I like that signature! Anyhow, you can interface to MySQL using Apache and a a PHP webpage, as far as I know. I didn't get much into it, but I am pretty sure you can. PHP is worth learning too. IMHO. Re: [newbie] Star Office 6 Adabas question
Yeah, you need to add a new data source, then add a new table, then add a link to a document to edit... It works nearly the same as in 5.2. There must be some tutorial online somewhere. And by the way, AdabasD's file format sucks, IMHO. I just use dBase. It's simple and has no limitations. Star Office 5.2 apparently came with a GUI database editor for Adabas. SO 6.0 does not seem to have one! I have used Microsoft Access since their version 1.0 for relational database creation and management. Created several business specific databases with it. The database editor in Star Office 5.2 is very much like Microsoft Access and was easy for me to use and figure out. I rely heavily on the GUI at this point with Linux. The cable connection I set up for a client required a login process to kick things off and then re-login whenever the heartbeat timed out. To make this work from multiple clients on the LAN side, I needed to run squid on the linux machine I was using as a gateway and have the client machines connect via that proxy. This makes the cable network see a single client, although there are multiple users behind it. Could the way you are running it be either - bypassing the login/keep-alive process so that when the connection times out it doesn't get re-made, or - result in the the linux machine being seen as a second user - without a valid login. I remember one guy on this list who I helped to get his cable running, who would start the connection from his W$ machine, then fire up linux and have the connection survive for a few minutes then die. That was because of this login issue. As I said, may not be relevant to your case. Good luck Brian Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
Re: [newbie] How to set up Apache to host personal web page
I don't know of any, and didn't want to use it either. I enjoy learning new languages. There's a PDF online that I used to lookup the commands. A converter would probably be easily done, since just about every command in ASP has an equivalent in PHP. Hmm. I went through an exercise recently (I get a big pile of news nere). syslog and fetchnews (mainly due to that) tend to write fairly *large* files when slogging down a big newsfeed. I originally had /var on its own rather small partition (maybe 500 megs). It turned out that well -- 500 megs wasn't nearly enough to use for /var, and 1.6 gigs (/var/spool, on a separate older drive) was too small to use for news. So I moved things around, got rid of /opt (didn't really need it anyway), and used the extra disk space. Plus I gave /var/spool its own slice of disk real estate - 5 gigs (used to have /opt there) and turned the whole 1.6 gig drive over to /var, just becauase of those really big logs. There were several times when I had to do my own rotating - which isn't all that difficult. You need to 'service stop syslog' to turn the syslog service off (as root, btw) and also go into the /var/log and gzip the rather large file. At the same time, you can move the old log files out of the way. That's basically what the syslog script does. For instance: cd /var/log rm -f biglog.5.gz mv biglog.4.gz biglog.5.gz mv biglog.3.gz biglog.4.gz mv biglog.2.gz biglog.3.gz mv biglog.1.gz biglog.2.gz gzip biglog mv biglog.gz biglog.1.gz touch biglog Then restart ('service syslog start') your syslog, and the space is given back. And you don't have to blindly remove stuff in /var/log - that approach may cause you to lose some log data that you will need. Oh, and I've experienced times where there wasn't enough space on the disk to hold the gzipped copy - so in that event, I would cp the log files to /tmp, gzip them there and then mv out of /tmp to /var/log. :) > What can I do to prevent this? tips? I don't really like the idea of > setting up a cron job to daily delete it! :) That would be counterproductive - why delete logs that you just created that day? And the other suggestions - they too have merit. You might have to make /var bigger, or symlink /var/log to /home. I don't particularly like the latter, since it means that if you backup /home you get log files in the backup too. What you probably should do first is to try and narrow down what it is that's creating such a big log file. Use 'tail' on it periodically to find ouit what kinds of things it's writing there. Re: [newbie] music.raw

I don't know an app offhand that uses that as a default filename. Try running 'file' on it - that can tell you what kind of data is stored there. Try even 'play' on it - if it sounds funny, 'rm' it and use the space for something else :). > Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

[newbie] kde3.0.1 and kdm
I decided to install the first set of kde 3.0.1 rpms onto LM8.2 (the ones that install into /usr). After uninstalling the previous 3.0 rpms (that install into /opt) and the 2.2.2 rpms, I discovered that kdm was broken and the system now defaults to gdm as the login manager. /usr/bin/kdm is still installed on the system. It is my impression that kde3.0.1 launched from gdm is noticibly slower than 3.0 launched from gdm. Has anyone else noticed this? Any ideas how to reactivate kdm? Oh yeah, and I forgot about this: By default, my users all have webpages too. In their ~/public_html/ directories. To access this, someone would go to http://my.ip.addy.here/~username/ and their webpage will load. If that isn't enabled for you, you can enable it in Webmin or the Apache config. [newbie] Change DSP on Mandrake8.2/RH 5.2 dual boot?
