Yes, but you need to boot using a Win98 boot disk to do that AFAIK. So, get one, boot to a DOS prompt and the command you gave IS then correct. =) Cheers Jason Dennis Myers wrote: On Saturday 20 September 2003 07:41 pm, Scott wrote: Hello I want to take a slave hard drive out of a box that I gave to my daughter and install it my box. [newbie] Rant: The man pages
A lot of the questions posted in this group could be avoided if people would read man pages. And yes I understand that it is mostly newbies group. This is why I like to tell people how to use man pages. Man page, from word man(uale). >From command prompt type word man followed by command you are interesting in. For exemplae: #man ls will give you following information: LS(1)User Commands LS(1) NAME ls - list directory contents SYNOPSIS ls [OPTION]... [FILE]... DESCRIPTION List information about the FILEs (the current directory by default). Sort entries alphabetically if none of -cftuSUX nor --sort. Mandatory arguments to long options are mandatory for short options too. -a, --all do not hide entries starting with . -A, --almost-all do not list implied . and .. --author print the author of each file -b, --escape print octal escapes for nongraphic characters --block-size=SIZE use SIZE-byte blocks -B, --ignore-backups do not list implied entries ending with ~ -c with -lt: sort by, and show, ctime (time of last modification of file status information) with -l: show ctime and sort by name otherwise: sort by ctime -C list entries by columns --color[=WHEN] control whether color is used to distinguish file types. WHEN may be ‘never', ‘always', or ‘auto' -d, --directory list directory entries instead of contents, and do not derefer‐ ence symbolic links -D, --dired generate output designed for Emacs' dired mode -f do not sort, enable -aU, disable -lst -F, --classify append indicator (one of */=@|) to entries --format=WORD lines 1-58 press q to quit from man page and arrow up down to scroll. Second way to get man is to go to Konqueror and type in address bar: man:/comman_you_interested_in Notice single / after man: As a home work go and try to find what "man -k " -- Yankl Tiny IT guy. 100 % Micro$oft free. I didn't actually copy on-the-fly, I ripped the audio CD to hard drive and then burnt to CDR. Each song plays fine from the hard drive. I even deleted them and ripped again several times using various apps, all with the same result. > Happy to help if you give me more details of your exact situation. I tried burning from the command line, xcdroast, k3b, and eroaster which is the program I use the most. I also tried burning as root user. Data (backups, etc) works fine with this burner on the same CDRs. However I burnt MDK 9.1 ISOs which wouldn't work from my old CD-ROM drive but worked in my newer CD-ROM drive on another system. I haven't tried burning a different audio CD yet but will give it a go today. Maybe its just that particular audio CD. Using MDK 9.1 with a BTC 5224UI External USB 2.0 CD-Writer (52x 24x 52x). The "how" depends on the source. If you have a local mirror as I do you can do an hd.img install. Or you can do an ftp install directly from a mirror but that will be a lot slower since connection speed would be the determining factor. Do you want a "fresh" install, or an upgrade? Re: [newbie] Mozilla as default email
Hi Margot, You are sort of correct. Even though I did write "composer" I meant "compose" (no "r"), so it looked like this in the window "mozilla -compose". This opens an email ready to fill out (totally blank). If I type in "mozilla -mail" (which I did at first), all it does is open the email program, then I have to click on the "compose" button to start a new email. Since the word "compose" is on the title bar of new emails you are _composing_ I decided to try that in the field ("mozilla -compose"), and it did the trick. Now all I have to do is figure out how to make it automatically fill in the email address and maybe even the subject line. Thanks Russ Margot wrote: Russ wrote: Hi All, I want to set up Mozilla Mail as my default email program instead of Kmail. [newbie] problem installing mplayer
List members, I am trying to install mplayer and the site knight.zarb.org has the wrong version of the file on its ftp server. MCC and urpmi do not find the file: real-codecs-1.1-1plf.i586.rpm instead it has the file: real-codecs-1.2-1plf.i586.rpm and the install fails. I am wondering if the 1.2 version is misnamed or the updated version of 1.1 and this has not been updated as a required file. How should I proceed? Re: [newbie] Cheap color inkjet printer
