Whilst in GNOME2 - open a term, and type:

killall -9 metacity; sleep 10; exec sawfish &

After Sawfish starts (nicely), save the session, then logout...then back
in again. That should do it.

Put yourself in the group "root" - that works...but then you have real
power and that's dangerous.

Why setup a mail server at home?
Here's several reasons:

* You can stop bugs from getting to your Windows machines by setting up
your own mail server on a linux box - using whatever you like - either
SENDMAIL or POSTFIX - and do a much better job at catching the nasties
than any M$ box could hope of.

* Better connection control. You can setup your system to check for mail
at specific times - and use FETCHMAIL to grab all the mail for all your
users, then send what it has to send. Nice, scheduled and timely.

* You can setup shared IMAP folders for all the users on your home
network so that you can share documents and emails (funnies, especially)
as well as do other, more productive things.

* You can very quickly and easily setup a web interface for the users on
your home network to get their mail - keeps them from having to rely on
crap like M$ pOutlook and M$ Outlook Digress, er, Express

* You can setup internal email so that you can send nasty emails to your
children (or partner) without having them bounce outside then back in
again.

* Snatching your email as quickly as you can before it can be read by
the spies and hackers out there is a better idea than letting it sit in
a queue or spool where the Evil US Government can read it...so the
faster you get it home, the safer (supposedly) it is...

* You can setup your own spam filtering system to do so much better than
any M$ product can. (And OH how simple that is)

* You can suck your Hotmail down to your system without ever having to
go to the Hotmail site (what a drag) and spamfilter it as well...

* You're in control. You like being in control, don't you ??

* You're stabbing back at the rank and file of the internet world by
having your own email server. Why not do it just for that matter?

* You learn email setup and administration

* You're in control. Or did I mention that already?

* You're the envy of all your geek friends because you
setup/maintain/administer your own home email server. Kudos! Whilst they
pine away over bugs and nasties in their M$ products, you're happily
chomping through your millions of daily emails with nary a problem!

* You're doing more on your one teensy weensy little linux box than an
entire MS Exchange server could possibly do - no matter who the
administrator was! (And you're more in CONTROL. CONTROL.CONTROL)

* You're cool when you have a home email server.

* Osama bin Laden doesn't have his own email server, but you can!

* George Bush can't even spell "email server", but you have one at home.
Dig that.

* No one can shut down your home email server. It's yours, and that's
that.

* If something goes wrong, you don't have to call tech support. You can
scream at yourself instead.

* NO QUOTAS when you have your own email server. Someone can send you
100mb of absolute crap and it won't kill your account status.

* You can have your own home email server and pink hair at the same
time.

>> no such file in rpmseek or rpmfind

Sorry to be blunt here but
NO, your having an ID-10-T code issue here. If you dont know what that is
just take out the dashes and look at it for a few seconds.
Your not looking at the message and looking at what you already have in your
folder that you DLed the KDE files to.

##
1---libarts == 1.1.0-1tex is in package
libarts-1.1.0-2tex.i586.rpminstall this before installing
arts-1.1.0-2tex.i586.rpm, its in the folder where you got the files.
2---kdelibs == 3.1-3tex is in package kdelibs-3.1-5tex.i586.rpm...install
before installing kdelibs-devel-3.1-3tex, its in the folder where you got
the files.
3---libarts == 1.1.0-1tex...same for (1), install before
libarts-devel-1.1.0-1tex, its in the folder where you got the files.

Use a little common sense sometimes.
Also if they wont install then use "rpm -Uvh --force --nodeps package.rpm"
command. There are several posts since my original posting stating that
they had to use it. Thats what i would have to do myself.

My roommate wants to. Dont know why. We have 23 computers between me and
him. I changed from administration to programming about a month ago and
have gone down to 4, 1 windows, 1 linux, 1 Linux-From-Scratch test box, 1

Mail servers in the house, only needed if i am going to host my own website,
then i need my own email server. But i am not doing that, he is. I can NOT

Technically you are correct, BUT when you decend the tree it takes you to an
HTTP:// in the fact that it is correct and not a typo. Its just a screwed
up http thing that it takes you where you told it NOT to go. The original
link is:
http://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/contrib/texstar/linux/distrib
utions/mandrake/9.0/KDE-3.1/
Notice the HTTP:// in there.now for some reason the above link works.
Try decending the tree to where you get normal html pages, then try to copy
that link in the address line into another browser...it takes you to a porn
site. Why? Dont know, DNS Servers maybe?

