KDE 3.1 and GNOME 2.2.0 are on the 9.1b

Now I have even more reason to hate Gnome - it's been consistently
loosing it's old functionaltiy and ability to customise it. Sadly, I
will no longer bother with Gnome until either they resurrect the ideas
behind the 1.4.8 scheme, or start from scratch. It's slow, buggy,
impossible for a newbie to configure properly, impossible for a newbie
to even customise properly, and no matter what, it's gotten even more
bloated and less like the desktop that it once was.

KDE 3.1, on the other hand, is sweeter than a Georgia peach...really
appreciating the time and effort on that desktop - just can't figure out
where Gnome deviated so far from the original idea...

Ah well, now I'm a confirmed KDE person (with the exception of
Enlightenment and Fluxbox)...

Still a bit bummed out that my scanner and printer can't work with
it...(sniff)...

[newbie] misc-fixed font?

2003-02-11 Thread Jerry Barton
Hello again all :)

Had a bit of a problem pop up. I just installed xarchon (a game) and went to try it
out. The program LOADED ok, but when I'd go to start a new game it would just close.
So, to see if I could gain any insight, I started it from a terminal instead of from
the menu and it gave me the error:

cannot load font `-misc-fixed-medium-*-normal-*-15-0-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1'

SO.. I opened up mcc and went to system/fonts to check it out. I have the fixed
(misc) font and all but it only has 7,8,9,10,12,13,14,&20 pt settings, not 15.

(and thinking back there was another program quite a while back that couldn't find
this font. I remember i found an alternative to it and i've forgotten which it was.)

SO the question is, anyone know a 1) workaround or 2) a package where i can get
the font/setting it needs?

TIA

Jerry

Hello,

[global]
server string = Mandrake Linux 8.1 - Samba Server %v
security = SHARE
encrypt passwords = Yes
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
max log size = 50
socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192
printcap name = lpstat
dns proxy = No
hosts allow = 127.0.0.1 192.168.0.
printing = cups
[NT]
comment = NT
path = /mnt/nt
guest account = mountedfs
guest ok = Yes

Selected segments of smb.conf. In my experience "security = SHARE" is a lot
more friendlier than a user system, and you don't need a samba password
file.
Allow guests, using a nominated account to give access privileges.

Then, set up a simple firewall (which should be up anyway :-)) and block
NetBIOS. I think. But the hosts allow should take care of that anyway; I'm
on
a 192.168.0 IP range (class C network?), and any other computers on it can
access the share, so it's very convenient, and safe.

This assumes, of course, you're on a home network and not in need of strict
user security.

