Re: [newbie] X and nVidia under 8.2

2002-04-28 Thread Brian Parish

Sure - send it on down. I'll try anything. I'm sure I rebooted at
least once during the cycle of try this - try that, but maybe not when
everything was supposedly in place. I'll play some more including a
reboot.

The error consists of words to the effect that the nvidia kernel module
failed to load. I was getting an error on the GLX part, but a
remove/reinstall fixed that.

thanks and regards

When you have it in your box (I believe it's going to
be an ATAPI thing) su to root from console and open
with vim or pico or vi (text editors) /etc/lilo.conf

write on the append line "devs=mount hdc=ide-scsi
quiet" save it close the text editor after saving the
changes and from console type /sbin/lilo. You're done.
Reboot. When your box is up again from console type
cdrecord -scanbus. You will see your recorde there
recognized under Linux.

If you have any further question don't hesitate the
list is here.

Re: [newbie] Re: KDE 3.0 - question on installation

2002-04-28 Thread Joseph Braddock

Assuming you are using KDM login shell, login with the default session. Hopefully,
that will open up either KDE or Gnome. Next go to the K or foot menu and go to
Configuration. Go to KDE, then System, the Login Manager. There should be a tab
called Sessions. At the bottom, there should be a section called Session Types.
Manually add Gnome and KDE back to the list. Capitalization is important so it must
be exactly "Gnome" and "KDE" (without the quotes of course).

Well, /home would already exist. Of course, that's assuming the directory

If nothing is mounted there, it's empty, of course. It doesn't create the
directory, because that's already been done.

Re: [newbie] kernel panic - why?

2002-04-28 Thread Brian Parish

Sounds like you have disk problems again. Try booting from the install
CD, press F1 and type RESCUE.

It will allow you to mount your files systems under /mnt. First
question then is: can you mount them? If so, try fsck. That should at
least give you more data to come back to the list.

Mike,

Sorry, what I said was poorly phrased. Actually, AFAIK, AbiWord cannot
export .doc, but exports .rtf. IIRC, users on the abiword lists
requested that the .rtf be given a .doc extension by default so that
Word can import what AbiWord exports.

It's a pretty technical distinction that won't make any difference in
most cases.

Actually 8.1 should pick it up as a CDRW once you put it in the box. Mandrake
is getting really good at that as evidenced by 8.2. Any way, once it is in,
try a console line "cdrecord -scanbus" and it should show you the recorder as

Hi Warren, to get some idea of temp and fan speeds (just to make sure they

Re: [newbie] Install CDRW on M 8.1 ?

2002-04-28 Thread Jim Adams

No specific drivers are necessary. If it is an IDE drive you will have to
enable SCSI emulation if you want to use its burning capabilities. The
documentation that comes w/XCDROAST is excellent. Being more of a SuSE user I
don't know whether or not KUDZU would set up the proper settings. Just my
2cents worth.

A Linksys AFAIK will discard packets though if you tell it to.

At least thats what I remember readin froma friends post on a Forum.
New firmware apparently though your router may not support it, its
wortha shot looking into firmware upgrades.

Re: [newbie] Cannot install 8.2 - strange !

2002-04-28 Thread Brian Parish

For K6s and Pentium 1s. I have an old Pentium 200 that I'm
commissioning as a small server/firewall. Too slow for the desktop, but
perfect for that.

BTW, I had previously discarded the idea of using this machine because
the bios wouldn't support a disk larger than 8GB and there are no
updates available, but plug in a $35 PCI IDE controller and you have a
machine that can handle 130GB plus drives at ATA100. Not bad to turn
what was otherwise a box too slow for anything useful into a server
suitable for a small LAN.

As for the pun - a big no comment :-)

Precisely why is this a problem? What other session type would you

I also have "Boot from Floppy". Not much difference.

If not, try that. If that fails... I suspect your card may have to use
the 3.3.6 driver that is an option. I seem to remember that card having

I'd gather you've got an IRQ conflict judging by the bit about the IRQs
found & what its trying to share. Its trying to share a serial IRQ (com
1) & Com 2 (another serial IRQ). Do you have anything on those serial
ports?