Opera Swipes at Microsoft with Muppet Browser
Fri February 14, 2003 01:53 PM ET
By John Acher

OSLO (Reuters) - Norwegian software group Opera took a swipe at U.S. giant
Microsoft MSFT.O on Friday by issuing a an Internet browser that converts
text on Microsoft's Web Site into the nonsense language of a popular
television puppet.

When Opera users visit Microsoft's MSN site (http://www.msn.com/) with the
new browser, the text displayed there appears to them in a language
mimicking that of the Swedish chef on the popular "Muppet Show," Opera
said in a statement.

"This joke is for real," Opera's chief technology officer Haakon Wium Lie
told Reuters.

Opera calls its new browser the "Bork edition" after the "Bork, Bork,
Bork!" sound made by the Swedish chef Muppet.

In the chef's mock Swedish, the MSN site headline "Weekend movie guide" is
rendered "Veekend mufeee-a gooeede-a" and "Looking for a new car?" is
"Luukeeng fur a noo cer?" to Opera browser users.

frustrated remark about governments not respecting the
civil rights of their own citizens.

I live in a country where various governments don't give a
shit about the individual citizen. But they don't kill us.
They just want to control us. They use M$ software.
Accordingly, they can't.

Now, I don't condemn the the U.S. - In fact I envy them.
Only I don't understand their attitude towards the M$
fascism. Does M$ *own* the American judges ?

Nevertheless, I'm old enough to remember Adolph. I'm
ashamed on behalf of the German government.

No, it is not implemented in 1.3a. From
http://www.mozilla.org/releases/mozilla1.3a/:

Mozilla Mail now has basic junk-mail classification
capabilities. This means you can train your client to distinguish
between good mail and junk-mail. For this first release the
junk-mail controls can mark a message as junk but automatic deleting
has not been enabled. To learn more about this new feature check out
the Mozilla Spam Filters info page.

It is possible in 1.3b, tough, which is out since Monday. From
http://www.mozilla.org/releases/mozilla1.3a/:

Mozilla Mail's junk-mail classification is mostly complete. Users
can now automatically move junk mail to a spam folder.

Benjamin.

RE: [newbie] Another fluxbox/ROX convert: [was] This is personal!

2003-02-14 Thread Terry Smith
Rob,

Can't help you on the two fluxbox toolbars but you can run ROX with
multiple 'panels' (like KDE's kicker) where you can dock apps,
directories or files. The panels can be on the left, right, bottom or
top and you can invoke more than one.

e.g. this is my .fluxbox/startup file

#!/bin/bash

xscreensaver -no-splash &
bsetbg -f /home/terry/Photos/uploads/IMG_0464.JPG
rox --left=PANEL --pinboard=PIN

This will startup xscreensaver, set a desktop background and invoke the
ROX-filer. The options for rox include a left side panel (where I dock
frequently used application icons) and a 'pinboard'. The latter allows
you to place icons anywhere on your desktop. I've got a few
frequently-accessed directory icons on the pinboard just above the
bottom-center fluxbox toolbar. Simple, but effective.

There is an issue with passing the commands to the fluxbox root menu (rt
button) through the pinboard but there's a patch and some workarounds.

Write if you have questions.

Terry

Oddly enough, you may have to do a restart as in reboot the comp. Once I had
gqcam installed that is what it took. I rebooted and then in console typed
"gqcam" again and voila the camera came up. Go figure! Sometimes you just
have to do the windows thing I guess, at least until you learn how to start

Isn't this the way the world is moving, though? Companies, above all,
can literally move the public. People no longer count, but copyrights
can change the world.

Overall, this is going to do nothing to stop pirates. Nothing. It's only
going to make the game more complex.