HTH & Regards,
_nasturtium

~~~
Hm,
When I changed from "security = user" to "security = share" the Windows ME
machine was instantly able to connect and see the Linux shares EXCEPT FOR
the one share that was named the same as the Win ME logged in user on the
Win ME machine...
The strange thing is that the Win ME user was specifically created as a
Samba user and has the same password as on the ME machine.
Yes, I'm behind a firewall and I'm restricted by IP address to the local
network- the Win ME machine is definitely allowed...
I must be close to having this working... I'm sure I'm just dancing around
the correct solution/configuration.
Any further thoughts appreciated and thanks for all those thus far
[newbie] Apache and PHP variables
2003-02-11 Thread Antonio Contreras
OK, so this is beyond the scope of a Mandrake forum, so forgive me for asking.
I have transitioned my web server from Win2k to Linux. Everything seems to be
working OK except I just noticed a page that is supposed to not show the
banner, but does.
In win2k, the PHP variable $URL was returning the name of the file for the
page, and I have a structure to not display when the $URL is a certain set of
values.
php.ini has the global variables option turned on, so that's not the issue.
Does anyone know if the variable is passed to PHP by the server or if it is
strictly a PHP value? Was it an IIS varaible that's not in Apache2? Any
ideas?
I'm not an Adelphia customer but I also can not send messages to the
Mandrake mailing lists using my ISP's smtp server.
I spent many hours on the phone with my ISP and exchanged several
e-mails with Charles Davant at Mandrake who tried to help. In the end I
too had to finally give up and look for an alternative means of posting.
A few hours with Google led me to http://www.myrealbox.com. A free
service which is run by the good folks at Novell who are using the site
as test bed for their Netmail product. They had moratorium on new
accounts for a while, but they are once again accepting new users.
I have been using the service for nearly a year now and have had only
one instance of the system being unavailable when I wanted to get my
mail.
I could go on about all the 'Great' features of the service, but I don't
want anyone to think I'm a Novell employee, (I'm not)..
While I appreciate the fact the Mandrake mailing list are spam free, it
is rather irksome to not be able to use a service I am paying for.  But
as the French say... ceci est la vie.
Hope this helps everyone.
Re: [newbie] easy to use HTML editor?
2003-02-11 Thread Angus Auld
Thanks to everyone that replied for the feedback.
I guess short of sweet-talking someone else into doing the coding for me, I'll have to
spend some time working
my brain cells, and learn the basics of HTML. Kind of figured that was likely ;-).
I have been told by others who do HTML work that a wysiwyg editor is OK to get the
basics down, and then
you can spruce it up with a text editor.
As someone suggested though, you might as well get it right the first time. A job
worth doing is worth doing right, as they say. I am not lacking a choice of text
editors for Linux. I have "HTML for Dummies" on
hold at the local library. :-)
Thanks once again ppl.
Best regards.
Hey FF, try this.  Add the following line to your ~/.bashrc file
alias rpmq="rpm -qa | grep -i $1"
rpm  = call the rpm program
- -qa  = list all files installed to standard output (screen)
|= redirect output to
grep = search input for text string
- -i   = ignore case
$1   = variable indicating string to search for
What the line I am telling you to add does is alias rpmq (or any other string
you can remember for that matter) to the command rpm -qa | grep.  So now when
you type
[greg@aurora ~]$ rpmq fluxbox
You'll get (on my box anyway)
fluxbox-0.1.12-2mdk
Which is the same result as typing rpm -qa | grep -i fluxbox.  The purpose of
doing this is so you don't have to remember "rpm -qa | grep -i", just rpmq.
You can do this with lot's of commands.  Here is another example.  I like my
directory listings done to have the file size in human readable format as
well as all file attributes displayed and the list displayed in color when I
use the ls command.  Since ls does not do this by default, I added this line
to my .bashrc file:
alias ls="ls -lsh --color"
now when I type ls I get
[greg@aurora ~]$ ls
   Following up on civileme's post. I kept being really impressed w/ how well the 9.1
had been fixed for those of us w/ out DNS or default gateways, *but*  xfce is so
