Re: [newbie] Wine
hi jamie! did you copy the config file from the soruces to your $HOMR/.wine/? you can find it in the documentation/samples/ folder. create a folder called ".wine"(this is a hidden folder) in you home dir and put the config file into it. you have to edit this things to your mountpoints: [Drive A] "Path" = "/mnt/floppy" "Type" = "floppy" "Label" = "Floppy" "Serial" = "87654321" "Device" = "/dev/fd0" if you've got a windows partition, use it. there are all needed dlls installed and so on, most of the programs will work. if you don't have a windows partition, you've to create a fake windows ;) with windows partition: hust edit the path here to your win partition [Drive C] "Path" = "/mnt/win_c" "Type" = "hd" "Label" = "MS-DOS" "Filesystem" = "win95" without: create folder fakewin on the root or somewhere else, you've to edit the path in the drive c section. [Drive C] "Path" = "/fakewin/" "Type" = "hd" "Label" = "MS-DOS" "Filesystem" = "win95" you can copy these to things: [Drive E] "Path" = "/tmp" "Type" = "hd" "Label" = "Tmp Drive" "Filesystem" = "win95" [Drive F] "Path" = "${HOME}" "Type" = "network" "Label" = "Home" "Filesystem" = "win95" these things are the most importent!!: [wine] "Windows" = "c:\windows" "System" = "c:\windows\system" "Temp" = "e:\" "Path" = "c:\windows;c:\windows\system;e:\;e:\test;f:\" "Profile" = "c:\windows\Profiles\Administrator" you've to edit the paths corectly! if you're using wine without a windows partition, you've to create all these folders on your own! if you dont, wine wont work! and thats the way the cookie crumbles ;) i did these things and wine worked. but my photoshop isnt working. version 6 AND 7 don't work! i could install them, but cannot start them... :( if you get it work, please let me know! hope it helpes greets from the called sweitzerland ;) remo Zitat von Jamie Taylor <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: > Has anyone had any success at getting Wine to work properly. > I've compiled the source and installed it then ran winesetuptk but I can't > seem to get any Windows programs to work. > I will soon try to migrate all of my PC stuff to Linux based programs as I > want to get windows off my pc ASAP. > I want to use Photoshop and a few other programs like Acid and Sound Forge. > If I had the cash I would get Crossover Office but I don't so any links or > help would be much appreciated. > > Cheers > > Jamie Taylor > > P.S. please do not say use The Gimp because I am used to Photoshop and I > don't > like The Gimp's user interface. > > Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Ok, but if you want to use procmail only for filtering out some messages, you must put back in the original mailbox all the mail you want to read with Mozilla. If that's really Mark's intent, the only thing to do is change the line saying DEFAULT=$MAILDIR/inbox to DEFAULT=$ORGMAIL (basically reducing procmail's role to nothing, with the attached .procmailrc). Any mail redistributed to other mailboxes will never be seen by Mozilla. You've already received a link for Frank's Corner. Wine developers hang out and answer questions on the wine newsgroup at comp.emulators.ms-windows.wine. There is a mailing list for wine-users which can be subscribed to at http://www.winehq.com/mailman/listinfo/wine-users -- wine developers also answer questions there. There are two issues with regard to Wine. Since it's alpha software, one issue is to get it properly working. Did you run winecheck after compiling and installing source? That will identify possible areas where your Wine may be having trouble. The second issue is getting your applications to work under Wine. Not everything does. Not every dll and api for MS-Windows has been created. If your software needs something that hasn't yet been done, it probably won't work well, assuming that it works at all. You might inquire on Wine lists if anyone else has gotten your program favorites to work. A major advantage offered by CodeWeavers is the fact that their developers are paid to work on those problems. If they take on your software, it is guaranteed that it will be able to work (because they make certain all the dlls and apis it needs are created). It is possible to interest developers on the Wine lists in your software, but they are doing it as volunteers and they will need a lot of input from you in order to succeed. Whether or not you get your programs to work under Wine has a lot to do with how much time and effort you're willing to put into it. I've had no problem with getting Wine itself to work, however, and to run quite a few programs, though not all that I would like it to run. I'm not running any of the ones you mention. deedee Registered Linux User #327485 Visit "WordStar & GNU/Linux" http://www.wordstar2.com Also, see the WordStar Users Group http://www.wordstar2.com/cbabbage/wordstar Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Permissions solution