Other than that I am kinda wondering myself whats wrong.

I don't know what you mean by that, but here goes

su
cd /home
tar -cvf * home.tar # the -v option is not necessary, but I find it
reassuring to see all those file names!
gzip home.tar #actually, you can do these as one command, I think, but I
always prefer the long way
mv home.tar.gz /mnt/win_d # or whatever your D: drive is called

after install ...
mv /mnt/win_d/home.tar.gz /home
tar -zxvf home.tar.gz

Create a user for each home directory, then (as root, of course) for each
directory

chown -R fred /home/fred # or whoever
chgrp -R fred /home/fred

If you have a lot of users, it would be better to do this as a shell script

Perhaps the CPU is running hot? My motherboard can be monitored for temperature and

[newbie] Mandrake 8.2 / Gnome-terminal / Background changes on the fly

2002-04-28 Thread T.

Hi,

Everyone seems to be telling me this isn't possible, I thought I might
try here as a last ditch effort.

I'm running mandrake 8.2 and using gnome-terminal for a shell.

I want to be able to ssh into remote-pc#1 and have .bashrc on that
remote system configure my background color of gnome-terminal.

Likewise, if I ssh into remote-pc#2, have .bashrc set my background
color to something different.

Or even, when I login as fred in my local system my background color
will be red, but when I su'd into root - it'd change to blue.

I am not looking for the gnome-terminal --background=red option. I want
to configure the shell I am already in, via a command line, not open a
new shell.

regards,
T.

as root, cd /
tar -cWvf home.tar home/ && gzip -v home.tar && gzip -vt home.tar.gz

All three commands provide verification.

Alternatively you could do a bzme home.tar.gz as well, which will
compress to a .bz2 saving (most of the time) some more space yet.

Not to get too technical, but AbiWord will actually export in rtf

[newbie] tar/zip then untar/unzip (in detail though )

2002-04-28 Thread Hanan Shargi

Hi,

Hi All,

On my machine that dual boots Linux 8.1 and Win89 ( which I have no CD burner
on )
I need to do the following:

1- tar and zip my /home folder and save it on the D: partition ( a win fat32
partition )

2- I'll split the partition I have linux on right now into two partitions: /
and /home

3- I'll do a fresh install

4- then I want to restore the /home I just saved on the win partition to the
new /home I just created.

I need somebody to tell me what are the commands I need to run for the taring
and zipping, and then untarring and unzipping into the new /home directory :)

( in details please, but not with the regular: do a "command -x option"
without the quots thing )

And If everything went fine, will my mail that I saved in a folder under KDE be
saved as well ? or no ?

thanks for your patience :)

recognize it? the drive should be recognized automatically.
however, in order to get it to burn, you will have to add
scsi emulation for it. it's quite simple, it /etc/lilo.conf
you have to look for a line that reads

append="devfs-nomount"

or something like it. you have to add the parameter "hd*=ide-scsi" ( replace
the * with the letter your computer will assign to the drive.
now it should look like this, for example:

append="devfs-nomount hdd=ide-scsi"

until you do this, your drive will work only as a regular CD-ROM

erps... sorry to say.. you can do it with kde 2's kmail

I have the same setup... gotta check pop, before I can send mail...

you can find the setting:
settings-->configure kmail-->miscellaneous-->folders
and check the option: send mail in outbox folder on check

this will send mail to mail server immediattly after a pop check

Hi Y'all,

I've been able to mount them read-only and copy data from them to other
media. The command and output I get is as follows:

[root@graham graham]# mount -t udf /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom2
mount: block device /dev/scd0 is write-protected, mounting read-only

The device and mount point may be different on your system. You will

probably need to be root to do this.

Having done this, you can access this as you would any other cdr.

