Hi,

I am getting this error ( along with a long list of errors) on bootup.

" ... dev/hda6 was not cleanly unmouted .."

I checked http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/admin/amount3.html#fsck

it indicated that either 1) i haven't run shutdown before turning the
machine off or 2) or were forced to reboot the machine because of a system
freeze

neither one is true.

I was wondering how I can begin to fix this problem.

thanks in advance.

This sounds as though you have some conflicting software going on as / user.
Have you installed all O.K? Something didn't quite finish how you wanted?
Until then you will get this message. Post some of error messages , they may
give more ideas as to what is wrong and i,ll try again. Regards

You can turn logging on thru the Internet Dialer. One of the tabs
 lets you set up logging.
cant tell you exactly which one as I'm connected at the moment, If
you can't find it, let me know and I'll give you a full description
 when I log off :)

Well if it was me,I'd run an update and not install anything new. I've had

[newbie] internet dialer logging option

hi,

how do i turn on the logging option of the internet dialer? im using a dial-up
connection at home to different prepaid servers and it would help a lot if i could
keep track of the total time (per second if i can) that i spent with which ISP. i cant
figure out how to use the log dialog that comes with the dialer so any tips and hints
will be greatly appreciated.

thanks!

Re: [newbie] not enough space on tmp? / archives for this list?

2001-12-09 Thread Anuerin G.Diaz

hi,

i also met this during the installation of staroffice. tmp is usually mounted in the
/ partition. in my case i just gave / about 100MB and it was getting used up (the
clean tmp at boot option doesnt seem to work). one work-around is to create another
temporary tmp folder for your user (in your home directory if it has the space to
spare) and set the TMP environment variable to point to that location so every program
that the user does is placed there.

when the opportunity arises (when you need to reinstall), add more space to your
root partition or create a tmp partition suitable enough for big installations (a
little bit overkill because the work-around provided above is more efficient since not
all installations use up the tmp space.)

[newbie] Kernal Panic

2001-12-09 Thread irl60

Hi list

Oh man have I done it this time!
I am using LM 8.1. I was trying to install a local printer, went to the
printer setup in Hardrake, than half way through that when I was asked to
name the printer the system froze. I used Xkill to close the window, and
tried to start it all over again, but no luck it died again, but this time
I couldn't even use Xkill, so I hit the reset switch, and up came a bunch
of stuff starting with the word init.
Tried to reboot again and this time it said: Kernal Panic: No Init found.
Try passing init= option to Kernal.
Do I have to do a re-install without formatting, or maybe there is some
'geeky' magic stuff I can do at the konsole eh? What do you guys think?
Please help, it was all going so well.

just wondering if anyone's gotten cvs working right out of the box?

here's what i did so far:

-created a new repository in /etc/cvs/repos
-in /etc/cvs/cvs.conf, set CVSROOT=/etc/cvs/repos

when i go to mandrake control center and click on system/services and then
on "cvs", it says "unrecognized service". cvs always appears as "stopped"...

any recommendations?

commands at the UNIX command line prompt before running this
installer again:

  $ IATEMPDIR=/your/free/space/directory
  $ export IATEMPDIR
- for C shell (csh) and tcsh:
  $ setenv IATEMPDIR /your/free/space/directory

i have a 40gb hard drive and just recently set up my system, so i don't
know how this could happen. i don't remember the allocations that i did
when i installed mandrake, but i set it up for a server configuration and
don't believe that i modified it (much) from the default settings.

beside the solution prompted above (using the IATEMPDIR env), what are my
options?

can i delete all the files in /tmp? i saw that some of those files had
locks on them...

also, how can i quickly find out how much space is available on the hard
drive/partition? is there a quick command, or do i have to go to linuxconf
everytime?

Your question brings up other cautions. From the list of mirrors
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/cookerdevel.php3 sooner or later you
might just find that they're not all, always updated the same. I find
the European mirrors to be the best updated. I like the Netherlands
mirrors, YMMV.

