[newbie] backspace, where art thou?

2002-01-25 Thread Michel Clasquin

Hi gang

All of a sardine my backspace key behaves like a delete key - ie it
deletes to the right rather than to the left. Please tell me where to fix
this - It's driving me insane!

Did you try to change the font from within gvim? (just :set guifont=...)
If this works, it might be some problem about the order in which the

[newbie] kde startup sound

2002-01-25 Thread Jason Jesso

I can't get the kde startup sound to play when starting KDE with LM8.1.

In the kde control panel I have the startup sound checked off and I can
even play the test, no problem. When I log out I hear the logout sound.
?

Another strange thing is that in Kmix I don't see anything, just a grey
window. No volume settings, nothing.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

emacs has a file where a few items are stored called

/etc/X11/app-defaults/Emacs

The format of settings entered there is given by opening a terminal and
typing

man emacs

For your purposes, you want to check that the font line in the file is
something like
emacs*font:
-*-Fixed-Medium-R-*-*-*-130-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1
only on one line in the file...

Then you can grab the lower right corner of the window and use it to
resize the window, or you can specify the geometry...

Once, on a lark, I decided to make emacs my desktop environemnt/window
manageR, so I set the app-defaults to -geometry 145x86 to fill the screen...

If you want the power of emacs without quite the overhead, there is jed
available for install. joe is also a nice editor which can be made a
micro-emacs.

BUT as the guy in the asbestos suit intimated--there is something of a
religious war on between vi and emacs. vi has its roots in old old
UNIX, where it was rightfully welcomed as the best thing _including_
sliced bread by the folks who had been chafing under the inquisitorial
torture of a program called ed. Emacs came somewhat later, largely the
brainchild of Richard Stallman, and the folks who decided they liked it.

My email signature at one time was:

"Daddy, why do we have to hide from the police."

"Because we use emacs, son. They use vi."

My own learning came on micros(8&16-bit) and my intro to vi was on SCO
Xenix, which impressed me at the time. (and I thought 1 Meg of memory
was a _LOT_, too). MINCE (Mince Is Not Complete Emacs) was available on
CP/M and DOS computers, and I did a lot of writing, in an area where we
were lucky to have power. With powerdowns frequent, it was a pain to
switch modes in vi to save everything every few minutes... Lessee
to get out of insert mode then :w then i to get back to
insert mode... With MINCE it was ctrl-x s or more likely nothing at all
since it autosaved to a scratch buffer frequently.

And then there was SCRIBBLE to accompany MINCE, but nothing to accompany
vi on the machines I had available (SCRIBBLE was a TeX-like thing for
formatting output), so I learned emacs and didn't continue using vi
beyond its basic editor functions and then not those if something more
convenient was available.

Now I use emacs as my IDE. The color-coded support in my languages of
choice and the autosaving are very important to me. I use vi when I am
doing rescue work (if it is available and joe or jed are not), and I use
LyX for documents, or occasionally Applixware or StarOffice if I have
to be Microsoft-readable.

Yes, you will find every editor has a following. PHPers sometimes like
vim, but often select Xemacs. Many web page folks think Nedit birth was
the point where the world began to run right.

Pick the one you want and learn it. Then join the fanatics who think
their editor is the greatest.

I don't happen to have a fully formed opinion, and I tend to use the
simple commands on lots of editors, and rarely have use for anything
more. I do tend to customize emacs to suit myself more than any other,
and I think I also like it because the screen is easy on my eyes, but I
can't claim to know even half its functions.

Bascule is entirely correct. With Windows you don't need a cable between
your sound card and your CD Rom. With Linux, you do. There will be a
(probably) 4 pin connector on the soundcard (or the soundcard portion of your
motherboard if you have a built-in card). You must get a CD Rom cable that
matches your soundcard "audio out to CD" plug on one end, and that matches
your CD Rom "audio in from soundcard" on the other.

