I really liked xwpe for it's simplicity and resemblance to the old Borland C IDE; but Kdevelop has some advantages that you can't ignore. First, it's the most complex of the ide's above. It's also the most functional and productive. One thing that's a real mind blower about Kdevelop is that makefile, documentation, and binary packaging provisions were built right into the IDE. It sets up sample documentation and configuration files that are exactly in line with the generally accepted packaging standard for GNU rpm and tarballs across the net. If you're using Kdevelop you are automatically compatible and up to date with the latest program packaging standards. That's a HUGE time saver. That also means that if you've never manually assembled a binary package for public consumption, Kdevelop gives you a BY Example crash course on how exactly to do it properly. Having said that, I also have to say that I haven't found a way (yet) to neatly integrate my use of Vi as an editor in to Kdevelop. It has an IDE of it's own (editor), but it's in no way comparable to Vi. I would have assumed that there would have been a way to integrate Vi and Kdevelop smoothly and seamlessly together, but I haven't seen it yet. Presently I work in a transparent Eterm using Vi to edit the C source, then go to Kdevelop, reload the source (an annoying process), and then use the Kdevelop utils to generate the makefiles, object files, documentation, and binary(s). In fact, any advice from some Kdevelop wizard on using the ide in a way that automatically edits the sources using the programmer's favorite editor would be appreciated L8R LX -- °°° Kernel 2.4.8-26mdk Mandrake Linux 8.1 Enlightenment 0.16.5Evolution 1.02 Registered Linux User #268899 http://counter.li.org/ °°° _ Do You Yahoo!? [newbie] how to change language in LM82?
Hi all, I've just managed to upgrade my box from LM80 to LM82. While I was at it, I decided to tried the Chinese language. It is very impressive, but some text in dialog boxes are garbled up. Does anyone know how I can change the default language to English? I looked in Mandrake Control Center but didn't see anything relevant. Any help will be greatly appreciated!! [newbie] Changing defaults in a distribution rpm
Using Apache + PHP + PostgreSQL from the LM8.2 distribution, register_globals defaults to "on". After building my prototype db-driven website with globals on, I decided to switch to $_SESSION: I had to turn globals=off. I edited the php.ini file and changed register_globals to off. Unfortunately, by doing so, support for PostgreSQL has disappeared. I can build Apache + PHP + PostgreSQL from source, but I would rather use the package set up by LM8.2. Is there anyway of over-riding the default RPM configuration for PHP (as set up by Mandrake) so that the db was still be there? [I had spent hours trying to track down why I was getting an "undeclared function() while trying to connect to the database. When I looked in phpinfo() I noticed that support for PostgreSQL had "disappeared". It's obvious that the connection had been broken by editing the php.ini file.] Any help would be greatly appreciated. Tia, Andre -- Please pray the Holy Rosary to end the holocaust of abortion. One is the CD-R vs the DVD (CDRW is a much more likely source of errors) and the other is the Adaptec Card. Adaptec changed its firmware in a major way in March 2001 and if you haven't updated the firmware, you may have a problem with the current driver. A good test of this is to boot from CD2 and do the install with one of the 2.2 kernels using the older Adaptec driver. You could get more info likely from hitting ctrl-alt-f4 for kernel mesages and ctrl-alt-f3 for the install log play-by-play (ctrl-alt-f7 returns to the main install screen). SuSE is the only other distro worth using, it still falls short of Mandrake, but only just. because it is slightly behind Mandrake in my opinion and because of the damn installer (see below) i will not use, or pay for SuSE. save your money on SuSE, instead get Mandrake for the same cash, or become a club member and get 2 Mandrake versions. > If someone has Suse 7.3 and has a high speed connection setup an ftp and > let me download ISOs of the discs to see if i like it. Should i get professional or standard? SuSE does have a free install, you can make a floppy to do an install over the net. it is on thir site. it rarely (i got it to fully load once in 6 tries) works, but you can try it. and after all the pain in the download, when you find you have Mandrake without as nice of controls, and a less able hardware detection, we will be here. ;-) -- "Psychic Convention. [newbie] xfs config file
I suspect the problems I've been having with OpenOffice spadmin (hangs whenever I try to run it) are to do with changes I've made to my xfs config file. Is there a way to create a new standard config file (as per installation)? I've tried various drakfont options to no avail. Sir Robin Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? I also have a question regarding SuSe. It seem Red Hat is targetting corporate america, Mandrake is targetting newbies, Slackware is targetting the hardcore users. What is SuSe targetting? Or are they just trying to be an allround distribution. [newbie] Suse vs Mandrake
In October i started my exploration of Linux with Redhat wanting to try the major distrobutions in the span of a year to see which i liked the best. I have been running Mandrake for 3 months now and find it better than redhat. Suse is the last distro that i want to try before i go back to college next fall. Since it does cost money i would like to know that it is as good as Mandrake. I am going to buy Suse 8.0 when it comes out at the end of april. Is there any Suse 7.3 users out there that would try to convince me to use Suse instead of Mandrake. The reason i ask is because i know there is a few people on this list that use Suse. If someone has Suse 7.3 and has a high speed connection setup an ftp and let me download ISOs of the discs to see if i like it. I would feel more confident in paying for it which doesn't bother me if its a quality product (one reason why i never bought a copy of M$ windows, hehe) if i like it then i will but 8.0. Try this:- At the lilo splash screen ,hit Esc tab, and at the boot screen, type linux(or whatever it is listed as) nobiospnp When on desktop go to /etc/lilo.conf and edit the append=line by additng "nobiospnp" within the already established qyotes. Re: [newbie] Dual CPU Query
Thanks for your suggestions, but I haven't managed to get it working, yet. The second CPU is working - it is recognized at boot up, and Windows XP Pro recognizes that there are 2 CPUs. I have tried booting with the Mandrake smp kernel and get the same result as my own kernel; only one CPU is initialised. Since both CPUs work with XP, it leads me to believe that it is a Linux problem, not the motherboard or the BIOS. Amdrew Tuson. [newbie] Kernel panic: attempted to kill init!
Hi, All: I am pretty new with linux. Actually, this is my first time to install the Mandrake linux 8.1 (2 CD disks) to a desktop. The installation was very smooth. But after the installation and reboot, nothing happened and the screen was black! After re-login with the "failsafe" mode, the following error message showed up on the screen: . . EIP: 0068 [<8332>] . . Code: Bad EIP value <0> Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init! My computer has a 3D mainboard (PV40A series), a Pentium 4 CPU (1.6G), a NVIDIA TNT2 32M graphic accelerator card, a 512M memory and a 40G hard disk. A Window 98 operating system occupied first 5G hard disk in hda1, followed in the extended partition are the 517M swap partition (logical), 2.5G \ partition (logical) and 6G \home partition (logical). There is about 12G un-used hard disk space, then 6G window_D partition (logical) and 6G window_E partition (logical). I was able to start the linux using the Rescue mode from the CD, and found the whole system in the computer. But some boot_log were empty. After re-install the system several times and consulted some of my friends, the problem remained the same. I was completely out of my wits now. Mandrake linux has very friendly interfaces. I don't want to give it up so easily. Any suggestion on how to solve this problem is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help.
