[newbie] nforce Chipset and Mandrake 9.2
Hi all, Is anyone using or had experience getting the nforce chipset to work under 9.2? I downloaded the nVidia driver (NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0261.tar.gz) but I haven't been able to compile it. I got a bunch of compile errors. I upgraded from 9.1 and my soung and ethernet both were working just fine. Any suggestions? I haven't had a chance to do more than boot his cd this time tho. It took me two nights to get openoffice to compile on gentoo. :P But he does nice work. There are a lot of positive reviews on it. But it's based on mandrake, so let's not forget the wonderful os under it as well. Buutt, having said that. I've been staying in gentoo for the last 3 weeks or so since I installed it from stage 1. I have to say, I love it! But as a recovering cooker addict, I ran pclinuxos as my main os for a couple weeks before I put gentoo on here too. I guess I'll put preview 4 on it's own partition tonight tho, and keep preview 3 around as well since libdvdcss was still included in that one. :P l8r g8r, -s Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? just a thing... the linux secure option from the boot loader means some thing like on windows fail proof mode... where you have running only the escential services and is used to fix some thing that doesnt work... like video settings or services that hang the system. the secure option doesn't mean about information security. Before you change any settings in the samba configuration files, backup the original one, that is cp /etc/samba/smb.conf /etc/samba/smb.conf.orig. There's a lot of useful information in there, and you may want to read it through for options later when you have a basic running system but want it improved. If you use any tool at all to set the configuration it will overwrite the file, so the backup is really useful. Basically, once you have done that, have a go at setting it up. You'll find some help on the TWiki too. Webmin is a tool that many use for configuration - that's on the disks as well. Hi, I want to install the latest Java runtime Environment (JDK) from Sun, which is a selfextracting rpm.bin(?) file. How do I install it? With the rpm manager? Any advise is most appreciated. I also have a .bin file to install the Morphon CSS Editor and it's just not obvious to me what to do with it. The install instructions say nothing about installing the .bin file, that is supposed to be an installer including the JRE. I'm going to try to install the JRE from Sun and then install the tar.gz from Morphon Regards, Marco -- "Tell me about these oppressed masses. What's got them so worked up ?" Re: [newbie] Linux behind proxy
I've never had much luck with MDK's internet connection wizards, I find it easier to configure by hand. There are various places where to configure the proxy. For Mozilla, you go to the Edit->Preferences->Advanced->proxy and specify there the name and port of the proxy. I guess there's something similar for Galeon/Konqueror etc. For command line programs like wget/lftp you set up some shell environment variables, like ftp_proxy=http://:@proxy.name: (my proxy allows only ftp over http, that's why I have http there). You can put these entries in your .bashrc configuration file. I can be more precise if you need. raffaele [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi people, i have installed Mandrake 9.2 and i need to use the internet access over the network. Re: [newbie] windows networking
To set up a file server for windows machines you need to install the samba server package - it's on your MDK installation disks, use Software Package Management from Mandrake Control Center. To configure samba server you should read the Samba-HOWTO, just to know what you're doing. To check if the NIC is configured correctly, open a terminal window and type: /sbin/ifconfig This will print out the current configuration of the NIC, something like this: eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:11:22:33:44:55 inet addr:xx.xx.xx.xx Bcast:xx.xx.xx.xx Mask:xx.xx.xx.xx UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 Notice "UP" and "RUNNING", they tell you the NIC is properly configured. Then look at the "inet addr", it will tell you if the DHCP server provided you with a valid IP address. If you don't see UP and RUNNING, or the IP addresses are invalid, then you might have a problem with DHCP server. raffaele [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I have Mandrake Linux 9.2 up and running on a PC I hope to use as a file server. On the other hand there are gazillions of computers on the net that do respond to ping, so why should yours be any more likely to be attacked. As regards being annoyed by the log entries you could try putting an entry in /etc/shorewall/rules like :- DROP net fw icmp8 That should drop pings silently, and will override the default action in shorewall/policy which is to drop and log. I have not tested the above because I have just started using ulogd to put all my firewall hits into an SQL database (instead of syslog) which can then be interrogated by a neat application called Webfwlog. Re: [newbie] windows networking
