[newbie] Optra LX+ Printer install
I have an Optra LX+ printer I am trying to hook up to either my network or the 8.2 box. Printerdrake does not list this printer, so I went to the Lexmark site and picked up DRIVERS-LINUX-GLIBC2-X86.RPM.TAR.GZ which contains lexmark-MVfonts-4.6-1.i386.rpm and lexmark-MVprint-4.6-1.i386.rpm. Before I go on blindly, as usual, does anyone have experience with this printer? Is there another, perhaps better, way to do this? It seems that usually when I depend on a program source other than Mandrake I run into problems due to not knowing what I'm doing. [newbie] System requirements?
Greetings... I've a relatively simple question, regarding system hardware requirements for ML 8.2 and a few things I intend to put it to use for, and thought I might save myself a few headaches by asking wiser and more experienced users than myself. The system I have installed to is a P3/800 based system, 256M SDRAM, running a PC100 buss, with a single 20 gig HD, token floppy drive and a CD ROM. What I hope to accomplish is move my services and users from my present Windows box, to the Linux box. I presently have http, with Perl, PHP, and MySQL, a FTP server, and a mail server that provide for the overall needs of my roughly 25 or so users. Things are connected by way of a bridged ADSL connection, purported to be 768K upstream. The server load is moderate, I'd say, with around 50K average requests, and around 2 gigs of bandwidth per day. The final goal is to meet the above requirements, along with acting as an Internet gateway for my present Windows box, and the family system. Overall, the main objective is to remove the servers from the Windows environment, and rely on Linux to handle those needs, while freeing my Windows box for my other pursuits, and providing better service for the users. For some things, Windows does pretty well, running servers isn't one of them, unless one is keen on rebooting at least daily. In the opinion of those more accustomed, is the hardware mentioned up to the task? The same system ran my present servers fairly well under Windows, but that's about all it was fit for, and the crashes weren't too awfully bad. I want to be able to build this box, install things, and be able to rely on it, not wind up having to upgrade the hardware because it wasn't up to the task required. Perhaps more memory? Faster buss? Any suggestions would be gratefully received. TIA, Belgarius --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Re: [newbie] Printing with Windows Fonts
Solved it myself: Just in case someone has similar problems here is the solution. It was OpenOffice itself that was the problem. It could display any Truetype font but could not print them correctly. I think my mistake was in using ./spadmin to import my TT fonts into OpenOffice before using drakfont to import the same fonts into the system. Reinstalling OO fixed it, and all the TT fonts known to drakfont were immediately available to OO without having to use ./spadmin Grrr I spent 8 hours tracking that one down, and it all started when I could not get kdeprintfax to send a fax Oh well, I've learned a lot about Ghostscript and X Font servers... derek On Monday 15 April 2002 3:18 pm, Derek Jennings wrote: > Has anyone had any success printing Documents with fonts imported from > Windows with 8.2? > > Here is my scenario :- > drakfont used to import fonts from Windows - No problem. I can't find anyway round this and want 8.2 on my laptop to keep it identical to my desktop PC. I have looked into setting "PnP OS" to NO in bios; but my BIOS does not have that option! BIOS is: ROM PCI/ISA BIOS (2A69NC2A) CMOS SETUP UTILITY AWARD SOFTWARE, INC. Laptop is: Chicony-MP995 Intel Celeron 333 64Mb RAM 6GB HD Thanks, Andy Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Kicker (the bottom toolbar) freezes up in my case. A workaround is to remove the shell icon from Kicker by dragging it to the desktop; starting the shell from anywhere other than Kicker appears to skip over the problem. (In any case, from a shell window you can do ps -aux | grep kicker kill -9 kdeinit kicker to start Kicker again). There are a few other bugs: - desktop icons occasionally disappear and reappear without warning; - some icons are missing in the K-menu (look under Configuration, in particular); - some minor applications don't work (notably kstars which gives a SIGSEGV after momentarily flashing up its window); - I'm always given the setup wizard on starting KDE3; - automatic monitor power-off no longer works. I'll do some more trying to fix the last two, but the first four appear to be unavoidable. However, they're not fatal and KDE3 is enormously impressive. KMail and Konqueror, in particular, have big improvements over KDE2.2.2. A good thing is to install the package "usbviev" so you can see first if its recognized cause then it should be loaded too by "hotplug" Note : You need a kernel with usb-storage enabled. As i sayd i didnt try this on my mandrake machine its the debian one so it might be a different procedure. Cheers Florian Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? On Monday 15 Apr 2002 3:10 pm, Brian Koppe wrote: > I remember hearins somewhere that Linux can sync up with Pam devices. > Anyone know if this can work with Mandrake 8.2 and a Sony Clie and Here's the full gruesome detail (for my T425; other devices are probably similar). It's a little tricky; compiler options have to be set when building pilot-link and the actual hotsync is not perfect. The steps are as follows: 1. From www.pilot-link.org download the archive: pilot-link-0.10.99.tar.gz 2. Detar it into its own folder: cd ~ tar zxvf pilot-link-0.10.99.tar.gz 3. Configure (note the compiler options, which are all one line): cd pilot-link-0.10.99 ./configure --prefix=/usr/etc/pilot-link --with-perl5=no --with-python=no 4. Make and install: make su make install exit 5. Add the directory in which the pilot-link packages are installed to your directory path by editing ~/.bash_profile and adding /usr/etc/pilot-link/bin: { my PATH was PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin and now looks like PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin:/usr/etc/pilot-link/bin } 6. Tell Linux this updated path exists: source ~/.bash_profile 7. At last everything is ready! You should be able to type commands like, for example, pilot-xfer -p /dev/usb/tts/1 -s ~/clie-backup which will back up the Clie to ~/clie-backup. (It may be possible that your setup thinks the Clie is on /dev/usb/tts/0 or some other USB port). 