[newbie] acknowledge changes to msec

2002-07-23 Thread gikoreno
 Hey everyone!@

When I look into /var/log/messages I get various of the following:

"Security Warning: There are modifications for port listening on your machine :"

"Security Warning: These packages have changed on the system :"

"Security Warning: These config files belonging to packages have changed of status on the system"

I get them every day. These changes are correct, and I am aware of them (and happy to be notified). Yet, since I agree on them being correct, I'd like to be able to acknowledge them and not get them again (so if there is a change a second time, I will know, else I might just ignore cause I thought it was mine).

How do I do that?

Thanks in advance:

No, we have a library naming policy that takes care of that; however,
you should be aware that Abi was not included in the download edition
and was only accidentally included in the PowerPack because it has a
proclivity for uglification of fonts system-wide.

Warren,

I solve the problem by using what's called the US International keyboard driver.
Mandrake offers the choice on installation. It is an English keyboard layout that uses
a so-called dead-key to allow all the diacritical marks for Spanish and I'm sure for
several other languages.

áéíóúñ ü The ' apostrophe key is the dead-key. Press ' key once then a yields á.

The ñ is done by pressing the tilde key once then the n thus a ñ. On mine it's a
shift-~ then an n. Easier said than done.

At least with this you don't have to remember where all the keys moved to when
switching from the regular English driver to the Spanish driver.

I haven't used the spanish keyboard driver for over ten years.

saludos,
Richard.

There was a 7.0 version for 486, and it should not be difficult to take
the srpms for 7.1 and compile them using the 486-enabled 7.0 and the
right flags for rpm --rebuild. 7.1 was freaking beautiful; the last
with KDE 1.1.2 and 45Meg of KDE themes whose like we have not seen again
(and in fact if ever the legacy theme importer on KDE works we still
have nothing like them today). I can send you earlier versions, but
they are not compiled for 486 and under until you get to 5.3 which was
only optimized for pentium but would work on earlier architectures. If
you want 5.3, which was quite neat in its day and had a sound effect for
nearly every GUI action, just get it from www.civileme.net/Software If
you want the apps for 5.3, write to me privately and I will make a CD of
those that can now be distributed.

The disk space is no problem, but I would be concerned about the memory
on the machines. 5.3 will work well on 32M with GUI but 7.0/7.1 would
require 64. Servers are best off with 6.1 and the last kernel it was
given on security updates, but that one really does need Pentium.

Of course none of these are compliant with the Linux Standard Base.
They were al;l made prior to its adoption.

Can't you just setup a Spanish keyboard?
If you are using KDE, it's trivial to set it up and switch between 2
keyboard layouts:
KDE Control center-> Peripherals->Keyboard->Layout
Mark your keyboards in the "Additional Layouts" section and once you've hit
the apply button, you should see a keyboard switch icon in the taskbar.
You can switch by clicking on that icon, by right clicking on it, or by
hitting alt+ctrl+k.

Once you have set this up and are used to alt+ctrl+k to cycle through the
keyboard layouts (I use U.S., Icelandic and Norwegian), you'll not want to
type the "Alt+164" keystrokes again :-)

I hope this solves your problem,

Narfi.
ps. Of course, if you're not using KDE, then I'm afraid I can't help you.

Yes and No. It is quite possible to have both libpng2 and libpng3 installed
and have apps use whichever they need.

But Sometimes it does not seem to work.

The simplest solution is to use only apps compiled for libpng3.

As it happens there is an Abiword in 8.2/Contribs compiled for libpng3

Check this out

it is a microsoft thing that is causing them difficulties

Just thought I'd add - I use Galeon as my default and as long as I open a
link from Kmail it works fine. IF I open the link in Kmail with a Galeon
window -already- opened, then it does just like she said, and I get an error

Given that you're connecting to a Win2K share, this sounds like ye olde
'problem' that shares formatted with NTFS can only be read and not written to
from Linux; this is because Microsoft's file system formats are undocumented
and closed source (so writing, given that reverse engineering has to be

[newbie] Sound, ethernet, & irq's

2002-07-23 Thread Marcia

Dear All,

For some reason I cannot get my ethernet to accept any other irq except for 5
where my sound resides and they are definitely conflicting. I have gone into
the bios as suggested and turned off power management, plug & play, freed up
some irq's but the ethernet seems to just want 5. I have not tried to move
the sound because I plan to install vmware and it wants the sound at irq 5.
Does anyone have any suggestions here? I have the realtek chip 8139 that uses
the 8139too driver. I am using LM8.2 on my brand new Athlon XP 1600+ 512 megs
of ram machine. I purchased the OSS commercial sound which works well if I
take the ethernet of f 5, but then I cannot get on the net. Any help will
be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Marcia

Re: [newbie] RFEs -- Better Ways to Search the Archives

2002-07-23 Thread Randy Kramer

Hmm, that didn't work!