Hi, on my prior Mandrake sistems (9.1,9.0,8) if you whant to use the DHCP option, you must have a HDCP server that provides you the control of the addresses over youre net. So if you don't have it, the easyest thing you can do is use the static ip address assigned by youre selfe. For using the linux PC as a server it must have the 2 network cards on it and one must be connected to the adsl device and the other to youre network hub or switch. then use the DrackGW option of the mandrake control center on Networks and Internet. This is and wizz that will guide you to the sucssesfull internet sharring. (my english isn't good at all but i'll do my best to help you.) [newbie] windows networking
I have Mandrake Linux 9.2 up and running on a PC I hope to use as a file server. I have two additional PCs running Windows 98SE in a peer-to-peer network configuration. One of them also supplies an ADSL connection to all PCs in my network (I used to have 3 running 98). The ADSL PC runs WinRoute Lite, acting as a DHCP server, to accomplish the internet sharing. (Ultimately, I'd like the Linux PC to do that and act as a firewall as well, but one thing at a time here!) I am having a hard time getting my Linux PC on my windows network, to say nothing of getting it internet access. In the LAN configuration screen, I set my NIC to DHCP and click "Activate," but I get nothing. I must be missing something... any ideas? Is there a good tutorial available somewhere that tells me how to accomplish this? Any common problems I need to be aware of? Linux is completely foreign to me!!! [newbie] Mozilla - that resource hog!
Hi all, I'm running MDK 9.1 on my workstation. I usually leave it on 24/7 for the week but shut it down on the weekends. Usually between Wednesday and Friday Mozilla becomes *painfully* slow. I'm talking about writing a sentance and watching it appear over the course of 10-30 seconds... Scrolling and simply browsing is also slowed dramatically. I'm running gkrellm and it indicates that my CPU is pinned at 100% during this slow period. I thought that maybe if I upgraded Mozillia that may help. So I took out the old and installed Mozilla 1.5 XFT. Still no luck. This is going to sound silly, but the only way I've found to fix the problem is to shutdown all instances of Mozilla and start the program back up. Seems simple enough, but when I'm doing a lot of research leaving the windows open is much more convenient then book marking or history browsing... Even after I shut it down it still can spike the CPU to 80-100% - is that part normal? Any ideas here? Thanks in advance, Tango Echo __ Do you Yahoo!? [newbie] Kmail hangs - mdk 9.1 - fix or better search option?
Hi all, I have Mandrake 9.1 installed (w/latest Texstar KDE). When I input a search string and hit search Kfind hangs. When other windows are dragged in front of it, then removed, the Kfind window becomes distorted... Is there a fix for this or can you recommend a better search tool? Thanks! Re: [newbie] Shorewall - OK to accept ICMP type 8 from all?
Better not if your machine has a public static IP address. ICMP type 8 (ping) can be used to discover the IP address through ping 'storms', and then use it for attacks to higher level protocols. Also there is the ping of death attack that can crash your machine - although maybe newer TCP/IP implementations are immune. I'm sure there is a way to request IPtables not to log the rejected/dropped ping packets, but I wouldn't be able to tell you OTOH. Maybe somebody else already knows. raffaele [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi All Can someone please tell me if accepting all ICMP type 8 packets from all (including internet) poses much of a security threat. Is this one of those semi-harmless, non-fatal > messages that I can safely ignore? You're right Ron, no harm is done and I agree, it IS really annoying scrolling thru logs/email with hundreds of lines unnecessarily. You can either safely ignore these messages or, if you don't mind losing supermount, avoid the error messages by adding "noauto" to the zip drive entry in /etc/fstab. I chose to add "noatuo" for my cdrom drive a few days ago but I think you may soon become annoyed if you like supermount and use your zip drive often. So far I've only used my cdrom drive once since the change so it has bothered me too much yet and its soo nice getting shorter log files.