Recently, in a campaign resembling Hitler's assault on Stalingrad, I setup up a PIII 450 dell with a 2 HD, dual boot, Linux situation. Mandrake 8.2 to handle all the modern networking, cdburning etc functions and RH 5.2 to run a deadended legacy software app. (Entropics Waves). After much work, swapping of video cards etc., I got everything to work together until I tried to use Entropics on the RH5.2 boot to play a sound file whereby everything forwith locked up tight ... frozen solid. (I had to hardboot to recover). I am assuming RH 5.2 thinks the Soundblaster PCI 128 sound cards comes from Mars and wants something it knows about. So I have dug up a Sound Blaster 16 Value PnP OEM Model #CT2940 which I think it might like and I'm sure Mandrake can live with. My question is two part: 1) Does my analysis make sense ... that RH5.2 is not going to live with the Soundblaster PCI 128? (or am i just missing an important setup/install bit?) 2) Configuration-wise, what do I have to do to swap sound cards now that both OS's and apps are fully installed? I'm guessing that Mandrake with automatically recognize the new card and reconfigure but am pretty sure RH5.2 won't. Can anyone tell me what I have to do? (Note: Although I am computer savvy, I am a linux newbie so please don't assume I know anything at all.) Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

My site: www.barrymichels.com is running under Apache. I found it very easy to setup. Just install and put all your html docs in /var/www/html. Not much to it. IIRC, it took about a half-hour to get up & running. Then another 4 hours to translate all my ASP code into PHP. If the OS installs it during setup (like my current installation), then it's even easier since all you do is place your files in the published directory. Install Apache. That's about it... That's all I did, and it works. The URL will be your IP. To test if it's working OK, go to http://127.0.0.1 and see if you get the default "Welcome to Apache" or whatever the page says. Your web root is /var/www/html. If you don't get the welcome page, check out the conf files /etc/httpd/conf/commonhttpd.conf and /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf. IIRC, I only had to change a line or two in commonhttpd.conf, and it's well commented. The documentation for Apache is really quite good. [newbie] pcmcia troubles
Hi, Let it be said up front: I'm a total beginner, so maybe some of my queries are obvious or don't make much sense. Anyway, I hope someone can help: I'm running Mandrake 8.0 (kernel version 2.4.3-20mdk) on a Toshiba Satellite notebook. I'm trying to connect to the internet with an ethernet card and have troubles to configure the hardware and network connections. i'm using a Linksys Etherfast 10/100 PC Cardd PCMPC100 ver.3. The appropriate driver should be 'tulip'. Harddrake detects the pcmcia card as unknown device. The tulip driver is not available on the list of drivers to be selected in Mandrake Control Center;s network configuration tool. When booting I get the following message from the cardmgr: executing; 'modprobe pcnet_cs' insmod: /lib/modules/2.4.3-20mdk/kernel/driver/net/tulip/tulip.o: init_module: No such device It also hints that the IO and IRQ parameters may be wrong (whatever that is). I've read through the appropriate parts of the user guide and pcmcia HOWTO's, but can't make much sense of it. However, here is some additional information/verification I found when digging around: Any Linksys card listed in etc/pcmcia/conf binds pcnet_cs, which is available in the /lib/modules/kernel directory. It may be irrelevant but in the kernel/2.4.3-mdk directory blinks a 'build'. Not a clue what that means... Thanks a lot, Matthias

can't you just edit the cron logrotate setup to roll it over daily instead of weekly?? thats what I did with one of my 7.2 boxs that was hosting blocks of IP's and was filling fast.. worked great.. was awhile ago, but if I remember.. I went into /etc/logrotate.d/syslog and changed weekly to daily (think thats what I did, don't quote me, go and look :-) hope that helps.. oh, and buy another harddrive :-).. Do you mean, that windows saves "patch.pl" as "patch.txt" ? - In that case it's no wonder everything goes awry. I can only think of one way that could happen : if you use M$-file-explorer (I'm not sure of the name) to drag'n drop the file from the harddisk to the floppy. As far as I remember, this explorer-thingy doesn't show file-extensions, but nevertheless I doubt that even a M$-app could behave that stupid. No, I think the problem is that the first time you tried to install 8.2 you created a file-system on your HD. Then you reached the "select-packages" part and everything stopped. Now, when you try another install, this time with the patch in place, the installer finds an "alien" partition-table and panics. May I recommend : Do an "expert" install, and choose to delete all partitions except the windows-ones. Then, create linux-partitions once again to your liking. Remember to have the floppy in place. If still in trouble, repost to this list, I'm sure there are people here to help you through this. I'm sure it's only some minor issue. Re: [newbie] Divx movies -- yes or no?!
