Evidently HiMandrake _does_ have some sort of an arrangement with Mandrake.
See the November 5 post by fbhancilhon (AKA Francois -- IIRC, he is
Mandrake's marketing HMFIC). It's partway down this page:

http://www.mandrakeclub.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Splatt_Forum&file=viewtopic&topic=13891&forum=12&start=0

Let me see if I've got this straight:
1. Mandrake invented the Mandrake Club two years ago as a way of resolving its
cash problems.
2. In order to increase Club membership, Mandrake recently sweetened the pot
by allowing only Club members to download 9.2 for the first few weeks after
release.
3. Mandrake's distributor (HiMandrake) gets the Club-only files, burns some
CD's, and offers them on e-bay _before_ the ISO's are available to man + dog.
Sorta defeats the Club exclusivity feature, doesn't it?
4. The same distributor also shuts down anyone else who tries the same
scam^H^H^H^Hdeal, claiming to have exclusive rights.
5. Mandrake's marketing guy says, "No big deal."

(11-07) 10:47 PST WASHINGTON (AP) _

A drive to permanently ban Internet access taxes stopped dead in the
Senate on Friday, stuck in a clash over whether the legislation would
shear millions from the budgets of state and local governments.

The problem arose over the definition of "Internet access" -- services
that connect consumers to the Internet. The strongest proponents for a
permanent ban want to make sure that all access technologies -- from
phone lines to DSL to cable modems -- get equal freedom from taxation.

Opponents said the definition supporters crafted to incorporate new
technologies was too vague and could go too far -- eliminating taxes on
many types of Internet technologies and telecommunications delivered
through the Internet.

Several states currently collect taxes on Internet access services, and
opponents of the ban are worried that the legislation could limit this
revenue source.

"You could see billions and billions of dollars lost," said Sen. Byron
Dorgan, D-N.D. "Definitions are everything."

The two sides scrapped a planned Senate debate and instead began
negotiations, hoping to strike a compromise by next week.

The proponents of the permanent ban offered a compromise -- a temporary
extension of the ban for about 5 years, as long as the new bill treats
all Internet technologies equally.

"If you can have the set of definitions that ensure competitive
environment, that you don't favor one set of providers over another, I'm
willing to consider a very significant concession," said Sen. Ron Wyden,
D-Ore.

There's a lot that we don't consider interent that would be affected,
too. For instance, SWBell is planning on converting their telephone
service to VoIP. As such, it would be exempt from taxes if the internet
tax ban was in place. So, if you uses Sprint, you would have to pay
tax, if you used SWBell, you wouldn't! That is what the debate is
about, in ensuring competition. In addition, the internet tax ban in
it's current form would effectively remove from taxation almost all
kinds of communication networks and would thusly seriously affect the
already dismal tax situation in many states.

[newbie] ctrl-shift c not working in mozilla-based apps

2003-11-08 Thread anton
hi,
I subscribe to a number of mailing lists and get in excess of 300 per
day. The shift-ctrl c is invaluable in getting them all read real quick :-).
It was working but since upgrading to 9.2, and then reinstalling 9.2
twice (I have had issues...) I have been unable to use it. It used to
work with both mozilla and thunderbird and now with neither.

I think the keyboard setting may be the issue. I am not American, and do
not like having my default language in US English, as I speak a dialect
of British English (NZ). So my default language is Oceania English. The
keyboard is US I think though. I think... How do I find out? What is the
difference? Could that be the problem? Is it a 9.2 issue and not a
language setting issue?
Any pointers much appreciated.
Anton

PC Chips is the top selling mobo where I live, so I've installed
Mandrake on more PC Chips boards than anything else. There are no
particular problems -- at least not with the ones I've done -- so don't
worry and just give it a go.

The only thing that didn't come on the Mandrake disks was the driver for
the winmodem that comes on the board. Many folks on this list will tell
you that you are better off buying a real modem, and I suppose they're
right, but I had no trouble following the instructions for my PCTel
onboard winmodem, which works better in Linux than it ever did in
Windows.

Mind you, I wish I had a decent motherboard and real hardware. But PC
Chips installs and works no worse in Linux than it does in Windows.

PC Chips puts their mobo model number in tiny print in one of the
corners of the board right next to a screw hole. You're looking for
something like M748LMRT, which is what the mobo I'm using now says.

The PC Chips website is . They have a page
for every mobo they've made, including the old discontinued stuff. The
page for my board, for example, is
, which I mention so that you
can simply change my model number for yours and go straight to your
board's page. There you will find a downloadable manual for your mobo
and the latest BIOS to flash if you're a risk taker.

In case your modem is a PCTel,
 will help you get it
going in Linux.

I hate to say it but the best hardware detection tool I know is the
hardware manager in Windows. It's buried somewhere in My PC -
Properties, and can be printed for reference. It's the last thing I did
before wiping my Windows.

Hope this helps.

[newbie] Video eMac problems

2003-11-08 Thread Katherine Catalano
Hello list. Just joined today.

