On Qui 09 Jan 2003 15:40, Anne Wilson wrote:(down there!) Just another view. From a Brazilian English Teacher. English is a very easy language when compared to other Indo-European Language! Of course, we have the multiple meaning set to a single word but, that happens on other languages as well maybe not THAT much. Portuguese, German and Languages from the former Soviet Union have a quite complex grammar when compared to English. But from my professional experience, as Human Resouces Officer, British people DO learn Portuguese much faster than Brazilian people take to LEARN English. Unfortunately, I haven't see a single american learning Portuguese faster than British people. Talking about cultures Do you know any other country with such a multi-racial mix as Brazil? In the USA, they live together but, apartthey don't mix like here! This pluri-cultural background makes it easy for us to relate and learn any other culture. First, if you installed any version of freetype2 other than what came with Mandrake, you will need to uninstall it and reinstall the original. It seems that the later versions of freetype2 are broken. If that's not the case (or even if it is), you might try editing /etc/openoffice/openoffice.conf and change the line that UI_FONT="AUTO" to something like UI_FONT="Verdana" or something like that. You may also have to change the FONT_SCALING setting, too. If the UI_FONT isn't set to "AUTO", you might try setting it as such. If neither of those work, you might check out www.ooodocs.org and see if anyone there can help. Joeb Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
Re: [newbie] no OpenOffice.org fonts on menus (at all)
1. Get to a shell, become root, and type the following... /etc/openoffice/openoffice.conf 2. Edit the UI_FONT="AUTO" replace "AUTO" with "Arial" or whatever other font you have and want to use. 3. Save, close, and open OOOWriter. You should have menus. [newbie] Printing - how quaint!
Just wanted to relay this experience to y'all as it made me so warm and fuzzy inside... Mate of mine gave me an HP Deskjet 656c USB printer in lieu of some work that got done for him...SO, being that the wife-unit already has a Canon BJC-265SP on her boxen, and I've got a useless LexMark dj 5000 sitting and collecting dust and Christmas beetles, and I HATE printing via Samba to her boxen, I just plugged in the little USB plug, put some paper in the nice new printer, checked the new ink carts, powered on the little bugger...listened to the nice whirs and clicks, fired up Webmin, went to hardware, chose printers, added the printer pretty-as-you-please, saved the configuration, then fired up the KDE Control Panel, went to SYSTEM \ PRINTER ADMINISTRATION, set the newly setup printer as USER DEFAULT, clicked TEST PRINTER and WHAM! Printing! - all told - 3 minutes. No disks, drivers, swearing and cursing, consulting cryptic usenet groups - nada. Shit - WindowsXP/2k have never been THAT nice... -- Fri Jan 10 15:45:00 EST 2003 3:45pm up 1 day, 5:27, 5 users, load average: 0.80, 0.82, 0.54 -- |____ | kuhn media australia| | / ,, /| |'-. | http://kma.0catch.com | | .\__/ || | | |=| | _ / `._ \|_|_.-' | stephen kuhn| | | / \__.`=._) (_ | email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] | | |/ ._/ |"| | email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]| | |'. `\ | | |icq: 5483808 | | ;"""/ / | | | | | smk ) /_/| |.---.| | mobile: 0410-728-389| | ' `-`' " " | Berkeley, New South Wales, AU | -- * linux user:267497 * RH 7.3+ * PC/Mac/Linux/Networking/Consulting -- Without facts, the decision cannot be made logically. Re: [newbie] OpenOffice 1.0.1 menu items gone
On Friday 10 January 2003 04:02, Chad wrote: > I've searched with Google and through the Newbie/Expert archives for this, > but to no avail. OK this is seemingly starting to be a FAQ. this problem appears whenever you update your QT/XFT/Freetype libs. OO cannot work properly with the newer versions. This results in text sized 8pt and lower not to be rendered in OpenOffice. the menus/toolbars/dialogs in OO are all size 8, so there ya go. This is a workaround to make the fonts come back, but it may or may not work for you. Feel free to try it out. 1) Open up oowriter 2) Go, in the main menu (that would be the one containing File, Edit and so on), to the 6th menu. 3) Select the last option in that menu. 4) a small window will pop up, containing a column of "+" signs on the left. Those are the "trees" or sections for the different options in OO. 5) Expand the first tree by clicking on the "+" at the top. (this may already be open and you would see a "-" at the top. If so, proceed.) 6) You will now see the "branches" of that first tree. Select the 9th branch. 