Currently, 2.4.16-6mdk is the cooker kernel. 2.4.13 is old hat, and
dropped from the mirrors. BUT, there's other issues involved. If you
install a cooker kernel, you'd best do well to either lurk on the cooker
ML, or at least search the cooker ML archive first, to see what's goin on.
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=mandrake-cooker

Often problems are fixed, but also introduced as the patch level (eg,
-5mdk) increases. They are, after all, for testing purposes. I believe
the only way you can judge for yourself when to jump in is to monitor
cooker. Even then, it's best to make a backup of your /boot directory,
and make sure you install the new kernel with 'rpm -ivh' so as not to
override your current kernel. That done, you can always undo the new
kernel if it's not workin out. You should also have handy the rpm of the
current kernel you're runnin, as you might need to force it back in ('rpm
-ivh --force').

To save ya' a little time, 2.4.16 -2mdk thru -6mdk have some s-link
issues with /usr/src/ and /lib/modules ... so I'd wait a bit. Specially
since a cooker kernel will work better on a ML system than vanilla source
(development, also for testing, and not patched for ML) from kernel.org ;>

I've been usin kernel-2.4.16.1mdk for some time, no problems. BUT, it

Now I have set up a samba server but there are still some problems.

When I click home directory I get a network icon in the left field.
Under that is ftp archive, local network and web sites. I guess my
windows machine should show up under local network. But what I get there
is just "could not connect to host localhost". Am I looking in the wrong
place or is it a configuration problem?

---

You are using Konqueror to browse your network.

In turn Konqueror relies upon three things being set up properly,

1) Samba itself
2) Lisa/Reslisa
3) You user logins in the K-Control panel

Komba is easier to use.

---

>From the windows side I can find the linux machine and read/write in the
samba-public folder. The problem is that I can not write in samba-public
folder from within linux.

---

Samba "folders" are merely pointers to real Linux folders you have set
up.

It sounds like you have not set any up yet!

---

How do I share another folder?

---

By adding a new entry starting with

[sharename]

In /etc/samba/smb.conf.

---

And is it possible to get read/write access to the samba-public folder?

---

You already have access to everything in Linux. Samba does NOT have it's
own folders hidden somewhere.

Rather you can have a share called [public] which points to a directory
somewhere within your Linux machine's hard drive.

Where this is, is up to you to decide.

Re: [newbie] What are the environment variables?

2001-12-09 Thread tek1

environment variables store certain settings/values that are needed by
programs on your machine. it allows you to specify the settings/values in
a central location. environment variables are usually stored in
/etc/profile (for access by all users) or /home/user/.bashrc (for access by
only "user").

for example, a lot of programs that use java need to know where your java
virtual machine (jvm) is located.

you can store the location of your jvm in the environment variable in one
of the above files as:

JAVA_VM=/usr/java/jvm/sun/131_01/bin
export JAVA_VM

then, a program, which needs to know where you jvm is located, you can
simply specify (in one that application's configuration files) $JAVA_VM.

also, when you change the path for your JAVA_VM, you won't have to update

in short, environment variables can be thought of as a type of alias...

Well, you can use lisa to set up the network browsing, browse from the
command line, or, you can install LinNeighborhood (on the 8.1 second disk).
LinNeighborhood allows non-root users to access network shares--you will have
to do a chmod +s to /usr/bin/smbmnt, /usr/bin/smbmount, and
/usr/bin/smbumount, though. Once installed you will find it in
Networking>Other.

To allow everyone to access the /home/public share, as root#chmod 2777
/home/public. I'm not really clear where your public folder is located, so I
used /home/public as my example.

Yes I have already added the DNS servers into resolve.conf (you can
actually do that via NetConf as well) and it still isn't working. It was
working before on its own IP and it just decided to "stop" working for
some reason. I haven't changed anything or installed anything on it to
prompt it, one day SETI@HOME was just unable to retrieve anymore work
units and the DNS issue was the problem.

My guess would be that your /etc/resolv.conf file is empty. If you were
receiving your DNS info via DHCP, then when you disabled DHCP you no
longer were receiving the IP addresses of your DNS servers. Enter them
in /etc/resolv.conf, and you should be good to go.

If it turns out that you already have the correct IP addresses for your
DNS servers in /etc/resolv.conf, I don't know what is going on.