Dale Huckeby wrote: On Fri, 19 Sep 2003, John Richard Smith wrote: that I wrote: Epson is very Linux friendly. They support Linux probably better than any other printer. I've got a Stylus C82 that I'm very happy with. In product reviews a few people complained about the noise the paperfeed makes, and it is definite but not bothersome in my opinion. What I noticed is that it works. It's very definite and precise in feeding and positioning the sheets, and mine has never jammed (in five or six months). I think you'll find that the C82 (or probably any Epson; this is my second one) will work very well with 9.1. That's what I'm running. Mandrake will know what it is and configure it for you, although you can specify quality settings at various levels of detail and expertise (in printerdrake in mcc) if you wish. Mine cost about $100. Its quality is pretty impressive. I scanned (on an Epson scanner!) and printed one of my niece's wedding photos, and it was practically indistinguishable from the real thing. Thank you Dale for your detailed experiences, these are the kind of personal experiences we all like to hear about. I'm not in the market today for a new printer , but may well think about it in the not too distant future, if I did want one today, I'm coming round to the Idea of trying out an Epson myself, well, I've had a good experience with their Epson perfection 2450 scanner, and with testermonials like yours one is encouraged. You don't mention print speeds? Don't know what the norm is. It's much faster than my Photo700, though. Print speed isn't that important to me (as long as it isn't interminable). I use the printer at a high resolution setting, so when I print out drafts of an article I'm working on (ie. in OOo), and eventually the final version, it looks really nice. I'm just aesthetic that way. I like for stuff I print out to look like print shop quality. Okay, that wasn't very helpful, so I just did a quick test, printing the same page in OpenOffice using different settings. The settings I chose from were Economy, Normal, High Quality, Very High Quality, and Photo, with a Grayscale version of each, for a total of ten settings. (These are for- inexpert-eyes combinations of the larger array of settings you can choose from if you click on the Advanced tab.) The grayscales are slightly lighter, although it's not noticeable at the higher quality settings. It is noticeable for Economy Grayscale, which has a couple of lines that are lighter than the rest. Economy, Normal, and Normal Grayscale all look pretty much the same, maybe identical to the average eye. I think Normal Grayscale actually looks slightly better than Normal, a little harder- edged. The time each takes to print one of a sample page, from the time I press the Okay button till the copy slides out, is 18 seconds for Economy Grayscale, 23 seconds for Economy, 28 seconds for Normal Grayscale, 62 seconds for Normal, about a minute and a half for High Quality Grayscale, and about 4 minutes for High Quality. Normal and High Quality probably aren't distinguishable by the casual viewer, but held side by side Normal is slightly thicker and muddier looking. Under a magnifying glass the edges would be fuzzier. High Quality has a slighter thinner, harder, sharp-edged printshop look. High Quality Grayscale is just a little lighter. Normal Grayscale is actually hard to tell from High Quality, so I might switch to that as my default. I didn't test Very High Quality or Photo or their grayscales. By the way, the times above are for the first page, which includes the time it takes for the program to communicate with the printer. I just ran page 1 and 2 at Normal Grayscale and the first page was out at 28 seconds and the second at 51, so all subsequent pages should take about 23 seconds apiece. HTH, Dale Huckeby OK so that sounds interesting. Now the time taken to create the print file and send it complete to the printer is always going to be longer in linux with ghostscript employed than in windblows, that cannot be helped, the PCL5 to PCL3 conversion takes time, and in any case each individual computer is going to vary the time according to it's power to process etc. So how about taking a 600dpi scanned file in either .pnm or .jpg of an A4 colour page(it can be anything) then send that file to printer at say 600dpi High quality, and note the time from when the file first arrives at the spooling window (kde - peripherals - printer - jobs) and you start to hear the printer load the sheet of paper to completion of the printed page. I created a 600dpi scanned A4 colour page .jpg file of 3.4Mb, in gimp, which took just over 3 minutes to print from the moment the page loaded to final ejection from the Lexmark Z53 printer. That's a lot of numbercrunchingbut sets a big task to compare performances with. How long would your Epson C82 take to process the same size and type of file