8. Using pilot-link is sometimes a little sticky on my PC as it waits indefinitely on the first hotsync after booting. I have to: a. enter the pilot-xfer (or whatever) command; b. press the button on the cradle; c. Linux waits indefinitely, so cancel out of the hotsync at both ends by pressing the Cancel button on the Clie screen and Ctrl-C on the keyboard; d. enter the command again and press the button - this time it works; e. repeat step d. for other commands; the indefinite wait is only on the first hotsync. Doubtless there's some way of working round steps a to c, but what I've got is good enough. Note that the command in d may have to be entered several times (up-arrow and return) because the Clie takes a little time to realise something's trying to communicate with it :) There's a useful mailing list and other information at: http://kreucher.net/clie/ Alastair -- Alastair Scott (London, United Kingdom) http://www.unmetered.org.uk/ Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to the line (close to the bottom) that says: "HALTARGS="-i -d -p" and make it: "HALTARGS="-i -d" Thats what I had to do on a Gigabyte MB I used to use... [newbie] Linux for Windows: lnx4win??
Hi, I downloaded the ISO files: Mandrake82-cd1-inst.i586, Mandrake82-cd2-ext.i586, and Mandrake82-cd3-supp.i586 and burned them to a CD. In the installation file, it's mentioned that you can install Linux to a Windows folder, so you don't need another partition. It's ideal for a try-out, but speed decreases. However, when I use the command lnx4win, nothing happens. The folder lnx4win is missing on the CD. Is this normal? Can I find an ISO-image that does contain this folder? thanx in advance, Dennis Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Re: [newbie] CDROM Files and tar command, Part 2
Ellen, Sounds like you have some basic problems with the setup of the CDROM - probably as a result of supermount. Here is an example of me mounting a CD with supermount switched off: [brian@daw brian]$ mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom mount: only root can do that [brian@daw brian]$ su Password: [root@daw brian]# mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom mount: block device /dev/cdrom is write-protected, mounting read-only [root@daw brian]# ls /mnt/cdrom autorun.inf dosutils/INSTALL.txt Mandrake/ tutorial/ Boot/images/ LICENSE-APPS.txt misc/ VERSION COPYING index.htmLICENSE.txt README.txt doc/ install.htm live_update* RPM-GPG-KEYS [root@daw brian]# umount /mnt/cdrom [root@daw brian]# eject /dev/cdrom Now, if you do this, where does it fail and what does it say? Maybe you can post a console session like the one above along with the output from the commands: ll /mnt ll /dev/cdrom It would also be useful to see the contents of your /etc/fstab and /etc/lilo.conf files. Sorry if that sounds like a lot, but armed with that info, we can certainly sort out your problem. To get the console text into an e-mail, just highlight the text in the console window, then click into the window in which you are writing your post and click the middle mouse button to paste the highlighted text. If you only have a two button mouse, clicking both buttons at once will do it. You provided very useful information! About MIDI, if you have the relevant packages installed, in KDE you have K -> multimedia -> sound -> midi synthesizer. You can play the file /usr/share/sndconfig/sample.midi, that's the one sndconfig didn't let you hear ;) There is also K -> multimedia -> sound -> midi and karaoke player. To use it click settings -> midi setup and choose Yamaha opl3 - FM to use the FM synthesizer to play midi (or choose the external MIDI port if you have an exteral synthesizer). I think the quality is much less than the first program which uses sofware for sound synthesis and not the onboard hardware FM synthesizer. > Cheers again > Matt > > > "cat /proc/isapnp" > > Card 1 'CSC4236:Crystal Codec' PnP version 1.0 Product version 0.5 The line above tells me what soundcard you have. > Logical device 0 'CSC:WSS/SB' > Device is not active That's why I think you hadn't (re)run sndconfig and had no working sound. > Active port 0x534,0x388,0x220 > Active IRQ 7 [0x2] > Active DMA 1,3 Ports, IRQ, DMA ... > >> Original Message << > > On 13/04/02, 16:12:24, Frans Ketelaars <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote > regarding Re: [newbie] Sound card problems: > > > > On Sat, 13 Apr 2002 12:24:38 GMT > > Matt Blake <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > > > Hi, I've just installed 8.2 but am generally new to Linux having only > > > used Redmond Linux before. Configure WP8 to print raw postscript; do not specify a specific printer 2. Install the xpp package and set WP8 to print to the 'xpp' command. If that doesn't work: 1. In WP8, print to a postscript file 2. Open this file in xpp and print it from there. -- Sridhar Dhanapalan "I wrote code that works. I didn't test it, but the discussion is closed. I sent a mail to my ISP with a copy of a mail just like you posted and they fixed it. To point them into the right direction you need to ask them to fix "host resolving".