borked in b3 - right mouse-button window-listing and selecting useless - that, with
regret, I dropped back to 9.0, whre xfce works.
   This reminds me that everybody on the list who's a Mandrake Club member should
remember to use their two weekly votes for the apps they want to see working in 9.1.
But for this kind of usage, grep is as simple as can be! the -i switch
is simpy for case-INsensitivity. (so that a grep for windowmaker
will return results that include "Windowmaker, WINDOWMAKER", you
get the idea)
In this particular example, it's not even needed, you can usually just
"grep searchterm" and it will work :o)
grep is just a way to use regular words to sort and see only certian info.
in the above command, rpm -qa (asks the rpm program to Query All so -qa) then
"|" is a "pipe to" or route thru, then, grep -i Windowmaker says only answers
that (-i) include "WIndowmaker" so grep strips out all the answers that don't
include "Windowmaker"
Wow... Thx Ed!  Thats the easiest answer & way to remember this stuff.
:)  Up till the books I'd read about using grep were very confusing. Thx
Aaagh, not FrontPage!  That program is responsible for more botched HTML
than anything ever written.
I go along with the consensus that Netscape/Mozilla Composer is a good
WYSIWYG tool for beginners.  OpenOffice also exports reasonable HTML -
not exactly elegant code, but standards-compliant.
Personally, I'm very happy with Bluefish.  For long, multipage
Thanks, ET, explaining things is the way to go.
A minor point ... the -i option for grep indicates that the search
should ignore case. This is useful if you're not sure if the rpm is
named WindowMaker, windowmaker, Windowmaker
But for this kind of usage, grep is as simple as can be! the -i switch
is simpy for case-INsensitivity. (so that a grep for windowmaker
will return results that include "Windowmaker, WINDOWMAKER", you
get the idea)
In this particular example, it's not even needed, you can usually just
"grep searchterm" and it will work :o)
I had a weird little encounter with this problem today.
Was trying to get a MS Access database to shut itself down when it was
launched from the sever (front-end is too huge for transmitting forms across
crappy government data lines). Came across the brilliant idea of using the
"\\" prefix in the UNC server address. Then couldn't figure out why it
wouldn't work.
Hmmm, what does it THINK the path is?
"F:\Center\...\CSS.mdb"  Yaargh!
Another example of the maxim:
Everything in Linux, from changing a font to recompiling a kernel, takes 5
hours. It then runs forever without a problem.
Everything in Windows takes 5 minutes. It then takes forever to debug it and
figure out why it isn't working without a problem.
using the newer one I have.
I'm sure this isn't what you're looking for, but I'd recommend
Kwrite...the reason being is you'd have to learn HTML, which takes a
couple hours, max, so long as you have a handy list which tells you what
each tag does (and said lists are easily found on the web).
Using this method, you will develop a much greater sense of how to design
a website, even if in the end you ended up using a WYSIWYG editor.
   Yes.  You should mention the hardware involved with these various
issues.  You can probly find fixes or work-arounds by searching the
cooker ML archives, or bugzilla. A lot, if not most, will say it's
fixed in newer packages  SO
   Suggestion:  You can get to current cooker where a lot of your
problems have already been reported, and probly fixed ... even with a
56k dialup. I did for years.  First set up urpmi sources for /RPMS/
and /RPMS2/ from a cooker mirror.  Then go into /etc/urpmi/ and edit
skip.list and add 'kernel', and 'kernel-source' (without the 's) to
the file. The 2.4.21-1 kernel you've got is fine for now. -5 is
current now, but you can get it later.
   Then copy skip.list to skip.mt (empty), skip.xfree, skip.kde,
skip.gnome, and skip.alot.  In skip.xfree add all the rpms you get
when you run 'rpm -qa | grep -i xfree' in a console, but without the
versioning numbers. EG, XFree86-4, not XFree86-4.3-0.20030210.1mdk.
Do the same for kde, gnome.  Then cat the skip.xfree, gnome and kde to
skip.alot.  IE, everything in each file goes into skip.alot
Copy skip.alot to skip.list (overwrite, remember you've still got
an empty skip list saved in skip.mt). Then run 'urpmi.update -a &&
urpmi --auto-select' on your cooker mirror. I guesstimate this will be
less than 100MB's of updates, about 5 to 6 hours on a dialup. So
