[newbie] 7.2 ISO's

2001-12-24 Thread Nelson Bartley

Hi Guys,

I'm looking for an old copy of the 7.2 ISO's. I've tried repeatedly to
install 8.0 and 8.1 on my antique beast(133/64MB), however it will only
install w/ the 2.2 kernel (it WILL NOT boot the 2.4 worth crap). Now I
can get it to install and boot 2.2 but as most of the packages have been
optimized for 2.4, as has the install, it does not work that well.

If anyone knows where I can grab a copy of 7.2 I would greatly
appreciate it.

The box said "Requires Windows XP or better." I can't understand why it won't

Doug,

The new Star Office 6.0 beta is worth looking at. It's a full office
suite, MS Office compatible and not as overstuffed at Star Office 5.2
(which is probably on your distribtion). You can grab it from the Sun
site.

RE: [newbie] Apache, PHP and MySQL problem

2001-12-24 Thread Dennis Herndon

You will need to do a grant all to the new user that you want to create.
Also look at the 'mysql' database and tables. "USE mysql", "show tables;"
then "select * from user;" and you can see what the protection settings are
at.

You might need to delete the first record in the USER table.

I'm using mysql with PHP and Apache and went through this same horror.

Hi All

I've got LM8.1 up and running and I have np using apache as a test
server on there along with php. However, MySQL is loaded (I chose it to
be) but it doesn't work in the way I want it to. First off, I can
create a database but only as root. Since I want to interogate/update
etc using php on webpages served by apache then I need it to not require
root.

I've been to the MySQL site but can't seem to find out how to do it...
Eek. Also, I've moved the default location for html files to my home
directory so I can work on them on the fly on my workstation machine;
don't know if this is an issue with this? Is there a MySQL conf file
somewhere that I'm missing? I've trawled through the apache ones and
they seem fine.

Thanks for any help... I just hope there are some people out there
who've had this requirement and got it going... Experienced help is what
I need I think :(

Not really. But then again Mac OS 9 does the same thing. You can click on
any partition on the Desktop and then choose "Initialize" from the
Special Menu and without a single word or warning the partition is
initialized!

2001-12-24 Thread Doug Lerner

Thanks, Steven. Well, everybody seems quite psyched abotu OpenOffice and
StarOffice. I will give those a try. Nobody seems to mention Hancom
Office. Has anybody tried them? Of course free is nice, but I am not a
fanatic about not purchasing software - particularly if it is nice. I
think the success of Linux will depend on people being able to support
themselves by developing it, and developing applications for it.

Of course I am speaking as somebody who works for a company that makes
software that runs on Linux, Mac and Windows. :-)

Thanks, Lanman. I will try that out.

And thanks for the hint about the Java Runtime Environment. I tried to

Re: [newbie] Off topic? How things are going with Linux...

2001-12-24 Thread Doug Lerner

Some people say a lot of Linux people are leaving Linux for OS X. Have
you heard anything about that? I use OS X in my daily work, and it is
nice, but I am also interested in Linux for (1) less dependency on one
company (Apple) and (2) cost (you can have lots of machines relatively
inexpensively) and also Linux seems faster than either Windows or OS X.

Of course the "polished application" base of both Mac and Windows is
still better.

urpmi is not a graphical based client. This means that any error messages
will get dumped to the screen, which means that you'll see them. I can't
imagine why it wouldn't be able to find the dependency rpms for you, since
it has access to the ftp copies of the install (ie, all 2 - 3,000 rpms),
unless perhaps it is a not a standard Mandrake rpm.

It's lightning fast!

Try this:
In your bastille-firewall.cfg file add ssh to your INTERNAL_INTERFACES= part.
Just keep re-reading the notes until you think you got it. In order to enable
ssh and port 22 to be seen on the internet I added "22+ ssh+" to the trusted
intefaces. There is a whole Q&A section at the bottom as well.

TRUSTED_IFACES="lo"
PUBLIC_IFACES="eth+ ppp+ slip+"
INTERNAL_IFACES="eth0+ ssh+"

Try lookinging in /var/log/urpmi.log and the archives of urpmi.log

I wonder what could have caused the problem?
Let us know when you find out.

I'm using Kmail 1.2 on KDE 2.1.1 [LM 8.0 (2.4.3)].

Where's this feature Ed, I can't find a user/pass

I get mail from pop.mail.yahoo...but I can only send

I don't think 1.2 has it yet(??) , and the integration

I don't want to upgrade coz everything's already

Any other recommendations?
Can't I do SMTP auth using Postfix?

