Re: [newbie] OK New install, probs with virtual Terms
To see if your last boot-up has succeeded go to /var/log/boot.log and trot on down to the last line of text. Perhaps you should check /var/log/syslog. The last few lines of this "ongoing" log are repeated on the F12 screen. If they match then rest assured you have a perfectly normal system. Also is there a flashing cursor at the bottom of the F12 screen. It would be interesting to force an error (don't ask me how) and see if a new line is appended to the log on F12 at the same time as syslog. I think it is a neat facility to have available to us. It's use: A program dies, or you have to kill it. Once you have cleared it from memory "Ctrl Alt F12" and it tells you what happened. It seems to be a bonus not a problem Femmey. Much easier to keep up with what is happening on your box. And while we are on the subject of logs. Be aware that you shouldn't turn off your machine overnight. Read up on logrotate "man logrotate". At 4:00AM or 4:30AM this little program rotates all your logs for you. Some nightly and some weekly as a cron job. The frequency of rotation and time has been preset by the helpful Mandrake Gurus so that the logs that are kept in the /var/log directory dont just keep growing and growing and growing. What happens is xxxlog5 gets dumped xxxlog4 gets renamed xxxlog5 xxxlog3 gets renamed xxxlog4 xxxlog2 gets renamed xxxlog3 xxxlog1 gets renamed xxxlog2 xxxlog gets renamed xxxlog1 some have a new empty xxxlog created for them. I may have some of this wrong but most of it is right - because i have delved in elbow deep and "RTFM" to help me sort it in my own head, and to help me sort out a logrotate issue in MDK7.1 that i am currently using. Sorry about the bandwidth but i hope this helps our distressed lady friend ;) Michael Damian Gatabria wrote: > > El jue, 07-03-2002 a las 00:24, FemmeFatale escribió: > > More than anything I just want to know if its a bug. to the best of my knowledge you only get 6 term sessions by default, and that is what you are seeing on F1-F6. i seem to recall that the 6 session are the six mingetty programs you will see if you open a monitor program like system guard. could be wrong there, i never got into that end of things. i also assume that if you _really_ needed them for some reason you could open more. i have only found a use for two at a time (plus the xsession) myself. :-) On Wednesday 06 March 2002 19:24, FemmeFatale opened a hailing frequency and transmitted: > More than anything I just want to know if its a bug. [newbie] virus scanners (again)
I know there was a recent discussion of virus scanners, and how they are not necessary unless it is to protect Windows clients. Well, that is just the situation I am in. I want to set up a server to experiment with educational applications of GPL/Open Source/Free Software, but the MIS guys won't let me connect to our network until I can assure them the Linux server won't pass on virii to our Novell NetWare network. A google search reveals some vendors such as TrendMicro, Panda, even McAffee, but these all seem to be geared to RedHat, SuSe, and Debian. Any opinions on how to proceed? Should these work with Mandrake? Thanks, Todd -- Todd Slater No use to shout at them to pay attention. Re: [newbie] OT, I know this is a LM List, but...