start it at bedtime ;)
Now you've got your base system current, you can start to get
kde, gnome, and xfree current.  Edit this current skip.list (really a
copy of skip.alot) and remove what you want to install, eg, all the
xfree entries.  Run 'urpmi.update -a && urpmi --auto-select' again
(maybe another night?) and you'll have xfree 4.3 current CVS.
Similar for gnome and kde (other nights?).
  All these are fairly large updates. This jocking around of skip
files lets you do it selectively at a pace a dialup can handle.
Notice in the above you keep your original skip.xfree, skip.gnome,
skip.mt and skip.kde files, ie, use 'cp', not 'mv'.  You'll need 'em
again as Laurent likes to update (specially kde pachages) alot. Often
several times a day. XFree gets updated about weekly, I don't really
pay a lot of attention to gnome as I don't use it. So just get
current on an every week or so basis, doin it in several nightly
sessions at your own pace.  You don't need each successive patch
level, goin from where you are to the current patch level (-__mdk) is
fine. As a rule of thumb, I use to get about every 5th update of
files like kdebase when I was on dialup.
You could also copy the contents of the 3 CD's to create a local
mirror on your harddrive, then use rsync on a mirror that supports
it, to keep current. It'd be less d/l'ing, but I don't know how-to,
as I've never even tried it. I use to stay cooker current with a
dialup in the ol' pre-urpmi days by going to cooker mirrors and d/l
by the dates shown on the mirrors, by hand, ie, anything I had
installed but with a newer date and versioning number. A real PITA,
specially deps ;)   urpmi is your friend.  With all major updates
(kde, gnome), login/out a few times to settle the system. After a
xfree update, also restart the X server (Crl-Alt-Backspace) before
you login to X.
If you do all the above, by next weekend you'll probly have 9.1 RC1
OK I will do, I'm having fun.
Let's see if I understood:
1.- Your Linux machine is going to be the gateway to the Internet (2
NICs: one for Internet and the other for the LAN).
2.- A second machine connected to (1) can boot either Win98 or W2K.
3.- When booting Win98 it will be allowed access to the Internet.
4.- When booting W2K, access to the Internet will be denied.
5.- Win98 and W2K will have their IP addresses statically set.
As others here have mentioned, "easy to use" is a somewhat relative term
when dealing with html editors.  If you want something with a wysiwyg
type interface, Netscape Composer is probably as good as it gets under
Linux (won't do frames, though).  If you know some html and just want to
take some of the donkeywork (i.e. typing) out of it, you could do worse
than have a look at Arachnophilia - I've used it for pages with tables -
it will turn csv text into a table.  This saved me a lot of work. It's a
java program which will run under Windows or Linux provided you have the
The guy's philosophy is interesting also - see his "careware" licensing
Yes.  You should mention the hardware involved with these various
issues.  You can probly find fixes or work-arounds by searching the
cooker ML archives, or bugzilla. A lot, if not most, will say it's
fixed in newer packages  SO
Suggestion:  You can get to current cooker where a lot of your
problems have already been reported, and probly fixed ... even with a
56k dialup. I did for years.  First set up urpmi sources for /RPMS/
and /RPMS2/ from a cooker mirror.  Then go into /etc/urpmi/ and edit
skip.list and add 'kernel', and 'kernel-source' (without the 's) to
the file. The 2.4.21-1 kernel you've got is fine for now. -5 is
current now, but you can get it later.
Then copy skip.list to skip.mt (empty), skip.xfree, skip.kde,
skip.gnome, and skip.alot.  In skip.xfree add all the rpms you get
when you run 'rpm -qa | grep -i xfree' in a console, but without the
versioning numbers. EG, XFree86-4, not XFree86-4.3-0.20030210.1mdk.
Do the same for kde, gnome.  Then cat the skip.xfree, gnome and kde to
skip.alot.  IE, everything in each file goes into skip.alot
 Copy skip.alot to skip.list (overwrite, remember you've still got
an empty skip list saved in skip.mt). Then run 'urpmi.update -a &&
urpmi --auto-select' on your cooker mirror. I guesstimate this will be
less than 100MB's of updates, about 5 to 6 hours on a dialup. So
start it at bedtime ;)
 Now you've got your base system current, you can start to get
kde, gnome, and xfree current.  Edit this current skip.list (really a
