Some of the GUI functions do seem to be dead, but on the other hand there seems to be much better integration with the onboard DVD menus in ogle rather than in xine. For instance, the subtitles/hard of hearing option always works in ogle but is almost impossible to activate in xine. Len Lawrence Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Can't dupe any CD's. ;-(
just in case you need it, you can make a .iso image to HD and burn from there. it's more likely to go well this way. to make an iso image of a cd, put it in your cdrom and : dd if=(whatever your reader device is) of=(isofile output) like this: dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/home/user/diskimage.iso then use xcdroast and burn that image... > Have you used Mandrake update recently? > There are updates for xcdroast and cdrecord > > http://mandrakeforum.com/article.php?sid=2094&lang=en > > derek > > > > On Wednesday 05 June 2002 9:38 pm, darklord wrote: > > Anyone else having trouble duping CD's under 8.2? Nope it doesn't; but I can think of a couple ways that might make it work since Mozilla 0.9.8 is still here. One would be complex and time consuming, the other a down 'n' dirty cheat. But since I don't use Galeon it doesn't feel worth the trouble. I never use Gnome at all anyway, just some of the apps. There will probably be an update for Galeon in a short time anyway so it's definitely not worth it. [newbie] I like this "Mozilla1!"
Now if they would just get the blasted spelling checker (spell checker seems as though it should be something a warlock would need ;-)) working. You can download it from one of the mirrors: http://www.mozilla.org/mirrors.html or from one of the download links at http://www.mozilla.org/ but some of the mirrors haven't updated yet. If they have, they don't seem to be overwhelmed yet. For 8.2 users: I don't know if this will help you or not but it's the way I did it and it all "Just works!" Download the tar.gz file to an empty directory. I use a "src" directory I made in my home directory for all downloads, and I keep it empty between installs. Extract it using whatever method you prefer (right click, extract to using archiver in my case) to the same directory and allow it to build the mozilla-installer directory to extract to. Open a terminal, change to super user (type su then type the root password when prompted) then cd to the "mozilla-installer" directory that you just made. Type "./mozilla-installer" leaving out the quotes when you are in the proper directory. You'll have to do some accepting and choosing; I chose "custom install" and left off the talkback link (feedback agent or whatever they called it). I also changed the install directory to /usr/lib and called it mozilla1 (temporarily, you'll see why in a minute) and allowed it to build mozilla1 directory and install there. After installation I closed the browser window that it opens, closed the terminal, used (we're doing a GUI install here) "FileManager Super User Mode" went to /usr/lib and renamed the existing mozilla directory to 'mozillaold'. I then renamed mozilla1 to mozilla. Open the old mozilla directory, copy your plug-ins except the default plug-in and paste them into the new mozilla directory. Close the file manager and start mozilla from your normal link or the altF2>mozilla method and you should be ready to rock. If it does happen to break just revert to the old Mozilla by punting the new mozilla directory and renaming the mozillold back to mozilla. I don't think it will though. If you're wondering why I've said so many obvious things here; it's because a friend of mine has just started using Mandrake 8.2, and I want her to get used to at least "lurking on the list" so she'll be comfortable enough to ask questions. She asked me how to do this, and I figured it may help someone else too. You can enter individual ports separated by commas and groups of consecutive ports by colons, but be careful to keep it on one line. Now with all that said, I DID see an opportunity to open local ports in the interactive dialogue while I was running it to set this up. Tiny Firewall does not give you that opportunity and is useful perhaps only for computers which do no NAT and do not offer any files by SAMBA or nfs or appletalk. Second, if you actually did an upgrade from 7.2 rather than a fresh install, you are very lucky anything is working 0) It isn't supported and wasn't tested 1) rpm is different 2) glibc is different 3) gcc is different and your gcc link probably points at nothing at the monent 4) cups and the whole printing system have undergone a number of major overhauls. Now there is ONE rpm which offers a tarball instead of 4 that used to offer the SAME tarball. PDQ and LPRng are both available through printerdrake, which is itself accessible through the Mandrake Control Center. BAck up your data and do a fresh install, not an upgrade, then make sure during install that you are connected to the internet and update all the printer packages before completing install. I'm guessing but it would seem that your choice of install seems to fail to enable decss encription. As I'm unfamiliar with your choice it is difficult to say what may be the reason. I can only say that when you first tried to install the main xine rpm , it failed because of dependenties, it usually does, but it is a question as to whether you have the right dependencies and whether indeed it can work with decss encription file at all. I had the same