I was hoping to spark some interest in some ideas I have for better ways
to search the archives. I first documented them here:

But I'm copying and pasting them here. They both require
"infrastructure" improvements, either at the archive site (better
indexing and search) or in the way mail list handlers work:

Add Link to the Archive before Sending to List Members
--

Enter a post in the archives as soon as it gets to the mail list server,
and then include a link to the archived email with the post that goes
out to the subscribers. An example of the link: "This post has been
archived as
http://www.mandrake.com/en/archives/newbie/2002-06/msg02005.php.";

(Was that clear? Normally, when someone posts to a mail list, IIUC, it
first goes to the mail list server, and is sent from there to the
subscribers. What I'm suggesting is that it take a momentary detour when
it arrives at the mail list server during which it is added to the
archives and a line is added to the post (perhaps a header, or a footer)
which says, for example, "This post has been archived as
http://www.mandrake.com/en/archives/newbie/2002-06/msg02005.php.";.) (I
recognize the archive could be moved. I'm hoping that even if it does
move, things like the "2002-06/msg02005.php" would be preserved (along
with stuff to identify the archive, like "en/archives/newbie").)

Dedicated Search Engine on Site with Daily Index Update
---

Provide a search engine on the site specifically for the archives, with
the index updated at least daily. (Preferably more often -- should be
little reason it can be done every hour with a cron job -- if it indexes
only the added posts it should not be a major burder (little or no worse
than doing the same thing every 24 hours).

Actually, for my purposes, that is what I usually do -- I want a link to
the post that I can refer others to (on WikiLearn).

I'm glad the mail-archive site is still archiving these -- in a few
trials, the search seems a little more useful -- I'll keep testing it.

Thanks for the advise.

Finally, insert CD#1, expert, Update, let it find the drive, go
through all the motions and back in business.

I know there must be a way to probe for it and set it up but this
is the only way I found that works.

Michael,

Thanks, that seems to work somewhat better than the Mandrake archives.
(I'll do some more searching to confirm that.)

Somehow I thought these archives had gone away when the Mandrake
archives came into existence -- I hope they stay around, at least until
the Mandrake archives get a better search / index tool.

Yes I know what you mean. I well remember the cold sweat of fear I felt when I
tried installing the Nvidia drivers the first time, and screwed it up and
ended up in a text console. :-)

That console command 'rpm -ivh NVIDIA_GLX.i386.rpm' is what will execute when
you click on the RPM file in konqueror, so it is not actually necessary for
you to use the command line. Nor is it actually necessary to leave X before
starting the procedure. I have not done so the last three times I have
installed the drivers.

BTW: Why do you say that the Geforce 4 is too new to be recognised at install
time? All Nvidia cards use the same driver. You should be able to just
declare it as any type of Nvidia card. Mandrake will then load the
Opensource "nv" driver which will not work 3D, but will work in 2D perfectly
well.

You can set up the card type by logging in as root user from the text login
with the command

XFdrake --expert --noauto (The first screen is to select monitor resolution.
Tab to 'Cancel' and it will move on to card selection)

I did say no. I had already run Norton's Scandisk and Disk Doctor earlier.
Disk Doctor gave me the message you are referring to almost immediately. I
cancelled out. Later, I tried to boot Mandrake 8.2. and I got the error
message I posted earlier so I came here to ask for advice.

I also tried Mandrake's Repair option and it said it couldn't fix my partion
table problem.

I tried to reinstall and I got to this screen:

Could hda have been my bootloader? I only had 1 drive before I installed
Linux.

Any help you can give to staighten out this mess will be appreciated.

Nothing appears in that new window.

This seems to be correct. I never seem to get buffer underuns so
obviously cdrecord is being causious in some way, Yes my writer, Mitsumi
in this case has 2mb of buffer, can anyone tell me the logic of the fact
that my older writers which could not exceed 4x write spped all had 4mb
of buffer built in to them , yet this 24x write speed Minsumi seems only
to need 2Mb of buffer, the logic of the setup escapes me. Obvious it
doesn't need it , but why ?

