If it's rebooting when you want to burn a cd as well there's something
wrong with the installation. I use it all the time without problems.
I would remove xcdroast and re-install it. HTH

Usually, when I run it the first time after I compile/install it, I get a
message about not being able to find the codecs file. It also tells where to
copy it from:

/usr/local/etc/mplayer/codecs.conf

to your home/user/.mplayer directory, and like you said, I believe it creates
a new config file when first run. I also would have thought that if it could
not find it, it would recreate a basic config file. I might be wrong though.

Maybe you can try that (again?) and see what happens.

Lemme know.

Hmm. I -do- use the gui, always have. I've got both files mentioned in
/home/darklord/.mplayer.

Have you run Mplayer from a shell to see what error messages (if any) popup? I
fixed some small things with my setup this way.

I don't believe I've ever run it from a shell. I'll try it and see if
creates any files in my home dir.

Did I say I don't have that file? That's not what I wanted to say.
Needsleep

I meant to say that I have the file, but it's pretty much empty. It
says, "# Write your default config options here."

Well I tried starting it from the CL. Nothing happened when I ran
mplayer. When I ran gmplayer it opened full screen. Annoying!

I then checked MenuDrake to see what options are being added to make it
open normal size: /usr/bin/gmplayer -quiet -nofs

For whatever reason when I installed and ran mplayer it didn't put any
config info in my home dir. I'm going to rename my .mplayer dir and see
what it make when I run it again. Same thing happened. It creates an
empty "config" file and saves all of the config info in gui.conf.

Oh well. I'm sure I could create a config file, it's just not a
priority at this time. mplayer works well as it is. I'll just continue
to use it with the -nofs option.

Is what you've been doing only possible with the 2450? I can't get the slide

i'm surprised no one has replied as yet.

anyway, you need to edit /etc/shorewall/rules

add the following line
DNAT net loc:192.168.0.2 tcp 21
assuming 192.168.0.2 is the ip address of your windoze workstation.

you can also visit www.shorewall.net.
there is a wealth of good documentation,

Have no fear, that's about it. If yer worried about it "harming" your

not put out a source package that would harm your system if they wanted

Truthfully, I hope Civileme got a cushy Government job, that will keep
him in imported beer until he retires, and then still keep the beer
flowing. I miss him, I just wish better things than still looking for a

Thanks Stephen, so far so good, it is using IPmasquarading and I wish I could
pull the plug or better yet, stick "data eraser" in the floppy drive and blow
it away, then install ML9.2 which looks pretty good apart from MCC misfires.

I bet that's the issue. you have to make sure the permissions are
correct on the directories where the pages are located.

make sure they are searchable like this:

drwxr-xr-x

Have you made any changes at all to the configuration, like the document
root (/var/www/html)? Have you replaced the default page?

What are you putting in the browser address field to access the server,
it's IP or name?

Are you doing this *on* the server or from another machine?

The DocumentRoot has changed and I can view many websites that I have on
my machine using https://localhost/dirname but not using http://

That is when I get the message saying I should use https://

I have Apache2 running on Mandrake9.1 all on my laptop.

Looking back I have never been able to view pages using http: - only
https:

Is this how Apache is set-up by default?

Thanks for any help

[newbie] xcdroast reboots my computer

I'm running 9.1 and have been trying to figure out how to burn DVD's (I have a Sony
DRU500A). Eveything I've read says that xcdroast is the best program to burn DVDs
with. I installed it and ran it as root the first time (as you must) and it caused a
hard reboot. Tried it again. Same result. Reinstalled 9.1. Same result. I
searched the log files and could find no clues. Does anyone have any ideas? BTW I
can burn CD's no problem with Gtoaster, Gcombust, Eroaster and most of the others. I
just can't figure out how to burn DVDs.

Ideas?

Thanks

Still, I think it's "apples and oranges".

Analogy:

WindowsXP = Tarago
Linux = Hummer

No matter what you do to the Tarago, it's still a Tarago, still will
only go as fast as it does, looks really nice, has an automatic shift,
six cylinder engine. You can paint it up, change the seats - whatever -
but it's still a Tarago. When it crashes, it's toast.

Now with a Hummer, you can change engines easily, have not only four
wheel drive, but have either automatic OR shift...you can add shielding
to it to make it more bullet proof, you can put guns and rocket
launchers in it, it travels over literally any terrain, you can make it
look "purty" or make it look rough - like a swiss-army knife...whatever
you want to do with it, you can. If it crashes, start it up again and
take off.

...at least that's an easier way for me to explain it to people.