Re: [newbie] A bit dangerous?

2001-12-24 Thread Grant Fraser

There are two things I have noticed about Linux.

1) An inherent cheekiness in the documentation.
2) The assumption that you know what you are doing.

It has been said that with windows, it something doesnt work you can just
keep poking buttons until you figure it out. With Linux that approach will
result in a meltdown. Reading the manual is dull, unrecoverable errors are
much more exciting.

[newbie] Crash after applying updates

2001-12-24 Thread Russ Kepler

A couple of days ago I updated my Mandrake 8.1 from the mirrors at
ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/Linux/distributions/mandrake/updates/8.1/RPMS using
the Mandrake Update selection in the software manager. Nothing in the kernel
was changed as I was putting that off until later, but all the other updates
were accepted.

Since then, and possibly connected with that action, my system has become
unstable, crashing 3 times since the update (as compared 0 times with 1.5
months runtime before). No hardware changes were applied aside from screwing
in the video connector. The crash is hard, nothing to do but reboot. I've
put a sync() in the background to sync the disks on a 5 second interval to
minimize damage and to try and get *something* in the syslog, but nothing
comes up.

If I could find the logs from the update I'll try and reverse the upgrades
applied - anyone know where they're kept? Short of that, anyone have any
ideas? It's a pretty standard MSI K7T mob with an Athlon 1.4 processor and
an old Diamond Viper video - it's possible something's happened here but
fairly unlikely to be intermittent. I'd like to get the system stable before
I leave on business, I'd hate to ask my wife to reboot the system daily while
I'm gone...

Well, how do you really feel Mark? ;>

My solution is to get Mandrake rpms. There's a how-to for the
tarballs, but it's been too long and I don't remember where or what
install'in .tgz themes involves. I seem to remember they're all
sort'a different. Anyhow, best places for themes are

Penguin Liberation Front
   http://lis.snv.jussieu.fr/~rousse/linux/plf/
Texstar
   http://www.pclinuxonline.com

Painless, just install the rpm's and they show up under the
Control Center | Look'n Feel options. Like most, I really like
Liquid, but I use it with System++ decorations and different colors.

Ok, I used Applications | File Tools | Find Files ... set it to
search /opt/kde3/ and told it to look for *.png. Came back with a
sh!+load, mostly in /opt/kde3/share/. Might want'a
start poke'n around there. Gqview would be a good tool.

   I wasn't too impressed with KDE3, and didn't think beta1 is
worth the too many minor bug hassles to use on a daily basis. I
didn't like the new eye candy all that much either. Back to 2.2.2 for
me. I guess I'm just an old fuddy duddy ;>

BTW, I found if you spend too much time in kde3, you're probly
gonna need to --force --nodeps back in kde 2.2.x rpms, reset some
things in kde2 apps (like kmail) as kde 3 is gonna corrupt some kde2
stuff and configs, even tho you (like I did), put it in /opt.

For several of the themes I download them to my /home/dennis/themes directory
and then in the directory add to the end of the file name, without untaring
or anything, I add ".ktheme" and the theme manager seems to accept that.
Don't know how well it works for some of the new themes but for the KDE 2.1
themes it worked for me.

I think you actually still can at that point - just so long as you haven't
actually hit "Done." And when you do this, you get a pop-up saying that
it's going to write new partitioning scheme to disk. So, there you go.

>configuration>other>Mandrake Control Center. Give your root password, Then
click on the + sign on "Boot" then boot config. Check the screen over to
familiarize yourself with what is there, and then click on the box in the
upper right that says configure. It will pop up a screen with the boot loader
choice you saw at install, click "ok", then in the next screen click on "add"
and you will have a choice of linux or windows, choosing windows takes you
into the setup screen for your windows stuff and from there it should be self
explanatory. HTH

Actually the "market share" is increasing and I expect it to hit a critical
mass and really take off, but for now it seems to be encroaching more on the
unix shares than the Microsoft or Apple shares. Time will tell, especially
with the M$ fee structure and the way the software is making a lot of folks
unhappy. Just my $.02,

Well, as long as the KDE libraries are present, any KDE app will run on
top of Gnome, and vice versa, so don't think of it as an either-or
situation. There is the occasional issue, like cutting and pasting across
the K-G divide, but there are also workarounds for those issues - just ask.

