I recently upgraded to Mozilla 1.1 and Galeon 1.2.6 (which now supports Mozilla
1.1.x and 1.2.x). On my system, they are about as fast as Opera. Mozilla 1.2a is
supposed to be even faster, but I don't feel like using an alpha-release.

wouldn't know, miark, i never even tried.
however, i doubt it, i found only minutes later
that the spellchacker was, for some obscure
reason only comprehensible to the maker of such feature,
replacing " - " ( what do you call these in english? ;o))
with question marks. it was not a bug in OO, not a font glitch,
the spellchecker was actually replacing the char, so
probably that's what i would get.

thanks anyway for your quick response. disabling
spellchecker worked.

[newbie] Broadcast 2000/Cinelerra

2002-09-23 Thread _nasturtium

Hello,
A while ago some people suggested Broadcast 2000 to help create my "home
videos" (an alternative to school Powerpoint assignments!). I also downloaded
cinelerra off the heroinevirtual site (ignoring the fact i do not have
anything remotely close to dual athlon 1.6ghz).

Basically, my problem is that i've made some slides as BMPs which i converted
to PNGs to retain quality. (bitmaps aren't supported so i used PNGs).
Unfortunately, when i add my PNGs to my "Asset" list they are converted to
JPEGs of bad quality...is there a way to preserve the picture format/quality?

Also, as i am trying to make a slide show from pictures, is there a quick and
easy way? When i add the pictures to the project they are only for 1 frame
duration, i need to edit the .htal file directly to set the length.

Thanks in advance (and apologies for being a bit long-winded),

No problem - thats what this list is for. That point release did fix my lack

I find Opera fastest for most pages. It also loads much faster and is less
memory intensive. On the other hand, Galeon (1.25) does a better job of
rendering certain pages that are Internet Exploder optimized...Java too,
especially forms (Mozilla 1.x does the best job here.) Lastly, Konqueror is
convenient if you are also using it as a file manager. I find that I end up

Check the instructions at
http://dict.progbits.com/download_dictionary.html
There was a change in manual installation procedure for OOo101 that wasn't well
documented. Since it works in build641, probably just need to check the location of
the dictionary to /share/dict/ooo for OOo101.

[newbie] rebuilding from src=no rpm

2002-09-23 Thread Angus Auld

Well, after installing literally hundreds of megs of software on my system, I'm still
not getting anywhere trying to rebuild my fluxbox-0.1.12-1mdk.src.rpm.

I am getting more lines of text scrolling in my terminal, but the final output is
still the samerpm build errors.

I wonder if someone would tell me how to get the output of my terminal to a file? I
tried adding ">{filename}.txt" after the "rpm --rebuild {filename}.src.rpm" command,
but it doesn't seem to transfer all of the output to the file.

I am going to try a different src rpm, just to see if it is just this flux rpm that
won't build.

I'm still having fun though ;-)

Greetings,

I was fooling around tonight and I realized that the Openoffice 1.0.1 that
installed with rc3 did not have a spell checker.

Looked on the Openoffice.org web page and found instructions to install a
spell checker.

http://whiteboard.openoffice.org/lingucomponent/download_dictionary.html

Trouble is, I believe that I followed the instructions but when I load a test
document that has deliberate misspellings the system locks hard...
so hard that I have no alternative than to press the reset button.
(don't like to have to do that)

I was able to install a 641 version and the spellchecker works fine.
Does anyone know if this is a problem that is common of have I done
something drasticly wrong?

Any help would be appreciated.

If the printer has a very large memory buffer inside
it (40+ pages), killing the print job at the computer
will not stop the printer from finishing printing what
is in it's memory buffer already.

IMHO, 0-60 nuthin beats Opera! Now I will agree that Galeon.or Mozilla, do maybe
have an edge on displaying certain sites.
I like Opera, what can I say? I'm using 6.03, and it is very stable on my Mdk8.2
system. I don't seem to be able to get java working though, so that's a point for
Galeon.

Opera 7 sounds like it may be a winner, but I don't know if that will translate into a
Linux version anytime soon. 8-(

That's just IMHO...not fight pickin'. ;-)

The reason for the "mem=nopentium" in the lilo is that when the kernal was developed
there are memory commands/coding that refer to pentium only commands. If you are
running a Athlon/duron which do not have these commands they cause flaky/erratic
behaviour.

hi..!

does anybody happen to get this, too?

whenever i use a " - " character between two words, OO replaces
it with a question mark. for example,

hello - world

gets replaced by

hello ? world

... does anybody happen to know how to stop this?
i've already tried disabling nearly every autocomplete,
formatting, etc etc etc options.. however it keeps happening..