Well, in one sense, if you are downloading, it is very close. Just
throw away Netscape and pine you are there--everything else is GPL or
other GPL-compatible free licenses. Yes, even the Mandrake-specific
tools. And the integrated menus are an adaptation of Debian.

Hi, Jim. Are this 6 rpms installed?

a52dec-0.7.1b-2.i686.rpm
libdvdcss-0.0.3.ogle3-1.i686.rpm
libdvdread-0.9.2-1.i686.rpm

ogle-0.8.2-ogle1.i586.rpm
ogle_gui-0.8.2-ogle1.i386.rpm

What return the console when you type: ogle?

I think there are also a couple of other ebooks available in ps and

[newbie] Baad gvim!

2002-01-25 Thread Chris Keelan

Anyone know how to get gvim to behave? I'm running Mandrake 8.1 on my desktop and I
cannot get it to recognize any font changes. With a 17" montior, the default font is
just too small but editing the .gvimrc file doesn't seem to work.

I'd be happy with 9x15 or 10x20 system fonts, but gvim just seems to override any of
my customization. Do I have to hack on something besides .gvimrc?

I'm running Enlightenment, with the GTK libs, if that helps.

The Mandrake PPC edition is built only for G3/G4 processors and the
amount of progress you report is miraculous. Sorry, the device support

Re: [newbie] trouble installing 8.0

Have you tried it with one of the smaller 2.2 kernels? I know there is a
way to boot to the 2.2.19 based installer when using CD's. Is this
posible when using floppies? Might be something to consider.

My biggest question here is, is it really worth the time to try and
install the i586 based LM 8.0 onto a 486? Doesn't that really defeat the
purpose?

If you have rpmdrake installed, then you can automate this process. You
can access it from the Mandrake Control Center. Since both enlightenment
and eterm are on your CDs, rpmdrake will install al the other necessary
software as well.

Yes, thanks! I was confused about whether I had to install the whole 198 mb

Now that you've installed it w/ the -net, you need to run the setup
program again for each user, so the program can install settings in
their home directories.

You'll find the soffice executable in the location you install it to
after you run setup from each user.

Make sense?

What they are talking about is a cable inside the computer, from the cd
drive to the sound card. There should be three cables connected to the
computer:
   * a wide ribbon cable with a 40 pin plug (by far the biggest cable)
   * a power cable (actually, usually 4 separate wires) (trace it back
to the power supply -- all the drives and the motherboard will have
wires from the power supply)
   * the audio cable -- the smallest cable -- sometimes it looks like
one wire, sometimes two -- it is actually two shielded cables (or a
twisted shielded pair sometimes?). It will have a small four pin
connector, and the other end will be plugged into your sound card.

If you do not have this cable, I'm not sure you can get audio from your
cd under Linux. (I think I heard about a way to do it, but I'm not
sure.)

I took a real early look at KDE3 some weeks ago. Not impressed.
MOF, I hope the "kiddie, windoze-like" graphics an' eye candy DOESN'T

If this is what's needed to "get Linux on the desktop" .. oh
$#%%!!.Currently KDE3b2 is in cooker /contribs. Gives me the

At least in the early stages, XF-4.2 has crud for fonts, even AA'd.
I was usin AA'd X-4.1/KDE2 Lucidux Sans system wide for some time.
Considered it better than importing M$ TT fonts (ie, drakfont, M$ Comic
Sans). Not so right now... and it's difficult goin back.

Since the testing route for 8.2 seems to be cooker only ... that is
to say the Christmas Cooker ISO release (which I'm usin, updated to
current), and beta1 is right now, It's, your guess. Civileme
probly knows.

My take is that the beta period is gonna be longer than in the past,
or you can expect 8.2 final within a bout'a month. Either way, expect
a much improved 8.1 ... well unless KDE3 is included as is ... yuk !