Also, there are many apps out there that are not advertised as either KDE
or Gnome, but simply as QT- or GTK-based.

Re: [newbie] Could Mandrake Kill My Motherboard?

2001-12-24 Thread Kelly McCormick

I too have had no problems with the Maxtor drive that I am aware of.
After thinking about this a bit longer though it occurred to me that I
installed this drive right before I installed Mandrake the first time. This
is also the drive that I installed Mandrake on. Windows is installed on the
first drive. The first time the MB had problems it lasted a bit longer, and
never died completely. I was dual booting and only using the Linux/Maxtor
drive periodically. The second MB barely lasted 3 months then died. This
time the Linux/Maxtor drive was being used exclusively. Another coincidence?
I don't know, but atleast it gives me something to try.
At any rate, thanks everyone for your help. I didn't intend to turn this
list into hardware support, so I will let this thread die here.

Doug, congrats on the successful install. I've used MacOS for years and
also use MacOS X. However I've been drifting away from Apple the last
few years as I don't particularly like their way of doing things. As
far as I'm concerned they're not much different than M$ and would love
to be in M$ position marketwise. Properietary OS'es suck wind!

Anyway, in terms of office suites for Linux there are several. Abisuite,
KOffice, OpenOffice and StarOffice. The latter two are from Sun and
IMHO both put M$ Office in it's place and...the price is damn good -
free.

I installed the latest OpenOffice binary this past weekend. I'm
impressed - I've been using StarOffice v 5.x previously.

In case you haven't heard of it, let me introduce you to
Linux's version of VersionTracker. To find the apps
I mentioned, go there and use the search facility.

Doug ; Try Star Office 6.0 Beta (it's a Beta but very stable!) at
www.sun.com

or better yet, try Openoffice at
www.openoffice.org

get the 641b version for Linux and/or Windows. Includes full compatibility
for MS Office XP ! and it's totally FREE ! In Either case, make sure that you
get a Java Runtime Environment package running before you install the office
suite. You'll want j2re - 1.3.1 for either Windows or Linux. Get that at

www.java.sun.com

We've been using it at the office for months without a problem on 37 PC's.

Steve,

when you shut the machine down it's normal for the machine to "shut down" eth0 and
eth1 or however ethernet interfaces it has. this is normal behavior. If you watch when
it starts back up you'll notice messages to the affect that it's starting interface
eth0 and so on.

the short answer to this is use the connection sharing setup wizard to help configure
your nics and get everything setup. the longer explanation is below. when you start
the setup wizard give the first nic 192.168.0.1 and the second 192.168.1.1.

normally the IP you want to use for the first nic (eth0) would be 192.168.0.1 and you
can use the 192.168.1.1 for the second nic (eth1).

your range for the first nic might be something like 192.168.0.3 - 192.168.0.10.
(192.168.0.2 being reserved for your nameserver) And while I'm thinking about it make
sure you've turned off ypbind and yppasswd. You don't need them and if they're on will
give you no end of grief. They're setup to start automagically by default.

your subnet for the second card as I stated previously would be 192.168.1.1 and your
range could be 192.168.1.10 - 192.168.1.255 with your subnet mask 255.225.255.0 or 24.
using the latter would look something like this:

192.168.0.1/24 = 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0

Any machines out on your LAN would be of the second subnet. i.e. 192.168.1.x/24

/etc/resolve.conf might look something like this:

== begin /etc/resolv.conf example =
# search yourhost.org your-isp.net
# search yourhost.org
search your-isp.net

nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx # primary isp dns server
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx # secondary isp dns server
nameserver 192.168.0.2 # your local dns server
   # local nameserver is necessary for your LAN
   # to enable good local communications

# ppp temp entry
# your dialer normally places entries here, however, I've found the best
# performance to happen after all connections are up and running including
# the LAN to make this file chmod 444 so that it's no longer a writable # file and
therefore undergoes no more changes.
== end /etc/resolv.conf example

Re: [newbie] Unable to install: "Kernel Panic"

2001-12-24 Thread Doug Lerner

Wow! It worked!

After getting this piece of critical advice from you Civileme, the
installer worked just fine! It is true that in under 30 minutes you can
install a working system.

Really great points:

* Mandrake Linux found with no fuss at all my sort of non-standard USB
ethernet connection. Internet connectivity, which is usually a hassle,
was no trouble at all.

