Have you tried disconnecting the desktop box and placing the connector
into the laptop? If so, does the slowness follow to the laptop? If
not, what is the difference in the NICs used--10/100? Are you sure you
are using the best match in drivers for the NIC in the desktop machine?

Ethernet? Cat 5 cable? or you are using BNC connector? If so, what is
the length of the cable run from the router (or hub) to the destop box?
Is each box plugged into a port on the router, or are they plugged into
a hub, which is plugged into the router?

Route table? DNS service? Netmask? Gateway IP the same or both
desktop and laptop? Is your local network set up on the entire class C
or is it subnetted? Are your base IP and your broadcast IP totally free
or does one or the other share an IP with the router or a box? (no
router or box on xxx.xxx.xxx.0 [presuming the subsnet begins with .0 and
whatever IP you are using for broadcast])--and does the subnet mask
match or did you use 255.255.255.0? Did you accidently put two boxes on
the same IP?

I'll do the best I can to assist, but I need information, information
and more information. One inconsistency can hose connectivity, or just
slow it down greatly.

Thanks Steve.
Did not know about tabbing. And the 'other' tab in common preferences was
hidden. The default entry "mozilla -remote 'openURL(%s,raise)'" corrupts the

I have four machines on my home network: a routing machine, and
three boxes. When I download from the Internet to my laptop, it's
as fast as my cable service: 180KB/sec. When I download to
my desktop, it's 4.5KB/sec, and stalls frequently. I thought it was
a fluke. So when I FTPed from the laptop to my desktop--yes, across my
network--it's 4.5K and stall frequently.

There's obviously something _seriously_ wrong with my desktop, but
what could it be? Both it and my laptop are running 9.0. I tried
rebooting, but it made no difference.

you don't mention how much ram you have...

if you have 32 mb, try mdk7.2, it was long a fav of mine..

if less then 32, try 7.0 or something even earlier, (civilme said something
about a 5.x version that was available for download online, (check the
archives), it was made to run on 486's, so it should fly on your system.

9.0 will be fairly slow on a 133, (I know, I have it on a couple of 233mmx's
and its slowish on them for X stuff).

2002-11-02 Thread Mark
I am thinking of buying a portable MD player Sony MZN707 and was
wondering if it will work in mandrake 9?

I had a look at the Iriver IFP-180 128 MP3 player but it seems it will
not work under linux and the company does not intend to support linux.
So that rules it out.

Are there any info sites which specifically deal with portable devices
such as these in linux?

I am presuming that the usb port will read device when connected but is
there any problems recording data or transfering the data I should be
aware of?

Thanks

[newbie] M9.0 , two more problems

2002-11-02 Thread John Richard Smith
Mandrake 9.0

I've been configuring printers all day. There are 4 possible drivers, I
have 2
working quite well, 1 works but has a serious problem, the 4th not at all.

The driver that works but has problems is:-

Lexmark Z53 CUPS+GIMP-print-v4.2.2
using that difficult to use "Adjust margins+offsetsof printed page"
programme, with settings,

ML=1.0 ins.
MB=0.5 ins.
MT=0.5 ins.
MR=0.5 ins
X=10
Y=110

the page is centered right enough, but the headers and footers
of any test page are cut off.

I have in kde control center - system - printing manager
image set at 100% of page,
with margins
T0.988 cm
B0.988 cm
L2.505 cm
R0.988 cm

I don't think these settings should chop the headers and footers off
but something does when I use kword to send a test page to printer,
and the same test page in the other 2 working drivers print fine, so
it has to be either something to do with the driver itself or some setting
in the spooling I haven't got right. This driver is worth getting set
up as it worksquite well with Z53 printer in past experience.

I've run out of ideas

Help appreciated

John

That capital V is incorrect, it should be -v for "verbose." Also 'speed=0'
isn't going to do a thing you want. You'll have to change that to a value of
1,2,3 or4 to fit the capabilities of the Mitsumi. It actually won't burn
anything at zero ya know. As far as writing a raw file from a mount directory
goes I've never tried it. RAW is supposed to be one of the supported formats
but I'll have to find what flags to use with it. I'll get back to you on
that.

Have you neglected your daily caffeine intake? "speed=0"??? ;)

Because you gave it conflicting commands.

Conflict because it's still trying to execute the previous command maybe?

