Just kinda wondering why no one has brought up "/etc/rc.d/init.d/network
restart" !?
That works too right?

Thanks Pat,

I appreciate the quick reply. I'm not too sure what you mean by "Mandrake

Yup, that worked. 'cdrecord -scanbus' still shows the CDRW as the write
device. Unfortunately, when I run xcdrecord, it wants to use that as the
input device as well. Ah well, I reckon I can figure that out, too

Greetings,

I just learned today to fix the: Change root to /initrd: error -2 you
simply have to make a directory /initrd
as root

mkdir /initrd

will solve that error message. For the reason do a search of the
mandrake news group. I asked the question a little earlier in the

Thanks to the person who responded to my inquiry in the mandrake news

If you are trying to mount the CD and then play it, you don't do that with an
audio CD. Just put the CD in and close the tray and then select the player of
your choice. If you use CD Player then the play list should load
automatically. If you use ALSA or XMMs you have to make selections to get it
to go. But the point is that audio cds don't need a mount command. HTH

In the past when java seemed to be problematic for konqueror and netscape, I
copied my j2re1.3 file to my /home/dennis/jre1.3.1 directory and then
pointed Konqueror at the file: /home/dennis/jre1.3.1/bin/java
This allows me to save it with the rest of my /home/dennis files if I do an
update or upgrade or reinstall. I don't have to go looking for it. Just a
hopefully helpful hint, somebody tell me if this is not a smart thing to do,
or if it is brilliant you can tell me that also. : )

[newbie] Kernel 2.4.8-31.2mdk (error messages on bootup)

2002-01-08 Thread Andre Dubuc

I just installed kernel 2.4.8-31.2 to upgrade from 2.4.3-20. Later. I tried
to install kernel 2.4.17.1-1 which did not install, because of failed
dependencies.

On reboot, I noticed a few error messages during boot-up. I wonder what they
mean, and whether they're serious:

Change_root: old root has d_count= 2
Trying to unmount old root . . . <3>error -16
Change root to /initrd: error -2

Everything seems to be working OK with the 2.4.8-31.2 kernel. I'm
wondering whether these error messages were generated by the .17 kernel?

Is there any possibility that the attempt to install the .17 kernel has left
a "residue" that is messing something up? Do I need to "uninstall" it, even
though it was never really "installed". If the .17 kernel attempt did
interfere with the .8 kernel, should I uninstall & re-install it? What would
the command be to uninstall?

I'm rather new at kernel installation. In hindsight, I probably
shouldn't have messed with the .17 kernel.

Tia for any assistance on this,
Regards,
Andre

Title: RE: [newbie] How to renew IP address?

Hi All,

    You can also try:

ifdown eth0     (stops the current network)
ifup eth0       (looks for new information for the new network)

This can be used for anything from ethernet (eth0, eth1,...), PPP sessions (ppp0, ppp1,...) so this command is quite flexible.  Good Luck

kpackage and then click on the Magnifying glass and in the search box type

It's for Windows, not Linux. It works for clueless Windows users who don't
know how to secure the hole -- or who are stuck with earlier versions of
Windows where the hole *can't* be plugged. Check Steven Gibson's site for the
details, I'm sure someone will post the URL if you ask.

As a couple of people pointed out, it appears that I have a marginal CD-ROM
drive. Actually the drive used as the CD-ROM drive is actually a DVD drive
(LITE-ON DVD-ROM LTD163) while I also have a CD-RW drive (LITE-ON

fstab to make the CD-RW drive the cdrom drive to be used, at /mnt/cdrom.
It reads all the CDs fine.

I have no idea what this will do to cdrecord et al, but I guess I'll find

I think any non-kde program that has sound needs to be run with artsdsp or

[newbie] Hmm....maybe call it installation source?

2002-01-08 Thread Robin

Hi, all

I have copied the files from all 3 CDs onto an ftp server so I can do
ftp installs, but when I select new software to install with software
manager, I still have to put in the CDs. Instead of shuffling CDs in and
out of CD-ROM, is there anyway to have package manager retrieve file
from the ftp server automatically?

Another question is that I would like to replace some of the rpm with
newer ones so that no upgrading is required after installation. If I
tried just simply replaced the rpm file, it will just tell me that it
cannot find the (original) rpm file.

I have a feeling the questions are related to hdlist.cz in base folder,
but have no clue on how or what to use to edit it.

Any help is appreciated.