Yeah, I make my own RPM's for personal use, however I suggest you download the tarball and work on it from there. You should upgrade your GCC though, and I suggest to the gcc 3.0.4 which is on your Mandrake 8.2 CD's. The standard GCC is messed up I'm afraid, and although compiling everything (well almost) else causes no problems, 0.9.6 has quite a gew mmx / mxx / whatever... can't remember .. problems ;-) If I remember correctly I had to symlink /usr/bin/cc to /usr/bin/gcc afterwards, but if you are going to upgrade GCC, delete totally gcc-0.9.6 first, including the devel file. You can bypass this by using the --disable-gcc-checking, however if you want to use Mencoder properly with DivX, upgrade. I had the same problems with Lame (for MP3 audio in the films). At first it's a drag to do it all, but once you have it working you will realise why MPlayer stands at Number 1 on the Popular statistics on Freshmeat... even above the Linux Kernel ;-) If you run into big problems, first reffer to the documentation included in the tarball, and whatever you do, do NOT ask "stupid" questions on the MPlayer Mailing list... they have this great way of flaming people to a crisp ;-) I guess I can understand it to a point, as many questions get asked so many times though... and they do get tired answering the same questions over and over and over and over and over again... so maybe that's why their standard answer has become "RTFM". Everything as I said is well documented, however if you descide not to replace GCC 0.9.6 with a later or earlier version, then don't even bother asking questions on their site =) Good luck and reading ;-) Greetings Ralph On Tue, 4 Jun 2002, John Richard Smith wrote: > On Tuesday 04 June 2002 06:13, you wrote: > > > > > I found a small DivX trailer file to download and got it to work > > > with the linux DivX movie player. [newbie] Star Office 6 Adabas question
Currently I'm using Mandrake 8.2 with Star Office 6 and Adabas installed for database. I previously used Star Office 5.2 with Adabas and had set up several small relational databases for home and business use. I had no problems. With SO 6, I can't figure out how to even launch Adabas After installing the Adabas package from the PowerPack Edition cd's, it automagically set up a link in my menu under "Office Accessories" titled "Adabas Installation". I launched that, Adabas went through it's setup. It created an Adabas sub directory in my home directory (just like it should), there were no errors noted during the installation. The problem is that I can NOT find an executable file anywhere on my system to launch the Adabas GUI! In SO5.2 Adabas would launch from inside the Star Office menus. I checked to be sure Adabas was installed using the Software Manager and it shows as installed. If anyone knows what executable I need to launch to get Adabas running, please let me know. Many thanks in advance for your help. Mike Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

I wonder if CDs meet the DOT requirements. Bicycle reflectors. They are metal coated if you can solder to them they have a lot of potential for ham radio antennas. Any hams out there? A real die hard ham will try to turn almost anything into a antenna. I guess as long as we are on that subject you could bond enough of them togather to form the reflector for a satalite dish. [newbie] Konqueror / NT downloads
Sometimes konqueror is a pain in the arse, and I wish LM8.2 still had netscape as standard install. I have a download setup using NT which has a standard download directory : /mnt/ext2-vol6/downloads2, which is a spare partitinion ext2-vol6, where a main directory downloads2 resides. Everything you are downloading automatically ends upt there by default. The problem is that sometimes you drag a url file link to NT where it downloads as per instructed, only afterwards you find out that the url file address was nothing of the sort, it was merely a link to another website address where the true file link resided. The end result is that directory downloads2 is a website window with no sign of the downloaded files to be seen, when you click on downloads2. The wesite window is the only thing available. I never had anything like this problem with netscape, but that is by the side, I want to get my download files back. They must be there somewhere surely the website window has not overwritten them entirely. So my problem is how do you stop this characteristic happening, and how do I get my downloaded files back. I guess I must seem to be "Mr Problem A Day - just installed mandrake" chap... but here goes. I installed an epson stylus color 680 usb printer on mandrake 8.2 using CUPS and all seemed to go well. Also.. it doesn't seem to always print straight away.. sometimes when not printing at all I run printerdrake as root just to try and give cups a kick up the backside to get working.. and that seems to do the trick... Re: [newbie] 8.2 Powerpack install problems
