Re: [newbie] Getting and installing packages
I've been using Red Carpet to get my Mandrake upgrades, and all of the other goodies that they provide (basically every Linux package out there--including, of course Mozilla). I even decided to pay my $7.95 a month to get access to their high speed services. I suspect that the time may come when I find this service unnecessary, but as a beginner, I have found it extremely helpful to have all of these updates installed automatically. Usually when someone recommends me to download such-and-such a package, with such-and-such a version number, I go to Red Carpet and not only find that it is there, but in a newer version. So far, I have not had a single problem with anything that I have installed through this service. Providing the fans hold up, then yes. Ensure you route cabling correctly. Don't use massively high-spin speed hard drives - they run a lot hotter than slower stuff. Be sensible about the configuration of the machine... 24*7*365 isn't a problem. The important thing is the load on the box. Remeber, the machine will run cooler with a light load on it than it will if you are running Dnet or SETI@home on it all the time. I assume the machine is to be used as a server - and as such will be under stres at times. Would you say this was the case? -Original Message- From: Ricardo Castanho de O. I've tried ext3 and it seemed faster than ext2 but when I went to reinstall it would stop after a few screens and I'd get the message "oops, no root partition found!". There was a root partition. "lpr" is a print command - you're thinking of "lpd", which is the print daemon, and the alternative to CUPS. I only have CUPS installed, and I've never had any problems with non-KDE apps. Check your CUPS configuration and /etc/printcap - if they're set up with defaults (/etc/printcap should just have one line reading "lp:", assuming you have one printer which is locally connected) then you should have no problems. Gqview is on your CD's, probly already installed, it's very much like ACDSee, only much better. You can either r-click on the image and choose 'Full Screen', or the key will make the image full screen. For multiple images you can either start the 'Slide Show' (from a right click), or just press the key. To manually move thru multiple images you can either use the , , or keys to cycle either backwards or forwards. I've used Gqview as my desktop (on all 4, enlarged to full screen without being in full screen mode), starting automagically with KDE, cycling thru (Slide Show) a directory of 63,474 .jpg's at 4 secs each for over a year now. ACDSee won't do that ;) Look on the tool bar on the top left just like in ACDSee. Gqview's configuration and use is very intuitive, you shouldn't have any problems. I've also found it uses much less memory and cpu resources than other viewers, yet loads and runs quickly, even with 63,000+ files ;) The only other viewer of this type with similar fuctionality I've found is a commercial app named Compupic (free for private use). BUT, besides the fact that you should always avoid introducing closed source proprietary software or drivers, as much as possible, onto your system ... Compupic's a real memory/cpu hog. -- Tom Brinkman Corpus Christi, Texas Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

I am only printing with Cups and it works under both KDE and Gnome. Under Gnome, usually the print dialog comes up with "generic printer" or something like that. I simply select the name of my printer from the dropdown list. I do happen to have both KDE and Gnome loaded, so I don't know if that makes a difference. I don't know how Gnome handles things these days, but in KDE, from the main menu, go to Configuration->KDE->Look and Feel->Fonts and make sure you've selected iso-8859-9 in "Character Set" (some fonts will not have this option). Console mode is a different story - I used to know how to do it several installs ago, but I stopped bothering, as I only use console mode for commands (and editing system files when I screw up!). Other applications ... Most apps use the default desktop fonts, so no problems there. In LyX, set it up for Latin5 in document properties (this is for the output, not the screen font). Star/Open Office is problematic, since at least in the version I have, it will always choose iso-8859-1 fonts in preference; the only way I've found round this is to install fonts which only exist as iso-8859-9 (Turkish) fonts. However, I noticed there's a (rather alpha) Turkish version out for Windows, so if and when the Linux version appears, this might solve that particular problem. All we need know is for someone to write aspell/ispell dictionaries for Turkish (not easy for agglutinating languages)! Robin Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Which File system?