The thing that confuses me still, tho, is if I define MAILDIR=/var/spool/mail, it seems to go against the conventions in the tutorials I've read which define MAILDIR as where I tell procmail to put messages that get "caught" and are to be put elsewhere. Also, when I defined MAILDIR=/var/spool/mail, I got an error out of procmail, "could not chdir /var/spool/mail" (permissions issue?). -- HaywireMac Registered Linux user #282046 Homepage: www.orderinchaos.org ++ Mandrake HowTo's & More: http://twiki.mdklinuxfaq.org ++ Your wig steers the gig. -- Lord Buckley Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? I had 7 coasters and > thought it had something to do with that error when trying to copy a music > CD. > > So can someone please tell me if there is such a thing as "DATA ONLY" CDRs? > Just thought perhaps that's the reason for the coasters...? You want to make sure that you are either using some good generic scsi drivers in the burning program or that you have correctly identified the drive type. Small differences can result in major problems. Also, if you are trying to burn at max speed and get coasters, you may want to try specifying a reduced speed for burning. Most CD Burners try to read the available speed off the media but the media is not always accurate, I routinely get CD's that report a capable speed of 24x but end up coasters if I try to burn that fast, I have to drop it to 16x for those. If you are copying other CD's, keep in mind that Copy Protection can mess things up. If you are copying someone else's ISO, you may want to mount it as a loopback device and check the properties. I have had initial configuration difficulties with Xcdroast and K3B but have both working now without any problems or errors. Happy to help if you give me more details of your exact situation. -- Bryan Phinney Software Test Engineer Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

The filesystem needed is dependent on what type of camera since the camera is the device that is actually formatting the media. My Kodak uses a 12-bit FAT filesystem. It might help if you told us what type of camera you have so that we can do a little googling for others that may have howtos available. > H > Make me headache and broken heart. > *Or maybe "usb-storage module" not yet supporting my > camera ??? MicroSCOft has consistently shown (and continues to do so) that they have absolutely no care about the "end user" or whether or not their software is stable or secure - it's about selling, current sales and future sales. Nothing more. They're cutting their own throats and don't even realise that they're actually causing a major decline in "Windows innovation"; which is really too bad. All of this is only good for the likes of me because I'm not having to push or convince people by much about using OSS/GNU/linux based software or services or OS's...slowly but surely, "Joe Sixpack" small biz owner is realising that M$ has and is blowing brown steam, lip service and false promises... This arvo I went to the Illawarra Computer Enthusiasts first day meeting - and, as has become my ritual, recited the latest threats, viruses and trojan alerts - beginning with "I have to apologise for once again having to spout off about the gloom and doom that's out there waiting for y'all" (which the ladies love cuz of my accent) - but instead of catching shit later from some of the blokes about "Gosh, you're an MS Slammer, ain't ya?" - more and more people are seeking an alternative to either Internet Explorer, MS Outlook, MS Outlook Express - or even to Windows out and out. Remember, these ain't no techies - just "end users" that want to know more about their computers and how to use them - and today I had several requests to do a live presentation doing an installation of linux (still up in the air as to which distro I'll choose - so I might ask for the advise of some of y'all here)(bad joke)...but the interest is finally getting down to the public. They're sick and tired of the BS game. Christ, some folks there still are running Win95 because they ain't got the money to upgrade their machines and certainly ain't got the money to upgrade the damn OS (not that I didn't offer them a *demo* copy of whatever OS they wanted...)...so go figure on the TCO bit... I'll hop offa the soapbox now...just been stewing over this shit more and more and it ain't getting better...but at least I'm comforted in the fact that I ain't getting hit with no nasties, my email client ain't relaying shit for some no-name f-wit somewhere in BFE, and no one is casually capturing my keystrokes remotely...and what did I pay for my OS? Nothing. What did I pay for the three office suites I got? Nothing. Hmmm...seems that the TCO here at home is certainly a bit lower than say what the next door neighbours are having to deal with... /end silly rant stephen kuhn - owner == illawarra computer services a kuhn media australia company http://kma.0catch.com -- * This message was composed on a 100% Microsoft free computer * We expressly refuse to utilise Microsoft DRM encoded documents -- Grief can take care of itself; but to get the full value of a joy you must have somebody to divide it with. -- Mark Twain Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