RE: [newbie] Kernel Panic on boot from Install CD on Athlon

2002-09-23 Thread Cory

Also, what video card is being used? What happens when you attempt an
install in text mode? It would seem that if the problem continues across
multiple distros, then hardware would be the first place I would start
looking. Try a different video card. Also, you may want to look into the
possibility of a bad install CD, I had a similar problem installing MDK 8.2,
and then burned another copy and it worked flawless... a lot of research,
time and effort was wasted on that one. (unlikely that this is the case
since redhat does the same thing, but worth a shot.)

I've tried two approaches and neither have worked. First I tried to build the
source rpm and when that failed, I tried to use the binary for MDK 8.2. That
installed but didn't work. I have an smp machine which if I understand
correctly, makes a big difference. I followed your directions above and when
I try to compile the source rpm, here is the output that I get:

Correct, Linux is about choices, altho the nVidia driver is about
closed source proprietary who knows what? ... no choice, plus the
unauditable introduction of other possible conflicts and/or security
issues. Minus choice.

We can keep battin this back an forth as far as the ballyhooed AMD
(non-existent IMO 'bug'), but it seems to have come down to ... we
both use AMD approved hardware,... we're both usin the same OS and
kernel (even version, current cooker 9.0), ... I believe you've come to
recognize now it's not a AMD processor bug only difference that's
left is the user choice of video driver.

Your choice of the nvidia closed source driver appears to need the
kernel nopentium bandaid to work, my choice to use the open source
XFree driver isn't crippled in this respect. So, as I've been sayin,
driver choice seems to be the standout problem that's left, probly
further aggravated for those users who failed to choose apprv'd quality
hardware to begin with. YMMV

You can get the .src.rpm files from NVidia, get the NVIDIA-GLX and
NVIDIAkernel source rpms. I think they are still the 1.0-2960.src.rpm files.
Down load them to a directory in home named as you like it. Then from a
console su and give root password, at the prompt do " rpm --rebuild NVIDIA*
" and hit enter you should get a whole bunch of script and then in the end
return to the prompt. At that prompt the change directory using " cd
/usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i586" then at the new prompt type "ls" you should see the
list of two rpms you just built. then do " urpmi NVIDIA* " and it will
install the rpms. The Nvidia site tells what files (etc/x11/xconfig-4 or
something close to that) to edit and what to edit.
Sorry if this is more info than you need but it is hard for me to tell what
level of understanding you are at. HTH

It has value up to a point, but is too rigid and is ignorant of people
with abilities different to those of the author. It reminds me of the
frightful proscriptive grammar textbooks used when education was a
little less enlightened.

For example, "Write in clear, grammatical, correctly-spelled language"
sounds wonderful until someone who is dyslexic wants to ask a question,

Thanks Ron, much appreciated. I got the game running without sound using
your start command above. I checked out that website and I'm now
downloading the point release - hopefully that'll fix it.

Jeez playing Q3A without sound... can't hear the buggers coming!

Well the main issue is likely to be making room for Mandrake as the
laptop will likely have NTFS installed. Diskdrake can't resize this, so
you would either have to reinstall XP on a smaller partition or use a
partitioning tool that can resize NTFS. I suspect that Partition Magic
can do this. A second hard drive is also possible of course, but that
may not be an option.

Another possibility is to use a tool like ghost to copy the XP image to
another machine, then back again, selecting a smaller partition size.

If you are fortunate enough to find that XP is installed on FAT32, then
no problem. Diskdrake can resize it during the install. Backup first
of course!

One caveat on all of this - do you have a way of reinstalling XP from
scratch if it fails? i.e. Did you get a restore CD with the system? If
the only restore option is from a partition on the hard drive, think
twice and then once more before jumping in and make sure you understand
the way this works.