copy of skip.alot) and remove what you want to install, eg, all the
xfree entries.  Run 'urpmi.update -a && urpmi --auto-select' again
(maybe another night?) and you'll have xfree 4.3 current CVS.
Similar for gnome and kde (other nights?).
   All these are fairly large updates. This jocking around of skip
files lets you do it selectively at a pace a dialup can handle.
Notice in the above you keep your original skip.xfree, skip.gnome,
skip.mt and skip.kde files, ie, use 'cp', not 'mv'.  You'll need 'em
again as Laurent likes to update (specially kde pachages) alot. Often
several times a day. XFree gets updated about weekly, I don't really
pay a lot of attention to gnome as I don't use it. So just get
current on an every week or so basis, doin it in several nightly
sessions at your own pace.  You don't need each successive patch
level, goin from where you are to the current patch level (-__mdk) is
fine. As a rule of thumb, I use to get about every 5th update of
files like kdebase when I was on dialup.
 You could also copy the contents of the 3 CD's to create a local
mirror on your harddrive, then use rsync on a mirror that supports
it, to keep current. It'd be less d/l'ing, but I don't know how-to,
as I've never even tried it. I use to stay cooker current with a
dialup in the ol' pre-urpmi days by going to cooker mirrors and d/l
by the dates shown on the mirrors, by hand, ie, anything I had
installed but with a newer date and versioning number. A real PITA,
specially deps ;)   urpmi is your friend.  With all major updates
(kde, gnome), login/out a few times to settle the system. After a
xfree update, also restart the X server (Crl-Alt-Backspace) before
you login to X.
 If you do all the above, by next weekend you'll probly have 9.1 RC1
PM, are your username/password the same on both boxes ?
They should be.
Otherwise, I'm afraid I'll have to pass you on to others on
the list. I can only help with Samba as far as installing
something (I never use Samba 'cause I don't have to - you
see, I never had any M$ experience. I'm an old-timer
coming directly from CP/M over OS/2 to Linux).
Another tip : Go to the mail archives and do a search on
any subject, i.e. *samba*. There's a wealth of information
there. Problably you'll find your problems solved many
times :-) . Point your browser to :
[newbie] still hardware problems
2003-02-11 Thread Yaakov
Hi
i wrote some time ago about the slow handling of mandrake (i mean that it
takes too much time until the programs start up). so i downloaded the
kernel 2.4.19-24mdk as someone suggested (thank you greg!). with this
update there are some improvements!! but konquero and the games are still slow.
so anybody got an idea what to do? i think the problem could result because
of my chipset,...
here are the information about my current system: P4 2,53GHz; Epox 4G4A
with Intel i845G chipset; Radeon 8500; Seagate Barracuda 80GB (2x)
thx for helping me
I have no idea what 9.1 final will be like, but if it is refined from the
Beta3 it is going to be great.  I have seen fewer problems with that beta
than with most of the regular distro releases (except 7.1).  One item of
annoyance on it is that STILL no one has taken the trouble to adapt Xfce to
Mandrake, and it functions poorly with taskbar items that make no sense and
no inherent ability to change itself.
NO what I am saying is this Beta is the best I have seen among betas and
better than a lot of final releases.
Re: [newbie] easy to use HTML editor?
2003-02-11 Thread Aaron
Well,
The problem is that the more gui the slower is the coding.
I tried screem, quanta, bluefish and one from IBM.
The point is that a beginner should understand that html is not
programming. A good beginning is to look at some tutorials for html.
I would recommend jbarta's tutorials but they don't conform to the
standards.
The amazing thing with html is how little you need to know to get the
results you need.
The issue is what tool will get you there the quickest.
Any editor that gives you a list of the tags is good.
I ended up using VIM with the xml editing extensions. But I first used
the XHTML vim.
The what you see is what you get route will only confuse you in the long
run.
The first step is a good tutorial.
Mandrake update : K --> Configuration --> Mandrake Update.
However, I think your problem is your sources ( the places
to get rpm's from). To that end, try *Software Sources
Manager* first. It's in the same menu.
Or, if that doesn't solve the rpm-issues, I'll try
something I never did before : attach a file to this post.