7) you will now see, on the right hand of this window, a checkbox at the top, below the checkbox you will see two dropdown listboxes, and a big listbox taking up the rest of the space. at the right of the two drop-down listboxes, you will see two buttons, one with a tick, and the other one with a cross on them. 8)The bis listbox has one line in it (of course you cannot read it). But you can see two empty squares on that line. Select this line by clicking on it. 9) the empty sqares un that line are checkboxes. Check them both. 10)also check the first checkbox at the top of this pane. 11) Go to the drop-down listbox on the right (the one closer to the buttons with the tick and the cross) and type the word Lucida on it. 12) Click the button with the green tick. 13) below the big listbox there are four big buttons. Click the first one (the one at the left). 14) Cross your fingers. HTH Damian Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

In all honesty, I really hate the Mandrake menus - last install I did, I spent nearly two hours going through the menus for KDE, Gnome2, Enlightenment and WindowMaker to put them the way **I** like 'em - short, simple and to the point. Granted that a "noob" would want to see something more "Windows-ish", but for me, I can't stand all that clutter and wasted entry space. Even moreso, when I'm "really being productive" I sometimes do not use a window manager at all - nada - nothing. At those times I fire up Openwindows - lean, mean and ready for biz...and sometimes even less - I don't use a graphical system at all - just CTL-ALT-F1 through F10 - that gives me enough terms to live with... ...but overall, "noobs" like heaps of completely unnecessary and unwanted menu entries to "oogle" at - until they find Xterm and find out what doing "ls -CFa /usr/bin" is like - then "menus be damned" - (g). Once I get my voice recognition stuff working here, I might just chuck away the keyboard and mse altogether - save a few extra address spaces and IRQ's to use for something better - like a USB self-powered tie-clasp temperature monitor, or a self-monitoring electronic goldfish bowl... -- Fri Jan 10 15:20:01 EST 2003 3:20pm up 1 day, 5:02, 5 users, load average: 0.24, 0.30, 0.39 -- |____ | kuhn media australia| | / ,, /| |'-. | http://kma.0catch.com | | .\__/ || | | |=| | _ / `._ \|_|_.-' | stephen kuhn| | | / \__.`=._) (_ | email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] | | |/ ._/ |"| | email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]| | |'. `\ | | |icq: 5483808 | | ;"""/ / | | | | | smk ) /_/| |.---.| | mobile: 0410-728-389| | ' `-`' " " | Berkeley, New South Wales, AU | -- * linux user:267497 * RH 7.3+ * PC/Mac/Linux/Networking/Consulting -- 4.2 BSD UNIX #57: Sun Jun 1 23:02:07 EDT 1986 You swing at the Sun. [newbie] OpenOffice 1.0.1 menu items gone
I've searched with Google and through the Newbie/Expert archives for this, but to no avail. On my parents stock LM 9.0 install, OpenOffice installed just fine and ran great for a while. Now, when any user logs in at the desktop and starts up any OO application, the "File", "Edit", "Format", etc. menus are all gone. There is a space for them and the drop down menus still work, there are just no words in them. It's tough to explain, so I took a screenshot with Gimp and posted it on my web site here: http://dilbert.dnsalias.com/graphix/oo_menu_gone.jpg Now, I also use VNC to admin it remotely (from my bedroom to the family room). When I start a VNC server (vncserver :5 -geometry 1024x768 -depth 16) and access the machine that way, I can start OO and the menus display fine. The only difference that I see is when using VNC, it's using VNC's X11 server instead of XFree86. The resolution is also different. My parents use 800x600, depth 16. The things that I have tried are as follows: 1. When the problem first appeared, I shut down OO, logged out, restarted the X server, logged back in 2. Tried restarting the dm service 3. Tried removing the .openoffice directory from users home dir, then running OO 4. Tried rebooting the PC (years worth of Windows training taking over) 5. Tried removing the whole OO package, rebooting, re-installing None of the above have worked thus far. I have some more ideas to try, but they are fairly in-depth. No other application has this problem. I'm about ready to wipe & re-install. I have /home separate, so it won't be a real big deal. Just the time to do it. I would however like to find a solution to the problem. I hate giving up and doing a re-install. I have been performing weekly updates through MDK Update. Any bug fixes, security patches & normal upgrades I automatically download. One of those might have been the culprit. The specs on the machine are: Compaq Deskpro, 233 MHz, 192 MB, 3.2 GB, S3 Trio 64V2/DX (built-in) and Intel 82559 Ethernet (built-in). If anybody needs any other hardware specs, let me know. Anybody run into something like this before? Any solutions would be greatly appreciated. Chad Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