Not a stupid question - it appears to be a fairly elementary omission
from LM :)

Things are halfway there - the kernel (8.2) appears to be set up but you
need command-line tools to format CDRWs and set up the appropriate
device. Download and install udftools-1.0.0b2.tar.gz from:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/linux-udf

After a lot of fiddling with parameters I've got it to recognise the
drive and format CDRWs (via cdrwtool) but reading and writing files
(via pktsetup) ... not yet.

i think most other mail clients do. this has been a short coming for kmail
for awhile but the newest version in KDE 3 solves it, so try just about any
other linux mail program or try KDE 3.

i doubt (but don't know) that you can get the new kmail without a full KDE

Thanks for your reply Paul. I had solved the problem by rebooting, but I
guess it would have been better to just kill the process. I now remember
playing around a bit with InteractiveBastille some time ago. I thought
closing the Konsole window ended the program, but I guess not. Anyway,

Kaj,

Having just done this one myself and feeling very proud to have found
the solution in the errata without Femme having to tell me first, I can
assure you that geekiness is not a requirement. Just download the patch
from:

http://www.linux-mandrake.com/patches/8.2/k6/patch.pl

copy it to a DOS floppy, press F1 at the start of the install, type
"patch" with the floppy in the drive and it all works.

No beers required, but one wouldn't hurt!

cheers

There is currently no DRI driver for the
Savages for XFree86 4.x, which means that OpenGL applications are entirely simulated
in software. There was work going on at one time to add this support, by the same
fellow who did the UtahGLX driver for XFree86 3.3.6, but his e-mail address no longer
responds.

You can install the mesa and libMesa rpms this should allow you to at least start the
games but I am afraid they will be so slow and jerky that they will not be playable.

Any chance that you might could switch vid cards between the 2 systems.

And to add one more slight thing. I read somewhere that in Linux everything
is a file. Thus /home is a file of type directory in the root directory
whether it be a partition or not.

2 B or not 2 B
a partition or directory

Yeah its lame... I is warped sometimes

Damn, that lot made my head spin... I will read it again in the morning.

I thought that during initializing if a partition didn't exist (i.e.
/home), it creates it as a directory. If it does exist, it gets treated
like a directory. If a partition fits inside a directory (i.e. /home/http)
it creates the directory /home and just points the pointer for /http to the
partition.

[newbie] Problems with Savage4 Graphic_Tuxracer doesn't load!!

2002-04-28 Thread Dimitris Ioannou

Hello list

I keep having problems with my second PC running LM 8.2 as well as my first
one. It has a Savage 4 16MB graphical adapter and refuses to start Tuxracer
and Chromium games which happens to be my two sons favorites. So I'm forced
to let them play on my PC while I can't work myself there. Whenever I try to
start each of the games mentioned I get the following message:

Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0"
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0"
*** tuxracer error: Couldn't initialize video: Couldn't find matching GLX

Any hints?

[newbie] Mandrake 8.2 install problems

2002-04-28 Thread Anders Drejer

Hello

I just bought a new computer and Mandrake 8.2 - but I am not able to
install Mandrake! The install is locked during what looks like a check
of the devices in the computer. The last line written is:

"Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 01:03"

I have tried to start the installation on my sons old PC, and there
seems to be no problems, so it is related to my PC.

The computer has a M810LS motherboard (www.pcchips.com.tw).

Curiously, I have almost the same problem with my Lexmark Z42 and a new
install (only red and black print; no blue or yellow). This is using
CUPS.

I can't find anything specific on Google (put 'mandrake color print
problem' in groups.google.com) although there seems to be every other
printing problem imaginable there.

Will keep trying ...

[newbie] kernel panic - why?

