread David ..

The only problem with most firewalls, atleast mine, is that if you do a scan
within your 'intranet' all ports(well not all, but the important ones) will
be found open. You need to have someone outside of your network do the scan.
If I was the run the app within, then it would show that the firewall is
WIDE open. On the internet, well differenet story.

He says that he can't add new sources to install rpm packages throw software
manager, not even a floppy or other folder.

If it's Mandrake 8.0, i believe that software manager was broken in that
version (si es en Mandrake 8.0, esa vesión de Sofware Manager estaba rota)

Not unless you downgrade your kernel, but dont even think about it :)

You can use both the src.rpm's or the tar.gz's . They do work.
Also keep in mind, if you will upgrade your kernel, you will need to
reinstall them again.

hi,

you dont have any compilers and development packages installed.
try installing some of the packages in the Development branch of the Software
Manager (rpmdrake). Its probably in  the first LM installation discs.
or if you have gcc (and others) then you dont have them in your
PATH variable.
try one of the following commands
1)  rpm -qa | grep gcc
    there should be some entries
referring to the gcc packages if you have them installed.
2) find /usr -name gcc*
same as above but this is on the offchance that gcc
was installed from a tarball.
if both yield nothing then its time to bring out your installation discs.
ciao!

Re: [newbie] Firewall Log Question

2001-11-21 Thread Derek Jennings

These are all on ports 137 and 138 which are reserved for :-

netbios-ns 137/tcpNETBIOS Name Service
netbios-ns 137/udpNETBIOS Name Service
netbios-dgm 138/tcpNETBIOS Datagram Service
netbios-dgm 138/udpNETBIOS Datagram Service

Perhaps you are running Samba?
If so you could block of those addresses in your Samba config.