[newbie] Mozilla and Flash

2002-01-08 Thread Neville Cobb

Has anyone experienced problems with mozilla stalling when you visit a
site using flash.
I've noticed via a number of other posts regarding problems with
realplayer hanging that the solution was to issue the command 'artsdsp
realplay'. I've since noticed that if you run mozilla using the same
command ie 'artsdsp mozilla' I don't experience the same hanging problem
with the flash plugin when I visits the sights, it loads and plays
immediately. I then reverted back running mozilla without the artsdsp
prefix and it hangs. So this may be a work-around, it worked for my
system anyway.

Problem: Flash plugin (presumably 5.0 r47 only) hangs mozilla, when it's
trying to play audio, while audio device is active. (Reproducible with
some [e.g. es1371] sound driver)

[newbie] 8.1 CD player problems

2002-01-08 Thread Mike Cochrane (MC)

I recently upgraded from 7.2 to 8.1 and am in the process of hunting down
the inevitable bugs that usually result from upgrades. I must say, however,
this version update was the smoothest I've ever experienced. Good job,
Mandrake!

I'm running KDE 2.2 as the environment on an Asus motherboard I built with
an Athlon 650 CPU, 128 meg., two HDrives, one floppy, and one CD.

Neither KDE's CD Player nor Grip will open and play a music CD. Both are
unable to open the cd device (as a user or as root). Data CDs read fine
from Konqueror. Could this be a problem with "supermount"? That feature
has not been present in my earlier installations of Mandrake (and Red Hat).

The following two lines appeared in my /etc/fstab after the 8.1
installation:
/mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/hdc,fs=iso9660 0 0
/mnt/floppy /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=vfat 0 0

The supermount feature has been a bit unpredictable in mounting and
unmounting the CD, but I'm learning the quirks and how to live with it.
Could the music CD inability have something to do with the device definition
of fs=iso9660 in the fstab file? Has anybody got this all figured out?

Thanks.

Mike

[newbie] 8.1 program install=kernel panic

I have a problem with 8.1 can anyone help please?

I have PII233 128Mb ram and ATI rage turbo agp graphics card,NE2000
compatible network card and generic scsi isa card for blackwidow
scanner.

I am flummoxed, every time I try to boot from cdrom to install 8.1
the install locks up (during expert) or reboots on other install
options.

The error at lockup is always

RAMDISK: Compressed image found at block0
Uncompressing <0> CPU 0 :Machine Check Exception:1604

Bank 0:b2800800

Bank 3:b2080a01

Kernel panic:CPU context corrupt

This happens with 8.0 and 7.2 and suse7.3.

It did not happen with redhat 6.1 or mandrake 6.0.

I have PII233 128Mb ram and ATI rage turbo agp graphics card,NE2000
compatible network card and generic scsi isa card for blackwidow
scanner.

I have changed the bios in loads of combinations but nothing works.

I would love to get 8.1 working so that once tested I can install it on
my main workday computer and perhaps laptop.

I have been using mandrake since 6.0 but have never come across this
problem.

Re: [newbie] deleted partition HELP!

2002-01-08 Thread Ric Parsons

Oobups, sorry forgot those parameters,
lemme try that again.

Ok the drive is a 20Gb drive, with basically
a blank partition table, but with the
actual partition boundaries still there.

/dev/hda5 (I don't know for sure) was
mounted on /home it was the thrid therd 3rd
partition inward, I don't remembner the
devices, but each directory was mounted
in this order.

/boot then / then /home each dir was mounted
to its own device on the drive, but I don't
remember what they were.

I know all of the filesystems were native
linux (ext2) and the last one was a linux swap.

I will display here what the fdisk said.

Disk /dev/hda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 2501 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

   Device BootStart EndBlocks Id
System
/dev/hda1 1281 1907 5036377+ 83
Linux

I do not that its right, because it was "blank"
before I tried to run Partition Magic Pro on it,
this was the best PMp could do I guess.

I would like to know if the ext2 explorer thing
would work since these are all ext2 partitions,
excapt the last one of course being a swap.

Robin,

I think what you may be looking for are the urpm* tools, you can use urpmi
(to install packages), urpme (to erase packages) and urpmf (to find
packages). They are command line utilities, written by MandrakeSoft. The
nice thing about urpmi is that it *will* install package dependencies from
CD's, and it will upgrade an existing package without any fancy
parameters.

I hope this helps.

Mitch,
I have not experienced the problem you're having. As a test I took a

that there is an entry in your configuration that prohibits scripts owned

RE: [newbie] Samba access

How about the other way around. Let's say you have a Windows 2000 domain
that you want to put the SAMBA into, how can you make that appear? What
other things must do to give access? I know this is a bit involved, but I
have been reading through O'Reilly's SAMBA book and it doesn't have the
answer for this version 3.0.