Has anyone tried installing or had experience with RH 7.2? I have several partitions, thanks to Partition Magic 7. Great program. However when I tried to install RH 7.2, I had a problem. Seems it will NOT install to anything but a primary partition. What gives? My current drive looks like this: Windows FAT32 drive D: Primary Part. Windows Extended Partion on same drive (physical drive): Primary Linux Mandrake install on same drive again: Logical (/Root)Ext2, Reiser Linux Mandrake install on same drive again: Logical (/Swap),Ext2 Linux Mandrake install on same drive again: Logical (/Home?)Ext2, Reiser Linux: Logical, soon to be I hoped the RH 7.2 partition, Ext2 Now, PM 7, sees those partitions as EXT2 partitions. And only 2 partitions are Primary as you can see. The Fat32 partition is "Hidden" as only one Primary may be visible to Windows 2k at once. The visible one being the extended one *though I'd like to change that, I can't find a way to do it yet, and make the Extended partition the hidden one*. Anyway, when I go to install RH2 it gives me an error saying it can't install to anything but a Primary partition. Now, in the installer I've tried to "force" a Primary partition, but no go. Any ideas??? Thx, Femme Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

More than anything I just want to know if its a bug. Yes, my F1-6 are normal "term text only" login screens. IE, they have a $login: on the screen only. But the F12 term seems to be kind of whacked. No, I hadn't answered your question before. And no, I don't need more than 6 terms. In fact, I've yet to use any for now, except once or twice. Re: [newbie] HSP56 Pctel modem - better explanation
Hi, pctel-0.8.6.tar.gz was the first driver I downloaded, I couldn't make it work so I tried another drivers after that. Here are the steps i took with the driver you mention, I unpacked the tarball, then i typed ./configure --with hal=i810sis the includes were not found so I made a link to that directory as root user, didn't work either so I fixed it like the FAQ says mkdir -p /usr/src/linux/include/linux touch /usr/src/linux/include/linux/modversions.h then I typed again ./configure --with hal=i810sis this time with better results, after that I typed make, but then with make install I get unresolved symbols, so I run ./fixscript in pctel.o and ptserial.o to get rid of those errors. Pctel seems to work fine, I can type insmod pctel, but with ptserial.o I still get unresolved symbols even with the fix ./fixscript ptserial.o new_ptserial.o. And that's where I'm stuck, is there any work around or something I'm missing? Thanks for your time Paul At 08:12 p.m. 05/03/2002, you wrote: >What driver did you use for this modem? Well the MB has a 266 Mhz FSB, but I guess that when the bus speed is set to 133 the DDR RAM bus is running at 266??? the overcloking feature only affects the FSB (Front Side Bus) it goes up in 1 mhz increments, but the max is 233. (thats where I am confused when it says it has a 266 MHZ FSB) In the first part of the book it mentions to make a note of the processors speed. then it shows a chart [ ] 1.0GHz(133X7.5) [ ] 1.13GHz(133X8.5) [ ] 1.2GHz(133X9) [ ] 1.3GHz((133X10.0 [ ] 1.4GHz(133X10.5) So my processor is 1.4GHz Now in the BIOS Setup it has CPU Ratio Setup with options of 6.0X, 6.5X, 7.0X, 8.0X, 9.0X, 9.5X, 10.0X, 10.5X, 11.0X, 11.5X, 12.0X, 13.0X, 14.0X, and AUTO Mine is currently set on AUTO But it may be beneficial to set it to 10.5 ??? maybe auto is 10.5 but I don't know It's an interesting MB, has promise raid controller, which can be disbaled and used for an additional 4 IDE devices (total 8 IDE devices) WOW -- Gerald Waugh Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] installing rpms
Heather, No thickness or slowness is evident. Your willingness to ask "simple" questions is I am sure appreciated by many readers of this list. Anyway... The great thing about RPMs is that they know what to do with themselves. I find the easiest way to deal with them is to download to my home drectory and then in a console do the following: rpm -ivh name-of-app.rpm The ivh means: Install Verbose Hash Install is obvious. Verbose means tell me what you are doing. Hash means to print out 50 hash marks indicating progress. If you are upgrading a package rather than installing it the first time, substitute a "U" (uppercase) for the "i". (Note: NEVER do this if installing a kernel). One other useful tip is for when you are installing a number of packages which depend on each other. Rather than trying to sort out which to install first, just put them all in a directory, cd to it and say: rpm -ivh * or rpm -Uvh * if upgrading. The U option will be the same as "i" if the package was not previously installed BTW. Now - it worked, but where did it go? The answer - it depends. You knew that didn't you? ;-) Usually it will end up with the executable in /usr/bin, which will be on your path. First thing to try is to log in as a normal user (you did the RPM thing as root of course) and type the app's name in a console. If this