You'd want to have the machine not just behind your router and firewall,
but behind the system's proxy as well = so that it's internal IP is
translated to an outside IP address - hence masked.

Or rather, the best bet would be to yank the little blue cable coming
out of the back of it for the greatest amount of protection...

Its called "centre channel encoding" and is done at the studio for just such an effect

*off topic..is this wrapping correctly i wonder?*...hm.. n/m

SOrry ADD kicked in.. lol

anyway you can force that with certain plugins for some software music players ...
don't know if XMMS has that ability but I believe it does.
Its basically a way to separate certain sounds for hte human ear thus creating (for a
human) pleasant ambience & subtle audio cues. Kinda like multi-layered
classical music with strings in one area & subtle fluting going on elsewhere that if
you listen closely you can hear perfectly ...

Just to add an even easier approach, Remo :

On your screenshot I see the option *Ansicht* (Wiew).
Click it and then *background* (hintergrund ?) and then draw the
ruler down a bit. Then you should be able to read the lines.

Just looks like a fuxored colour scheme to me. KDE is riddled with
stuff like that in my experience, which is why I don't use it ;-)

May I suggest you investigate the following:

Todd Slater has some 9.1 RPMs that make it a cinch to install, and it
uses Gnome themes, which are much prettier and more consistent.

Remo, to me it's quite obvious that your text color is white.
Every other line is white too, so no wonder you can't see
anything. Try changing your text-color to red or blue or
something other than white. Or - alternatively - change your

I didn't realise you means white text on white background. You can,
of course, from Control Centre (not Mandrake Control Centre) play
around with text colour - it's under File Manager - but I don't know
if there's any colour that would work well with what is virtually
black and white backgrounds. Is this theme really worth fighting
for? Have you looked for another that you like to see if you still
have a problem?

[newbie] PCMCIA doesn't start after reinstall

2003-07-31 Thread Peter Pankonin
Hey all,

Well, never did figure out why my pcmcia services were going haywire (see
[newbie] Runaway pcmcia services -- above).

So I thought I would try to reinstall, but now PCMCIA doesn't start at all.
I'm not sure if this is the error or not, but the tail end of dmesg is:

Linux Kernel Card Services Kernel Version
  options: [pci] [cardbus] [pm]
ds: no socket drivers loaded!
unloading Kernel Card Services

Any ideas? Thanks.

And all kidding aside, he drops in on the newbie list now and then and gives

[newbie] Mandrake 9.1 and XFree86 4.0.3 compatibility

2003-07-31 Thread sarina
Hi,

I have a question regarding Mandrake 9.1 and XFree86, version 4.0.3.
Mandrake 9.1 came with two newer versions of XFree86 that do not plug and
play my video card correctly and I would like to know if I can then install
XFree86 version 4.0.3 (this version that came with 8.0 worked very well with
my video card). Also, is it possible to only install the driver, instead of
the whole package?

Thanks so much for all your help. Any suggestion, reference/link will be
appreciated.

As far as number 2:
I've spend a lot of time (and a lot of money) at http://computersurplusoutlet.com lately -- they're listing 8MB 72-pin EDO ram for $0.49, 32MB for $9.99 for example.

All of my older machines are maxed out -- funny when 'maxed out' means 64MB!!

Posting this to the list in case anyone can help ...

thanks for the info Miark,

1. When I attempted to install SuSE 8.2, the installation alerted me
that I did not have enough system memory and prompted me to activate my
swap partition, which I did, and I was able to proceed with the
installation. That installation failed due to hangings in YaST, but I
was able to use my swap to run the installation program. So I guess I
need an 'addition' to the network.img boot disk that will allow me to
get to a shell and type a command to activate the swap?

2. On the idea of getting more RAM; this is an OLD machine. We are
talkin' 72 pin SIMMS here. I can't find anything below $30 for 16MB
module. I have never seen obsolete technology cost so much! Plus, this
machine has to have matching capacities in each slot. Dont ask me why,
but if I put a 4MB module in slot 0 and a 8MB module in slot 1, the
machine won't even boot.

Any help on this? Anyone? Please?

Re: [newbie] NT Domain help....

2003-07-31 Thread Lanman
Frankie; IIRC, NT would have generated SID's (Secure ID's) for each user or PC the
first time each one logged onto the server. The SID contains info about the version of
Windows that the PC had before you upgraded. Now that you've upgraded to XP, that SID
conflicts with WinXP. You may have to delete the usernames of those that connect to
the NT server with that PC, and re-enter them again. The NT server will scrap the
SID'sit had for that user(s), and generate new ones for the WinXP PC as each user logs
onto the domain with it.