problems, and that is why I chose the abovementioned Redhat package as it included as part of it's own install the correct decss encription file.I was built in . Mine seem to work flawlessly. So I guess from the above message that there is still a piece of libpng left installed that is in conflict with this package. I know that when I went down the same path as you I had all sorts of versions to try out before I hit on one that worked. It is often difficult to tellwhether in fact everything is cleared out on uninstall. I don't suppose you have been installing tar ball version by any chance. they don't remove easily unless you installed it with checkinstall programme command. I can see that you have libdvdcss2 which suggests an encription package, but is it the right one. It looks as though xine0-0.9.10-1 is your main xine package, does the installer mention which decss package it is dependent upon. You see this version may or may not work with decss encription packages.I don't know. These are the sort of question you will have to ask youself and seek to answer. The abovemention list of your looks impressive but unless they are the right combination of packages it will not work. will your BIOS allow you to boot from a CD? put the first CD in the "cupholder" and give it a slide towards the box, it should close and then boot up from the CD and select INSTALL and expert. repartition the hard drive to suit you... you will like MDK, it installs smoothly and only too simple. Re: [newbie] 8.2 install gone awry
this (in my personal experiance) is a CD that has one scratch that is screwing with only a few programs. (or it may be a screwed CDreader). try the install again, this time install just a few programs (and if you are watching, you may find it tells you (earlier in the copy process) what file could not be installed. you may also be able to boot with the CD and hit F1 at the first chance (I think it's when you "hit enter to install or upgrade") and try to install LILO at that time. (maybe as simple as typeing lilo at the prompt) Hope this helps On Wednesday 05 June 2002 03:10 pm, you wrote: > On Wednesday 05 June 2002 01:54 pm, Scott Wagner wrote: > > - Original Message - > > From: "Kaj Haulrich" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > > To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > > Sent: Tuesday, June 04, 2002 3:57 PM > > Subject: Re: [newbie] 8.2 install gone awry > > > > > On Tuesday 04 June 2002 05:28 am, Scott Wagner wrote: > > > > Hi > > > > I've copied the patch numerous times and each time I try the install > > > > when > > > > > > it comes to the part where you partition the hard drive the floppy > > > > drive starts to work and it just works and works and nothing happens > > > > until I finally exit the install. > > > > What should the file type of the copied patch be? [newbie] Mandrake 8.1 and KDE 3
Hi Could someone answer a question regarding upgrading KDE from 2.2.1 to KDE 3 under Mandrake 8.1. Will the RPM's on the Mandrake distro disks still install under KDE 3? I have read sonewhere that KDE 2... binaries are not compatible with KDE 3. I don't want to install KDE 3 only to find that I can't install other software, such as XMMS for example. [newbie] Can't dupe any CD's. ;-(
Anyone else having trouble duping CD's under 8.2? I had not tried it until just now. X-CD-Roast won't see any CD that I put into my reader (a Toshiba SCSI DVD). It did under 8.1... I've got a Toshiba SCSI DVD and a Plextor CDRW, tied to an Adaptec SCSI card. Both show up under X-CD-Roast. I tried to use for awhile (worked fine in in Mandrake 8.1) I also had the problem where my CDROM was not recognized. I left XCDRoast, opened Gcombust, and was happily burning a CD in about 5 minutes. Actually, it's not very hard to use cdrecord-commands, take a look at the man-page One important thing, though : all IDE burners must be "faked" to the kernel as SCSI-ones. (And it doesn't harm to do the same thing to the CD-reader as well). To do that, you must add an append-statement to /etc/lilo.conf, like image=/boot/vmlinuz label=linux root=/dev/hda1 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append=" hdx=ide-scsi devfs=mount " vga=791 read-only where x in the append-stanza is your actual IDE-drive, in my example hdc is the "master" on the second IDE-bus. Log out of your user account and log back in as root. Open up xcdroast and configure. The most complicated thing is when you set the path. The last tab in configuration is called options or something, but it's where you set permissions for the user accounts, if you're the only user give yourself all the permissions and you won't have to go back to root to change things. Anyway, after starting xcdroast as root go to settings (topmost button to the left) and the tab about diskdrives (third tab) Here you should specify a directory for storing the disc images you create before burning them. Next go to the last tab Users and enter your normal username and check as many of the options below as you like before you click "change Non-Root configuration". After that, you can logout root and start it as a user. As for details on how to burn and setting up the cd burner, I can't help you. Konqueror has file associations, > but what do I do ? what to add , or what to omit , or what to > rearrange ? I know not. Perhaps some of you out there can suggest ? This, I think, is an interesting user interface problem; what do you do when there's a _redirection_ to a file you're trying to download. If I click on a file in Konqueror called 'bloggs.zip', which is linked to directly, it asks 'do you want to open it in Ark?'