It's a script, which means a series of shell-commands.
I use it to update my sources. Try it as follows :
1. save the attached scrip (Updatescript) in your home
directory.
2. Open a terminal-window and su to root.
3. In your home directory, issue the command :
   *./Updatescript* (without the quotes, remember the ./).
4. Watch patiently as the messages scroll by. Have a beer
or something.
5. Now, issue the command (still as root) *urpmi webmin*.
That should give you the latest and greatest, including
dependencies.
Its in mandrake control center...
You can start mandrake control center by opening an su console and typing:
mcc
or you can just open mandrake update by typing:
MandrakeUpdate
(notice the caps, they are important.)
RE: [newbie] SAMBA help?
2003-02-11 Thread Franki
Where did you get the webmin rpm from??
its looking in the wrong place for smb.conf
it should be looking in /etc/samba/smb.conf
did you install samba from your mandrake disks or did you get it
elsewhere???
you have two choices:
1. edit the config files for webmin in /etc/webmin
2. uninstall the rpm you used and install the mandrake rpm.
actually, there is a third option, it may be that you can go into webmin in
the config screen and choose mandrake 9 as the OS.. if it is on the list
that should fix your problem.
OK...
I have downloaded the most recent .rpm from
www.webmin.com and installed it.  I can connect to
https://localhost:1 as root.  Now when I choose the
"Servers" area and go to the "Samba Share Manager", it
gives me the following error...
"The configuration file /etc/smb.conf was not found.
Most likely Samba is not installed on your system, or
your module configuration is incorrect."
have you used MandrakeUpdate before???
I think there was an updated webmin released..
Start MandrakeUpdate (again from su console) and upgrade your packages...
(mostly kernel and rpm packages and stuff.. )
(also if you have not used Mandrake Update before, it will prompt for a
updates site and you can choose an update site from the list.)
after you have updated some stuff, go and try urpmi webmin again...
It will go to the update site and get the latest version.
Well it's my 3rd attempt and I have a working desktop with a dialup
internet connection.
The install is painfully slow, I wait an eon between installation
windows, and I wonder whether anyone else has this problem.I certainly
did not experience this with beta1 and 2.
The install time is something like 2 1/2 hours against a normal 40
minuites or so.
Anyway, the problems are,
installer misses off "foomatic rpm notfound", therefore no printer config,
have installed foomatic on desktop via urpmi foomatic, so the rpm is
there to
install. I have yet to configure a printer.
The installer doesn't much like a usb camera being plugged in, and the boot
script doesn't like it either, I get "ldm_valiate_partition_table ()
disk read failed.
which I do not find odd since my camera is unlikely to be part of my
partition table,
or is it ?
The installer insists on installing supermount none of which work, and I
have
to re-write the fstab scripts to give me scsi-em / automount. then all
works,
but all media devices, roms and floppies report eror message "could not
launch
kfmclient"  , what is this about ?
I also get a shutdown script warning " nmb services failed" what is this
about ?
To get an internet connection I have to urpmi kdenetwork-kppp in a terminal
on desktop, why the installer cannot do this I do not know, is it a fault ?
I don't think any of these are catastrophic, and probably not worth
reporting,
anyone anything to suggest ?
[newbie] connection sharing using static ip
2003-02-11 Thread fifner the dragon
Hi,
I just configured my connection sharing using drakgw in the mandrake control center.
When it finished I got the message "you may now share internet connection with other
computers on your Local Area Network, using atomatic network configuration (DHCP)."
Hoow do I set it up to have the internet connection use the static ip numbers from the
other machine? I have only one computer as a network client and it has a dual boot.
Win 98 should be allowed to use the internet, but win2000 should not.
Thanks in advance,
Fifner
All 3 of the machines are AMD - runs perfectly on 2 out of 3...including one
with any version of the drivers.
Thanks for the reply.
2003-02-11 Thread Robert Wideman
I agree.  Also there is NO "easy to use" html editor.  If you need something
to do the html stuff for you stick with windows programsdreamweaver or