These 2 links may help, I am probably not the best person to ask as far as
Mandrake is concerned, as I am actually a Suse user, but shows a interest in
other distros, you will need to get the closest rpms for 9.0 RC2 install them
as explained in the top link, you might have to edit the XF86config file to
change the 'nv driver' in the device section to 'Nvidia', also you might need
to run 'switch2nvidia_glx' as root. Of course the rpms available might not
suit 9.0 RC2. In which case you might have to install from the source
tarballs. Hope some of this ramblings help, I am not terribly good at putting

* ps ax. There's nothing obvious to kill.
* lpq. It says "lp is ready" and "no entries"

It's a 435w Enermax Dual fan, a higher watted model than that listed as
necessary by AMD for the XP1900+.

I always research and an use care in the hardware I purchase even if it
is for a cheap system. I even still believe that the 'best' 3d card that
can be had for the money, especially for linux use, is the ATI Xpert2000
32MB (not the pro version).
I 'choose the GeForce3 for my high end system and I 'choose' to use the
nvidia drivers.
That is part of what linux is about--the ability to have choice.

Currently I am quite happy with the performance I get from all my
systems, except for my gateway where I have to run Win98 but that is
another story.

Might not work in the future ;( Seems Mdk Linux is bound and
determined to make sure icons clutter up my desktop. After an install,
I usually delete 'em all. Never could see any point for havin 'em

Try runnin 'update-menus -n' as root from a terminal. Just a guess,
I haven't seen this behavior. and I use the 'slick' icons package
rather than KDE's. Caution, I don't remember when the -n option came

'update-menus', but do it as root, not user.

Hi Sharrea.

I had this same problem. I installed the full (Loki purchase) version of Q3
and got the same sound error you did. I had to downloand a point release from
the ID Software web site. This fixed it. To see if it is a problem with your
sound drivers, you can start the game with no sound, like this:

quake3 +set s_initsound 0

If it does run with no sound - then it is a sound driver issue.

For more info go to:

http://zerowing.idsoftware.com/linux/

and here is where you can d/l the actual file you need:

ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake3/linux/

Beware, it is a 30+ meg file!

Hope this helps ya get back to fraggin'... :-)

I may have missed it, but I haven't seen info on how the printer was set

have printing from the net or email is when someone includes emoticons

[newbie] TuxRacer frame rate problem.

2002-09-23 Thread Gary Traffanstedt

I'm using Mandrake 9.0 RC2 and when I try to play TuxRacer, using an Nvidia
GeForce 2 card, the low frame rate makes the game nearly unplayable. I've
played the game before, about a year ago on a different machine and the frame
rate was great. I'm using a dual Atlon MP system with 512 megs of memory so
it's most likely not an issue with the speed of my machine or a lack of
memory. Has anyone else experienced this problem and is there an easy
solution?

Re: [newbie] Constant computer crashes

2002-09-23 Thread Gary Traffanstedt

I had this same problem on two machines running dual Athlon MP's. Earlier
versions of Mandrake and other distros would lock up a lot. Some distros and
versions would not even install. One thing that I tried was swapping the
processors so that the voltage leveled out. I had read somewhere that there
is a problem sometimes when running dual MP's where the voltage will be
different to each processor. This helped a bunch on one system.
Secondly, installing Mandrake 9.0 and using the default graphics drivers have
caused no lockups. I have tried Nvidia's drivers and have had problems but
maybe I was just setting that up wrong. But MDK 9 RC2 default everything
(kernel, drivers, etc) has worked great for me.

Try without nopentium, but set the aperature to 4 in bios? Still
lock-up? IE, (from your link), "The kernel bug is often exposed in
conjunction with use of the AGP Aperture on these platforms." Which is
why I suggested a 4mb aperature in my earlier post. Then try again
with the open source drivers. BTW, the AGP Aperature set to 4 is an
old overclockers trick when the PCI bus is way out'a spec due to raisin
the FSB too high. Degrades video performance somewhat, but I wonder if
'nopentium' doesn't also (?).

I've seen you mention you have a Soyo Dragon +, an AMD apprv'd
board. What aggravates the AGP issue, any OS, is PSU's. Specially with
high performance AGP video cards from nVidia or ATI. Watt's, advertised
specs aren't the important PSU specs. Manufacturer is, particularly
model no., as they're marketed under several brand names (eg, I've got
a Powerman 300w PSU in an Inwin case, but the model no. reveals it's
made by Sparkle, and is an AMD appr'vd PSU model). IOW's, all 300+ watt
PSU's vary in 'cleaness', stability of power. AMD takes the effort to
figure out suitable ones, Intel does also.