2002-04-28 Thread hjfmc

Hi newbies & non-newbies (may your tribe increase)
Well, this is the second time (original install November 2001 - panic Jan
2001), So ... It may have been 'cos the 12yo exceeded his winME
partition size (around 10goig), or the (apparently) faulty power source ...
anyway, the hd was unable to be formatted or partitioned (needed 3
days & $299 to be fixed) , so was factory formatted ... and new power
supply, and the hd worked.
Yay!
Reinstalled Feb 21 2002, another kernel panic 28 April 2002. remember
we have a new power supply and this time ample (over 2 gigs) left on
WinME partition, so why did I get a "kernel panic: unable to mount root
fs on 03:05" this time? Is it *time* related ... can't be space or power
supply related ... can it?
The system (dual boot M8.0 and WinME, has been fine, until this)
Pentium III 866, 256 RAM, 20 gig hd, LILO, KDE, non-graphical login,
nvidia card (tnt2 riva), external dynalink rural modem ... sheesh is that
enough? - Oh, it is the powerpack, but registered in Jan or Dec so can't
do the expert thingy..
Help ... please, I want to go to Linux only (yes, I'll do the Transgaming
thing and the CodeWeavers, and TurboPrint thing (printer is Epson
480) ... I'm lacking in $ but prepared to pay for service .. despite being
in NZ - where USD mean big bucks), and my 12yo is prepared to
sacrifice some short term goodies for longevity.

Cheers and TIA and I'll remember your help UTDSFOATCCSK (Until

I tried to install the kdetoys-2.2.2-8mdk.i586.rpm using urpmi it would not
get installed. urpmi just gave the error message that an error occurred
without any explanation. I then used rpm to install it. This time the
installation was successful. I checked the installed packages using "Software
Manager" and the extraneous packages did not show up.

It looks like the problem is solved. No compilation was necessary.

Thanx to everyone.

2002-04-28 Thread Michael Viron

Don't worry fellow list members, I've not gone missing

I recently managed (finally) to get some time to start using towards
updating / revising my FAQ site (some of it posts to the Redhat lists, some
of it on the Mandrake lists).

For quite a while now (until recently), I've been without a Mandrake box to
actually use to assist in answering questions, since the linux box I was
handling administration for has departed.

Anyways, since my parents purchased a new dell PC, I now (finally) have my
own linux workstation / server, where I can actually take a look /
investigate problems again.

My latest project is to try to get a linux server installed at work to
handle centralized user authentication, and possibly to replace the
existing firewall. I've probably convinced my supervisors 99%+ to do it -
just a matter now of locating hardware to run it on.

The primary reason that I've not been regularly posting to the list is
because I've been very busy since I am now working 3 jobs. One is
full-time as an IT Manager (ending my 11 month job search), another is
part-time somewhere else for benefits (small companies tend not to have
heavy benefits packages), and of course, various consulting gigs that I'm
trying to finish from before I got hired on.

Of course, this doesn't include my "after-hours" work on stuff like General
Education Online (http://www.findaschool.org), the Pensacola Linux Users
Group, Academic Web Information Repository (http://www.webspinners.org),
Simple End User Linux (http://www.seul.org), and various other projects.

Anyways, in the coming days, you'll start seeing posts from me again as I
can manage.

[newbie] Re: KDE 3.0 - question on installation

2002-04-28 Thread Eric Estes -=RCN Mail=-

Question regarding install of KDE 3.0 on Mandrake 8.2

I followed your instructions of:

cd /home/"MyName"/kde3
urpmi.addmedia kde3 file:///home/"MyName"/kde3

And I logout and when I get to the login screen I only have 2 options in
my Session Type drop down box. The first option is "default" and the
second option is "failsafe". I should have Gnome in here as well as the
other window makers since I have them installed.

Another question while I'm at it. When I start up Mandrake 8.2 it never
asks me what user I want to login and automatically logs me in. I would
rather be prompted as to which user I want to login with. I used to know
how to do this but I don't remember.

Thanks for your time,
Eric

It's strangely similar to my desktop :)

(the font is Frutiger Linotype; you get it installed with Microsoft
Reader www.eu.microsoft.com/reader).

This is a 'known bug' and the fix is near the bottom of this excellent
guide to KDE3 quirks:

http://mandrakeforum.com/article.php?sid=2048

"Create or edit the file '~/.kde3/share/config/kpersonalizerrc'. Put
this line into it:

FirstLogin=false"