Aryan, I asked this question a few days ago. Here is what Civileme, (he _The_ Man in these parts) responded. Your choices are Ext3, Reiser, JFS, and XFS. Ext3 is dog slow, and good only for compatibility with Ext2. Reiser doesn't work well with PostScript, and doesn't work well for for mailservers. JFS takes twice as much storage space to perform its journaling operations, and it must be defraged on occassion (which you would set up as a cron job). XFS, although slower in destroying files, is very fast in all other operations. It works with everything. To quote Civileme, XFS is the "the better choice." As far as Ext2 goes, it's not even an option on any machine that doesn't explicitly need it, IMHO. The benefit of data recovery and integrity far, far outweighs the whatever processing overhead is involved. Re: [newbie] Master & slave drives
maybe i don't understand, but, i just installed 8.2 release canidate 1 on a slave drive with win2000 on the master and i use lilo to boot. IIRC only part of lilo goes onto the MBR of the first disk, the rest is in your boot folder in linux (is that right guys?) and lilo handles booting for both systems. as i said though, i have not done XP. you could install lilo to the second drive i guess, but it wouldn't do anything. you could also not istall lilo and simply use a boot disk. i would certainly be sure to have a working boot disk for XP before i started though. also, once installed, if you wish to remove lilo you can boot to linux and as root run "lilo -u" which if i recall is for -uninstall. :-) On Saturday 16 March 2002 08:30, Joe Barron opened a hailing frequency and transmitted: > Sorry ! [newbie] PCMCIA NIC not recognised
Hi all, I installed MDK 8.1 on my laptop with 'linux noauto' and then installed kernel-pcmcia-cs. If I do a 'cardctl -ident' and look the output up at mobilix.org it seems I have a Sitecom ethernet nic: product info: "PCMCIA", "FastEthernet", "V", "1.0" manfid: 0x021b, ox0202 function: 6 (network) (although when I looked up the mac address somewhere, it said I had an NE2000 compatible) /etc/sysconfig/pcmcia starts with: pcmcia = yes pcic = i82365 (because I edited it). /etc/modules.conf has the right line in it. /etc/pcmcia/config.opts mentions module "ray_cs", but there is a boot-up message from cardmgr about 'axnet_cs'. 'probe' says: PCI bridge probe: not found Intel PCIC probe: not found Databook TCIC-2 probe: not found So something can see and even talk to the card, but I don't have the right driver loaded? Or any driver at all? Will I have to spring for a different card? I've looked at the PCMCIA HOWTO, but it doesn't seem to be starting from where I am. [newbie] Orinoco Wireless Card
Hi, I have a desktop and a laptop both running 8.1 and Orinoco Wavelan Wireless PCMCIA cards. I was able to get the wireless card working on my laptop fairly easily by downloading the driver from the OrinocoWireless.com web site, compiling it and editing the /etc/pcmcia/config.opts file. No such luck on the desktop however. It is automatically detected in the 8.1 install (it is not in the 8.2 install incedentally), but even so after inputting all the parameters I needed during install I was not able to connect to the internet with it. So I then followed the steps I followed for the laptop (meaning I followed the steps in the orinoco wirless driver README to the letter). But afterwords, not only could I still not connect to the internet, but it no longer seems to be detected by my system. WHen I open DrakConf, it doesn't even show I have a network device at all (but when I first installed it did show it, I just couldn't bring it up). I've been using ReiserFS for over a year an' half without ever a problem. It's fast, stable, and recovers quickly and easily from improper shutdowns. A month or so ago when I got 8.2b2 CD's I thought I'd try XFS since it's gettin the best recommends lately. I only used it for 2 days. On my system XFS was slightly slower than ReiserFS, and I had a few problems which I suspected were FS related. Specially recovery from an improper shutdown (on purpose). I didn't bother getting to the bottom of it tho. I just went back to my good'ol tried and true ReiserFS. In fairness tho, I like many (but not most), install Linux in one big '/' partition which may have caused ill affects for XFS. It doesn't with ReiserFS. 'Course this is just my experience. Civileme has done extensive FS testing on various hardware. Search the newbie and expert mailing list archives and look for his posts related to filesystems. http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/flists.php3 (look down towards the bottom of the page). Re: [newbie] connection sharing and network with samba