Derek et al, Thanks for all the suggestions. I was finally able to get this working with the help from a good friend who is basically a Linux God. Incidentally you can check his site our here: linode.com. Anyhow, I edited the appropriate /etc/fstab line adding my userid for my user account after the codepage part. Went something like: ..codepage=850,rw,uid=500 0 0 After un-mounting /mp3s and remounting all, everything works perfectly. I have booted to windows to test things there but it should be okay. Thanks all, hopefully one day I can answer someone elses question.. anyone need Web development help? lol -A On Tue, 2003-10-14 at 17:02, Derek Jennings wrote: > On Tuesday 14 Oct 2003 10:44 pm, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > > (Man, half the e-Mails I'm getting today are bounces from > > the list. By default, codepage 437 is used. /quote To be honest I do not know why codepage is set to 850. It is just what Mandrake sets it to by default. The important option from your point of view is umask=0 That will allow all users to read/writeto your vfat partition. The 'quiet' option stops you getting messages from konqueror complaining that vfat does not have any permission bits to set. derek -- -- www.jennings.homelinux.net http://twiki.mdklinuxfaq.org Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? The news is definitely encouraging. I will try to help here by translating excerpts from an article that currently appears on the online version of an Israeli daily: "The Finance Ministry announced today that it suspends the agreement with the software giant Microsoft for the purchase and upgrade of software (mainly for personal computers) for the government ministries. The reason for the decision is mainly monetary, but it also has to do with the way Microsoft products are priced and the government's computer infrastructure. At the beginning of 2001, the government signed a 3 year agreement with Microsoft which will come to an end at the end of the current year. The agreement allowed the government to use Microsoft software for a yearly fee. According to the Finance Ministry the agreement may have had a negative impact for the selection of certain products due to the fact that the agreement requires the purchase of packages of software. Also, the recent cuts in the budget of the government ministries impacts the ability to finance the agreement. Another reason for the suspension of the agreement is the plan the government has for a wide use of alternative software, mainly Sun's Open Office. The price of these software products is much lower then Microsoft's software. It should also be noted that lately Sun Israel with the help of IBM and others is investing much effort to make Open Office work reasonably well in Hebrew, something that will allow the software to compete with Microsoft's in the Israeli market. There is also plan to move the government ministries to use Open Source software. This means the wide use of the Linux OS and software running under Linux." I hope this clarifies the matter somewhat. Even though no mention is made of Antitrust, it is still encouraging to see the government of Israel thinking of using Linux to cut cost. Recently there have been huge cuts in the government budget and when there is little money, people start looking at Linux. Avi Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Actually, though PDF is proprietory and Adobe can change the file internals any time it wishes it's also become ubiquitous so I suppose I'll just have to live with it. :-) My concerns with PDFs tend more to their usefulness as opposed to HTML/XML. In most cases they are little or no markups in them which means that flipping back and forth can often be an exercise in futility. Well designed and linked HTML, on the other hand, makes it easy to look up sidebars and such without the necessity of using the somewhat suspect indexing of PDFs. This is particularly true in tabbed browsers. What PDFs are useful for and needed for is the printing of a document in a familiar format (book). It's this they excel in. ttfn John Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

If you have the space on your system I'd recommend that you ftp the 9.2 tree (all of it including contrib) from any mirror you can find it on to a local directory and make a boot floppy or CD using the hd.img from /Mandrake/base. Current cooker on the mirrors is 9.2, plus a few updates. 9.1 users can also use cooker to update to 9.2, just 'urpmi urpmi' first, then get the rest. Don't be put off by the total number of mb's urpmi displays. That's installed space, not actual d/l. As a rule of thumb, the amount you'll be d/l'g is about 40% of the installed space. Since you're upgrading (ie, replacing packages) there'll be little to no additional disk space needed. The challenge will be finding a good mirror. (hint: European mirrors are better) http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/cookerdevel.php3 I'm really disappointed 9.2 is available to Club members thru torrent and not iso's by ftp. Torrent sux! As does any p2p scheme for big files when getters far outnumber givers. And given the nature of asyncronous BB connections, givers upload speeds will be much slower than the getters d/l speeds. Many users will see d/l speeds slower than dialup, while their own upload speed will be max'd out. And, after sufferin thru a long slow d/l of the iso's by torrent, you just might find the md5sums won't check. Another p2p problem with getting large files from many sources (givers). If you don't want to update to 9.2 from cooker mirrors, then about the only viable way to get the iso's is to wait till the end of this month when the iso's should be