> [root@localhost malcolm]# ##What on earth is /dev/pg3, I have no

Interesting question here. I'm on a research run looking for a reason for
this. I'll let you know when I find something unless one of the people that
_know_ what the devil they're about are willing to throw us a bone? It would
help (probably) to check /etc/fstab to see whether it's recognized as a valid
drive. Also check /etc/mtab (mount table) and /etc/lilo.conf. Maybe post
those here? If you have posted them in the past sorry, I'll have to read
through the whole thread again to be sure I don't duplicate previous efforts.

It almost seems the scsi emulation module (or kernel driver, I can never
remember which it is) isn't loading, or the cd-rw can't be mounted any
longer; maybe because of of the conflicting command you used. If that's the
case a reboot may take care of it. Or is it just displaying all of this
'cause you told it to burn at zero burn speed? If so it may be that simply
logging out and back in may do it. Honest Malcolm, I ain't givin' you a hard
time about that speed=0 thing!

Much. :-)

I have /boot, and /root mounted ext3 but the rest of my drives and partitions
are XFS. Shouldn't make a difference since ext3 is mostly journalling and a
few other goodies tacked onto ext2 (linux native) anyway. I don't think it
would make a difference anyway.

We can correspond here or via off list e-mail or by snail mail all you like
and thank you, but recompense isn't being sought, nor would it be accepted in
any event Malcom. I am not an expert at anything more technical than twisting
words into funny patterns; and refuse to recognise any such characterization
of myself. If I have ever helped anyone my only request would be that the
beneficiary pass it on in the same spirit it's offered. Free; and happily so.
Free advice is worth what you pay for it most times.

Your version of sylpheed is pretty old--can you upgrade? You can get 0.8.3
from rpmfind. IIRC, there were problems with the address book in 0.7.x.

Aliases work fine for me. Just type the alias and hit the tab key and it
will auto complete for you. If you have more than one alias that begins
with the same characters, tabbing will give you a drop down list to choose
from. So, if I have aliases marka, markb, and markc, typing mark and then
hitting tab will bring up a drop down menu including all three marks.
Pretty handy.

As for the browser, Configuration > Common Preferences > Other and type
the path to the browser you want to use, or choose a common one from the
drop-down menu (in Claws 0.8.3).

[root@localhost malcolm]# ##What on earth is /dev/pg3, I have no
/dev/pg files!

Before I reinstall Mandrake 9.0 to get back where I was, I am wondering
if my file system which is ext3 may make a difference. Is that your
system?

I am grateful for your help, this is driving me crazy and pleased to
recompense you for your trouble; after all I would have to pay with
MandrakeExpert and this I will do for you. Please let me know your

The file:/usr/doc/cdrdao-1.1.6/README was not installed on my system.

You need to install the pcmcia_cs and wireless-tools RPMS from your CDs
Then next time you reboot yor pcmcia sockets should be detected and become active. You
will hear two beeps from your computer when the pcmcia slots are enabled. Two beeps of
different tone means your oricoco card was detected OK. Two beeps of same tone means
it was not.

Go through the Mandrake Control Centre Networking wizard. It should have detected your
card and installed the 'wvlan_cs' driver. In the wizard you can set the wireless
parameters (encryption key rate etc) after you complete the wizard with OK, DO NOT
exit the GUI with OK. A bug means that it will write your old configuration back
again. You must exit the GUI with 'Cancel'

Your card should now be working. If it is not it is most likely a problem with
encryption key or essid (Note ASCII encryption keys have to be entered in the format
s:key_name )
You can use the command 'iwconfig eth0' in a root terminal window to set up the
wireless card by hand, and 'man iwconfig' will give you all the parameters.

Top of my mandrake 9.1 wishlist would be a decent

of ink cartridges + paper, programme and takes all

[newbie] Sylpheed again

2002-11-02 Thread Len Lawrence
Getting used to Sylpheed now. It still seems a bit awkward compared with the
facility of pine and there is one feature (from pine) which I really miss; the
ability to double-click on a web link and spawn a browser to access it. In
sylpheed the links come up in green, but nothing happens when you click or
double-click on them, and there does not seem to be any way to define a default
browser in the configuration menu. Perhaps somebody knows a way? The
Help option does not - probably still to be written.

Using version 0.7.3 under Mandrake 8.2.