I will look into that switch, I didn't know cdrecord had one.

Sorry, by definition anyone who is intelligent enough to
migrate to Mandrake-Linux can not be stupid, therefore
you are not stupid.   Now, the easiest way to install the RPMs is:
  1. open konqueror by clicking on the home icon on your desk
top. 2. find the downloaded rpms files
  3. copy both files to a new folder 4.
open a terminal and type "su" and then the root password without the
  quotes. 5. type cd folderwiththenvidiafile.name
  6. type "urpmi *.rpm"  without the quotes
  7. the rpms will be installed or dependencies will be
listed. 8. open a text editor, I like gedit. Navigate
to /etc/x11/xf86config-4 and then do the changes as
      mandated
i.e.  add  "Load   "glx" " and change
"nv" to "nvidia" as indicated by the instructions from
the Nvidia site below :  http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86_40/1.0-2960/README.txt

If you already have an XF86Config file working with a
different driver (such as the 'nv' or 'vesa' driver),
then all you need to do is find the relevant Device
  section and replace the line:
      Driver "nv"
      (or Driver "vesa")
  with
      Driver
  "nvidia"
In the Module section, make sure you have:
      Load
  "glx"
You should also remove the following lines:       Load  "dri"
      Load
  "GLcore"
if they exist.  There are also numerous options that can
be added to the XF86Config file to fine-tune the
NVIDIA XFree86 driver.  Please see Appendix D for
a complete list of these options.

What irritates me is Nvidia specifically says they
support linux but they won't show me how to make the card work with linux.
Is that not irritating or what.

Drop in your CD#1 install and hit F1 at the splash screen then type

rescue

and try re-running LILO.

It appears that Norton did something to the pointer in the MBR

It may also have renumbered partitions which has catastrophic effects on
linux installs. I just discovered that XP installation CAN and WILL
renumber partitions and wreck a working linux system

So if rerunning LILO from rescue does not do the trick a fresh install
may be necessary This could happen if the partitions were renumbered so
that say /dev/hda7 was pointing at / and now points at the swap
partition or something similar...

SMP is symmetric Multiprocessor. If you have two or four CPUs on your
motherboard, you need this one

Secure corresponds to kernel-secure, a kernel optimized for server and
firewalling use.

UP corresponds to the standard kernel that is installed if your machine
has a single CPU (Unitary Processor)

Please note that if you use these binary only drivers which are kernel
modules, then if you update the kernel, they WILL NOT WORK any longer.
That is the (largest practical)problem with binary-only drivers. It is
not such a problem in Windows because the kernel is changed far less
frequently (the Win95 and Win98 kernels are byte-for-byte identical)
which seems almost an alien practice for linux where the kernel changes
early and often.

Another problem with binary-only drivers is that you cannot be sure of
what you are getting. Several prizes have been awarded lately fro
proof-of-concept spyware that will report your activity to merchants for
their markketing, all working below the level of the user's knowledge.
With the continuing need for revenue, I would expect to see the
binary-only drivers that do not already have such spyware to have it
very soon, all to the enrichment of the vendor of such binary-only drivers.

Well, it depends--standalone or integrated into a single machine?

Mandrake has a wonderful standalone firewall called SNF, but it requires
a dedicated machine to stand between the internet interface and the
local network running nothing but SNF. This sort of "border firewall"
is also available as "smoothwal", a separate product, and esmith
gateway, and probably as the linux Router Project in one of its many forms.

If you want a firewall on your own machine, open a terminal and

su

to get into privileged mode then

Inter

will cause InteractiveBastille to be spelled out

and will run it and you can learn about firewalling as you
choose your rules to set it up.

You may want to edit /etc/security/limits.conf

to keep from being gigged about files too big. It has a rather low
limit, which is activated by setting up the firewall.

Civileme

There are several otherfirewalling tools on the distribution CDs, drop
in CD#1 and select Expert. Upgdate and toggle to the flat list on
indiividual package selection and spend a couple hours reading about all
the uninstalled packages you can select to find them.

Well, as long as the FIFO doesn't go empty I don't think you need to
worry about anything. The CD-RW has a buffer of its own, so I assume
if FIFO runs out of data there still is at least 2 megs of
drive-internal buffer to be written and FIFO can get filled meanwhile.
Anyways, you can always increase the FIFO using a switch, don't
remember which one, though. (fifo=16 maybe?)

