You can change the theme by using: sh switch-themes to pick a new one from the available sets. I didn't say the question was unreasonable Mike, far from it. I actually answered the question. [OT]: It was posted by others; then restated by myself, that auto run is an option that needs to be turned on in the default KDE CD player (KsCD) in Mandrake whereas apparently Red Hat does this by default. I'd rather choose whether or not to allow the behaviour, but it's a matter of personal choice. Sorry about my confusion as to which thread I was responding to. But since this is listed in the archives as a new thread, even though Adam made reference to another thread, and since the subject of *this* thread is "Uninstall" I directed my comments to that subject. I did think JoeHill's post might have been construed as a bit 'off-putting.' Possibly. I really didn't think it was meant as a "flame" though. In fact I had a chuckle over it. The rest of the posts I made in this overly long and seemingly pointless thread were direct responses to Adam's comments and questions. If he or anyone found my remarks offencive; I apologize. BTW if anyone is becoming so sensitive they can't stand to read posts that were never meant as personal attacks let me know. I'll happily walk away from the newbie list again. Not a threat, not even a warning, a statement that I don't need this crap. Since I refuse to be other than myself, the "P.C Police" can kiss my a$$ets. [newbie] ssh + X forwarding to Windows
Hello everyone, happy Thanksgiving I was reading up on interesting topics and noticed something that I wanted to try, which is X tunneling/forwarding over a secure connection using ssh and putty on Windows. I've used Putty a number of times with cuccess to run my linux computer remotely. As I type I'm at my mother's house on a Windows machine with a new Putty installed, and I found a low cost X server (Mi/X) free for 15 day trial. I have the X server up and running but I can't get the program running on my host Linux pc to display at the remote location. I realize that it has to do with setting the DISPLAY variable - should it be set to my IP address? Or is the tunneling using another "display" of my remote i.e. 198.144.206.157:1? I tried a number of things and I get "cannot open display" after a few seconds or even minutes. David E. My porblem, since I want to upgrade 'half' my system to XP, it won't work with XP, something about TAPI not working for earlier models. I was wondering. Can I install a second cheap PCI winmodem on another com port to use just for windown XP, and use the Blaster modem for only linux? Or will they confilct? What would be the point of it, you might just as well buy an inexpensive hardware controlled modem that will work easilly in both OS's and any future OS you may wish to change to. I have no experience with XP (and I intend to keep it that way), but when XP was first released, a number of people were shocked to find that there were no drivers for even relatively new hardware. It's possible that Creative decided not to continue support for this modem since it was an ISA product. (It's called a "marketing opportunity"). To the OP: Some things to get that critter to work under XP: 1. Some ISA modems have jumpers to defeat plug-n-play so that you can set the com port and interrupt manually. That was the only way that I could get my old Zoom 2919 to work in Win98SE. 2. A google search for "blaster di5601-1 XP" only came up with 16 total hits, which is not too encouraging. One was to http://list.driverguide.com/list/company244/. You might pursue that -- it does involve mandatory registration. -- cmg Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Should be OK, though you may have to disable your hardware modem in the Windows hardware profile. I don't know about XP, but this works in Win98. That's why the WinModems > are a tough breed to get working with Linux. > > The best place to read up on them is http://www.linmodems.org/. I have a 536ep modem and I managed to get it working previously (up to 9.1). However, before it would work with kppp I had to launch minicom, wait for 30 sec, then close minicom and launch kppp. Failing to do this iniialisation with minicom would cause the keyboard to stop responding and the only way out was to press the power button. The same happens in 9.2 but, in addition, the speed is now so low as to make it virtually unusable, It always worked fine with XP, still does. But for linux I have bought an serial modem. First off I bought an el cheapo from ebuyer for GB pounds 15, this worked great for short periods, but after about 15 mins it would slow right down to a crawl, it also got very hot, which I suspect caused the slow down. This week I have bought a Hayes Accura GB pounds 60, so far it is working flawlessly. YMMV but I think the Hayes is worth it for the lack of trouble alone HTH Pete ARdnamurchanSCotland Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

In your case I think the message suggests some sort of printer communication problem, mine suggests some sort of file type problem, but in both cases I don't think that the actual message is really saying anything much, other than it's an error message, better look into it. One simple first step might be to just take some .ps file (post script) any one will do, and open a terminal and do something like, lpr .ps and see if anything actually prints off, if it does it suggests that your printer is connected OK and that the problem is either in the app that created the print job, or in some aspect of spooling or pre spooling(kde for instance has build some sort of pre-spooling setup and recently made some alterations, which doesn't seem to work well, at least for me) but I note noone else seems to reporting the same problem. If on the otherhand you get nothing with lpr .ps it suggests to me that maybe you have either a problem with your printer or the way the OS recognises and impliments it's connection. If this is the case I would check ink levels and such like first off , and if they seem Ok, then I think I would delete each entry and rebuild the driver setup again in something like kde CC, or MCC. I'm not being very specific here, but maybe this is a starting point, since it's necessary to isolate the various aspects of a complicated printer setup in linux, and having isolated the various aspects, attempt to solve them.