Well, this is all from weak memory, but with older ML versions the
rpms were saved to a /...//grpmi/ folder. I don't remember the full
path, just that the directory was grpmi/. Now with 8.1, I just looked
and I don't have this dir. I also did a search for some rpms I know I
used Mandrake Update for, and they're not saved anywhere. So it appears
they were never saved, or saved to a location that is periodically
cleaned out. Either way, I have the upgrade rpms installed, but they're
not saved anywhere (eg, util-linux-2.11h-3.1mdk which IIRC, was a
security fix, is installed, but the rpm is no where on my HDD's).

The modem has been "flash upgraded" twice to see if the problem was local,
but it appears
it is at my ISP's end. They have altered something to cause the problem with
this modem
and how it handshakes. I have checked my cables, power supply, dial-up
connection strings
and most other stuff associated and the problem still points to my ISP, as I
have no
problem getting fast connections to 2 other ISP's I use for updating
websites I maintain.

Thanks for the suggestion tho :)

Well webmin is not going to work unless the webmin daemon is running, and of
course you will have to type https://192.168.1.5:1 since webmin uses ssh.
Does webmin work locally? Is your Win98 an allowed host in the webmin setup?
It will refuse to connect to any host not specifically allowed.

Secondly are you sure your firewall is not locking you out. You can stop it
with /etc/tc.d/init.d/bastille-firewall stop.

How about portsentry. Is that running?

Re: [newbie] filesharing with windows (samba)

2001-12-09 Thread Derek Jennings

If you want to see your windows network in your konqueror browser you will
have to set up LISa. There is a window in the KDE Control Centre to do this,
but you must start KDE Control centre as root.

It will create a file called /root/.kde/share/config/.lisarc which is your
LISa configuration.

Then to make LISA start on boot you must put the statement
lisa -c /root/.kde/share/config/.lisarc
at the end of your /etc/rc.local file.

Your konqueror should then browse the windows domain OK.

Even without installing LISa you can browse the windows machines in Konq by
typing
smb://windows_hostname_or_ip_address/
in the URL line

Various differences are contained between one release and another. The
updates are for bug and security fixes. New releases normaly contain new
versions of software, or reconstruction of the distro and/or design. No, a
fully updated, say 8.0 is not the same as 8.1. Albeit close in most "user"

Gidday Folks

I'm just trying to add another linux box to our system. It's to be a samba server. It's
got 7.2 on it. Samba appears to be working ok. We have a gateway, firewall, proxy,
postfix
mail server using 7.2 as well. Somehow samba is being used for the mailboxes on this
machine.
Now the problem. I can ping both to and from the win98 PCs for the new server but I
can't
seem to access this PC in any other way. Something on the original box keeps giving me
"access denied" when I try to get the new box. I've been trying to access swat,
linuxconf,

Where
do I start to look? What other info do you need?

I'm with you Richard. BTW, I like using 'less' better

Back to the original topic tho. Yes, USR invented Winmodems©, but they
make many models that aren't, including internal pci hardware modems.
Probly their best known, least expensive is the model #2977 56k fax/
modem, ~$38 up. OTOH, they make a lot of modems that go into 'ready
made' computers, and they are almost always winmodems (if you've got a
Dell with a USR modem it's a safe bet it's a winmodem). Somebody else in
this thread said 'linmodems, not a winmodem'. Linmodems are winmodems,
but with a software kludge that gets 'em to work with Linux about as well
a fake modem ever can, and at the expense of the rest of your system.
What can ya expect from a $2 winmodem (no matter what you got hoodwinked
into payin for it)?

I might add that this procedure is an excellent way to rescue/reinstall a failed

the boot disk failed. The Mandrake 8.1 install is the easiest i've seen yet to do this

Re: [newbie] vmware in LM 8.1 continues

2001-12-09 Thread Marcia

Dear Frans,

Thank you for this help. I found out that I needed to install my kernel
sources which I did. After that the install attempt found my C ++ header
files however there were alot of error messages and it did not work. I was
given a web page for downloading the pre-built modules. I did and read the
instructions however I do not know which modules to install from this rpm.
Suse, Redhat , and Turbo are in the package but no LM 8.1. Does anyone know
which package I can use or if there is a workaround for this? Thanks for any
help.

