Re: SV: [newbie] imac install
o.kwhen you test and the screen goes black...it obviously isn't a good setting you might try either a lower settingor if you are in a window that offers choices of Hz...you might try to find the correct setting for your CRT and card. Does the install offer you a default setting, such as 800 X 600? It's been a while and I don't remember for sure, but I think that I was able to set up the higher res screen on a Purple DV iMac, but was only able to set up 800 X 600 on a Strawberry iMac. Apple not only changes components with new models (sometimes), but also have been known to change in the middle of a model run. I don't have either iMac handy right now, so I can't check it out for a ctl+alt+delete, although that combination usually works on a PC. Another combination that works on a PC is ctl+alt+F2 to get a new console window which should allow you to log in and fix problems you may have accidentally created. That said...even if it works on an iMac, I don't believe it is an option during the OS installonly after you have it up and running. In other words you need to upgrade libglade to at least libglade-2.0.0-xxx.rpm or greater. You can find them at http://www.rpmfind.net/ and type in a search for each package and download them as rpms. Then all you have to do is go into the file you downloaded to and left click on the rpm file and it will begin the install for you. Try it and see if you have any other questions. The rpm files at rpmfind.net are best for the Mandrake-Linux OS if they have mdk in their name and show as "Mandrake" rpm's. [newbie] OpenOffice dies upon opening
OpenOffice.org 1.0 worked fine on my Mandrake 8.1 installation. But now that I have moved to 8.2 (clean install), OO usually dies while opening. OO is open for perhaps a second and shuts itself down. No message of any kind appears in the terminal window I launch it from, I am simply returned to the prompt. ps ax afterward shows no lingering traces of OO, so at least it shuts down cleanly. This happens perhaps 75% of the time I try to open any component of OO. The other 25% of the time OO remains open and works normally. The behavior is the same if opened from a menu vs. a terminal window, and regardless of WM used, user, or previously running apps or daemons. Clue #1: When I run the OO repair tool (/opt/OpenOffice.org1.0/program/setup as user and select "repair"), that user does not suffer this problem for a day or so. Clue #2: Before I installed OO on 8.2, I installed StarOffice 6.0 from the rpm on the Power Pack. I never could get StarOffice to work, so I uninstalled the rpm prior to installing OO. Any ideas of what I should be looking at to fix this? I'd rather not rerun setup every day from now on. -- Warren Post Santa Rosa de Copán, Honduras http://www.srcopan.vze.com/ Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] compile attempt
Okay, I'm going to show my extreme newbie-ness. :) I'm attempting to install the newest version of GnomeICU (0.98.126). I currently run version 0.98.3. When I execute the ./configure script, I get the following result: configure: error: Library requirements (libglade-2.0 >= 2.0.0 libgnomeui-2.0 >= 2.0.0 gnet >= 1.1.3 libxml-2.0 >= 2.4.7) not met; consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if your libraries are in a nonstandard prefix so pkg-config can find them. If I'm reading this correctly, I'm either missing a file (or several) or I need to add something to a 'PKG_CONFIG_PATH' somewhere. I have a very shaky grasp on this whole download/configure/make/install process and this is the first time I've made the attempt. Anne, I have dissabled supermount, due to the problems in 9.0, I did supermount -i disable and then my fstab file was changed in this way for the cdroms-cdwriter and floppy: /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom auto codepage=850,noauto,iocharset=iso8859-15,nosuid,ro,umask=0,user,nodev 0 0 /dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom2 auto codepage=850,noauto,iocharset=iso8859-15,nosuid,ro,umask=0,user,nodev 0 0 /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto codepage=850,sync,unhide,noauto,iocharset=iso8859-15,nosuid,umask=0,user,nodev 0 0 So I just copy the main contens of these lines; I don't know exactly the meaning of have in the same line auto and noauto, but my cdrom/cdrwriter and floppy run now fine. Thanks alot Erik. As a matter of fact, I did choose the imac monitor with the 1024x768 resolution during installation. I've also started my computer in text mode (I made a ROOT login). From text mode I used that program called something like xf86cfg. That program would let me choose resolution (I got two alternatives with the 1024x768 resolution)and after that I got a question if I want to test it or not. If I choose yes, the screen goes black again. Anyhow I'll try to do the stuff that you've written about below and maybe it will work. One thing that worries me is that every time I get the black screen I'm forced to use the power button to restart my computer since nothing else seems to work (does linux have something like ctrl-alt-del?). The result of restarting that way is that the system seems to find loads of problems at startup. HTH It must be around somewhere - I installed it from my Power Pack, but I can't remember where I found it. I've searched all 7 disks, and can't see it. It installed, though, so perhaps it's best to just fire up the installer and type in xmms-cdread, as I did. Anne Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? I and many other users set their mail clients to sort and view by thread. The mail agent does this using the mail ID- 001a01c298bd$52038b00$48382d44@racerpup from the initial post which is tagged to all mails sent as Reply. In windows, assuming your cd is E: the path is E:\Mandrake\RPMS\speedtouch-1.0-3mdk.i586.rpm (I'm back in windows now - so, going from memory) Think it installs in usr/share/doc/speedtouch and in usr/share/speedtouch It expands into several files including several text files with HowTo's etc. When I succesfully installed the Speedtouch USB in LM8.2 (long time ago) I thing it was necessary to remove my network card completely and only put it back after the Speedtouch is working. You also needed to put the mgmt.o file in as usr/share/speedtouch/mgmt.o Then entered ISP (bt) connection stuff (username etc. - I probably entered the bt prefix as with windows - i.e. mine is <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> - you are probably something other than hg11). I chose to 'connect at bootup' Rebooted and bingo - worked first time. Now the downer. Others tried this sequence but it didn't work for them. Wish you luck. Fuji Finepix runs fine using the usb-storage module. This is the way I configured a Fuji FinePix S602 to run under Mandrake 9.0 via usb A) Be sure you have the next modules loaded: usb usb-core usb-storage usb-scsi B) Create a dir to be monted: mkdir -m 777 /mnt/camera C) plugin (usb) the camera and: mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/camera And it should run, you will have the images in a directory inside /mnt/camera. When you finis, unplug the camera and umount /mnt/camera. Note: you can include the line: /dev/sda1 /mnt/camera auto, user, noauto, nosuid 0 0 In /etc/fstab to allow any user mount it. Charles is correct, never UPgrade, always INstall (-ivh). After the new kernel is installed, it should be a boot option, but the current kernel should be kept as the default till you've used the new one for a while without any issues. When/if you decide to make the new kernel the default, then make a bootdisk for it (not before). The best instructions for newbies for installing kernels is http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/install/index.html#ku Beginner's should read all four pages, including the trouble shooting section at the end before tryin to install a new kernel. IMO, the best method for compiling your own is to use Mandrake's source (eg, kernel-source-2.4.20-0.5mdk is the current one). One thing not stressed enough, first edit Makefile as suggested, backup .config and then you _must_ run 'make mrproper' as the first step. Hi Anthony, Did you ever get an answer to this question? I have updated to 3.0.5 and I only use rpm's. I asked about updating kde on the TWUUG list and got an answer. It might be in the archives. IIRC I downloaded all the applicable rpms into a directory and updated from there. It worked. I'm very tempted by a Fuji Finepix S304, but wonder about support under linux. It is not supported by gPhoto, but then maybe it doesn't need to be. If the disk was made from the old kernel then it no longer exists, i.e no img or anything else relating to that kernel will be found in /boot and the boot will fail when it cannot find said image. If a new kernel fails to boot then the chance are 99.9% that a boot disk made from that kernel will also fail with the same error as when directly booting the new kernel. [newbie] imac install
Hi! I'm a real newbie trying to install Mandrake on my iMac 500 DV SE. I've had alot of problems during installation but I'm getting close now. First the installation program couldn't partition the swap section and after trying to reinstall and format a couple of times i did succeed. Now everything seems ok and starting up the system works fine until the GUI is loaded, when everything turns black. I don't know what to do. I've tried to run the installation program but it won't let me make any "fine tuning". I'm forced to reformat and reinstall everytime I run the installation program. Any ideas, anyone? Re: [newbie] Using Samba With Linux Clients
Thanks to everyone for helpful the advice! As it turned out, my problem was both hardware and software config related. I had to publish the netbios name of the server in the smb.conf file (overlooked) and I had mistakenly connected two workstation patch cords on shared ports of my hub, negating the server when this particular workstation was running as well. Once these issues were resolved, my MDK 9 box had no problems seeing the shares. Oh, well...live and learn. :-) BTW, LinNeighborhood does work well! I am glad it was recommended in the listserv. I do have one question, though it probably is irreverent at this point... All workstations are statically addressed with synched, corresponding 'hosts' and 'lmhosts', as they need apply. Therefore, I do not use a WINS server, or any other names resolving server. Host.conf refers to 'bind' for lookup, if 'hosts' should fail. Bind is not installed or running. Should it be? Is it necessary in a small network where everyone knows who everyone is? Thanks for the help. I feel so-o-o-o-o much better having my little baby up and running! Re: [newbie] CD Read errors
Good luck! I often have trouble with those high speed CDs -- one of the symptoms is that I hear them sort of cycle (either on and off or from a low speed to a high speed) -- I suspect that sometimes the software expecting to get something from the CDROM times out while the drive is accelerating to "rated" speed. Anyway, I've taken to stocking up on 4X or 8X drives when I see them cheap ($5 or less) at computer shows. I gave up trying to recompile kernels to fix my problem - I gave Red Hat v8.0 a shot (I like Gnome anyway)... and voila, no problems with my P4B533-E motherboard. Works beautifully and runs well. The first version I installed was 3.0.1, rpm intalled by MK 9.0 cd rom. The rpm I use to upadate grip yesterday grip-3.0.3-1.i386.rpm. Should I have intalled the grip-3.0.3-1.src.rpm one ? [newbie] Fonts too big in KDE menus "HELP, this looks horrible"
HI guys, I just installed LM 9.0 and for some reason the fonts in KDE menus are huge. For exampel, if you right click and the pop up menu comes up, the fonts in this menu are huge. Also in konqueror "location, edit, View, go ..." are too large. I cant find the place where I can change this fonts. Changing the fonts in the "Configure Desktop" tool wont change these fonts. Please, if you can gieve me a hand, I will really appreciate it. Robert. __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. Re: [newbie] Red Hat rescues me
Same here. Although I am more of a KDE fan and RH has butchered it in 8.0 quite a bit. Mandrake simply refused to recongnize IDE drives on my new ABIT-BD-711 motherboard. RH8 works fine. --- Alexander Rayborn <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > I hate to say it, but Mandrake 9.0 lost this battle. > I gave up trying > to recompile kernels to fix my problem - I gave Red > Hat v8.0 a shot (I > like Gnome anyway)... and voila, no problems with my > P4B533-E > motherboard.