Not to bust bubbles, but if you (anybody on this list) had problems
installin 8.1 on your hardware ... 8.2 might convince you it's probly a
user or hardware problem. Conversely, expect the '8.2 sux, I'm goin

No, it looks like a gzipped driver :) When modprobing a module or editing
/etc/modules.conf don't use a .o or .o.gz extension, don't worry about them
otherwise.

> What's up? What do I have to do to get

Well, RH7.2 and LM8.1 use different kernels and asssociated modules (version
differences and distro specific patching), and _both_ distro's can use either
the kernel(AKA OSS/Free) or the ALSA drivers for sound. From a previous post I
understood LM8.1 HardDrake recognised your card and wanted to use ALSA, what
went wrong? And don't forget to raise volumes and unmute relevant channels,
ALSA safely mutes everything.

You can try 'adding the 'sound' lines to the LM /etc/modules.conf' of course.

But, in your earlier post you said:

sndconfig says "ESS Technology|ESS 1969 Solo 1 Audiodrive is not
supported"

Sndconfig is the (originally RedHat) setup utility for the OSS/Free drivers.
Maybe RH7.2 has newer versions then LM8.1 (sndconfig and drivers)...

I hope to avoid confusion by adding that esssolo1 is the OSS/Free driver and
snd-card-es1938 is the ALSA one.

Paolo, this sounds a little confusing to me. Normally hda is the
harddisk, attached as "master" on the first IDE-bus. It seems that
you've got a CD-writer attached as "slave" to your second IDE-bus.A
typical setup would be to attach a CD-reader (CDROM) to either "slave"
on the first IDE-bus (hdb) or (in your case) to "master" on the second
IDE-bus (hdc). I don't understand how you intend to play a music-CD from
your harddisk (hda) ???

I'd recommend, that you attach your CD-reader (CDROM) to "master" on the
second IDE-bus (hdc). Then, as root, edit /etc/lilo.conf to something
like :

image=/boot/vmlinuz
   label=Linux
   root=/dev/hda2
   initrd=/boot/initrd.img
   append=" hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi devfs=mount "
   vga=791
   read-only
the important line being : append=" hd(your CD-drive here)=ide-scsi "
which tells the kernel to "see" your ATAPI CD-ROM as a SCSI-device.
After editing this file, remember to run lilo (at a command-prompt, type
: lilo).
Then reboot to let the kernel know the changes.

Now XCDroast should recognize both drives. Also, change your settings in
the CD-player to /dev/scd0 and it should play from the CD-Reader (hdc).
Finally, go to the mixer-panel and turn the PCM-channel off. Play.

Hope this helps.

Re: [newbie] cannot hear cd

2002-01-25 Thread bascule

if you don't have a cable from your cdrom to your soundcard then you will
have problems, the traditional for computers to play audio cds was to
transfer the sound in analogue form along a cable from the cdrom to the
soundcard, even when cdroms first became capable of digital audio extraction
and people strated ripping mp3s etc. this was still the case, though in some
case instead of an analogue cable a digital transfer was made but still using
a special cable (both drive and soundcard have to support this), but now,
later versions of windows transfer audio data from audion cds via the data
bus in digital form, personally i think that there is some merit to this but
it does mean that oem systems integrators like to save the small amount of
money that omitting a cable brings, as far as i know the standard linux way
of playing audio cds is still to use the analogue/digital cable, i have yet
to hear of a cdrom/dvd that doesn't have the connector for this cable or of
the soundcard that doesn't have the connector, your solution would seem to be
to purchase and fit one! here in the uk they can be had for about £4.00
you will need to check your drive to see what outputs you have are on the
back and check your soundcard as well

There's an audio cable that goes directly from a jack on the back of
your CD drive to a connector on the soundcard inside the computer. Open
your computer's case; If you don't have this audio cable connected, you
won't be able to listen to audio CDs.