RE: [newbie] Linux Hardware Database
I visited the zdnet hardware database at http://lhd.zdnet.com/ around Christmas and found that it had been hacked. Instead of the very helpful database (which I referred to a lot), there was a pic of a mostly nekkid lady plus the usual "w3 r l33t h@x0rz" language below it. Afterwards, the site seemed to go back and forth for a while between being completely down and being just a blank page, and now seems to be just plain gone. If the site was actually hosted on a MS server then perhaps it was just poetic justice, but if it was a Linux server... :( Try http://www.linuxhardware.org/. Content is a little lean right now, but hopefully it will get better. And of course Mandrake, Redhat, and Suse each maintain their own hardware compatability lists. I tried it back when I had Mandrake 8.2, and at first it was ok, till I noticed it completely wiped out the stock menu entries for Gnome. Lemme say few & join the OT'ers, Among En, Tr (Turkish), Ge, and Fr, EN grammer is easiest, than TR-GE-FR (for the sake of argument: you don't have to know grammer well to speak any language, remember lil' kids learning mother tounge?) EN vocabulary is bggest to learn. (the only bad point for EN when learning, IMHO) EN has fewest irregularities almost none, comparing the other three. EN sentence structure is easiest to speak, eg. changing musicality and/or tone make a normal sentence a well understandable question sentence. EN speaking has lotsa shotcuts like gonna gotta, oughta, woulda. Am EN speaking ppl is more understandable than En EN or Au EN speakers on the street at least to me, eg. a scottish sounds likes a chinese to me. (We have BBC and CNN chn's also others here in Turkey) In US and AU people don't need to learn other languages much, comparing other countries due to almost isolated borders except Mexico. EN is most widely&effectively speaking language of the world, Chinese is another case. My conclusion: If you learn enough EN vocabulary and learn how to pronounce them understandably, you are on your way in EN, rest is depends on how much time you spent for. Bests. Now, on the other hand, many people in the USA ALSO take a few years of a foreign language, but not until they are 16-20ish, and the older you get, the harder it is to learn a new language. Now.. even so, the fact that we don't USE foreign languages very often here is, in itself, contributory to us not speaking many languages. Re: U.S. politics in Linux? Was: Re: [Fwd: Re: [newbie] Which is better:KDE or Gnome?]
Hell, everybody has strong feelings about this subject. I have resisted long but this post is really way beyond. Imagine: There are two countries, X and Y. - X has made war to two other countries (to one of them with strong support by Y) and shot rockets against a third, it is _suspected_ to have weapons of mass destruction. (Todays news tell me though that it is _not_ likely they do, or even did - is the news in america different?) - Y is proven to _have_ weapons of mass destruction, is the only country that has actually used it and is willing to do so again. (see below: [1]). Has recently one-sidedly _broken_ the ABM treaty with russia to reduce nuclear weapons on both sides (Y is now stronger so the treaty is obsolete). [2] Y possess biological/chemical weapons and has recently ignored another international treaty they signed in 1972 that bans b+c weapons [4] . They have repeatedly attacked and invaded other (democratically elected) countries. [3] --- Which one is more dangerous? --- Do you sometimes question yourself and your position? How comes your are so self-righteous? "You are with us or against us" what a shit! I am against Bush _and_ Fundamentalists, because they are basically the same to me. Some people may have hurt your feelings - well that's sad. But your country is going to _kill_ people - not just hurt their feelings. Re: [newbie] Getting LILO back after installing Win XP

My second drive is partitioned into a D: drive with FAT 32 and the remaining 4 gigs has Mandrake 7.0. I've reinstalled Win 98 before but obviously the C: drive was then FAT 32. Using the MDK 7.0 boot CD and choosing upgrade I have always got LILO back. I'm a bit worried now that the C: drive is NTFS. If I use the MDK 7.0 boot CD will I damage something? I have never used NTFS before and don't want to mess things up. I unfortunately don't have a MDK boot floppy disk. Please advise. George Baker [EMAIL PROTECTED] The problem is going to be this: Yes, lilo writes to the MBR of the FIRST drive - in your case the C:\ drive - but the boot (/boot) HAS to live on the FIRST drive. Being that it's already formatted to NTFS, I would assume that you've used all the