What I have done is to put the workgroup (olympus) in the SAMBA config page.
This is the name of my domain to which my computer is a member.

OK boot the install CD and hit F1 when the splash screen comes up

when it gets to the prompt

#

then type

# fdisk -l /dev/hda

this will give you a partition list

Write it down or save it to a floppy--to save it to a floppy...

# mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
# fdisl -l /dev/hda > /mnt/floppy/partinfo

and partinfo will be a text file on the floppy

Don't go any further yet. Just send me the partition info and we'll go
from there.

There is an ext2 explorer program that can .look at a disk and dump the
raw information from ext2 partitions, but right now I don't even know
what filesystem you are using. There is also a windows program called
explore2fs, and there is a program on the rescue CD that tries to guess
which partition might be /, but there is no program that does what you
describe... For one thing, it would have to have a lot of intelligence,
would require a fully operational system to run (which means mount your
drive as a slave on a computer running linux), and would have to be
written to handle at least a dozen filesystems, including the image file
used when someone installs linux for windows. That implies hugeness on
a program for a very limited use, not something that is likely to
interest a development engineer.

Re: [newbie] Is CGI set up ... FIXED -(permission related)

2002-01-08 Thread Mitch . Wilson

Thank you for the response, but this is really starting to get to me! What
do I not have the hang of? Everyone acts like it's soo simple. But
there's something else going on.

Can someone explain why a cgi file WITH PERMISSIONS SET TO 755 ... would
not run, but then would run IMMEDIATELY AFTER CHANGING OWNERSHIP FROM ROOT
TO A USER?

After the file would run, I changed ownership back to root and the file
***would no longer run***. Then, I changed it back to the user and the file
***would run***.

Does anyone have an explanation? If not, that's cool. But please don't say
"Set the permisisons" ... or "Read about permissions." Please :)

I'm getting to worked up. Lol. It's just that there's something here to
understand that is escaping everyone somehow, and I want to understand it.
If I'm totally missing something really simple, could someone explain it?

whew ...

thanks,
mitch

the *must* is not necessarily true. the permissions can be toggled
according to the wishes of the owner (and the almighty root). the owner can
set the permissions of any file he owns depending on the use. you can also
remove the write permission of a file so prevent from overwriting it (chmod
555 [file] <- the file is readable and executable but is write protected
to all users). files without write permission for the current user is
readable meaning it can be opened as 'read-only'. the user can also remove
group and world permissions so only he can use the file ( chmod 700 file ).

sound dizzying but the concept is really simple once you get the hang of
it.

Re: [newbie] Shell Script

2002-01-08 Thread Mitch . Wilson

Thanks but I keep getting the same answer. I did*** give
permission, as root, for anyone to run the script. I used chmod 755
scriptname, while logged in as root. Still, it wouldn't run from the web
page, but it would run from the command line. It just wouldn't run. Period.
Then, all I did -- one single thing -- was change ownership with chown to
the user who owned the home directory in which the script was located. So,
my question was, can root not give permission to run a script in a user's
home directory? I know the obivious answer is: sure! But, nevertheless, my
script would not run with permission from root. It just wouldn't, until I
changed ownership to the user. I can't explain it, which is why I'm asking.

Am i missing something here? If so, please tell me -- because there's
something going on that apparently no one knows the answer to. It seems
obivious and simple and basic, etc. But it's not.

Why do I keep getting answers like, "Change permission" ... "There's a
difference between permission and ownership" "Read about permissions,
it's all explained" ... I know I know !! :)

See past postings. I do know the difference between permissions and
ownership. Changing the permissions did nothing; changing the ownership did
-- which is _why_ I came here for some enlightenment. My question is: how
could changing the ownership of the file to a user would magically allow
the file to run, whereas having the file owned by root would not allow it
to run? The file is in the user's home directory.

Thanks for the help, but I give up :). No one seems to understand what I'm
asking. Oh well ... I know it doesn't make sense. That's why it's sooo
weird. How else can I explain it?

I guess it's just time to let this one die. After all, the script is
working now. Hooray!

No, you should not confuse permissions and ownership.
Ownership and permissions are independent. When
you run ls -al from the shell, you have the permission string
first and then the owner and the group.

As root, you can allow anybody to run anything. Suppose
your script is called rootownedscript, you can allow anybody to run
it by typing chmod o+x rootownedscript (o means other, x means
execute, therefore chmod o+x = make executable for other).
Well, if you read the manual (type man chmod from a terminal),
you will know everything about chmod.

