RE: [newbie] Where can I find Xconfigurator file in Mandrake 8.2?

2002-06-06 Thread Franki

I think he meant the binary setup program xconfigurator..

I don't have it on mine either..

is it an option in rpmdrake? if you search for it, it may show a package to
install.

[newbie] how can i improve vnc responsiveness?

2002-06-06 Thread Stormjumper

i'm remote accessing my Mandrake Linux box thru vnc.
it's almost unbearably slow.
the speed doesn't seem to differ much regardless of color depth,
i've tried 8, 15 and 16, so for now, i'm using 15.

i'm wondering if upgrading my 10mbps hub to a 100mbps
switch will make much of a diff,
since the cpu utilization on both the server/client doesn't
seem to be much, around 20-30%

or is my bottleneck somewhere else?

thanks.

Server
Mandrake Linux 8.2, default install
VNCserver run from command line
vncserver -geometry 900x700

Client
MS Win98
VNCclient 3.3.3r9 from http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/

I noticed in the latest Mandrake Club newsletter;

"It's hard to break the old habits, but it looks as if we are finally doing
it! Thanks to Lenny, Till, and Damien, the MandrakeClub downloads area has
finally started receiving new RPMs for MandrakeLinux 8.2:

* drivers for Connexant HSF and HCF modems"
they gots lots of other goodies for club members too (discounts,etc...)
well it looks like I will have to put away my soapbox.

RE: [newbie] Postfix help

2002-06-06 Thread Franki

I assume that you have an internal network with private IP address's and
NAT?
make sure the linux box's internal IP is set as an interface for postfix.

in your /etc/postfix/main.cf look for this:
inet_interfaces = all

make sure its unhashed.

(or you can manually specify.)
inet_interfaces = 202.165.23.244, localhost, 192.168.0.1

that will make postfix listen on all the relevant interfaces.

then further down, you'll see this:
mynetworks = something.

you should make it something like this:

mynetworks = 192.168.0.0/24, 127.0.0.0/8

(assuming thats your internal ip block.)

there is other stuff, but that all relates to how you set it up... and
without knowing that, its alittle hard to help.

Re: [newbie] Problem installing KDE 3.0.1

2002-06-06 Thread Jim Dawson

Continuation of this message (Damn Evolution!)

I attempted to install KDE 3.0.1 by typing 'urpmi *' in the directory
that I downloaded the Mandrake 8.2 files for KDE 3.0.1 into. Some of the
unresolved dependencies seem to be files that don't exist, such as
'libarts3-1.0.1-3mdk.i586.rpm'. I've checked ftp.kde.org, rpmfind.net,
google, and some Mandrake FTP sites and the particular RPMs just don't
seem to exist.

The offending RPMs are:
libarts3-1.0.1-3mdk.i586.rpm
kdebase3-3.0.1-2mdk.i586.rpm
kdelibs3-3.0.1-2mdk.i586.rpm

libarts3-devel-1.0.1-3mdk.i586.rpm
kdebase3-nsplugins-3.0.1-5mdk.i586.rpm

When I attempt to install using 'rpm -Uvh' I get:

your script would look like this:

#! /bin/sh
# delete the super mario sound file
if [ -e "/location/of/the/file/music.raw" ]; then
rm -f /location/of/the/file/music.raw
fi

make your script executable with the command:

chmod +x /where/you/put/the/script/scriptname

then to get crontab to run it (as root):

crontab -u root -e

This dumps you into vi. You may or may not like this ;-)

Make your crontab entry by pressing the "i" key to enter Insert mode,
then typing:

00 18 * * * /where/you/put/the/script/scriptname

(This would make it run at 18:00 each day. Check out the crontab
command for other options.)

Press Esc to exit from Insert mode, then type:

:wq

and press enter. This will write the file and exit.

wow, I don't know if you want to tell someone that is not aware of the fact
MDK is an OS to "delete all existing partitions" until we have had a chance
to see if he has really over written his fat partition, or just messed with
the MBR so he don't see his fat partition

of course if you see the win fat partition BEFORE you delete all the
partitions, then you may very well have not lost the house, just missplaced

ext3 may (or not) be the best choice, I (personally) would suggest ext2, and
for swap a standard suggestion is 2x the amount of ram.

while there are third party (non-free) software to allow WINblow$ to see
linux partitions, Mandrake Linux can, out of the box, see, read and write to
many other types of file systems. (IMHO, this is because Linux works
correctly and winBlow$ works the way Uncle Billy wants.)

hm.. i think you need an explaination..