To clear that up, there are 74 min / 650 MB (~681,000,000 Bytes) and
80 min / 700 MB (~734,000,000 Bytes) disks. You don't fit much more on
them than their specified capacity, a few seconds / megs with
overburning, however that's not recommended. Tom was talking about
800MBs of WAVs to a 700MB CD. That's because you burnt WAVs as an
Audio CD. The Audio CD can store more Audio than Data because with
data about one third of all the space is allocated to error
correction, which isn't that important with Audio. You still burnt
only ~80 mins of Audio, but that doesn't mean you burnt 800 MB.
Megabytes refer to data capacity and minutes to Audio capacity so it's
not correct to say I burnt 800 MB of Audio.
Of course, there are disks which can hold up to 99 minutes of Audio,
but they aren't that common.

appropriate for you ;-)

Have you tried making a new icon/link.
I seem to recall reading that the kde/mandrake install
made link doesnt work, and you need to make a new.

Thanks, yes, I tried it. I get a dialog:

X Error
Could not mount device.
the reported error was:

mount: special device /dev/sda4 does not exist.

Apparently something isn't right in the line in fstab, but I've not
found a better example.

Just remembered. In my original instructions on editing the XF86Config-4 file
I should have told you to look for the lines in the "Modules" section

Load "dri"
Load "GLcore"

and if either is present, to remove them.
That could be why X is not starting.

Yes, it's just with mailing lists and is a fairly common occurrence. There's

ok just tried that didn't work. I can't get into X, so I gotta do this from

I got the right rpm. I'm in windows right now, because I'm even more

old explaination for that one I think) But tell me if I'm wrong shouldn't I
be able to put the rpm in the C drive under windows and still access it at

Do not worry. It is not too difficult. You do not even need to log out of KDE
to install it.

UP means UniProcessor i.e. One CPU on your motherboard This is the one you
want. SMP means Symmetric Multi Processor.

Download the GLX and kernel RPMs

Note: These RPMs are for the STANDARD Mandrake8.2 kernel. If you have
upgraded your kernel then do not use them.

Install the GLX RPM first (Just click on it in Konqueror and it will install)
Install the kernel RPM

Now you have to edit a file. Using KMenu>Applications>File Tools>File
Manager-SuperUserMode open the file /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

Locate the text

Section "Module"

and at the end of that section insert a line

Load"glx"

Now locate the text

Section "Device"
Identifier "NVIDIA GeForce (generic)"
VendorName "Unknown"
BoardName "Unknown"
Driver "nv"

and replace "nv" with "nvidia"

save the file. Log out of KDE, and at the kdm log in screen select
Menu>Restart X

The screen should flash a few times and then you should see an Nvidia splash
screen.

That is it. All done.

[newbie] Problems Installing New Vid Card

2002-07-23 Thread Metamorphysical

PLEASE, I'm slow at getting the hang of Mandrake so explain this to me like
a 5 year old.
I just bought a GeForce4 Ti4400 and I need help on installing the
drivers(RPM's?) from a command prompt.
The Users guide says it supports Linux but I can't figure out how to install
the rpm's.

There are 3 listed on the Nvidia site:
#1 Mandrake8.2 UP i586 Architecture
#2 Mandrake 8.2 SMP i586 Architecture
#3 Mandrake 8.2 Secure i586 Architecture

I don't know what the UP, the SMP, or the Secure mean. Can someone help?

Sincerely,
Lost in Space

I also got a couple of those; as someone who runs a few mailing lists myself
strange things like this happen from time to time, when the recipient mail
server gets in a twist and sends a misconfigured response to my server which
then further misunderstands it and sends it to the list members. (About 18
months ago Freeserve and NTL were throwing up lots of such errors, to my
chagrin).

I was amused to see that .ki is Kiribati; a misconfigured server on an little
island far, far away ... :)

I also get loads of 'Percival Farquhar is out of the office from 23/07/2002 to
01/04/2009 and will not be able to understand English in the interim'
autoresponses; spot those who subscribe at work and use Outlook!

where exactly is that .kpersonalizerc file located?

I'm not a fan of grep, guess because I'm not sure how to use it. Is
there a FIND command in KDE or GNOME or XWINDOWS?

Shoot, that dern wizard is going to run every single time without
changing anything! :D And the ~/.kpersonalizerc didn't stop mine.
So, I cut it off at the roots. I used to comment out that whole
section in startkde, but now I highlight it and delete it. :D

I hope the OP don't have to resort to that, but just in case.