Sincerely,

Marcia

[newbie] ltmodem initialization

2001-12-09 Thread Bill Winegarden

Hi,
I'm getting my system back into shape after the kernel mishap. The most
important aspect will be the modem.
On my original system (LM 8.1) and a Dell Inspiron 8000, I used the LTModem
drivers to get it up and running.
I thought I did the same thing this time but when I dial using kppp the
modem says it is initializing but it doesn't proceed past that.
Anyone with this setup? Or just any ideas.

Thanks and regards,
Bill W.

I have not looked at the halt command Ed but I would suggest 'man
shutdown' as the command to use when you are root. As there is a fair
amount there rather do a 'man shutdown | more' command. I am now using
GUI shutdown but if I can remember there was a command like shutdown -o
now which had to be issued. The man command will tell you what the
correct syntax is though. Do not this example as I am unsure of the
syntax.

My 2c's thrown in, sorry.

This is a very common question, easily found in the archives.

The linux burning program, cdrecord, relies on a SCSI cd burner. SCSI
emulation is provided for IDE burners so that they can work with cdrecord.

2001-12-09 Thread Terry Smith

Bob,

I'm a newbie so I'll leave the experts to tell you how to 'fix' your
problem. I do know, however, that creating two CD drives, one a SCSI
drive, is standard LM treatment. As I understand it, LM needs to define
a second drive (SCSI) to provide for write access.

I've had problems with automatic ejecting... a manual 'eject cdrom' or
'umount dev/hdc' should work.

I installed Mandrake 8.1 on my Dell Dimension (PIII) and everything went
very
welluntil I tried to access my cdrom drive.

This machine has a CD RW drive supplied by Dell, and a DVD rom installed

later by myself.

In checking with HardDrak, I find three cdroms listed:
ATAPI 12X DVDROMdev/hdd ATAPI/IDE
LG CD-RW CED-8080B dev/hdc ATAPI/IDE
LG CD-RW CED-8080B dev/scd0 SCSI

This machine doesn't have SCSI support, to the best of my knowledge.
Why is
Mandrake seeing two RW drives and why is it seeing a SCSI device?

I can't rouse the CD RW drive at all it won't light up and I can't eject
the
tray.

Any ideas?

[newbie] Epson Printer - C80

2001-12-09 Thread Ralph Slooten

Hi there again all,

I recently asked for some info on buying an Epson printer. Thanks Carlos
for you input I finally got to read it when I got home with my new
printer :-)

I found the site linuxprinting.org, and there it has a list of advised
printers. 1 of these is the Epson C80. This is the one I bought. The only
problem is I cannot get it to work properly with LM 8.1 :-( In fact, I
cannot get it to work at all. The pinter works (tried in that other OS
nobody likes to brag about).

I have tried USB, and also the Parallel port, but CUPS / lpd can't seem to
make heads or tails of it. The furthest I have got is for it to print out
*greek* text (no offence to the Greeks :-)).

Has anyone here the same printer? If so, have you gotten it to work, and
how did you get it to work? Using what connection (usb or parallel)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ralph

Hi All

I have apache setup and running fine using the default /var/www/html

However, I want to change the folder to /home/neil/webpages/html. The
folder exists and has the relevant index.html file in it etc. So, I've
used netconf to set apache to look in that folder and all I get is:-

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access / on this server.

Apache-AdvancedExtranetServer/1.3.20 Server at nrpmedia.com Port 80

When I try to access the page.

What is the problem? I have set the permissions to be everything! (i.e.
read write and execute for all - what are the special things? I have
left those unchecked anyways?), and the owner is 'neil' and goupr
'neil'. I wonder if I need to put apache in group neil? However, I
also tried putting apache as the owner and that didn't work either...
hmmm

Please help

You dont install the rpm then rebuild, just rebuild. So the package.src.rpm
should be in your current directory, then type "rpm --rebuild package.src.rpm"

Alot of text will then scroll by, in that text it will tell you where it
saved the newly made rpm. It's something like usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i686. Change
to that directory, then install the rpm just like any other rpm.

[newbie] Building Source RPMs?