* Even my Japanese keyboard's mapping (usually another hassle) was fine
right from the start.

* Same with the network time synchronization.

So I have to say after using it for 10 minutes I am pleased.

The KDE initialization dialog has a problem though. Apparently Mandrake
Linux would like to collect info from people, but the keyboard does not
seem to work in any of those initialization forms. I just had to cancel
out of them. After that the keyboard worked.

I don't know why it doesn't work on the older Mint machine (other email I
posted).

Thanks again everybody for all your suggestions and help!

[newbie] A bit dangerous?

2001-12-24 Thread Doug Lerner

I am installing Mandrake 8.1 now on my HP Pavilion. I still don't know if
it will be successful or not, but the installer seems to be happily
installing all the packages.

I started with two partitions on my hard drive: one for Windows 98 and
one for Windows 2000. I decided I could get along with just the Windows
2000 partition and so at the partitioning stage I clicked on the Windows
98 partition, selected delete and then auto-allocate.

Auto-allocate used the deleted Windows 98 partition and created linux,
home and swap partitions instead. Then it went on to select and install
packages, which it is doing now.

All this without any warnings at all!

You would think that before an entire partition was deleted you would get
warnings like "This will delete all the data on this entire partition.
Are you sure you want to do this?" But there was none of that. I was
surprised.

I would recommend inserting such a warning step into the procedure.

When you set linux in this, hda4 follows some of the linux partitions in
the "chain of recognition" that windows follows. Since detection stops
at the first non-recognizable partition, any later "windows" partitions
are marked as hidden. This is, as you gathered, a windows problem. It
would be better to put all winpartitions in front of the linux
partitions and to use the last primary you make as the container for all
your extended partitions rather than putting them in the middle.

There is a way to achieve this, but it is non-trivial. Best to borrow
an IDE drive, partition it with three winpartitions as 1, 2, and 3 then
all linux partitions after it and then copy the current disk partition
by partition using the filesystem and the 'cp -a' command, not dd from
mount point to same named mount point on the second drive. Then erase
the first drive and create it again as a clone of the second, then
correct /etc/fstab and /etc/lilo.conf to the new setup and finally
ececute /sbin/lilo as root.

2001-12-24 Thread Ed Tharp

do you run some sort of "disk compression" ? I remember that drivespace or
something like that, as well as "stacker" created a hidden drive for the
compression info,

as to why window$ can not (should not?) see the contents of the drive and
linux can? Linux works right, M$ winders works the way M$ wants. just my
opinion.

and no, I can not see why _you_ dual boot, ( I do know why _I_ dual boot,
and I probly even got you beat for "perverse" hard drive and cdrom arangement
and excuses... but let's not go there) since the url would only come up if I
was a registered user of mandrake-expert, I believe.

OK

I have seen something like this before with the eboxit. ZTry this:

F1 at splash screen

linux mem=53M

at the input prompt, or if you have 128M of memory then

linux mem=117M

It appears that this has shared video memory and ther BIOS may be handing the linux
kernel a bad memory map so that the screen writing is overwriting the kernel stack.

2001-12-24 Thread Doug Lerner

I like to eliminate the simplest possibilities first. :-)

Since the Perl error message said "missing file" it seemed reasonable to
ask if, perhaps, there simply was a missing file.

Trying another CD drive is not really possible. My computer needs to boot
from the internal one. It won't boot from an external USB drive. Also,
that drive successfully installed Redhat Linux this morning on the same
computer, so I really do think it is reasonable not to suspect the drive
first, don't you?

How do I check the md5sums?

Re: [Re: [newbie] cant connect to apache, ssh, ftp or telnet from network]

2001-12-24 Thread Ian K.Harrell

Some further information on this problem.

There are no entries in either the /etc/hosts.deny or hosts.allow files.
So this isnt causing the problem.

I can perform an iptables -F and then set all the default policies back
to accept and everything works fine. Of course this leaves me with no
firewall too. So it looks like it is some firewalling rule that is
causing the problem.

I attached a copy of my bastille-firewall.cfg file to see if anyone sees
a problem with it. I don't see anything in there that could be causing
this.

With the on board vid the BIOS is most likely reporting the wrom
RAM value.

Try this.
At the Installation splash screen press F1 and at the boot prompt enter:
 linux mem=(total ram - video ram)M

If you have 128MB and your videao card uses 4MB then you would enter:
 linux mem=124M

No, unless you have a bad download or burn. Try redownloading from different

[newbie] Where's my E: drive (after reinstalling Mandrake).