available by ftp, after the boxed sets are shipping. I think that article would serve well to be in Twiki. Just be sure to get the author's permission before pushing it to a PDF. I was going to wait until the owner or request email was getting forwarded properly, but since this came up: There were no "owners" for newbie, so Charles put me on the owner list so that someone (besides him) could deal with list issues. There is someone sub'd as [EMAIL PROTECTED] which looks like it might be the cel phone number. (actual numbers witheld to protect the guilty) I sent a message to that address, and if i don't here back, i'll unsub it. I just got this in response to the mail: Short Message delivery answer: Message for +### with identification ### has been delivered on 2003-10-14 at 08:57:41. Well, i'd say that's a cel phone Anyway, if anyone has trouble subing or unsubing, i can help with that now. (unfortunately, i have no power over the sympa issues...) eric Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Anyhow, undelete is not doable, and/or you won't be too happy with the results anyhow. If the files you accidently deleted belong to a package, just use 'rpm -Uvh --force package.rpm' (same version/patch level as already installed) to replace the missing files. See 'man rpm' to see just what --force does. This is just about the only proper use of --force. In 9.1 kio_fish is installed as standard, and according to rpmfind.net there is an RPM for Suse called kio_fish so it might be easier to do it with the ssh server on Mandrake. You could always use gftp instead of kio_fish. Just start gftp and log onto the ssh server. Just remember to select the drop down box on the right as ssh. Not as pretty as konqueror, but it will get the job done. As for the "Reply To" in your posts. :- Normally when people reply to an email the reply will go to the same address the mail came from. But if you fill that in the "Reply To" field then when people reply to your mails they will always go to that address. This is not usually an issue since normally the addresses are the same. But when you post to a mailing list the "From" address is that of the mail server. In this case [EMAIL PROTECTED] When I reply to a post I want the reply to go to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Only trouble is your Reply To overrides it, and I have to re-address the post to make sure it goes to the correct destination. Of course that is less trouble than writing this paragraph explaining why "Reply To" is a pain ;-) derek -- -- www.jennings.homelinux.net http://twiki.mdklinuxfaq.org Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? On Tuesday 14 October 2003 08:02 am, Yoel P. Krigsman wrote: > If I choose this method, do i have to install the whole packages over > again? like Opera, Vmware etc.. Probably not, it doesn't overwrite the directories, IIRC, it just updates the packages that are there. However, you may not get a working system since newer packages won't be overwritten and I don't think that Texstar stuff will coexist with the regular Mandrake stuff, at least not all of it. You can always download the Texstar rpm's manually and run RPM to install them to try to get your system working again. Funny, this is the first time I have heard of packages getting removed by installing updates, normally, if the package install doesn't work, you still have the original files there. You might want do an ls in /usr/bin/ to see if the mcc application is there but just renamed to something like mcc.rpmold. -- Bryan Phinney Software Test Engineer Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Good Article on Linux Filesystems
I checked out the article, and I can definitely add to the newbie perspective and say that it would have been a lot of help had I read it before installation. I've cleared up a lot of file system questions I had just by reading that article. -A On Tue, 2003-10-14 at 00:06, Eric Huff wrote: > > > http://newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/10/07/196222&mode=thread&tid=23 > > > > Excellent article! Re: [newbie] Good news .. and a question
Thank you all for replying and suggesting changes to my line of thinking. That is exactly what I was looking for since at this point it's hard to trust anything I think up on my own. I've taken everyone's advice (which thinking about it now, makes perfect sense) and have created a directory inside my /home/user directory to hold my backgrounds. Works a peach. I'm still unclear, on how to handle the /mp3s directory/partition. I don't mind storing all the mp3s under /home if that is the best thing to do permissions wise/global wise, but at this point, I wouldn't know how to move that directory and it's mount point to /home. If someone could be a little more detailed, that would help a lot. Thanks, again. Not sure what I'd do without this list. | aaron west | www.trajiklyhip.com On Tue, 2003-10-14 at 06:20, Derek Jennings wrote: > On Monday 13 Oct 2003 11:54 pm, Russ wrote: > > John Wilson wrote: > > >>As a second example, I downloaded a really nice wallpaper and when > > >>attempting to copy the wallpaper to the /usr/share/wallpapers directory > > >>I get another access denied message. > > > > > > As someone else has pointed out it's bad form to mess around with > > > permissions outside your home directory.