[newbie] argggggg installing software

2002-01-25 Thread Paul Kraus

I have tried to install enlightenment and eterm. now both of these fail
because they need other rpms installed so I download those rps and they fail
because the need other rpms to install. this is utterly ridiculuos. Is there
so way to have to software retrieve the files that it needs or am I going to
have to play secret agent and spend 3 hours d/l rpm after rpm to find out I
still need more rpms. so frustrated

[newbie] Security

2002-01-25 Thread Curt Tresenriter

I have bastille configured for medium security and just ran the 'who' command
and found two users logged in.
Being that I am the sole user, it seems that there are other things I sould
be doing to harden the system.
I'm used to Zone Alarm notifying me of any attempts to break in. Is there
something similar in Linux to aid me in monitoring security?
What else can I do to deny access to crackers?

Thanks,

I am trying to listen from an ide 16xdvd-cd on /dev/hda (there is also a
cdrw on /dev/hdd (system set it to /dev/scd0 but to start xcdroast I had
to make changes, this is another long boring story).

1) I can see and access normal data from /dev/hda.
2) I can hear system sounds and .wav files
3) arts volume control is set to max.
4) mixer channels are all not muted (green light on) and volumes set to

5) kscd is configured to device /dev/hda by editing

kscd, it always ends with error 11 sigsegv); /dev/cdrom doesn't exist on
my sistem;there is /dev/cdroms but kscd set to this doesn' even see the cd.
6) /dev/hda is unmounted
7) entry in /etc/fstab is:
/dev/hda /mnt/cdrom auto user,

Re: [newbie] Configuring a scanner w/Sane in LM 8.1?

2002-01-25 Thread Erylon

This hasn't helped me much, with my parallel port scanner. I have a Microtek
e-3 plus, which is supported , but I can't get it recognized. Also, I can't
get xscanimage as a drop-down option with gimp, either. I created a symlink
to /usr/bin/xscanimage in my ~/.gimp-1.2/plug-ins directory, but it still
doesn't show up in gimp. The docs make it look like it should be simple, but
it isn't, so my guess is very few people have managed to get their parallel
scanners working, and that's the reason for the lack of help on the subject.

[newbie] postfix: can't receive email

2002-01-25 Thread ajax

I sent something earlier but I don't think it got through.
I'm having problems receiving mail with postfix. I had it working before but
now it isn't. When I send email to my computer from a remote address , it
doesn't make it and I get an email stating that the connection was
refused(at the remote email address) by my home computer. I can send email
to myself from my home computer and outgoing mail reaches its destination ok.
It sounds like a firewall issue to me but I can't find anything wrong with
my bastille setup.
Any ideas?
Thanks

[newbie] autologin to wrong desktop

2002-01-25 Thread Harry Ellis

My Mandrake 7.2 automatically boots to user "Harry", which
is good,
and Enlightenment, which is inconvenient. I want to end up
in KDE.

It always did until I played around with Enlightenment for
awhile. The
odd thing is that if I ever change users, KDE shows as the
default,
and the computer loads into KDE when I type my password
without me
having to change anything,

1. I have logged out of Enlightenment, gone into "Harry"
with KDE, played
around, logged out, unchecked and rechecked save session,
and shutdown. The
autologin on a new boot goes directly to Enlightenment.

2. If I change to Harry from anywhere, KDE is the choice
showing. I never
have to select it. It loads KDE. But not at boot time.

3. When I looked in /etc./sysconfig/desktop with an editor,
it says "KDE".

4. If I go through KDE Control to system>login manager,
there is no
"convenience", as apparently there is in later KDE's. (Mine
is 2.0). I can
find no gui for autologin, if that's what it's called.

5. Looked at /home/harry/.wmrc with an editor and it says
KDE.

Now I am willing to live without Autoload if I can go
straight to my penguin
heads (the technical term for those who didn't know it) so I
can choose the
user.But I don't know how
to do this either. That would be quicker than going in and
then out of
Enlightenment. But I would prefer an autologin to Harry with
KDE.

Anyone familiar with this problem?