2001-12-24 Thread Anguo

I have three partitions under win98: hda1 (c:) hda9 (d:) and hda4 (e:)
(if you want to know why I still have windows, you may read this:
http://www.mandrakeexpert.com/index1.php?tab=paid&act=view&incident=7114&w=0
&PHPSESSID=db1ebacda45a13eb67211228ecf142f8 )

I had to reinstall Mandrake 8.1 and since then, windows won't read hda4 (e:)
I run linux/fdisk and found out that the type for hda4 was set to "hidden
FAT32".
Still with fdisk, I t to change the type from 1b to b (FAT32), w to write
the table and exited.
If I reboot to linux, the changes are still there.
But when I boot win98, the partition e: is still not available...
When I go back to linux after having booted win98, I notice that the
partition table has changed back: the type for hda4 has come back from b to
1b. I have no such problems for my c: and d: drive, hda1 and hda9.
Since I reinstalled mandrake, windows seems to be willing to hide hda4 from
me. It's funny because the content is visible from linux. What's the point
in having a windows partition visible only from linux and not from windows
itself.

Does anyone have a clue?

thanks,

Anguo

This suggests a hardware problem. If it is happening on one system and
not another, then check the CD drives. If it happens on many systems,
it is likely the burner. Other culprits are memory (make a floppy from
/images/memtest-x86.bin just the way you would make a boot floppy then
boot from it for a really thorough memory chack) and sometimes the
receiving hard disk (most notably WD drives run at more than 33MHz).
Windows will not show these problems, particularly the memory problem
since it occupies the lower and only a little of the upper section of
memory and rarely when a "leak" occurs, the rest of the memory and linux
occupies all the memory it can, because the designers are of the belief
that ubused memory is wasted.

here's something that will knot your shorts. some clients have a unique way of
announcing themselves in such a way that PortSentry sees the commnuication as a port
scan and makes an entry in the /etc/hosts.deny file AND then also creates a rule in
the iptables ruleset to block any further attempts at connections from the IP address.
Netscape 6.x is one of these culprits. Specifically, Netscape Messenger 6.x. I
stumbled upon this miserey some time back and have since been able to reproduce this
behavior repeatedly. Drove me crazy for a while till I realized what was going on.

a preemptive strike...
When you run ./configure, the program is looking for dependencies before it compiles.
When you are missing something it will tell you..."cant find gtk-config" or whatever.
now go to rpmfind and search for that file, dl the package and install and try again.
"make" should run fine if ./configure finishes witout error, su to root run make
install..you did the others as a user didnt you?

Mandrake Control Centre>Boot>BootConfig

Check the box to Launch X window on start
Check No autologin

It will then boot into the graphical logon

BTW:Logging in as root is discouraged. That is why the background is that
sickly red colour, and there are no icons in the tool bar, and it is also why
a little window pops up saying "This is not a good idea" :-)

If anything needs root priviliges. You may execute it as a root window
inside your normal user account.

u have to edit /etc/crontab in order to get this working - edit the file
with an editor of your choice
and insert the cron jobs above (dont forget to set the user the cron jobs
should be running as).
then save and "killall -HUP crond" - this will restart the cron service and
your jobs should run properly.

You keep talking about a twice compressed file. It isn't twice compressed
tar is just a way to archive files without any compression. After you make a
tarball then you can decompress it.
to extract the files you first have to uncompress it and then untar it.

I hpe this helps.

Re: [newbie] Can someone explain to me how to.................

2001-12-24 Thread Pauljames Dimitriu

You are correct about the twice-compressed file.

You need to do the following (from a terminal):

1) gunzip *.*.gz
2) tar -xvf *.tar

Good luck,

Paul

[newbie] Login Menu

2001-12-24 Thread Pauljames Dimitriu

Hello,

When I (re)installed Linux, I selected the option
of automatically logging into one account. This is
fine, but when I log out and I want to log in as root,
I don't get the graphical menu, all I get is the
command line.

Two questions: 1) From the command line, how do
I start up the login GUI?

 2) How can I make it so Linux always boots into
this menu?

 Thanks,

 Paul

Re: [newbie] file system accessible by windows and linux

Probably the easiest would be FAT32. You'll find that when you've installed
Linux, it will mount it for you by default. You'll find it from Linux as
/mnt/windows, or /mnt/win_c - something like that.