I really can't speak about the powerpack (exactly) since I have the Prosuite DVD+8 CDs, however I did notice that when I searched for "kpackage" in software mangler, it did not show it as installed or in the list of sources, however when right mouse click on an RPM, it is one of the menu choices. (as I remember this thread was started about Kpackage). I also noticed that I had to search and add some other programs that are normally installed (eyecandy and games mainly) when you select everything possible from the "expert" + select packages indivudly. I also missed ViaVoice, so I went back to my 7.2 powerpack (CD3 I think) added them to the sources in package mangler, and installed. had to install blackdown JRE, also.. but ViaVoice works great. Re: [newbie] Access to win partitions
Hi, Perhaps it is mounted without write permission. To check that type mount and check if it says 'rw' in the line corresponding to the windows partition. If that is the problem, you can fix it as follows: umount mount +w If this helps, you can modify the /etc/fstab file for this to happen automatically. See man mount and man fstab for details. Another possibility is that the windows partitions is of type ntfs. In that case, you can't write there, but I guess it's not it, since you say you had write permission before. [newbie] Access to win partitions
I posted yesterday about changing access rights to my windows partitions but i'm not sure it came up as i never actually received it! anyway, since reinstalling 8.2 i cannot get write permissions to my windows hard drives where basically all my documents that i need are stored etc. The 1st time i installed 8.2 i didn't have to do anything to get both read/write access to my windows drives so i can't work out how to get it now. I tried changing permissions using chmod a+w win_c but that doesn't give me write permissions, so either something is up or i'm using the wrong commands - probably the latter!! Can anyone help me as this is a real pain as i've just got most things working in Linux and was about to change Linux to my default o/s. However, i've notice a little performance decrease when i use the RPM version. compiling the source in your own machine gives the program better speed. RE: [newbie] Few problems
no pros.. glad to help.. to your other question.. services you can quit.. are you runnign a web server? if not then stop httpd. you should keep xfs (fontserver for X), syslog, harddrake , gpm (mouse), crond, cups (if you print) xinet (if you have added services to it, if not, disable it.), portmap, random and depending on your sound setup. you might need to keep also and or sound... use the control panel in mandrake to look at the descriptions of the others and decide if you want need them. It depends on what you use your box for,, are you providing any net services? remote admin? rgds Frank -Original Message- From: Vahur Lokk [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, 4 June 2002 7:09 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [newbie] Few problems On Tuesday 04 June 2002 08:27, Franki wrote: > if you close MandrakeUpdate and open it again, the updated software > disapears from the list of required updates.. I never swap WM during the session, though the option seems to be present in Gnome and some smaller WMs (don't find it in KDE). The only place I pick WM is a login window. What I meant is - crash has reasons. There is probably some info logged somewhere that would help me nail down those reasons. Question is where it is, what should I know before reading it and what should I do to access it. OK if we are to services business, one more question. I have currently running alsa, anacron, crond, cups, draxtools_http, gpm, harddrake, httpd, hylafax, internet, ipvsadm, keytable, kheader, kudzu, linuxconf, mysql, netfs, network, nfslock, numlock, portmap, random, sound, syslog, xfs and xinet. Altogether 26 services. Some of them I know and are needed (like cups or mysql, hylafax or alsa) but most are strange. Suggestions about which ones could be stopped without harm? Hi, Did you check that LD_LIBRARY_PATH contains /usr/local/lib ? [newbie] compilation problem
Hello, I'm trying to install ImageMagick 5.4.6 on Linux Mandrake 8.0. Everything went ok during the compilation. However, when I try to launch display I get the following message: display: error while loading shared libraries: libMagick.so.5: cannot load shared object file: No such file or directory When I try to locate this library I find it in: /usr/local/lib/libMagick.so.5 What can I do ? Now this is no good you are saying? If so which particular version would be better and does it have to be tar ball versions, are there no rpm 's that are just as good ? Also, thank you all for your replies , there is certainly something to follow up here. thanks. John -- John Richard Smith [EMAIL PROTECTED] Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
