OSS or the commercial driver vendor? OSS is Open (ie, free, and open)
Sound System, the commercial vendor most likely _isn't_. Just what
vendor driver did you get, anyhow? A quick search turned up
http://www.opensound.com/ While I believe that Linux's future depends
upon $elling and us buyin software/support, I also feel that the
product needs to remain free open source.

What does 'less /proc/interrupts' say? I really suspect you've got
a hardware deficiency or a bios mis-config. A decent AC97 should'a been
reocgnized and setup with no effort. You do have (M$) pn'pray support
turned off in bios, no? Another good bet is to turn off (M$) APIC in
bios.

Nothing, altho They would like you to believe it works. The PCI spec
calls for IRQ sharing, but it's sometimes unsuccesful. Search the ML
archive for 'uhci'. IIRC, there's a quick edit to a modules.conf line
for fixin this.

I dunno, I don't use a ether, or anything that relies on USB
(universal serial bus, just another way of sayin a failing M$
approach). Remember His Billness' live presentation of W9x's 'new'
implementation of USB ... instant BSOD televised. (i'm still
chucklin')

Does sound work if you remove the ethernet card? Use linuxconf, or
mcc to make sure harddrake and kudzu are running/started on boot.

I imagine that sound and ethernet sharing the

No need to be so formal ... i ain't;) I'm also runnin out

Actually Damian, yahoo has very recently released a new version of its
messenger software for Linux to make it look more like the other platform
versions (I believe it was released sometime last month, but not quite sure).
They even have a Mandrake specific RPM available for download on the website.
Finally someone at yahoo is starting to see the importance of Linux and is
finally doing something about catching it up with the other platforms. Now
if only they will make it work for chat rooms and webcam support ... :-)

[newbie] Smoothwall/No-IP.com

2002-07-21 Thread Jordan Elver

Hi,
This is a bit of a shot in the dark, I just don't know what to check for :-)
I have Smoothwall box connected to an ADSL line, this acts as my firewall and
gateway for local machines to connect to.

On one of the machines, I am running Apache on port 80, which I can view from
its IP or Hostname within the local network. The Smoothwall box is setup to
forward port 80 to the internal IP of the Apache box also on port 80. I am
then using No-IP.com to keep track of my dynamic IP and forward to my
Smoothwall box, which should then forward to my internal Apache machine.

I cannot view the Apache box but I am pretty sure that the No-IP is working,
because when I turn off the port forwarding, it says "Host Not Found", but
when I turn it on, it just times out. Does anyone know what I should be
looking for? I seem close, but not quite? :-(

Thanks for any pointers,
Cheers, Jord

Thanks for the reply, but I have upgraded all packages available which in the
past has resolved the cdrw problem, and no go. The problem with the compact
flash reader is that I can not find it recognized as any device anywhere.
Does not show up under /dev/usb, /scsi , /sda , or anything else. It shows
up under usbview as shown below, I just don't know how to access it. It is
formatted as fat and works ok with the drivers supplied for windows 98 on a

Try PixiePlus It is a truly awsome image file manager. It displays PCX (but
not as thumbnails) Only available for KDE3. http://www.mosfet.org/pixie/
Texstar had an RPM posted, but it seems to be gone, so you would have to

2002-07-21 Thread Joseph Braddock

Dennis,

After you reinstalled Mandrake (I'm assuming 8.2), did you update the CD burning
software you are using. If I recall, most were broken out of the box and had to be
patched or updated.

One other thing on your compact flash (although this poster was asking about smart
media readers). I know that on my smart media card, I had to have the camera format
the media first and I wasn't sure what it formatted it to. I'm wondering if your
reader is working, but the format isn't being recognized. In your fstab, if you are
using vfat, try using msdos or umsdos. I had to use one of them with an earlier
version of Linux. If you dual boot, you can check the properties under windows and
see if it indicates what file system it is using (mine actually says something like
DOS, not FAT, which led me to try mounting it as msdos)

Just a thought.

Although it makes no claim to Linux compatibility, I am having very good results with

My guess is yes. I don't what format emacs stores email as, but mozilla

[newbie] Sharing Mozilla Email

2002-07-21 Thread Richard Ingram

Hi,

Just a quick question before I upgrade my main PC's HD and get 8.2 and XP
running on it. Has anyone done or tried the following.

1. Sharing between Mozilla and/or Emacs mailboxes with 8.2/XP ? I would like
to read my mail from both OS's and store mail from the mail lists in folders
etc. Same for bookmarks etc.

2. Same for reading news from Emacs, i.e.. share the rc files so I can
resume reading under either OS.

3. I use cygwin under XP so was thinking of sharing my Linux ~home area and
mounting this from cygwin.

The way I am going to set things up is have the 80GB HD split 50/50 for
XP/MDL and have my 60GB disk shared with a fat32 file system and have my
home directory on this, also my CD images/backups etc.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Richard.