I'm curious tho why a kernel bandaid (nopentium) would fix a problem
that was reported as fixed in recent kernels (for the last year), or
stems from marginal hardware, and/or wattage hoggin AGP cards. I still
suspect the video drivers are involved, specially the popular closed
source proprietary ones. IOW's I still believe the AGP problem might
be user (choices, ie, driver) and hardware centric.

2002-09-23 Thread Angus Auld

I now have my new kernel...and sources too! Thanks everyone.

I used urpmi, instead of rpm, to do the install. Worked like a charm. Thanks Tom!
Us newbies need lots of help and advice.this is a great place to get it! I would
be stumped big time if it weren't for these forums.

Oh, by the way, I checked on the package in SM, and it is showing it in an installed
state of 144+megs. I guess that is the expanded installed size. SM makes things sound
much worse for us dialup users than is necessary ;-)

All the best!

Now, to build a src rpm.

Re: [newbie] Kernel Panic on boot from Install CD on Athlon

2002-09-23 Thread et

do you have "shared video memory" with an onboard video card? if so you will
need to hit "f1" instead of "enter" when first prompted to hit enter to
install or upgrade. you will then need to tell the installer how much memory
it can use without effecting the video memory, like this (without the quotes)
"linux mem=xxxM" where xxx is changed to equal the amount of ram availabel to
the system after subtracting for video ram. so if I had 128 meg ram, but had
shared 16 megs with the video, I would type "linux mem=112M"

2002-09-23 Thread Chris Edwards

Mr. Brinkman,

Thank you for your suggestion. For whatever reason, the icon is no
longer appearing ... and I haven't even had a chance to try your
solution. I will file it for future reference.

I had been doing a lot of mucking about to get my harddrive, floppy,
zip,and cdrom icons to appear as miniature representations vice blue
folders when placed as links in a child panel of the kicker. I also have
a quick browse folder of the /mnt directory but the devices will only
show up as blue folders.

That's OK though. It was just that irratating reappearing zip icon that
was driving me crazy.

Sincerely,
Chris Edwards

Wasn't that fun? :-)

Have a look in /usr/src and see what's in there. Two easy ways to do this; the
quick browser from the "K" menu (if you use KDE) will display if there's any
directories at that location or you can do ls /usr/src in a terminal.
It's where the source should have gone on install. If it's not there someone
can almost certainly help you figure out why the devil not.

BTW I just checked and the kernel-source-2.4.18-8.1 rpm in the update
directory at sunet shows as 32.8 MB when I check it. I also looked through
the SRPMS and the RPMS directories and I can't find anything bigger than that
for an 8.2 kernel. In other words I haven't a flippin' clue why it shows as
the size shown unless the software manager is reading the size of a
decompressed file maybe. Anything is possible I suppose. The 137 MB sounds
about right for the package to be honest, so since you didn't have source
installed before let the software manager deal. There's nothing installed to
break, is there?

I told you I was a gnubie, didn't I? ;-)

But upon further consideration, and bearing in mind that
I will often want to mix and match file images from differing
sources it is best to convert all my source image files
to the same file format for ease of processing because
when it comes to it, the command line is going to get awfully
complicated if I have to start allowing for more than one
file format. So upon further consideration it is best
while my current camera, epsilon1.3( a cheapie I can afford to
drop and break if necessary) is not supported in linux, even
as a mass storage device, and I must resort to copying across
from W2K, to get things organised by converting everything
there and then to a single(lowercase ) standard.

So currently

cd direcory sources,in a shell, and this works,
for i in *
do
mv "$i" "`echo "$i" | tr A-Z a-z`"
done

but ,
$ for i in *; do mv "$i" "`echo "$i" | tr A-Z a-z`"; done
does not , it doesn't like the "do" bit in one line.

I haven't yet tried the perl bash script, would be nice to get that
to work.

I want to get out of X and to a text login so I can install a new kernel.
When I ctrl>alt>backspace, I get my login box, and don't know how to get to a command
prompt. I guess what I am needing is to know how to get to a runlevel 3, temporarily??

That should be a dumb enough question for now. ;-)
(Imagine ME trying to install a kernel.)

TIA.