But as a warning, be careful to what you allow to your users...
I wouldn't recommend to allow diskdrake or other funny tools to
be allowed to all users...

Then chmod o+x your_script.

I had a similar problem when I updated from 7.2 to 8.0. I found that
the gcc was actually a symlink pointing to a non-existant file, so I
found the correct version of gcc (using find) and pointed gcc to that
instead.

[newbie] Strange behaviour after MandrakeUpdate

2002-01-08 Thread Stefano POGLIANI

I am running 8.1
I have used MandrakeUpdate and selected the 3 categories (Bug fixes,
Normal, Security). I installed everything except the Kernels (3 packages).
After that, once rebooting, the following happens:

1. During boot the network is available (I can ping the Linux
machine from outside). As soon as the Login Screen becomes
available (or shortly after) the network is unreachable.
The Linux machine is not visible from outside and it
cannot reach other machines.
But it can ping itself (using 192.168.0.1 or the machine
name).

2. The Graphical Login wants to reconfigure my desktop as if
it was the first time. When I select the first step (the
KDE desktop but it is the same with Gnome), then the NVidia
screen appears and I am prompted again with the Login
Screen.

The only way I can access my system is via a non-graphical
console

Could someone tell me if I did something wrong when I used MandrakeUpdate
(I mean, should i only have used the "Security" category ???) or
if this problem was exprimented by other people?

How could I get a working system back (other than re-installing
MDK 8.1 again) ?

Thanks a lot. Best regards

/stefano

limewire.com has a linux clinent out, it's writen in java, so make sure you
have SUN's java installed (kaffe didn't cut it for this program) it uses the
gnutella network, but will connect much better. If you have trouble
connecting, change the amount of connected hosts from 2 to 99, this will
always give you a good connection :)

windows me, 2k, and xp should have internet sharing built in, if you go to
network neighborhood, you should be able to go to the create new network
wizard which should give you the option to share your internet, if you have
win98 or 95, you'll need a program such as wingate, or the free withgate

This isn't completely correct. Win 98SE does have ICS. I'm using it at this
moment on my server. Three other workstations are running LM8.1 and
accessing the net through the server as is the 98SE laptop. I'm hoping to
change to LM8.1 on the server shorlty. Especially if someone can tell me the
best way of doing this. Any takes?

This is not a cheeky answer.
The answer to your question is yes.
You can use both, but not at the same time.
One must be chosen as the default.
Your printer will not be confused by either, its the
applications from which you print that need the guiding hand.

Re: [newbie] deleted partition HELP!

2002-01-08 Thread bascule

from your post it seems you have managed to lose all partition info on a
complete drive? and you don't know the partition info (cylinder boundaries
etc)

look for 'mrecover' and also 'testdisk' on the net, if you haven't touched
the drive than you may be able to recover some partitions depending on what
filesystems you had on there,

Go to www.kazaa.com and download kazaa
client for Linux. Its about 256k. Only thing is, that you have to use it
from console by going to its directory and after you install it you have to
type ./kza and it will work. It's a little bit ancient looking but it really
does work well.-ChuckOn Mon, 2002-01-07 at 21:05, Michael

If I understood correctly you need to find a way so your Linux-box can read your lost partition. If you already have a windows partition */mnt/windows, /mnt/win_c or whatever, boot to windows and use Partition Magic 7.0 to scan your partition from windows and reformat it into ext2 which is the Linux standard filesystem. When you do so successfully boot in Linux and from Mandrake Control Center or from picoing /etc/fstab add a new mount point for instance /var. If this is not the problem, then (pay attention to this),  login as root look if you already have a /home file in the basic catalogue. If you do have, open the Kdiskfree and look at the mounted partitions. Dismount /home. Go to the Linux Control Center and mount your unseen so far partition as /var or as /home. If you mount it as /home you wont be able to see your data stored in the previous /home that you have dismounted from Kdiskfree even if you mount it again.

[newbie] sound problem with aztech pci 168 azf 3328

2002-01-08 Thread Jean Polse

Hi

I have recently installed linux using mandrake 8.1.
I have a aztech PCI 168 AZF3328 sound card and no sound comes out !
I have tried to configure it using hardrake but this card is not in the
list. Moreover the boxes to fill with IRQ, DMA etc are not visible. (Bug in
hardrake ??)
Moreover I have found puzzling information about this card:
I have seen on the mandrake site that this card "has been used and reported
as compatible by someone of the MandrakeSoft team ".
On the ALSA -site it is quoted that "Support for cards or chipsets is
undetermined as of yet."

Does anyone know how to install this card ?

Thanks for any help !
Regards.
Jean
