Thanks Anne I have AC97 on-board running and it uses snd-via82xx as the driver Mine does not work either except I can play the CD with grip, not xmms. Sorry not much help. Might be a route worth following - had a look at grip, and at least it recognises the CD and gives me a track listing, which is more than I get from xmms. Unless the actual reply address is listed in the body, rather than the From header. Because no spammer is going to put his real email address in the From header of his email. Usually they use a real address to get past mail servers that check if the originating from address is valid, but it is not actually theirs. However, in the case of Nigerian scams, it most likely was their real address, albeit pointed at a free email account that is basically throwaway. Your bounce message, however, is worthless. The bounce is based on the assumption that the scammer will actually try to clean his list by removing dead addresses. In almost all cases, they are using a variety of methods to target, most likely an alphabet approach where they try every possible letter combination with last name per provider hoping to hit someone. In that case, your bounce message is ignored and you will still get sent the next version when they get around to doing it. Even if they have your name on a real list somewhere, it takes real effort to clean the list and since they are involved in an illegal activity anyway, they usually wouldn't bother. Criminals are criminals because they are lazy. Nigerian scammers usually use a real From address but spammers almost never use their own from address so bounce messages are actually delivered to an innocent party who didn't spam you, he just got unlucky enough to have his email address used by a spammer. I have had this done to me several times in retaliation for complaining to get spammers accounts canceled. In cases where messages such as that start arriving, I simply filter them to /dev/null. > > If I'm wrong, then what's the "bounce" function for, anyway ? At one time, someone thought that sending a bounce message back to the originator would cause them to remove your name attempting to increase their efficiency by cleaning out dead addresses from their lists. Way back with people like Spamford, that might have actually worked. Those days are long gone now. The new crop of spammers are much less professional than guys like Spamford Wallace and they are no longer interested in efficiency but rather on getting as much traffic out of the account before it gets closed. They have absolutely nothing to gain by removing dead names, they get paid by the number of messages they send, not by the number delivered so most of them have no financial incentive to put together clean lists, use their real addresses, or get any reply traffic that is not an actual order for their dubious products, much less receive a bounce and actually process that bounce. Since ISP's watch for traffic and would regard a large number of bounce messages as default reason to shut down an account for spamming, most would not their own email address in the From field even if they did have an interest in cleaning their list. It makes it too easy to lose their connectivity. That function would have been useful about 2 or 3 years ago, it no longer is. -- Bryan Phinney Software Test Engineer Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? If you really do want to do something to hurt the spammer, learn how to read and decipher mail headers so that you can track the originating source. Usually, this is also some clueless innocent user who has either allowed their proxy server to be used by others without control, or allowed their mail server to relay messages, or as I have been seeing more and more recently, someone with a cable modem or DSL whose machine has been compromised by one of the recent viruses or worms and who is now being used as an open relay by spammers. You can notify the ISP and get the source machine closed down, at least temporarily disrupting spam operations. For some, this is a lot of trouble for very little gain since at most it is merely inconveniencing the spammer, but I do it because a little trouble still raises the cost of their operations and the whole point is to make the diminishing returns more expensive so that they will go on to some other kind of lowlife activity, like scamming senior citizens from boiler rooms with teleslime. -- Bryan Phinney Software Test Engineer Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? I have also found reports that the ATI drivers may work better for the 3D acceleration than the ati.2 gatos drivers provide? Any thoughts or experience on this subject? Also, is it possible to mix and match the drivers to use ATI's own drivers for 3D Accelation and the Gatos drivers for the TV tuner, tivo functions, remote, etc.? I have also noted that ATI's driver rpm "fglrx-glc22-4.2.0-2.5.1.i586.rpm" is built for glibc 2.2 and their check.sh script reports that I have glibc 2.3, as I understand it this shouldn't be a problem, but I'm wondering if there is a better rpm to use? or a better solution? During my attempts to decipher the gatos website I have gotten the impression that these drivers are intended to be used with XFree86 version 4.1.0 and work atleast somewhat with 4.2.0, what is this going to mean to me since I am running 4.3.0? I have since had to boot back to xp hence now that I'm running mandrake again, everything has been restarted. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but I thought there might at least be a watch tv option somewhere on a menu someplace? KDE if your wondering. Anyway, no such luck. Checked to see if MCC would now find my tuner, it didn't before and still doesn't. checked man page for gatos and found that it should have installed; - xatitv : GUI "TV in a window" application. - atitv : Simple text-mode program. - gatos-conf : GUI GATOS configuration application. Funny, I thought that AVview would have been in there somewhere but apparently not. When I tried to run xatitv, it returned xatitv: relocation error: xatitv: undefined symbol: __7IWindowPcT1PUlii so I thought maybe I need to configure first, so I tried gatos-conf. gatos-conf: relocation error: gatos-conf: undefined symbol: __7IWindowPciiT1 A quick google for this undefined symbol error turned up a thread on the cooker list archives stating that the gatos rpm does not work in 9.1. IANL the GPL neither favors, nor discriminates against any group, other than the author and users. As I understand the GPL, it does not ever make the requirement to provide the finished product, just the source code. and even then, not to the world at large for $free$ (as in free beer). Exactly - I heard this from the very mouth of Richard Stallman (who financed his move into becoming a Free Software developer by selling tapes of emacs). Mandrake are perfectly entitled to release their distribution only to paying contributors. However, the GPL allows anyone who does pay for a copy to redistribute it. Release software early to Mandrake Club members is a perfectly acceptable way to make use of that time window, and helps them give back something to people who support Mandrake financially. They are VERY newbie-ish though - > some even have trouble running