Can't answer this, but I can add a bit that might spark inspiration in
someone more knowledgeable. My printer is a DJ 990, so should be identical
to yours (940 is, I believe somewhat slower and without the duplexer, but
otherwise identical). I have printing from a browser, but no control.

Printing from every browser I have tried does not allow me access to any of
my setup printers. It specifies PostScript/Default, shows a dropdown box,
but that has no other entries in. This seems to be the setting for the
default printer, without any possibility of changing any properties/settings.

Hope someone can use this to come up with an answer for you

John,

montage will work with names with caps. If you are doing a directory, just
use *.JPG instead of *.jpg.

I remeber in about 1996 or 7 (maybe 98) S3 had a program for resellers and
repair centers that advertised that S3 would not question and would
automatically give an RMA number and a new (equal memory, different chipset)
videocard for any virge based card as an effort to be rid of this card. the
flyer I saw about it came from a distributor (I think it was Merisol) that
had the "headline" "help us purge the Virge".

OK I think I unserstand.
Let me run my understanding past you.
If I copy the perl script below into a text file and place in somewhere
like /usr/bin/ or /usr/local/bin,
and then run some command to initiate it ,

Then CD to directory sources in a shell,
and type something ( ? )
this script could be run and hey presto,
all done.Yes ?

because if so this would be very handy.

Great things, it works, here is my effort,
# cd /mnt/ext2-vol6/downloads2/digitalcam/set00

set002]# !/bin/bash
bash: !/bin/bash: event not found
no, that's wrong, lets try,

set002]# for i in *
> do
> mv "$i" "`echo "$i" | tr A-Z a-z`"
> done
set002]#

one slight question though,in your example:-
for i in *
do
mv "$i" "`echo "$i" | tr A-Z a-z`",
this is how it came to me,

can this be one line , something like this,
for i in * mv "$i" "`echo "$i" | tr A-Z a-z`",

I've run out of files to test it on for now.
very useful command I shall keep this one.

rename is also a supported method in perl as well... so
instead of using system() in perl scripts, you can just use rename.

I've got two possible solutions. The first is a Perl script I found
somewhere

the
'rename' command, which is part of the util-linux Mandrake package (type
'man
rename' for details).

They are both great browsers. Galeon is generally considered to be faster
than Mozilla, but IMO Opera is faster even than Galeon, and has a smaller
memory footprint and will work better in low end machines.
(This is just my opinion remember)

However.. They both have their limitations. Galeon is possibly better at
rendering pages with 'Internet Explorer' javascript on them. But on the other
hand recent builds of Galeon (I am using 1.2.5) have been a little unstable
and seem to crash a lot.

It really comes down to which browser suits you best since their speed is
similar.
At the moment I think Opera's feature set is still better (just) . I like the

'mouse gestures' (galeon has them too but they do not work as well),
'tabbed windows'(Galeon has tabbed windows too, but they have to be all the
same size)

BTW: You mention galeon 1.03 That is a bit out of date, and I do not think it
has either of these features.

Or for those who prefer GUIs
KDE Menu>Applications>Archiving>Compression>Ark
Select New Pick file name with .zip extension

Drag and drop files into the window.

Naturally the zip RPM has to be installed for it to work.

If you prefer there is also Gnuzip.

RE: [newbie] File conversion

2002-09-23 Thread Tony S. Sykes

It works fine on my 8.2, try using `ls` instead of * (Use the single
quote from the key next to the one).

Here is some of my first efforts,
]# cd /mnt/ext2-vol6/downloads2/digitalcam/set002

set002]# $ for i in *; do mv "$i" "`echo "$i" | tr A-Z a-z`"; done;
bash: syntax error near unexpected token `do'

set002]# $ for i in *; do mv "$i" "`echo "$i" | tr A-Z a-z`";
bash: syntax error near unexpected token `do'

set002]# $ for i in *; mv "$i" "`echo "$i" | tr A-Z a-z`"; done;bash:
syntax error near unexpected token `;'

set002]# $ for i in * do mv "$i" "`echo "$i" | tr A-Z a-z`"; done;
bash: syntax error near unexpected token `;'

As a bash script newbie I'm obviously doing something
quite wrong here. Any idea what it is, as I think this
will work when I learn how to prpoperly execute it.
Incidentally, I note there is a pipe so it's a two
part operation inwhich the standard output of the first part is fed
directly into the standard input of the second
element.