   Just because ;-)

Seriously, the old rule of thumb was "/swap should be 2 x ram". This
is very dated, but might still apply if your runnin a (networked)
server with lot'sa users and/or huge databases. Back when most
desktops had 8, 16, 32, even 64 mb of ram, it also appropriately
applied. 'Course way back then, /swap was limited to 128 mb. Which also
has become obsolete old news.

Opinions vary, but I believe the current consensus is that /swap
should be about 2 x ram, but up to a happy medium of about 200mb, for
most current desktop systems. At least that's my take too. I've got
512mb hard ram, and'a 180mb /swap. I rarely get more'n 20 mb's into
/swap. IOW's , about 160mb of unused disk space... no matter how
crazy'a stuff I do ;)

You might also hear that the newest 2.4.x kernels want more swap.
My experience is just the opposite. Early ones did, >= 2.4.12 don't.
2.4.17's seem to be on a diet ;)

 ~ $ free -m [system's been up for several days, 24/7]
   total used free sharedbuffers cached
Mem: 501496 5 0 58302
-/+ buffers/cache: 135365
Swap:180 2178

 ~ $ uname -r
2.4.17-6athlon

Jus'to digress a bit, but pertinent. Memory management will vary
depending on your kernel, and your system usage. The 'athlon' kernel
I'm usin was just an experiment on my part. I compiled a Mandrake
2.4.17-6mdk usin the default Mandrake .config, edited only for
processor optimization. (1.4 Tbird, oc'd to 1.55 gig, ram at 135 mhz,
CL2,4-bank-IL)

It actually tested a touch slower. I only did it 'cause I kept
readin various recent claims of increased performance and better memory
management with > 2.4.16 optimized for AMD. Neither proved true. The
only reason well three .. that I keep it is because; I also
re-compiled again, trimming out stuff I don't use (ie, smaller, lighter
kernel), now it's about as quick as Mandrake's default i586, and I'm to
lazy to switch back to the 'regular' Mandrake 2.4.17-6mdk ;~>>

Check out 'man fstab' and 'man mount' for a full list of options.

[newbie] I can't install HP Laserjet 1200

2002-01-25 Thread Bryan Wheelock
I have been going around in circles trying to install a LJ 1200 on my mandrake 8.1 system. When I go to control center > printer >configure
I set cups to start automatically on boot
add printer
local printer
name printer 'printer"
select HP Laserjet 1200

the drop down menu vanishes, so I then click on DONE

to check that installation was correct, I go to HP LaserJet Control Panel
that generates an error:
Unable to parse "/etc/printcap" file - so I sent copy of that file to kde.org as requested

What can I do to set this up and get it to work.
Most of the mandrake documentation assumes their are no bugs and I can't figure out how to get around them or to fix it.

I can not install the software. I am running a gateway solo 5300 laptop. 733
mhz p3 with 196megs of ram. I click on setup it starts but right before the
first dialog appears it locks. Screen has background install image and the
options box is completly blank except the next button. You cant click on
anything and if I move the mouse around it starts slowing the whole system
down. It puts vertical lines across the screen. Then it completly freezes.
The only thing I can do is shift alt f1. log in kill the .setup and the
.setup.bin processes. then I have to wait like a minute or two. Then I can
switch back to kde and everything works fine. I need the app. I have to able
to reliably work with MS office files. Once I can do this and prove it to the
powers that be I will be able to switch the entire office over to linux.

listed explicitly is Intel 82815 graphics controller)

Although I can get rid of the hash marks with a 640x480 display setting,
that's not what I want to be looking at 6 hrs. a day.

Here's the question. What can you tweek to get rid of the hash marks
without sacrificing 800x600 resolution?
Can you change the hsync or vertical settings in the XF86Config file, or
something?

Thanks for any help.