Win. Should I give them 9.1 (more > stable?) or 9.2? Hello Rikona; The best way to get new programs for 9.0 would have been through the mirror trees for that release. That would of course depend upon what applications you sought though. Many people aren't even aware that the "contrib" trees exist and that all of those applications are available for install through the MCC or urpmi as soon as the source repository has been added. So saying the code dried up and blew away is slightly misleading. Stuff is still available, you just have to know where to look. I congratulate you on actually getting the "box" for 9.0, and urge you to start those 'others' the same way if possible. Explain to them that there _is_ a free version for download but that there really is added value to box sets and Club membership. Starting anyone off as of now with 9.1 wouldn't be a bad idea, but in my opinion starting them off with 9.2 would be better for them, better for you, and definitely better for MandrakeSoft. My "logic" is based on the fact that the only way to get 9.2 "immediately" would be to join the club or go to the Mandrake Store and buy a copy. Or to install cooker, but that isn't quite 9.2 and may cause a bad first impression. I'm sure that your focus is to present them with a happy experience and not have them snarling at you over a perceived broken operating system, am I correct? The word immediately above is quoted because I don't know for certain whether the mirrors accessible to members have the ISOs yet or not for the simple reason that I can't be bothered to look. I keep this machine mostly (or totally) cooked. Having said all of that; if you install a copy of the Mandrake release that you bought for those others, or help them to do so so that you are starting from something you are at least moderately familiar with, you'll both (and severally) be much happier. I'm sure you've learned from being on the list how to deal with most of the possible "gotchas." A more direct answer to the "How long?" question is simply that official support for releases is 18 months. I think. If you said Yes an update source will have been picked. If 'No' then you need to define a source. Best way to do that is go here and follow the instructions http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/index.php You can then use the Menu>Configuration>Packaging>Mandrake Update GUI to do your updates for youi. The GUI allows you to browse the available updates, read why they were issued, and to refuse them if you wish. There are a *lot* of updates for 9.1 There are already a few updates for 9.2 (The online tool does not yet allow you to select a 9.2 update source, but if you select a 9.1 source and then edit the line to say 9.2, then it will work) Generally as soon as a security flaw is found in a package in the main distro, there will be an update out for it within 24 hours. If you are a MandrakeClub member you get emailed to remind you to upgrade. > > Note:Now you are running Mdk 9.2RC2 you **must** delete your > > current 9.1 urpmi sources and add 9.2 sources. > > Oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh. A **must** that I have no idea how to > accomplish. I am in deep kimchi now, I suspect. The reason for the **must** is that different Linux releases are built using different versions of the core libraries. If you mix software sources from different releases you will confuse the system as to what libraries to install. You will either end up installing 100's of MB of software, or else totally fsck up your system. We get newbies all the time who install Cooker apps in 9.1 systems and then run into problems. So the bottom line is. If you run 9.1 only have software sources defined for 9.1. If you run 9.2, then only have sources defined for 9.2 The link above tells you how to add sources. To delete a source use the software source GUI in Mandrake Control Centre. > > Thanks Derek, > > Lance -- -- www.jennings.homelinux.net http://twiki.mdklinuxfaq.org Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? You will also come across many sites who test what browser you are using and then present you with a page suggesting you "upgrade" to Internet Explorer. We get these issues because Microsoft design the tools to build these pages and deliberately make them non IE hostile. It is a legacy of the "browser wars". To get around the problem you can either :- Educate the webmasters - A slow and generally unsuccessful task. But with MicroSoft losing the battle for market share in the PDA and mobile telephone market it is something webmasters will have to face eventually. Use a browser who tries to copy IE (and so be non compliant with standards) - Most free browsers support some of the proprietary aspects of IE, but none support them all. Or - Run IE Yes you can run IE under Linux. I keep it as my browser of last resort. IE can run under Wine. Wine is a reverse engineering of the API layer of Windows so Windows apps can run natively under Linux (Wine Is Not an Emulator == WINE, gettit?) Wine is hard to set up for a newbie and not all Windows apps run correctly under it yet. To make life easier you can buy a commerial version of Wine called Crossover Office from www.codeweavers.com It will run IE, MicroSoft Office, and a number of other apps under Linux. It is easy to install, and the supported apps run well, but do not have high hopes for any non-supported app. derek -- -- www.jennings.homelinux.net http://twiki.mdklinuxfaq.org Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? There is one script font in the set with 9.1, but it's not what I really want. Does anyone know of one I could use? I don't want to use M$ imported fonts if I can help it. Under 9.0 I had some big problems with them, displaying fine, but not printing. Anne -- Registered Linux User No.293302 Have you visited http://twiki.mdklinuxfaq.org yet? Almost all fonts are copyrighted, and so cannot be distributed without a license, and Mandrake *will not* put anything in the download edition which is not available under a GPL or similar license. Recently however the 'Vera' fonts have been released under a free license, and are quite acceptable. 9.1 was thefirst release to include the vera fonts. The second issue is that until recently X was very bad at displaying anti aliased fonts. They would appear very jagged. Recently X has improved considerably and font display is now good. However due to Apple's patent on 'bytecode interpreting' it is not legal to distribute X in the USA with it enabled. So to improve your fonts, then install the freetype2 RPM from Texstars download area, and your fonts will look a little better. (If Texstar has been added as a urpmi source, then just use Mandrake Sofware Manager to install the RPM.) > > Okay . . . I noticed last week when I was working on a table that a friend gave me for inclusion on the webpage that neither of these browsers rendered the column background colors at all. IE and Konq both handle it well. http://americanelevatorinspection.com/InspectorsOnly/FlaCodeTracking1.html There is also a flaw in the code on our homepage with the registration that I can't find. Again Konq and IE see it right, moz and opera don't. I asked an old old webpage guru (now age 19). He said it has always been thus.