You didn't clearly state whether or the NT server is set up as a PDC or not. If so,
the domain name should be an FQDN ( Fully Qualified Domain Name like hammon.com), and
not just a name (Hammon). That could also be causing you a problem with log-ons. Check
out those things and get back to me. A lot of this depends on how the systems logon to
the server as well. If the NT server is a PDC ( Primary Domain Controller ), it
actually should have an FQDN like OLDKEN.HAMMON.COM, and not just OLDKEN.HAMMON. That
little difference could also be a part of the problem.

You're also correct about looking into encryption. That could easily be the problem.
Try creating a new username and password on the NT server, then add that user,
password, and workgroup to the WinXP box, and try logging into the server with the new
username. If the encrypted password is the problem, NT should give the new user a
fresh SID and allow it to connect, as if the new user was using an NT workstation, and
it will conclude that this PC has encryption for that user only. Try removing the XP's
computer name from the Server Manager as well, and give the XP box a new name, but
make the same name change on the XP box first, then reboot it, and hold it at the
logon screen. Then make the changes to the server that I've suggested and proceed with
your logon.

While you're at it, have a look at Microsoft's web-site, and see if they have info
regarding XP logons to an NT server. You should be able to narrow it down from there.
The download site for NT is here;

http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/downloads/

Get back to me.

You have to do a right-click on My Computer => Properties => Computer
Name => you have two options to use from there => you might also want to
check the NT server and make sure that the computer name exists in the
NT Domain or even remove the computer name from the domain and re-add
the computer name => else rename the workstation name and add to the
domain => of course, you're going to need to know the administrator
login and password in order to do all of this anyways.

Nah. Might even be that the "domain" is merely a glorified "workgroup"
and that the machine's names aren't even added...but I could be wrong.

Remember that Win98 and Win95 "clients" aren't treated in the domain the
same way as an NT machine is treated in the domain, so you might even
want to sit back and just recreate the client machine's ID's; since
you've got five machines, *I* would just create five new machine names
for the domain, and once each machine is upgraded - or during the
process of the upgrade, add them or connect them to the domain per each
machine's new ID...

You could always just back up the server's stuff first, then load linux
and setup SAMBA, throw the file back onto the server, and then create
each of the client machines as clients again - else setup SAMBA to be
the NT domain controller (PDC) and add the machines as per the
instructions in the Samba documentation - then you'd have a "fully
qualified NT domain" with the machines upgraded and doing their part...

Win98 is called Win98 because you need 98 MB RAM to install it.

[newbie] NT Domain help....

2003-07-31 Thread Frankie

Hi guys,

I have convinced a small business to upgrade their entire
network. windows workstations and linux server.

In order to make it easier for them, I suggested we do it in
stages, workstations first then server.

Anyway, the current network is an NT server with the
standard 5 user licenses, and 5 win95 and 98 clients.

The NT server has absolutly no service packs loaded, and its
just used as a file server.

Anway, today I upgraded one of the win98 clients (wasn't
98SE) to XP SP1 after upgrading the ram in the system to
256MB and the install want flawlessly.

However I can't get it to connect to the domain on the NT
server.
I thought this might be a case of windows XP using encrypted
passwords and such but a look in the MS helpfile on XP says
that the default is to not do that.. is that true??

IS this likely to be the problem I am having???

I used exactly the same settings in XP that the machine had
in win98.

IP: 192.168.0.13
GATEWAY: 192.168.0.1
WINS: 192.168.0.1 (which is the IP of the NT server.)
NAME: OLDKEN
DOMAIN: HAMMON

And tried to log on as the same user with the same password.
After about 2 minutes, I get a message along the lines of
the computer not being allowed access.
or access denied.

Should I need to setup a computer account on the server even
though its the same machine with all the same details only
XP instead of 98?

If I was using a different computer account, I would (on the
NT4 Server) go into Server Manager, and on the Computer
menu, click "Add to Domain". Then type in the name of the
new windows box, as an "NT Workstation or Member Server",
but the computer is using the same name.. so I should not
have to do that.

If the problem is the encryption, should I disable
encryption in XP or would I be better off trying to find the
6 service packs for NT4 ??? (any ideas where I could get
them in a hurry?)

Any advice here would be much appreciated, I can hardly
remember NT4 its been so long, and most of my experiance
with NT 4 server was when used with SBS. (and I never had to
worry about XP back then.)

I can't wait to fdisk NT and load linux on, but its a
working network and I am not permitted to take it down and
do the lot in one hit so I have to get XP working with the
existing server first and finish upgrading the workstations.

regards

Franki