Almost. StarOffice was/is the Sun product, which became open sourced.
When it became open sourced, certain features / programs incorporated in

OpenOffice is the ongoing development of the StarOffice open source

I think, but am not sure, that StarOffice also continues to be developed

Paul:
Civileme posted an explanation about swap sizing last month. It should be at
the newbie archives under the heading, "Preemptive strike #4 SWAP". My
reading is that the guidelines for sizing the swap partition depend upon
which kernel you are using:
2.0 - limited to 127 MB maximum
2.2 - twice RAM up to 250 MB, then equal or smaller
2.4 - "all you can spare"
His posting also includes a reference to an IBM whitepaper in case you want

[newbie] Ogle question...

Hi. I setup Ogle for use with my Toshiba SCSI2 DVD player. Its /mnt/cdrom and
/dev/scd0. I'm using Ogle's GUI and it works, but it always looks for
/dev/dvd, I think.

I copied the /usr/share/ogle/oglerc file to /home/darklord/.oglerc, and
changed the path from /dev/dvd to /dev/scd0. This seems to work okay, I can
play a DVD from the moment the GUI launches, but is there some other/another
way that I was supposed to do it/set it up? I went to the Ogle web site and
read the FAQ but didn't find any more specific info.

Thanks.

Well, maybe not yet. ;-)

I am developing a website, WikiLearn, which I hope will address this
issue. See http://twiki.org/cgi-bin/view/Wikilearn and follow the
AboutThesePages link -- read the "Goals" and "Beginner and Reminder
Pages" sections.

You won't find much of use yet, but you're welcome to look. Even more,
you (and everybody) are welcome to record your learning experiences
there. I do ask that you register at
http://twiki.org/cgi-bin/view/TWiki/TWikiRegistration. The registration
procedure is not onerous. You enter your name, your email address, and
the country you're from, and pick a password and a WikiName (username
for TWiki, in UpperCamelCase).

WikiLearn is indexed on Google, but I haven't quite pinpointed the
update cycle (it may be one to two months). There is a search engine on
WikiLearn, but I like Google better if I think that what I'm looking for
is old enough to have been indexed by Google. Search Google using a
query like [site:twiki.org ].

I'd like to move WikiLearn to its own site, and I have an approved
project on SourceForge. If anyone with Perl, web administration, HTML,
or bash scripting experience wants to help (or wants to get experience),
let me know -- I have a list of ToDos on my personal TWiki that I can
move to WikiLearn (and update). This includes things like setting up
TWiki (I've now done it three times, but not very well on SourceForge),
writing some scripts to aid in that process (things like adding webs,
setting permissions, and local and remote using ssh and rsync), setting
up the email notification and statistics (and fixing the statistics
script), and converting the (HTML) templates that are used on my home
TWiki to the new style used with the last two releases of TWiki.

Randy Kramer

PS: I guess my alternative answer might be "there is no quick way to
learn Linux". It's not entirely true, and it depends on your
objectives. I tried to move to Linux about 18 months ago with the idea
of learning it (and Perl, C++, make, CVS, Python, etc.) very quickly.

(After all, I basically minored in computer science in school (while

[newbie] Open TCP and UDP ports

2002-01-25 Thread Mario Descalzi

Hello, my name is Mario Descalzi amd am a
programmer acting as system administrator; if your advise is to "ask your
system adm." that would be me again. Have Linux Mandrake 7.0 with two ethernet
cards one (192.168.1.1) for LAN and the other (www address); also have a Voice
over IP (Planet VIP-400) device on my LAN (192.168.1.160). My counter part, a
non Linux person, asked me to open the tcp 1720 port and udp ports 3 to
31000, also redirect all trafic on these ports to LAN 192.168.1.160. My
installation does not have iptables only ipchains. Could any one comment how
coul I address this request?

Thanks.

Looks like you need Squid and SquidGuard

Squid is a first class proxy server. If you have a number of clients sharing
an internet access, then Squid will substantially reduce latency by caching
frequently served pages locally.

SquidGuard is a plug in for Squid to administer browsing policies in the same
way as Surf Control.

Naturally because this is Linux, both products are GPL, and totally free. But
if they do the job your company needs I'm sure they would appreciate a
donation.