When I tried to send this using the alias "newbie" from the address book
sylpheed failed to translate to [EMAIL PROTECTED] but wrote
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Pine does alias translation without a problem,
so I am being forced to revert to pine.

Then I burned the three files and restart my computer with the CD that has the first Mandrake Linux file and guess what?... My computer didn’t boot from the CD. I know that my computer can boot from a CD, but it doesn’t want to boot from a CD that has an ISO file.

So, what do I have to do?

The file has the name: Mandrake90-cd1-inst.i586.iso

Looks like you wrote the iso file to CD instead of writing the
contents of the iso file to disc. I'm guessing you used a windblows
programme like easy CD writer, or nero. You have to make sure
you write the iso file in the correct manner to disc.

What do I have to do? Do I have to change the name? Do I have to change the extension? Do I have to buy a new computer? ☺

Well, that’s the first question, now the second one.

I have a HD with the following partition:

C:\ File System: FAT32 Size: 15.5 GB Free Space: 6.86 GB
D:\ File System: NTFSSize: 40.2 GB Free Space: 19.8 GB

OK, that is just one hard disk with two partitions :). I've read somewhere that I can't do a new partition in a NTFS file system because I'm going to loose all my information :( and I really don't want this to happen.

So, can I do a partition JUST in the C:\ partition? I really don't understand how partitions work, but if I can do a new partition in the C:\ partition... Do I have enough space (Free Space: 6.68 GB) to do a partition for Mandrake?

Well, that is all; I hope I can do a new partition, because I will not format my computer. I read that there is a program called Partition Magic... does this program really works? Once again I will not format my computer, not because I don't want, but because I can't... My computer is the server of my house; there are 5 more computers connected to it. Nobody here knows how to set up a server, so if I have to format my computer everybody here will hate me, and will start making plans of how to kill me :).

OK, CYA guys and TIA.

Antonio R.

If you have Partition Magic , fine, PM can repartition without loss of data
on either fat32 , ntfs or any other file sytem. If not , mandrake's
diskdrake
can repartition vfat(fat32) partitions but not ntfs.

looks to me as though you created the dual boot windblows OS's, what
partition tools did you use ?

Also you have a something like 80gig hard drive, why not partition it
up into some usful chunks, then use those spare partitions as usful
storage partitions, or change the use to anything you want, it seems
pointless to have C: of 15gigs, and a D: of 40gigs, if these contain
as I assume, winblows OS's then 5gigs each would be ample. So
if you have Partition Magic , start making use of it.

"To start building right away (on UNIX): type "./configure" in the

This confuses me as it doesn't explain in any depth what one is supposed to
do.

Can anyone assist me?

Regards
budest

You downloaded a tar ball and if you have successfully decompressed and
detarred
it you ought to be left with a Python2.2.2 file .
Your system needs a compiler, these will usually be on your CD's 1-3
and go by various versions beginning gcc , you need to have this installed.
Provided that you gcc compiler is the correct version and it is installed
you merely follow the commands listed above in a bash shell terminal, best
to do it as root. So,
[root@localhost root]#cd directory sources

[root@localhost python2.2.2]#./configure

this command makes the compiler look at all your computer setup
and look to see what is there and what is not there.Watch closely
the error messages, to help me I divert the error messages, like
this
[root@localhost python2.2.2]#./configure 2> /roor/Desktop/errorlog1

then,

[root@localhost python2.2.2]#make

this command attempts to build the executable, special watch should
be made to see what fails, indeed to help me I divert error messages
like this
[root@localhost python2.2.2]#make 2> /root/Desktop/errorlog2

because I'm not very experienced at judging what is an error message
and what is not. Then depending on what happens here you proceed to
the install,

[root@localhost python2.2.2]make install

In your info above I'm not sure what ./python does , looks like
you replace ./configure with ./python, but just experiment, it will either
work or it will not, you cannot do too much harm.
Be warned , once installed tar balls don't usually come with any
automatic means of removal. So if possible look for rpm versions
of the same programme as these are easy to remove.Take
a look at www.rpmfind.net to see if there are any available
in thecorrect versions, I happen to know that there are many
Python versions there, indeed you should also checkout your
mandrake CD's 1-3 because you almost certainly have a
good Python choices there as well.
So you are interested in learning python scripting then ?

The ISO file is not burned to a CD the same way you would a data or
music file. In your burning software, you will need to find the option
"burn from ISO" (or something similar) and then point the software to
each ISO file (one at a time). When burned as an ISO (file type set to
ISO 9660, if there are other choices), the first CD should boot.