OK, I am feeling a bit stupid right now! How do I build a source RPM? I
have been trying 'rpm --rebuild package.src.rpm', but I keep getting the
message 'package.src.rpm: no such file or directory'.

The package *does* exist. I "installed" it, and the tarball went into
/usr/src/RPM/SOURCES, and the spec file went into /usr/src/RPM/SPECS,
like I would have expected. The source RPM itself is in /usr/src/RPM,
where I copied it before installing it. I am su'd to root. Is this a
PATH issue?

Tom, that was it, and you are right, they seem to have done away with it in
8.1. Bummer, as often as I try new and different ways of blowing my system

There in lays the problem. When you exit from a kterm, you have to be root,
so if you are exiting as user and the command prompt comes up type "root" and
then root password, then at the prompt type "halt" . You should get a normal

As I said, 'In My Opinion'. Either is fine, I believe more people
prefer lame to bladeenc tho. I do. The notlame rpm I pointed to installs
'lame', is made by one of the Mandrake developers, and is the latest
version (LAME version 3.90 MMX).
>
> as for ripping I've been using a little PERL file called RIP that works

I made a confusing mistake in what I wrote. I use the Xmms diskwriter
plugin to convert mp3's to wav's. I use Grip to convert audio CD's to
wav's, or directly to mp3's. Grip also does CDDB lookups and adds the
names. Xmms has a normalize plugin, but I prefer to 'normalize -m *.wav'
from the command line, doin many all at once to average the sound volume
over lot'sa files.

Either way I think 'normalize' is a neccessary step to produce best
quality mp3's, or wav's to burn to a CD as .cda's. Specially if you d/l
mp3's from various sources, or rip from multiple CD's. AFAIK, there
aren't any apps that can normalize mp3's directly.

Hi, no I mean the folder in my computer that those updates download to and

[newbie] CRM

2001-12-09 Thread D. Lee Wiggers

Well I'm convinced. I have managed to lock up, crash, and ruin the
system to the point where my ML cd's were in danger of wearing holes
in them from reinstalling, BUT never lost my newly stored data.

TuxBox is now and forevermore my serious machine, with the Windows box relegated to
"toy"
status.

I have survived enough learning to install my new Qcad, MyBooks, Opera, and Komba2.

All I need now to be self-sufficient is a good CRM program. I have used Goldmine and
ACT on Windows.

Any suggestions? I've muddled thru Google and found a few "maybe's".

TIA and thanks for tons of help, list.

Hi Ed,

First a correction, the unmounting error occurs on dev/hda1 and dev/hda5
(not hda6).

Second, to answer you questions:

> how are you shutting down the box?
1. from the prompt (not in any windowing system) I type "exit". this takes
me to a promp asking me for a login.
2. i turn the computer off

>what command? what is the last bit of info> on the screen as it shuts down?
I don't use any command to turn the computer off - so I don't get any info
on shutdown.

[newbie] What driver to get

2001-12-09 Thread Admin

Hello:

I have been trying to install pilot-link into my lm8.0 system. After
installing the appropriate files from the distro cd's, I keep getting an
error saying it could not find the device. I have a PalmIII, whose cradle
is connected to my pc via a serial to usb interface. I read what little
documentation came with Pilot-link, and again, each time I execute the
command "pilot-xfer -l" I get a "device not found" error. I set up a link
between usb0 and /dev/pilot with no luck.

I was told the necessary drivers might not be installed. If so, how would
I go about finding out if they are installed. If they are installed, what
then am I doing wrong? In the event they are not installed, can somebody
point me in the direction on how to install the drivers? Specifically,
some sort of document with instructions and also, how would I go about
finding out the names of the drivers needed? Thanks in advance.

Dexter

I'm using KDE ... (the version that came with mandrake 8.0). sometimes my
windows do not display correctly, meaning, that rectangular blue spots would
appear on the top and bottom of the window.

I thought it was similar to M$ where I had to get the proper driver for the
monitor. From the letter that I got from John Rye it seems that what I need
to do is to get the monitor specification, is that right?

The hostname for a computer is a single word, like 'mycomputer' or
'frankenlinux'. The fully qualified domain name for a computer is a
combination of the hostname and domain name (separated by a dot), like
'mycomputer.somedomain.org'.