Besides, they're just whinging about lost profits that they shouldn't
even really be making anyways. It's just the "I want more!" attitude -
and no matter what they do to stop piracy, pirates are going to come up
with one better.

No such thing as protection that can't be broken.

Thanks to Derek's inspiration and some crucial tips from Todd, I've got

way to go (at least today :-) - fast, versatile, completely
customizable.

Regardless of your fav flavor of desktop manager, check out ROX. It's
quite an impressive program hidden in an apparently very simple
interface.

On a related note.. I just received the new issue of LinuxFormat in
today's mail. Seems they have a comparo of desktop managers: KDE gets
the nod in the heavyweight division; WMaker in the middleweight category
and IceWM in the lightweight department.

I've used them all but still prefer what Derek and Todd have done with

No it does not. The configuration files are considerably easier. They are well
documented with examples.

By "Drop In" I mean when you call /usr/bin/sendmail you execute Postfix.

When you start to do more work from a console than from a GUI - or when
you get rid of GDM/KDM/XDM so that you can boot faster...or when you
start X with only and xterm...or when you go through someone's code
because the program you're trying to compile doesn't work, or because
you want to customise the code to your liking...or when your desktop has
been changed so much as to not be recognisable in the least compared to
what your distro originally plopped on your drive...

Meanwhile, everyone's a newbie. Even if you're into it knee deep -
doesn't matter. No one can ever know enough. Expert are experts in
fields they know - but there are still more fields. Gurus that I've met
both here and back home in the US still admit they don't know something
about a particular thing - but that's the joy of it all.

No matter what you know, someone knows more, or something different.
Besides, if anyone looses the mentality that they're a newbie about
something or another, then they've most certainly got their head stuck
up somewhere where the sun doesn't shine.

I get a really bad attitude on the RH list when you get heaps of
complete idiots that think they're God's gift to linux...they're so
"beyond" the newbie that they don't want to give good information or
they flame the daylights out of the poor "noob" - but when searching
into past archives, you can yank out a message they've requested help
with and throw it back at 'em...damn - everyone needs some humility and
everyone's been there. Ain't met one person yet that was born knowing
anything about computers...

...off my soapbox I shall get...

That's probably not his/her problem. If you downloaded all the rpms
from texstar, you already have them. Read the README.TXT and install
things in the order he says to.

Then, install everything else you want using --force --nodeps.

you told me about *urpmi.setup* from cooker. I used that,
and - hoopla - it worked. Even on my 9.0. Another issue
solved by Mandrake developers and you.

We've all been there. For webmin to run, you only need to install it,
then ensure shorewall lets your system listen on port 1. Ensure
webmin is running though ;)

Ya know, if I could I would delete all MS from this computer. Only trouble is then I would get fired and thrown in jail to boot. Seems like at odd times  and for unknown reasons Outlook decides to switch over to html by itself. I have turned it off and next thing it's back in there. And Billy calls linux a virus. Ha. Hopefully it is off again. Funny when I check format it says "plain text". So let me know if it was me or the one I answered that had the html. grumblemumblegrumblesniff. Dennis M.

[newbie] Possibly dumb USB question

2003-02-14 Thread Roger Sherman
I was digging around in my desk the other day, and found a cheesy little
USB webcam that Earthlink sent me about 3 years ago. I figured I'd play
with it a little, but then realized I've never used a USB device on my
linux box (don't have a windows box anymore)...so I don't even know if
they work, let alone how to make the webcam work. So, a couple questions:

1. How can I tell for sure if my USB ports work? I plugged the webcam in,
and booted up, but didn't see the little green light on it flash (not that
I expected to).

2. Assuming they work, what software should I use for this webcam? And of
course, that's even assuming it will work ... it barely worked in windows,
although I think that was more a software and OS problem than it was the
webcam itself.

I'm using 9.1b3 right now, on a PC with an Abit KG7 mobo, AMD XP1800+, 1
gig of RAM, and ATI Radeon 32 meg All in wonder.

Thanks!

Sorry about that.