Windows and Linux are both Operating systems. they are both used to fullfill similar
tasks. therefore,
when you use the Linux installer, it will overwrite Windows partitions unless you tell
it not to.
Linux and windows can coexist, but it takes a bit of experience with partitions ..
some practice,
and some trial and error.

now, if you forgot your login/password and cannot use your computer, it's a good
chance to start all over,
since you will probably need to reinstall everything anyway.

do the Linux installation process again. this time, choose the expert install, so you
can choose
how to partition your hard drive. this will let you choose how much space you want to
leave to Linux,
as well as restore your windows installation.

when you come to the partitioning stage of the installer, do as follows:

( the partition manager is pretty intuitive and i think you can follow these steps just
by reading the captions in the buttons. )

first of all: select and delete all existing partitions, one by one. All of your
harddrive space
should be displayed as a white bar, meaning all of the space is free.

second: create your first partition with filesystem FAT32. ( i think it's labeled
"Win98 FAT32" in
  the installer )
use the sliders in the 'create partition' dialog to give it as much space as you
like, but
remember you need some space for linux too. leave about 2 GB AT LEAST for Linux.
the option "mount point" is the folder inside of which you want Linux to show
your
Windows 98 files. "/mnt/windows" or any name you like, inside of /mnt/ is a good
option.

third: as the new fat32 partition shows now in the dialog ( it will be displayed in
blue )select
the remaining "white" space, and click 'create' button again. this time, choose
'ext3'
filesystem, give this partition all of the space you have left, minus 500 MB.
you will
use those 500 MB on the next step. The mount point for this partition will be
the root
directory. in mount point, simply select the slash " / ".

fourth: you should have the blue fat32 partition and one red ext3 partition and a
little 500 MB
blank space left. select that blank space and create a filesystem of type
"Linux swap".
pull the slider all the way to the right, to make sure you waste no space. the
mount point
for this one, is "swap".

now you should have the blue fat32, the red ext3 and the last green Linux Swap.

now, this is the importat step:

-

once you have made all of the partitions, choose to format them all. once you are done
with this, exit the installer. reboot your computer, and reinstall your windows 98.

as you complete your windows installation you will notice that your hard-drive space
will
not show the space being used by Linux partitions. that's the way it is. Windows cannot
see or display filesystems other than FAT, so while you are in windows, Linux will be
invisible.

once you are happy again with your windows installation ( you may have some problems
downloading
all the porn again ;o) ) you can get back to installing Linux.

( when you are installing more than one operating system in a computer, it's always
better to
install windows first, since it's more agressive on the boot settings and would
overwrite
your Linux boot entry no matter what you did, and it would cause more problems. )

once you enter the Linux installation again, make sure you don't delete or format
any partitions, as they are already ready-to-go and you don't want to risk
formatting your windows partition AGAIN by mistake.

Always read the help messages displayed in the lower part of the screen. they
may help you understand what you are doing. that's why they are there.

And please remember: Logins are important in Linux. when the installer asks you
for an administrator password and/or usernames/passwords, use names you can remember,
if not write them down.

Finally, once the installation is complete, reboot your computer and you should
see a dialog on every start-up from now on asking if you want to boot Linux or Windows.

I hope this helps anyone who reads it, i don't think i'm too good at explaining
things,
but this should be a start for you to read..

anyway, didn't the magazine that

When you installed the software you were asked to set a password
Now it seems you may have forgotten it. Am I correct?

The easy way to change the root password is

At the linux boot screen, type

linux single

and when it comes up you will see a black screen with a prompt like this

#

Now you type

# passwd

And you can change the password to something you know (like 111)

Now to help you more than that you need to run this command

# uname -a

and write down what it says, so we knoe what we are dealing with. LOTS
of linux disks have appeared in magazines, and we need to know which
one. After that

# reboot

will get you started

Your login name is root

Your password is 111

Now you can add other users and so on. If it is MandrakeLinux, I can
instruct you further on how to set up users and to set up autologin, but
I really really need to know the version, which the uname output will
give me unequivocally.