frontpage.
In Linux there is nothing easy, as per your version of easy.
I agree completely. However, a completely newbie to html
might find it a bit hard to produce something in a hurry
using only a text-editor. Using - for example - Mozilla
Composer gets you running. That doesn't  exclude reviewing
the code in a text editor and doing a tidying-up job.
And, finally, in Konqueror there's a nifty little gadget
that lets you validate the code at W3C.
So : try Mozilla Composer. Validate the code at W3C and
study the errors you get from there.
I suggest jed, kate, joe, nedit, emac or vim, and do it by hand so you know
how to fix what ever your wsiwyg editor screws up. if you can't read the html
  Not to speak for Civileme, but I don't think he meant that at all.
In my own words, and as I've posted recently, I believe 9.1 beta is
better than 9.0 Final. I've been using cooker since about 7.1. It's
usually been true that as the next release reached the beta and RC
stages, it was already better than the last release.
by hand 'modprobe saa7134' and 'modprobe tuner' and
Could anybody help me? The card is not in the list of
cards supported by saa7134 (I tried to put 'card=0'
My point, that I recognized was stated rather unpolitely, is that he
better gets used to the new system instead of trying to bring his old
baggage of knowledge to another land (OT: a source of conflicts and
misunderstandings between different citizenships).
I am myself a Windows user (lately a bit forcefully because most of my
customers are using W2K networks). So I'll keep using Windows for a
while (as long as they keep using it and I don't find replacements for
Visio and Access Reports). I feel that I can manage Windows much better
than GNU/Linux but I also know that the only way to really get into
Linux will be getting used to the Linux way. Being a newbie right now
most of my system management work in Linux is done through the CLI.
There will be time for using graphical tools after I have learned what I
am doing.
After 20 years using DOS/Windows I am rather used to the A;, C:, D:
schema but after working with the file system way I recognized that the
DOS schema is somehow like asking yourself: In what drive this part of
my data is in this RAID? Ok, I am exaggerating but I don't know how many
times I have lost data because I forgot to backup a directory in another
drive.
Or maybe I really stick a little too much to Marcel Proust's quotation
at the bottom of my signature.
you search the bugzilla database and the cooker ML archives. You'll
not only probly find an answer or workaround, you also won't be, as
Ed says, filing duplicate bugs (ie, already reported).
   'Course in the past when RC1 was rumored to be next, we got beta4
instead ;)
I would hope that the final release would be better than the beta. I am
using beta 3 right now and love it but do have problems with it (it is a
beta after all, lol)
First Partition: NT/2000/XP partition.
Second One: FAT32
Last partition for Mandrake
Window$ will read partition until it finds something it doesn't
recognize (like Linux file system) and then it will stop. So, if you put
Linux in the middle, Window$ will not read the FAT32 partition that you
set for your data.
Enter expert mode.
You have to set 2 partitions at least for Linux: swap (let's say 512Mb)
and the one where root (/) is mounted.
My initial install was EXT3 for the root partition but now I have a
different setup. Anyway, with the one I am giving here you can get
started. Then start reading and optimize your
system/setup/applications/hardware/and so on.
Good luck
[newbie] will ESS's ES1888 easily be configured for making sounds?
2003-02-11 Thread micro-people
Hi
am making footprints at the entrance of mandrake world
cause my plan 4 linux @ gateway2000-solo2100(pemtium mmx150mhz 48mb-ram) is to
build it as a promt mode only musical instrument
as a default
i chose slackware to keep things simple
but am stuggling at configuring sound aspects
solo2100 has ess's es1888 on it
and
modprobe sb
seems ok to make it work
but
the result of
mpg123 tori_amos.mp3
made her sing slowly with a male voice
am wondering if
mandrake will simply solve this problem
even if i keep things without x
if it does
would love to add things at
http://lulu.esm.rochester.edu/kevine/turnkey/home.html
csound oriented selections of musical apps
over there requires mandrake 9.0 (they tell us to make it fully installed)
so i maybe to greedy
but anyway