Here's httpd.conf:

#
# Based upon the NCSA server configuration files originally by Rob McCool.
#
# This is the main Apache server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/> for detailed information about

# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding

#
# The configuration directives are grouped into three basic sections:
# 1. Directives that control the operation of the Apache server process as a
# whole (the 'global environment').
# 2. Directives that define the parameters of the 'main' or 'default'
server,
# which responds to requests that aren't handled by a virtual host.
# These directives also provide default values for the settings

# 3. Settings for virtual hosts, which allow Web requests to be sent to
# different IP addresses or hostnames and have them handled by the
# same Apache server process.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"

### Section 1: Global Environment

2003-02-14 Thread Jody Cleveland
Hello,

I'm fairly new to both linux and apache. So far, I've only used my server
for hosting squirrelmail, which I have running using ssl.

Well, now I have one of our libraries that wants to move their web pages off
the win2k box, and onto the linux box. So, I added their entry into
httpd.conf and it breaks the ssl site.

Any ideas?

Bah. Gaim's functionality is so basic you get tired from it in a short while.

You could try building a new version of Licq (was out last week) from source.
It's working great, it has implemented batch file transfers, and many

The fix for this is the switch to Gaim. I have never had problems with it.

[newbie] How to setup Benq DC1300 camera

2003-02-14 Thread Trevor Naidoo
Hi All.

I recently upgraded my PC to the following:
Asus A7N266-VM (on-board GeForce2 card), AMD Duron
1.3G & 256 RAM. I also bought a Benq DC1300 USB
digital camera listed on www.everythinglinux.com.au

When I attach the camera in MDK9, my PC hangs (cannot
even get to a terminal using Ctrl+Alt+F1-F12) & I'm
forced to reboot, there are no errors reported. How do
I go about installing this camera since gphoto does
not list this device! I would also like to setup
Gnomemeeting to use this camera for
video-conferencing.

Thank you in advance.

Gerrofff! That's my line. 'Linux is about choice'

OK, now. I have to step in here in defense of Abit. This is one of the
original alerts on the bad capacitor issue:

SEE: http://www.spectrum.ieee.org/WEBONLY/resource/feb03/ncap.html

Excerpt from the above URL:

"So far, the only motherboard maker to admit to the problem is ABIT
Computer Corp. (Taipei), and the only major PC maker to acknowledge
being affected is IBM Corp. But the problem is likely to be more
widespread. Indeed, those who have repaired the damaged boards say that
they have encountered crippled motherboards from Micro-Star
International, ASUSTek Computer, Gigabyte Technology, and others."

So from the standpoint that Abit has traditionally put out very
outstanding products, and from the standpoint that they are just about
the only ones that are being honest about the problem, it is lopsided to
single them out as being "much much worse." I happen to HAVE an Abit
mobo and it's the best I've ever owned. And I've owned a mobo or two,
since I used to fabricate for a living.

Asus, on the other hand, has traditionally tended to produce mobos with
less than 7 slots, sometimes with wierd freako connectors whose
standards nobody understands or really cares about. That's my only beef
with them. Other than that, their mobos are most of the time the
fastest around, and usually they can trash the other ones in the
(non-overclocking) vanilla benches, Soyo and Abit included, assuming
they don't do overclocking and test the boards vanilla, which is what
everybody does anyway. The reason I chose Abit was threefold: One,
because of the flexibility of the overclocker bios, which is the most
flexible one around for tweaking CPU's. So even if my buddy next door
has a soyo or asus, I can STILL outperform his mobo in the quake 3 demo
benches cause my Abit allows better tweaking.

Two, the mobo had no stupid onboard crap like sound, or lan or anything
else that I use cards for because I might want to upgrade that feature
later on. Granted, this is not true anymore for anybody when you look
at all of the newer boards.

Three, the Abit layout usually gives you the maximum amount of slots.
They traditionally have had the most beautiful layouts. I've got a Lian
Li aluminum case with eight slots available and dammit I want to use at
least seven of them. The real man's mobo's used to come with eight
slots available.

Before I quit here, I will say that Soyo has got some beautiful layouts
as well. They are one of the companies that has listened to
consumer/overclocker demand and has produced boards with 7 slots. After
all, I want to give credit where credit is due. TOM. :)