Linux *IS* your operating system. Windows is probably gone forever. Linux
is not a program that runs within windoze.

In the KDE desktop (which is 'standard' for ML8.1 and ML8.2) you have:
K (in the same place as 'start' in Win98 :) ) -> multimedia -> sound ->
soundmixer. If that doesn't work your card is not properly set up.

Mandrake Control Centre is the first place to configure hardware I think. HTH,

Hi,

If you can get into Windows and want to remove Linux then the easiest
way would probably be to run fdisk and then delete the Linux partitions.

If you want to auto-login when you reach the graphical prompt then you
can set this in the Mandrake Control Centre once you are logged in, but
you will need to login manually at least once to be able to set this up.

Steve.

Type 'gcc --version' in a terminal. That'll probly return
'2.96'. When Red Hat 7.0 was released, it had a real buggy 2.96
version. Mandrake's 2.96 is completely different. So to get around
mplayer's authors rants about gcc 2.96, compile their source with

./configure --disable-gcc-checking

Perhaps some one can suggest a way of making this alteration via the root

It is best to leave the default compiler set to that with which the
kernel was compiled which in 8.2 was gcc-2.9.6

the mplayer build problem has been discussed numerous times.
The aversion it has for 2.9.6 is because of RH using a pre 2.96 and
calling it 2.9.6.
This is not the case with mandrake so the --disable-gcc-checking option
can be used without problem.

Should you still prefer to do the build with gcc3.0 then;
Open a terminal that you can set aside to be used for building with
gcc3.0
su to root and enter # export CC=gcc-3.0.4
>From that point, unless you install a new kernel any program built from
That terminal will use gcc3.0

[newbie] Java development

2002-06-06 Thread Azrael

I'm about to start work on my MSc project which will be done in java -
unfortunatly.
I've just moved over from windows completly.. so have never done any
java under linux - although I am not totally new to linux.

Having used bluej under windows - is there any product of equal
simplicity that I can use under linux? Any tips/comments on the best
utilities to use for java?

Why naw, it ain't gonna get confused. The default appears to be handled by a
link in /etc/alternatives. Change the link to change the default compiler.
Also many configure scripts allow you to specify which compiler to use with
the switch --cc= (I think that's it, do a ./configure --help to get exact
syntax).
Shoot, just go for it and worry after you get an error (but that's just me:
untar, read README & INSTALL, then go for it!). using --disable-gcc-checking
--enable-gui --disable-runtime-cpudetection is my usual formula, that way I
don't have to worry about it complaining or my risking the compiler by
goofing with it.

Anyway, someone should make a howto for this mplayer as there are sooo many
questions about it here and in the ngs.

Well, I seem to have,
gcc-cpp v2.96-0.76mdk
gcc v2.96-0.76mdk
gcc3.0 v3.0.4-2mdk (gnu compiler)
gcc3.0-cpp v3.04-2mdk
so any of these should be OK ?
It doesn't seem to matter then that so many compiler versions are
present at once, they don't get confused then ?

Thanks for the offer but my curiosity is sufficiently satisfied now, I'll just
continue to be grateful that I'm Windows free as apparently there are some
variants of these worms that trash virus scanners as soon as they are
downloaded and as I download 100+ e mails a day it would be easy for one to
sneak through and destroy a Windows installation.

The Good Doctor has an article about this subject:

No opinion yet, I'm just reading the article. As an aside, didn't he
once
publish the time to compile a kernel in his hardware reviews? I thought
I
remembered seeing it once upon a time.

My memory is about as reliable as my opinion in legal matters though.

There is no such thing for Linux - proprietary file formats strike once
again :(

There are three choices:

- - get someone else with Publisher to export the file in a universal
format (eg PDF);

- - wait for OpenOffice.org or StarOffice to implement a filter (it's a
frequently requested wish);

- - have a fireside chat with the author of Scribus, who is slowly but
surely building up a nice DTP application:

My mistake. After taking a second look, I saw it close to the bottom.
I also started looking into my own scanner again and saw that
development has been actively progressing. It looks like I'll get a
linux scan out of it yet. :) Good luck on your own.