works, you know you are looking for a binary of that name in a directory on your path (probably /usr/bin). If it's a GUI app and you would like to make an icon for it, do this in KDE or something similar in other environments: right click on the desktop click on "Create New" click on "Link to Application" click on the "Execute" tab click on "Browse" find your app and select it click on the "General" tab replace the words "Link to Application" with whatever name you would like to appear under your icon click on the gear icon and select something appropriate (or not) click OK Now you should be able to execute your new app by clicking on the icon. Finally, there is also a more scientific method find the files. After you have installed the rpm, use the command: rpm -ql package-name this will list all the files, including directories. Sometimes it can be tricky working out what the package name really was. rpm -qa | grep first-part-of-name can be useful here. The qa is query all, which by itself gets you a complete list of all RPMs installed. The "| grep ..." bit pipes the output of the query into grep and searches for the characters you typed. Here's an example: $ rpm -qa | grep kernel kernel-2.4.8-26mdk kernel-source-2.4.8-26mdk kernel-doc-2.4.8-26mdk kernel-2.4.8-34.1mdk kernel-headers-2.4.8-26mdk HTH Brian On Thu, 2002-03-07 at 09:17, Heather Reed wrote: > Hi again > Sorry to be asking all these stupid questions. [newbie] installing rpms
Hi again Sorry to be asking all these stupid questions. I uninstalled gaim from software manager, and downloaded a newer version, which I have stored in my root directory. However, I can't get either software manager or package manager to find it (KDE). In package manager I set /rrot/ as a search path, but still nothing. I tried to install it by clicking on the icon, and it went through an install procedure, telling me it had been installed successfully, but there is no icon for it, so if it has installed, I don't know where it is! I know I am still mentally in windows, so have probably done something wrong :-(( So - when I download rpms from the net, where do I put them so that they can be seen by package manager or software manager, or alternatively, how do I know the right directory to install them to using the console or whatever is needed? Your proc spends most of its time waiting for something to do. This is alleviated some what by running DDR or Rambus, but it is still where you need to focus you attention. The small gain you get from OC will result in a few frames in Q3 or something. You will only notice the difference in headaches caused by instability issues and buying new parts. Believe me, I know If you really wanted to see some perf. increases, get one of the newer MoBo's that allow the Ram to run at a different bus speed than the rest of the system. Then plunk down some cash for some 'certified' 333 DDR Ram from Crucial or somebody. That way you can ramp you Mem bus to 167/333 Dual pumped and leave the rest at 133 and have less probs. So you can't CPU Multi overclock since all Athlons, reg and XP are locked. And 1.4 is the correct clock for a 1700+ XP. So in this case FSB overclocking is your only real option. Of course that can mess up plenty of stuff (PCI bus, etc.) By that I mean, instability as the FSB speed increases, with a small possibility of damage. Most places I have seen place 150MHz as a upper limit that is very hard to acheive. If you really are interested in overclocking, you should look at some hardware oriented sites, such as www.overclockers.com www.arstechnica.com the MaximumPC forums has a decent OC community. In my opinion, to OC you need good cooling, determination, and a fat wallet to replace broken parts! Jeff Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

IIRC, 7 is the max that the lilo boot screen will display. If that's the case, just remove the unwanted entries from lilo.conf or grub's menu.lst. Run 'lilo' 'Course 'rpm -e' will remove unwanted kernel rpms, eg, 'rpm -e kernel-2.4.17.21mdk-1-1mdk' . You should also check /usr/src/linux and /lib/modules/ to make sure the corresponding kernel/module folders were removed. If not, you can delete them. I wouldn't advise hand deleting anything from /boot 'less you really know what you're doin. MOF, it'd be a good idea to check that the links in /boot actually are pointing where it's intended (ie, the 'right' kernels), before you remove any kernel. I use this /etc/bashrc alias, alias bootlinks='ll /boot/{initrd,vmlinuz,System.map}*' At least initrd and vmlinuz should point to the right kernels. EG, typing 'bootlinks' displays (among a lot of others) that the kernel I'm using is properly pointed to lrwxrwxrwx1 root root 22 Mar 4 12:12 /boot/initrd-K7.img -> initrd-2.4.17-21K7.img lrwxrwxrwx1 root root 19 Mar 4 12:12 /boot/vmlinuz-K7 -> vmlinuz-2.4.17-21K7 There's other ways to uninstall kernels, but I've not used them, ie, SoftwareManager > Remove, and 'urpme ' If you should ever manage to get your system so it won't even boot, boot the install CD and choose 'expert' and 'upgrade' ;) -- Tom Brinkman Corpus Christi, Texas, USA Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Athalon 1700+ running on Dragon Plus MB