available space on the FIRST drive for XP - so that might present problems. In a best case with something like this, you could resize the NTFS partition (as long as it's not a dynamic partition) so that you have 30mb of free space - to use for /boot. LILO could then inhabit the MBR and /boot could inhabit the free space, whilst the rest of your linux file systems lives elsewhere - on the SECOND drive or wherever. Without knowing what tools you have at hand, you might be able to download the demo version of PowerQuest's Partition Magic and resize the NTFS partition (if it's not dynamic) enough...I'd suggest other tools, but in reality, none are more suited to that task. If you're in a position to "re-plan" your installation, you might consider a new scheme. For instance, you could do your initial install on your FIRST drive, setting aside 35mb of space (safety) that is unpartitioned or unformatted, and install XP on the remaining drive space. When installing linux, you could put the LILO and /boot on the FIRST drive and then the / and /home (or whatever) on the SECOND drive. My situation is that I have put mine as such: hd0: lilo /boot (50mb) / (10gb) XP - 27gb VFAT hd1 SWAP - 640mb /tmp - 500mb XP - 38gb VFAT scsi-hd0 /var /home BTW, having the VFAT for XP/Win98 gives me the ability to easily mount/share/read/write files in between the OS's. HTBH! Cheers and Good Luck! Stephen, you don't have to have the /boot partition on the first dive. I have a setup on one of my computers where the first drive has two windblows OS's and thus the mbr on the first drive, hda, whilst two mandrake OS's and a common /boot partition inhabit the second drive, hdb. It has always worked fine. John -- John Richard Smith [EMAIL PROTECTED] Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

[newbie] MySQL users DB corrupted
I have a small problem where a power outage has corrupted the user database for mysql, now no users can authenticate/manipulate any databases hosted by the MySQL Engine... This is rather annoying since I am no longer able to administer the databases, and I appear to be unable to modify, or create users all together. The engine is running, and the availability of data is still there, but in a read only manner. I can pull data out, but unless I can authenticate, I cant enter any in! How can I fix this? Almost all of the admin tools I have found will not work without logging in. If there is no other solution, is it possible to import the existing database I have (used for inventory purposes) into a fresh mysql install? I cant export anything, and the database files are basically flat files at this point... A good web resource would also be appreciated! any help would be appreciated. The grunge build up was responsible for a lot of mouse trouble for people that I know in the past. :-) For a 5 button mouse you may have to manually edit the mouse section of XF86Conf-4 to reflect the buttons and their mapping. I think. I don't have a 5 button mouse (or a clue) but it seems logical that you might have to "teach" it how to use all the buttons. Maybe copy'n'paste the mouse section of that file (/etc/X11/XF86Conf-4) to a message since you have Stephen's attention now. "Listen" to his advice since he's a hell of a lot more knowledgeable than I'll ever hope to be. Re: [newbie] Getting LILO back after installing Win XP
My understanding is that LILO only writes the MBR of hda. The MBR is not NTFS and it is separate from any partitions. You should be able to safely replace the MBR with LILO. I beleive your concern to be if lilo can pass control to the boot of the NTFS partition. I haven't heard anyone complain about this not working. You need to open a cdplayer. XMMS is very good, though some people need help changing a plugin to make it work on their system. Try it. If it doesn't play your cds, go to Derek's linux page www.jennings.homelinux.net and read the section there. One warning, though, the article implies that it only is needed if you have no audio cable attached. This is not so. For some of us the cable may be there and still need this fix. Just put the line (as root) in /etc/bashrc at the end of the file. It's OK to use urpmi for kernel-source rpms, but not (read _NEVER_) for kernel binary rpms (ie, the pre-compiled ones). Use 'rpm -ivh kernel-xx.rpm' Actually, urpmi already has a safeguard to prevent using it to upgrade a kernel, see /etc/urpmi/inst.list There were several 2.4.20 Mdk kernels recently. I had minor problems with one (the first one IIRC), the last one 2.4.20-2 had no problems (for me). Current one is 2.4.21-pre2.1, the first Mdk 2.4.21 kernel, and appears to have no problems. These kernels are on cooker mirrors, but should work on 9.0. There's also newer Mandrake kernels available from the Club, and I believe also on Mdk unsupported/ mirrors.