would like to see somebody encourage me to step into mandrake
what do you think?
is my machine too old or low-spec for mandrake
However, I would recommend you to unlearn that Window$ crap and stay
Now now dear, that windows crap (as you call it) is still useful.
Everyone needs to learn one way or another & no way is wrong.  Not even
Windows methods.  They're just different, albeit some are more efficient
I usually put symlinks in all users' home directories - I think whatever
file manager they are using, ordinary users should never have to go
outside their home directories (of course they do go outside as soon as
they click on that symlink, but it doesn't feel like that).I don't use
the Windows letter system, though.  There are all those people out there
Hello,
[global]
server string = Mandrake Linux 8.1 - Samba Server %v
security = SHARE
encrypt passwords = Yes
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
max log size = 50
socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192
printcap name = lpstat
dns proxy = No
hosts allow = 127.0.0.1 192.168.0.
printing = cups
[NT]
comment = NT
path = /mnt/nt
guest account = mountedfs
guest ok = Yes
Selected segments of smb.conf. In my experience "security = SHARE" is a lot
more friendlier than a user system, and you don't need a samba password file.
Allow guests, using a nominated account to give access privileges.
Then, set up a simple firewall (which should be up anyway :-)) and block
NetBIOS. I think. But the hosts allow should take care of that anyway; I'm on
a 192.168.0 IP range (class C network?), and any other computers on it can
access the share, so it's very convenient, and safe.
This assumes, of course, you're on a home network and not in need of strict
user security.
Anne,
Good thought... I've tried all the passwords that I set on the Linux
machine, so I'm sure it's not that.  And it works fine from the XP machine,
no matter what username I pick.
Here's my smb.conf file:
[global]
   workgroup = PINECREST
   netbios name = DINGO
   server string = Samba Server %v
   printcap name = lpstat
   load printers = yes
   printing = cups
   log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
   max log size = 50
   hosts allow = 192.168.1.
   security = user
   encrypt passwords = yes
   smb passwd file = /etc/samba/smbpasswd
   socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192
   dns proxy = no
[homes]
   comment = Home Directories
   browseable = no
   writable = yes
[netlogon]
   comment = Network Logon Service
   path = /var/lib/samba/netlogon
   guest ok = yes
   writable = no
[printers]
   comment = All Printers
   path = /var/spool/samba
   browseable = no
   guest ok = yes
   writable = no
   printable = yes
   create mode = 0700
[print$]
   path = /var/lib/samba/printers
   browseable = yes
   read only = yes
   write list = @adm root
[pdf-generator]
   path = /var/tmp
   guest ok = No
   printable = Yes
   comment = PDF Generator (only valid users)
   print command = /usr/share/samba/scripts/print-pdf %s ~%u
%L%u %m %I &
[public]
   comment = Public Stuff
   path = /home/downloads
   public = yes
   writable = no
   write list = @staff
~~
When I login from the XP machine, I see all of the above shares, as I'm
supposed to.  I've tried encryption = yes and no, to no avail from Win ME.
Any other ideas?
Regards,
Marlo
It's not immediately obvious, though it seems to me that your basic setup must
be pretty close to what you need, or you wouldn't have the result on the XP
machine.  I know from my lan that ME doesn't need anything particularly
different, so that leaves only two possibilities, I think.  You are not
making a connection to your linux box at all, by the look of it, so either
the ME box is not within the allowed range of computers, or it has a problem
with domain name or passwords.  Windows does complicate matters by being
unpredictable in its handling of cases.  Is the workgroup capitalised on the
ME box?
I'll put my global section below, so that you can compare and try any
amendments that look possible.  It feels to me as though it couldn't be in
any other section, if it is at the linux end at all.  HTH
Wasn't there a Mandrake 5.3?  I think that was my first distro, four years
ago.  And I still have a laptop running RH 7.3 and an old one running Caldera
2.3.  And I think there might have been a SuSE 7.3 as well...
It's called smoke signals.  It's supposed to read as follows:
Pphht!!!  :^)
How would I code that in binary on a Linux box? (staying on topic again)