Does the system work beautifully? Good. Don't touch it. You've got 1.46Ghz... 1.48 isn't gonna do you much good. Be happy with what you have and don't risk doing damage to your processor. On a related note, as for overclocking, if you begin to play with the bus speed remember that it throws everything else in your system out of whack. moving from 133 to 135 to 137 changes your PCI from 33 to 34 to 35 and quite a few devices REALLY don't like leaving the default 33Mhz. However if you're planning on playing anyways, you will need to "fool" with the CPU volts as, as you increase the processor speed it will require more power to operate. The easiest way to do this, increase the speed a little at a time, and when the system becomes unstable, try givin it a little more juice. It will tell you if your CPU is the problem or another device. Finally, though your memory should be able to do it w/o a problem, when adjusting your FSB you will also be changing the speed at which your memory is opearting. It "Should" take atleat a few Mhz, but after that the higher you go the more likely you are to have issues. Hope that answers your questions. And for god sakes, don't over clock... [newbie] Athalon 1700+ running on Dragon Plus MB
This thing is running quite well and seems real snappy running X Now I want to know about fine-tunning it. What are people using for overclocking? and what CPU Freq Multiplier? I have the multiplier on AUTO, so I am not sure what speed the CPU is running at. /proc/cpuinfo says 1.4 Ghz but I think it gets that from the CPU not actual clock. And do I want to fool with the cpu volts? I am not using overclocking, bus is set for 133 MHZ TIA for any info -- Gerald Waugh Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] single network firewall configuration problem
Hi guys, I'm trying to install a SNF to protect the computer of my research group , cos we are not very happy with the security offered by the university netrwork. All the computer have port 80 and 25(i think cos of the internal mail system) open on the external world and they work with NT on any other windows with Novel netware. we also have a spare PC on which I started installing the SNF by mandrakeit picks up the ip address automatically from the DHCP but when I tried to configure it from another PC using the web configuration tool it let me connect just once ...it looks like the university network recognized that that pc is working on a different port (8443 I think) and so it stopped the comunications.shall I ask the networking technicians to allow the communications on that port for that IP address or is there a way to make it work on port 80 ( and if yes...would it be safe???) any other help and advice is very much appreciated. thanks to every one ion advance Bye Maurizio __ Abbonati a Tiscali! open a text console (or term) to log in (as root you if you need to kill a program started as root, type su [enter] root [enter] type password for root, do not expect to see anything echped to screen as you type the password) type "top" [enter] (without the quotes) and look for gaim there are a few ways to sort top, and a few ways to get the same info (ps aux gives the whole she-bang of running processes) then you will see the number of the processes "gaim" started. and in top, you can do k 3407 [enter, enter] (changing 3407 to match whatever number is the assigned number for the process) On Tuesday 05 March 2002 11:44, you wrote: > Hi all, > I thought I might be able to give you some peace, but no such luck! Re: [newbie] gaim crash - won't go away!
Ctl+Alt+Esc then click on the locked up window There is also an icon on your desktop called XKill Click on that then click on the failed application Ctl+Alt+Backspace to kill your KDE session All this stuff is covered in the manual which is accessed by the Documentation icon on your desktop. file:/usr/share/doc/mandrake/en/ref.html/ts-killing-apps.html To stop gaim starting automatically when you log in, then kill gaim, log off with the 'restore desktop' box checked. Log off. Next time you log on gaim will not start, but be sure that the next time you log off the 'restore session' box is unchecked. People always get confused by the restore session thing. KDE in fact will 'always' restore a session. Checking the box simply tells KDE to restore 'this' session. If the box is not checked it will restore from a previous session when the box 'was' checked. derek On Tuesday 05 March 2002 16:44, you wrote: > Hi all, > I thought I might be able to give you some peace, but no such luck! Re: [newbie] Viewing Linux partition from Windows
i have read about a tool for windows, that enables you at least to mount ext2fs partitions for reading them. on the other hand, you could try vmware, which enables you to even boot your linux-partition in windows and work under linux, independent of the filesystem your linux is installed on.