Partition Magic will resize an NTFS partition without losing data,
provided that you have defragmented the drive first and that the new
partition is put at the end of the drive, AFTER the resized NTFS
partition. A word of caution: The remaining NTFS partition must be
larger than the total amount of data stored on the original partition
plus 25%. To operate properly, an NTFS partition that also contains the
OS needs to have a minumum overhead of 25% to accommodate page-filing
(virtual memory/swap).(Example: if you have 20GB used on an NTFS
partition, then the resized partition must be a minimum of 25GB for the
OS to operate properly.)

I used Partition Magic 7.x quite sucessfully when I set up an XP and
Mandrake dual boot machine.

You did not tell us how you plan to use Mandrake (replacement server;
just something to play with to see if you want to switch to it; a way to
learn a new OS so it's difficult to say how much disk space would
be adequate for your purpose. However, linux will read, but not write
(safely) to an NTFS partition, so keep in mind that you need the FAT32
partition to hold data to be used by both OSes.

Re: [newbie] rsync..

2002-11-02 Thread bascule
hmmm, off the top of my head (you have been warned!)

rsync -av ::module/path/to/filename /path/to/local/directory/
will put 'filename' in 'directory'
make sure that the partial file you already have is named the same as that you
are rsyncing from, remove any .part or whatever,

if you do:
rsync ::
you will be shown a list of modules,

rsync ::modulename/
will show the contents of that module and so on, you can keep adding to:
rsync ::modulename/path/
to discover what you will need to put in the example i gave at the top,

rsync -avr ::module/path/to/files/ /local/path/
will put all the files in directory 'files' into the local drectory 'path',
notice the use of leading /'s compared to rsyncing just one file

there are lots of rsync options, '-a' substitutes for a whole raft of these
and essentially means 'archive', '-v' means verbose, and '-r' will recurse
down into subdirectories if you need to do this, else ignore it
verbose is useful because you will see if it is rsyncing your file or not

[newbie] Two questions:

2002-11-02 Thread Antonio R.
Hi again:

OK, I’ve downloaded the ISO files from one of the mirrors of the Mandrake Linux
site, and I checked the three files with the md5sum file and everything is OK. Then I
burned the three files and restart my computer with the CD that has the first Mandrake
Linux file and guess what?... My computer didn’t boot from the CD. I know that my
computer can boot from a CD, but it doesn’t want to boot from a CD that has an ISO
file.

So, what do I have to do?

The file has the name: Mandrake90-cd1-inst.i586.iso

What do I have to do? Do I have to change the name? Do I have to change the extension?
Do I have to buy a new computer? ☺

Well, that’s the first question, now the second one.

I have a HD with the following partition:

C:\ File System: FAT32 Size: 15.5 GB Free Space: 6.86 GB
D:\ File System: NTFSSize: 40.2 GB Free Space: 19.8 GB

OK, that is just one hard disk with two partitions :). I've read somewhere that I
can't do a new partition in a NTFS file system because I'm going to loose all my
information :( and I really don't want this to happen.

So, can I do a partition JUST in the C:\ partition? I really don't understand how
partitions work, but if I can do a new partition in the C:\ partition... Do I have
enough space (Free Space: 6.68 GB) to do a partition for Mandrake?

Well, that is all; I hope I can do a new partition, because I will not format my
computer. I read that there is a program called Partition Magic... does this program
really works? Once again I will not format my computer, not because I don't want, but
because I can't... My computer is the server of my house; there are 5 more computers
connected to it. Nobody here knows how to set up a server, so if I have to format my
computer everybody here will hate me, and will start making plans of how to kill me :).

OK, CYA guys and TIA.

sorry bjc2000sp printer RE: [newbie] printer problem

2002-11-02 Thread Eric Richards
How come when you set up your printer, it does a perfect test page,

But when you go to print a page from a standard text page it prints nothing
but jumbled rubbish

I tried all three print options still the same,

Also I did a buffer clean out with
lpq List jobs in the print queue.
lprm [job number] Remove job from printer queue.
lprm -a or lprm Remove all jobs from printer queue.

but that did not work either.

The attachment is harmless as it is added as a footer by the MandrakeSoft mail
server. Just ignore them, they say the same thing as the footer you see on
any email from the list.