If you do not have a domain within your network (you're not running DNS
for that network), then you can make up a domain like 'domain.com'. You
must also have a hostname, and that hostname should be unique on the
network. Thus, you can't (or shouldn't) have two computers called
'twins'. You could call them 'twin1' and 'twin2'. You get the idea.

If I remember correctly, the wizard wants the fully qualified domain
name. I could be wrong, but you should be able to figure out which one
the wizard wants, and give it the "correct" answer.

RE: [newbie] SAMBA (was: internet sharing setup)

2001-12-09 Thread Jose M. Sanchez

If you are having problems connecting to shares from Win2K it may be due
to how Win2K handles passwords...

Make sure you have encrypted passwords turned on in samba.

Also make sure that the "hash level" parameter is set to 8 in Samba.

This causes Samba to accept various combinations of upper case and lower
case in the password. Effectively if Samba doesn't recognize the
password coming from Win2, samba will try sucessive combinations of
upper case and lower case letters using the password that was passed to
it, in attempting to find a match.

Re: Copying files

Remember that the Windows browser is showing you the shares.

Under Winblows it's easier to "Map" a drive letter to a share. Then most
Windows programs will use the Samba share without a UNC. You can copy
files via the windows browser, etc.

Yes, it is a member of the workgroup. But, I get an error message, when
double-clicking on the "Computers near me" icon, that states that I'm
not permitted to connect to the workgroup from this location (something
like that).

But, I am able to connect both ways between the Linux & Win95 boxes
after straightening out the user/password lists. I can connect to the
Win2K machine from the Linux box. I have to figure out how to transfer
files now. ls & q works but cp doesn't. And I can't seem to connect to
the homes directory from the Win95 box even though the homes share icon
shows up. But, as I mentioned above I can't connect to the Linux box or
Win95 box from my Win2K box.

Anyway, thanks for your help & the tutorial. It helps me to understand
what's going on. There sure is a lot to understand about networking!

Well, as much disdain as I have for M$ products, I still advocate
keepin Winblows around. It's good for playin games, 'bout all it's good
for ;) Besides, if you've already got it, you already got stuck for it.
Billy doesn't give any refunds, and thinks you're a crook if you try'n
sell it or give it away.

I boot W98 directly to DOS (pure DOS, no windoze overhead present).
That's good for flashing a motherboard bios. Better than doin it from a
DOS floppy. Also, many bios upgrades for peripheals are windoze only
apps. That's reason enough for me to keep a minimum winblows install
around, that and flyin airplanes ;)

Re: [newbie] conflict between USR modem and Com 2?

2001-12-09 Thread Ed Tharp

cat is short for "catolog" like the "type" command in dos, it just shows it
to the screen (as default) unless you direct it to a printer que.
in order to copy the info to a file, (without the quotes, in the text
console, as root, in a users (named et for me) home directory) I do a "touch
proc-pci"
this creates a file named proc-pci. then I do "chmod 775" this lets everyone
and everything see and write to this file (see "man chmod" for more info
about that) then I do "cat /proc/pci|/home/et/proc-pci" (after the /proc/pci
is a pipe (above the \ on the key board) this file you can copy (as root if
root was who created the mount points (most common as is done during
install)) to your windows drive with cp /home/et/proc-pci
/mnt/win_c/"whatever folder in windows you want"
of course you must change the folder and drive names to match whatever you
have.

We CAN be sure that some 3 com modem are win-modems, since the name Winmodem
is a registered trademark of the 3com corp.

[newbie] Problems with ISDN-configuration

2001-12-09 Thread zeroless

Hallo,

I have just installed Mandrake 8.1. All my hardware is working OK
except my ISDN-connection. I have a Teles 16.3c ISA PnP card
which is in the list of known and configurable ISDN-cards.
Mandrake says that it recognizes the IRQ and IO numbers by
itself. But when I configure my connection (and I tried to do that
many times, with several providers and in several ways) my
connection will not work anyway.

What can I do about it? I have already thought about buying a
different ISDN-card or using a different Linux-version. I have been
told that SUSE Linux is the best on ISDN. Any suggestions or
solutions are welcome.