Stojs; I just read the rest of your email. DHCP is installed and configured by ICS when you set it up. That's how ICS can provide your other PC's with an IP address. That's probably not your problem. Your problem sounds like the firewall NOT trusting the network card which connects to your other PC or Hub. Thats why you should check out the file I mentioned in my previous reply. Once this is working again, you'll be able to set up Samba. If Samba was already running before, edit the config file as previously mentioned, and then restart Samba as root - "samba restart". Everything should work fine then. If you decide to use IP Masq in /etc/Bastille/bastille-firewall.conf , disable ICS first, and then, either start dhcp manually, or set up some fixed or static (same thing) IP's on any other machine you have connected to this firewall. If you're going to start dhcp as a separate daemon, make sure you tell bastille which network card will be the one running dhcp. Then restart bastille. Good Luck. Re: [newbie] connection sharing and network with samba
Hey Stojs; You're firewall software has disallowed your internal network card. It doesn't know that this card can be trusted. You'll have to go to "/etc/Bastille" and open the config file - "bastille-firewall.conf" and edit the "Trusted Ifaces" section. Give the whole config file a good read. It's fairly straightforward. There is a way to do ICS without DHCP, and it can be done in this config file, but you'll have to disable the Internet Connection Sharing in Moandrake Control Center first. Look in the config file for IP Masq, and put your subnet's IP range in there ie; 192.168.0.0/24 or 10.0.0.0/24, then go to a root console and type "bastille-firewall-restart" or "bastille-firewall-netstat". I'm not exactly sure of the command, but worst case scenario, you could always restart Bastille. In fact, you shold be able to disable the "Tiny Firewall" in the control center completely, and just edit the bastille config file, then restart the service (bastille), and you should be good to go. Haven't lost anything since and system has gone off due to power outages several times since. There is a processing overhead incurred with the journalling process. Consequently, if you are not interested in data integrity or recovery, ext2 will probably be your best choice. It has no data logging facilities to slow it down. If you change your mind about the data integity priorities, XFS seems to be the best thing going for speed vs data integrity. For those looking for total data safety, ext3 is the best way. I understand that it is the only fs available that provides data journaling mode. The other journaling fs's are metadata logging systems. I run ext3 on an Athlon 964 mhz with raid 0, and it's been plenty fast for me. _ Do You Yahoo!? [newbie] Which File system?
Hi there: Maybe It's an old question and man of you have seen similar questions. But I read the archive and couldn't make up my mind. I am a newbie to Linux and am willing to buy Mandrake Linux 8.2. But I don't know what file system to use. I am willing to install my Linux on my desktop computer. I don't want it to be secure. nor I want it to give me back up options, nor do I use RAID. I just want the fastest File system and I want it to be stable enough ( not that much stable, any thing more stable than FAT will suite me). If possible please also give me a list of File systems that are available with version 8.2 and please tell me which one best suit my needs. Linux Registered user # 266090 Aryan

Re: [newbie] Webproject (Was: Feel like joining in?)
Sebastian, I wasn't what I was thinking about, but sourceforge can become a valuable reference for me. The whole idea is to learn how to do it by just doing it together instead of strugling all alone with a bunch of tutorials and what have you. But thanks for the suggestion. Before the dark times. Before > Microsoft.. Love your sig, Shane. :) But since you are taking this to heart, let me tell you that all that stuff was from memory. As such I need to make two corrections; first I have committed heresy by mispelling Dennis Ritchie's name. I hope that the elite secret Unix Shadow Guild does not manage to penetrate my defenses before I finish this message. ;) Second, the minicomputer that Thompson and Ritchie had assess to was NOT a PDP-11, it was a PDP-7. My bad. While I am still uncrucified, let me add the following. "Space Travel" was a game that Ken Thompson had written and it was running under the Multics OS on a GE 635. Thompson and Ritchie rewrote the game so that it would run on the PDP-7. The catch was that the devel work had to be done under GECOS (a batch oriented OS), then the project was to move the finished programs to the PDP-7 for execution, using paper tape. Ken Thompson was so aggravated with the complications involved that he decided to create a file system and some utilities for the PDP-7. This primitive OS was given the name "Unix" in the following year (1970). At this time there was no portable language invented to port Unix with; Thompson had written it entirely in PDP-7 assembler. The Unix OS got attention immediately after it's initial creation. On a promise that they would add text processing capabilites to the OS, they received a PDP-11 minicomputer in exchange. Sometime in this timeframe, Ken Thompson wrote a computer language that would make it easier to port the Unix OS to other hardware. He christened it "B". Dennis Ritchie then brought his legendary talents to bear on the problem, and together with Ken they rewrote the language. They then called it "C". _ Do You Yahoo!?