Both products can be administered by Webmin. I have used Squid it is real
easy, I've never used SquidGuard.

Both products are on your Mandrake CD's, and here are the uRL's

That seems to correlate with the recommendation I heard -- that swap
less than 2x RAM was not useful for some versions of the 2.4 kernel,
due to a bug or problem of some sort.

I know that's not true for all kernels.

Re: [newbie] internet monitoring

2002-01-25 Thread Mark Lucas

The simplest way I can think of to achieve this is to use squid (proxy
server) and squidGuard. You can set Squid up as a transparent proxy so that
is automatically intercepts all calls on port 80. Squid Guard is very
configurable and can block/allow site by user, time or ip address. You can
even set squid to validate users from your SMB user database if you're using
SMB.

The best thing about it is that it's free and it works brilliantly!

Re: [newbie] Basic Network

2002-01-25 Thread Derek Jennings

There is a nice two pager on NFS in the documents section at
www.mandrakeuser.org

One thing to remember the tutorial does not make clear :-
You must have exactly the same users in both computers, and they must have
identical user id numbers. So for example user 'poolgle uid=501' on computer
A may only access files that user 'poogle uid=501' is entitled to access on
computer B. The same goes for Group identifiers.

Once you have NFS working kwikdisk is a useful way of mounting your NFS
shares with a quick mouse click.

Sounds like my home network and the proxy is only to keep my kids from
hitting stuff they don't need to see because they mis-typed
cartoonnetwork.com. Anyway, a Mandrake box can do your DHCP for you, just
click the Internet Connection Sharing wizard in the control panel and when
you are done your Mandrake box will server DHCP, act as a cahcing DNS
machine and once you set up Squid it will also be your proxy server.
Samba will be your friend. You can set up groups and do restrictions.
Have some patience with it when setting up, but it should do what you
mention above.

What, exactly, are you trying to do? If both machines have IP addresses
on the same network, then they should be able to ping each other. Can
they?

Are you wanting to emulate a Windows-type "Network Neighborhood"? If so,
then you need to install Samba server and client on each machine, then
configure them.

Alternatively, you could go with Linux' native NFS, which is more
powerful than Samba. It lets you mount network filesystems in a similar
manner that you would map a network drive in Windows, but it also
maintains proper file permissions and executable capabilities between
Linux boxes.

No, but I have now...
Yes it is fast, and I prefer the two pane layout. The downside is I cannot
get drag and drop to work to the other applications. Is there a gtk version?,
Drag and drop should work in that.

One issue I currently have with xftree, is I have difficulty getting it to
recognise double mouse clicks for opening documents. If you know where the
configuration file is that controls this I would be obliged.

[newbie] Deleting footer text with procmail

2002-01-25 Thread Ralph Slooten

Sorry if this seems unethical, however has anyone managed to make a
procmail formulae that can delete this annoying
"Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com";

Yes, I understand that one is supposed to read this, and trust me I have
(like 1 times now), but I am a bit sick of it :-(

Any ideas would be great :-)

Thanks,
Ralph

[newbie] That perl problem again

2002-01-25 Thread Robin Turner

Every time I've tried to install a perl program/module I get the
following message:

Error: Unable to locate installed Perl libraries or Perl source code

This despite the fact that Mandrake (8.1) seems to have installedPerl
in one of the locations looked for by the make program.

I trawled the archives for this one - could find the similar
questions, but no answers.

[newbie] Tiny Emacs

2002-01-25 Thread Charles Muller

I am trying to learn how to use the Emacs package that came with ML 8.1, but
the program runs as a tiny window in one corner of my screen, with
microscopic menu fonts. Is there a way to make this window larger, with
larger menu fonts?

[newbie] HP Printers

2002-01-25 Thread Trevor Rhodes

Hello Everyone,

Can any of you with late model HP printers let me know about drivers and
support?  I'm looking to buy one this weekend and would like to have a bit of
information before I outlay the cash.

Trevor