So, I was trying to install Mandrake 9.1 PPC on my eMac (G4), and ran
into some problems. I was getting a black screen instead of the GUI. I
tried "install-gui-benh text video=ofonly", and that got me through the
installer fine.

Now when I want to boot into Mandrake, I get the black screen again.
"linux video=ofonly" will get me to -bash but that's about it. No GUI.
Any suggestions?

Create a mount point like say, /mnt/oldhome as root:

# mkdir -p /mnt/oldhome

Then mount the partition as root with:

# mount -t /dev/hdc9 /mnt/oldhome

where is one of: ext2, ext3, reiserfs or whatever.

You should now see your files under /mnt/oldhome.

Try
urpmq --sources filename

and see if it shows up.

filename doesn't have to be the entire name.

You might need to update the sources, which can be done in the gui,
or with

urpmi.update -a

You should probably do this with rpmdrake closed.

Two possible reasons come to mind.

1/ The sources are not set up correctly.

2/ Python is already installed.

[newbie] Modem Connection Secure ???

2003-11-08 Thread The Other
11/08/03

To get my Winmodem to connect to the ISP, I have to open up a
SuperUser terminal window, configure the modem, and start WVdial. I
then minimize the terminal window and run my Internet applications
as a regular user.

I have to do this sequence every time after I've shut down the Linux
box, which is several times in a day. (Any ideas why I lose the
modem configuration every time I reboot?)

Even the WVdial documentation that I've found says it's extremely
difficult to launch WVdial as a regular user, and doesn't go into
the exact details since they vary so widely depending on the
installation.

Question: Do I have a security problem doing things this way?
(While connected to the Internet, I do have a SuperUser terminal
session running that is managing the WVdial program.)

TIA, The Other

Thanks for clearing my doubt. Indeed I've been away form this list for a while
and re-joined only recently, that's why I missed all the fuss! My fault.

Anyway, I have upgraded to the 2.4.22-21mdk kernel and as soon as I rebooted
I've noticed a trouble with my dvd drive which worked fine until yesterday
(/dev/scd1 - it's actually hdd, scsi emulated): I cannot access to any cd/dvd
I put into the drive.

When I type:
# cd /mnt/cdrom2
it spins up and seems to read the contents but when I type
# ls
the discs are empty!

I'm puzzled. Even 'cos my other drive (hdc, /dev/scd0) works just fine.
Could it be a just occurred hardware fault or something to do with the new
kernel?

[newbie] I Fubared 9.2 upgrade

2003-11-08 Thread Marc
This morning I did a upgrade installation of 9.2 from 9.1 without first
backing up my files, yeah I know that was a mistake. After the upgrade when I
rebooted I hot a bunch of error messages and could not boot to 9.2 That was
about the time that I decided I had better back up my files before going any
further.
I then went and deleted my winblows partision and installed 9.1 on it
thinking that I could get to my data on my old partision and back it up to A
CD before doing anything else.
How do I get to my old home partision hdc9 to back up the old files?
I went to file:/mnt and I don't see it there.

Thanks in advance

/usr/bin/perl is usually a simlink

As yu can see from my mdk9.0 box:

 ls -la /usr/bin/perl
lrwxr-xr-x1 root root5 Nov  7  2002 /usr/bin/perl ->
perl5*

Its a symlink to perl5
which in turn is symlink to:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] validator]# ls -la /usr/bin/perl5
lrwxr-xr-x1 root root9 Nov 7 2002 /usr/bin/perl5
-> perl5.8.0*

perl5.8.0

the reason for that is pretty simple, /usr/bin/perl should always point
to the perl binary on your system, regardless if what perl you have
installed.

Its possible that you have lost the symlinks.. check to see if they are
there.

Yes Derek
I have the ports opened as the samba server actually works and I can
access the samba shares from w2k when I connect based on IP. The
NetNeighbourhood does not say anything about any available share.. So
the name is not resolved correctly. Unfotrunetly I fail to connect to
w2k shares using smb

Also I noticed just here that the IP it fails to send packets is
10.0.0.255

I have 2 network cards
eth0 connected to dsl modem (and having local ip 10.0.0.10)
eth1 is serving lan (having local ip 192.168. )
And if there are some nameservers broadcasting itselt then it should be
sent to 192.168.1.255 I think. So I have some more conf files to dig...

I added the wins support = yes (it wasnt there)
Now I have to wait til my laptop gets home again to test it.

I could not get a Linux driver for my _really_ obscure webcam. I could
not get the winblows software to work with wine so in the end I bunged
XP on a old Digital Ppro 200 and networking it to my server. XP seems to
be able to manage it and it runs quite happily for months at a time
without any intervention.

You can get webcam server stuff for Mandrake. I guess its just a case of
making sure you can get a driver and working out how to set up the
program.

Wow, a pekwm rpm...

There's a couple features i'd like from the newer builds, but 1.3
works so well and i haven't had the extra time to kill changing the
config files...

I just cvsd today's: i'll see if i get to it before a new one comes
out!
