The linux download section of Download.com rarely if ever gets any traffic, and all the entries are more than just outdated - a good number of them were dead links; their partner, ZDnet, has more activity and is a bit more better suited to linux - so by getting rid of that archive, they're making for easier work on the staff. 2.) CNet isn't exactly the place where linux freaks go - articles, specials and the likes are more aimed at either Windows or Macs. It IS a great archive for Macintosh - and not really a good one for Windows anymore. They're sagging in popularity as it stands, and CNet's reputation isn't what it was five years ago. 3.) They're frightened of the SCO scam, and being a Microsoft puppet, they're pulling it just because they've been told to pull it. -- Wed Jun 11 14:20:00 EST 2003 14:20:00 up 4 days, 11 min, 3 users, load average: 0.27, 0.16, 0.06 - |____ |kuhn media australia| | /-oo /| |'-. |http://kma.0catch.com | | .\__/ || | | || | _ / `._ \|_|_.-' |stephen kuhn| | | / \__.`=._) (_ | email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] | - linux user #:267497 linux machine #:194239 * MDK 9.1 & RH 7.3 Mandrake Linux Kernel 2.4.21-11mdk Cooker for i586 - * This message was composed on a 100% Microsoft free computer * No flight ever leaves on time unless you are running late and need the delay to make the flight -- Murphy's Laws for Frequent Flyers n1 Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? By default anyone who knows your username/password can get in. You can use your firewall to stop ssh access from the Internet or ro restrict access to specific IP addresses (described in the documentations at www.shorewall.net) If you want ssh to be super secure you can restrict access to users whose public keys you hold. The 'mixed' does not necessarily mean there is anything unusual there. The footer is 'inline', but still text. The 'inline' + the boundary makes it look like an attachment, the way I have TheBat set, and I don't even see it in the text message(although I can look at it if I desire). No HTML, RTF, or anything strange anywhere, as I look at the raw message with a text-only viewer. -- Thank you, rikonamailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Glad it worked, guess it doesn't matter bout the icons now!! If you really want them, drag them from konqueror onto your desktop. [newbie] Add printer
My 9.1 install went great - I can surf the web, listen to CD's , view images and play mp3's - etc -but I can't get my printer to work which is shared on another computer on my LAN. When I run "Mandrake Control Center 9.1" , under the "hardware" tab I select "PrinterDrake helps you set up your computer". After a short waiting period and a couple of messages I get "Please wait - searching for new printers" - - after another short wait - I get a menu offering "Add a new printer" - I select that option - then I get another menu offering to check or uncheck three "auto detect" options . So I uncheck "Auto-detect printers connected to this computer" and leave checked "Auto-detect printers connected directly to a local network" and "Auto-detect printers connected to machines running Microsoft Windows" - and "OK". Then appears a window saying "The following printer was auto-detected. The configuration of the printer will work fully automatically " And below that there is a check on :"Epson Stylus COLOR 600 ESC/P, printer "EpsonSty" on SMB/Windows server "ralphleft.mshome.net". I click "OK". Then another window asks if my printer is "EPSON Stylus Color 600" . I click "The model is correct". Then I am offered the option to print test pages and it doesn't print. I have gone through this several times - looking for entry errors. Well, my printer is an Epson COLOR 600 but I don't know where the "EpsonSty" or the "ralphleft.mshome.net" comes from. The computer is identified as "ralphleft" but maybe the "mshome" should be "WORKGROUP" which is the name I use on my LAN. I think I am real close to getting it right - can someone give me a shot of "help" please. Ralph [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Good luck getting sites, in, like, say Panama to comply. Too many countries that would (yeah!) tell the US to get fscked, which would only hurt the complying US companies. I think the courts know this, the long arm of the US doesn't extend EVERYWHERE yet. There are still a few countries yet that have nothing to lose by telling the US to get Fscked. Thos wil always harbour technology (and funds) the US finds objectionable. Cheers Jason Troy Davidson wrote: Makes me wonder if this is the beginning of the SCO fallout. [newbie] supermount
First the reason I'm writing this is that my hd died Sunday night, had to go out and buy a new one completely reload from scratch. I'm having a problem now with my cdrom's and floppy. I disabled supermount with 'supermount -i disable' as root. When I had done this on the previous 9.0 install whenever right clicking on either of the cd icons or the floppy icon in removable media I got the option to mount or unmout (if mounted) that isn't there now. None of the devices can be read as before. Below is my /etc/fstab. I can't find a copy of my previouis installs fstab file so I have nothing to compare it with. NAME uubp -- Unix-to-Unix beer protocol SYNOPSIS uubp [- acefghlqy] site DESCRIPTION Uupb allows the user to transfer beer, ale, or other fermented grain beverages between network sites. Using TCP/IP (telecommunications protocol for imbibing pilsners), uubp encodes beer from a local file system into packets suitable for FTP (fermentation transfer protocol) delivery at a remote IP site. Example: % uubp -c"AMBER" -f0.7 -y0 -q2 198.137.240.100 The preceding example sends two six-packs (-q2) of amber ale (-c"AMBER")with a fizziness quotient of 70%, brewed using yeast of type 0 (saccharo-myces cerevisiae) to IP address 198.137.240.100, which is the IP address for the White House. RESTRICTIONS Both source and destination sites must be running uubp-daemon. In addition, local restrictions exist in many areas for the transportation of alcohol across state lines. The Electronic Frontier Foundation is currently involved in litigation to ensure the ability to distribute beer through the uubp protocol according to the 21st Amendment. You can still use those 57 GB, it depends on how you want to use it. If you want to use it for Mandrake, Diskdrake in Mandrake Control Center will allow you to create partitions and mount them. The type of partition is really up to you, but I guess use whatever you are using right now for Mandrake (ie. Ext3, ReiserFS, etc. see MDK Control Center under Mount Points). If you want to use the 57GB for Windows *or* for both you can use the Windows XP administrative tools to format the 57 GB as FAT32, then both MDK and Win will be able to use the space. > When i go into winxp and check my drives i only see the main drive and > not the second partition of the drive. Windows (deliberately?) cannot see Linux partitions or use them. As for what type of partitions to make, FAT32 will allow *both* systems to see and use the partitions, whereas if you format the 57GB as Ext3 (or whatever you use in Linux (again, see Mandrake Control Center under "Mount Points") then only Mandrake will see the partitions. > Would it be better to make 2 partitions on the second drive prior to > installation and can you tell me what kind of partition i make. you definitely don't need to reinstall! Re: [newbie] need help with greek!
Mandrake 9.1 does support UNICODE. I have my installation set for UTF-8, CODE2000 and SILGREEK fonts, and xwg, a keyboard handler. The keyboard program was prepared by a professor of classical greek at the Moscow univ. Xwg will map the keyboard from US to polytonic greek and back. It allows for entry of polytonic characters: accents, circumflex, etc. Of course you must have the appropriate font. The new version of OpenOffice (wordprocessor and spreadsheet) will work with well with UNICODE; two months ago it did not. Postgresql will also accept the characters. A good start at an excellent tool. Part of the problem, for me, is that it has to be compiled from source. As a newbie, I don't know how to do that in a way that will work in MD. The normal format of a fetchmail line is :- poll pop.provider.net proto pop3 user "jsmith", with password secret1, is "jsmith" here Finally if you put in some global parameters such as :- set postmaster "your_user" set syslog Then any errors will alert you, and there will be a detailed error log in /var/log/syslog HTH derek -- -- www.jennings.homelinux.net Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