. If I click on a URL which points indirectly to a file called bloggs.zip (typically via a CGI script which points to a mirrored server) it asks 'what do you want to open it with?' This behaviour with direct download (particularly annoying with RAM files when you're trying to play an audio file) is probably a bug, but what happens when you drag and drop is hard to get round. If you drag and drop to the desktop, how does Konqueror 'know' that you want to save the ZIP file rather than the CGI file? (In that instance it's obvious - 99 per cent of time the ZIP file - but there are surely other instances where it's not). I think the HTML files you found are a result of all this. basically, you need to run it as root and set what users can do with it.. chose "setup" then go through and set all the various elements.. in particular the "users" select your username and anyone elses that should be able to use it. and set what they can do... once you finish, save the configuration, then go back and run it as your username.. all should work fine. rgds Frank -Original Message-From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Heather ReedSent: Wednesday, 5 June 2002 7:41 PMTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Subject: [newbie] xcdroast help Hi all I have just installed xcdroast (together with cdrecord). [newbie] Mandrake 8.2 Installation - Problem No. 1 (Printing)
Hi Y'all, Just got 8.2 installed (as an upgrade on 7.2). Been putting off upgrading for about a year because it always involves so much re-configuration and I had my 7.2 working mostly how I wanted it. Anyhow, I can't print anything now - the print utilities don't show a printer installed even though I had a Canon BJC 4200 recognised under my 7.2 setup. Hardrake can locate it but these settings don't seem to transfer. And when I try to use WWW.cups.admin which worked for me before, I get Netscape doing a search for http//localhost.port 631 which turns up an article on how this guy tried to install a printer using cups and got a Netscape search instead. I haven't been following 8.2 threads till now so this question may already have been dealt with, but any info would be much appreciated. I'm already starting to regret leaving 7.2. -- Graham Watkins For me, morning begins when I realize that the soft warm body curled up next to me is a cat. RE: [newbie] disk space advice
keep a console open, and in it, have this running: tail -f /var/log/syslog then you get a realtime updating window of whats being added to syslog.. then you can use all your usual apps and see what they are adding. rgds frank -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of dfox Sent: Wednesday, 5 June 2002 11:22 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [newbie] disk space advice > /dev/hdb3 12G 11G 1.5G 88% / > /dev/hdb6 2.0G 868M 1.1G 44% /home > > which seems fine... but nearly every day '/' gets up to 100% .. and can > be brought down to 88% by deleting /var/log/syslog .. meaning this log > file gets to about 1.5G in size. Hmm. I went through an exercise recently (I get a big pile of news nere). syslog and fetchnews (mainly due to that) tend to write fairly *large* files when slogging down a big newsfeed. I originally had /var on its own rather small partition (maybe 500 megs). It turned out that well -- 500 megs wasn't nearly enough to use for /var, and 1.6 gigs (/var/spool, on a separate older drive) was too small to use for news. So I moved things around, got rid of /opt (didn't really need it anyway), and used the extra disk space. Plus I gave /var/spool its own slice of disk real estate - 5 gigs (used to have /opt there) and turned the whole 1.6 gig drive over to /var, just becauase of those really big logs. There were several times when I had to do my own rotating - which isn't all that difficult. You need to 'service stop syslog' to turn the syslog service off (as root, btw) and also go into the /var/log and gzip the rather large file. At the same time, you can move the old log files out of the way. That's basically what the syslog script does. For instance: cd /var/log rm -f biglog.5.gz mv biglog.4.gz biglog.5.gz mv biglog.3.gz biglog.4.gz mv biglog.2.gz biglog.3.gz mv biglog.1.gz biglog.2.gz gzip biglog mv biglog.gz biglog.1.gz touch biglog Then restart ('service syslog start') your syslog, and the space is given back. And you don't have to blindly remove stuff in /var/log - that approach may cause you to lose some log data that you will need. Oh, and I've experienced times where there wasn't enough space on the disk to hold the gzipped copy - so in that event, I would cp the log files to /tmp, gzip them there and then mv out of /tmp to /var/log. :) > What can I do to prevent this? tips? I don't really like the idea of > setting up a cron job to daily delete it! :) That would be counterproductive - why delete logs that you just created that day? And the other suggestions - they too have merit. You might have to make /var bigger, or symlink /var/log to /home. I don't particularly like the latter, since it means that if you backup /home you get log files in the backup too. What you probably should do first is to try and narrow down what it is that's creating such a big log file. Use 'tail' on it periodically to find ouit what kinds of things it's writing there.
