Actually, I'm pretty sure that's correct. If there's no server running
it would not detect a machine, nor list it. LN just looks for samba
servers.

[newbie] nforce Chipset and Mandrake 9.2

2003-12-03 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi all,
Is anyone using or had experience getting the nforce chipset to work under 9.2?
I downloaded the nVidia driver (NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0261.tar.gz) but I haven't been able
to compile it. I got a bunch of compile errors. I upgraded from 9.1 and my soung and
ethernet both were working just fine.

Any suggestions?

Yeah, it's great. I installed it from preview 2 and rsync'd preview 3
before there was an installer and it was great then. I haven't had a
chance to do more than boot his cd this time tho. It took me two
nights to get openoffice to compile on gentoo. :P But he does nice
work. There are a lot of positive reviews on it. But it's based on
mandrake, so let's not forget the wonderful os under it as well.

Buutt, having said that. I've been staying in gentoo for the last 3
weeks or so since I installed it from stage 1. I have to say, I love
it! But as a recovering cooker addict, I ran pclinuxos as my main
os for a couple weeks before I put gentoo on here too. I guess I'll
put preview 4 on it's own partition tonight tho, and keep preview 3
around as well since libdvdcss was still included in that one. :P

[newbie] mdk kernel enterprise src?

2003-12-03 Thread Lloyd D Budd
mdk-9.2

I am trying to get a closed source (VPN client) kernel extension
working. I would like to use kernel-enterprise-2.4.22.21mdk-1-1mdk, but
I need the source.

I see there is
kernel-2.4.22.21mdk-1-1mdk.src.rpm (39303204)
kernel-source-2.4.22-21mdk.i586.rpm (42200593)

I wonder about the size difference :-(

urpi only finds the 2nd. I tried that one, but symbols unresolved.

http://rpms.mandrakeclub.com/search.php?query=kernel-2.4.22.21mdk lists

You could try and install python2.2 on your system next to 2.3 probably and
have the scripts point to /usr/bin/python2.2 but I have serious doubts
whether the right modules would be loaded. I think their list is indeed the
best place to ask.

just a thing... the linux secure option from the boot
loader means some thing like on windows fail proof
mode... where you have running only the escential
services and is used to fix some thing that doesnt
work... like video settings or services that hang the
system.

the secure option doesn't mean about information
security.

Shows how much I use mozilla.., I am an opera and claws man

I meant messenger instead of composer and it relates to the usage of
mozilla-enigmai.

I am basing my action upon a discussion on the cooker list as it related
to the cooker rpms and it is my understanding that bug reports have been
made.

Having never before used it I did configure mozilla-messenger on my 9.2
system.
I had no problem retrieving mail but if I attempted to send or the do
anything with enigmai messenger crashed.

It is possible that this was caused by user error on my part, but I
still thought it prudent to at least remove them from my sites hdlist.

Just one word of advice here. Before you change any settings in the
samba configuration files, backup the original one, that is cp
/etc/samba/smb.conf /etc/samba/smb.conf.orig. There's a lot of
useful information in there, and you may want to read it through for
options later when you have a basic running system but want it
improved. If you use any tool at all to set the configuration it
will overwrite the file, so the backup is really useful.

Basically, once you have done that, have a go at setting it up.
You'll find some help on the TWiki too. Webmin is a tool that many
use for configuration - that's on the disks as well. If you get
stuck, copy your /etc/smb.conf to the list and we'll try to advise
you.

What I did was download the j2re from Sun, open a super user terminal in the
directory I downloaded it and then used the following commands:

sh j2re-1_4_2_01-linux-i586-rpm.bin

urpmi j2re-1_4_2_01-linux-i586.rpm

ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_01//plugin/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so

The last one is all one line with a single space after the .so.

Everything works as expected.

Sorry Ernesto,
I would be walking in the dark without a stick to try to help you with a
Mac system. I have never seen one, and wouldn't even know if it has an MBR.
Good luck with it though. I do know that there are people who have installed
Linux on a IMac, and others who have said that there is no point, because
that Mac system is good enough on its own, even Linux like? Sorry, I have
already told you more than I know.

displaying mozilla in a window without actually doing anything . Just
as soon as you do something , like moving a cursor over the mozilla
window or scrolling the window it jumps back to somewhere about
first or
second in the list usually vying with X (presumeably X Windows) for
top
slot . I guess mozilla is there somewhere but at a so low usage
level as
to be way off the list.
Mozilla is fairly memory hungry when loading, but OK thereafter, or so
it seems.

When did you start having a Reply to: in your mail client Aron?

Are you asking about the installer or the ISO?

The ISO is linked from:

http://www.pclinuxonline.com/pclos/pclinuxos.html

The installer, as previously stated, requires that you boot the release and
log in as root. The response to this question from Tex on the PCLOS forum at
pclinuxonline:

"A basic hard drive installer has been included in Preview 4. You can find it
under Configuration -> Hardware in the menu under root login."

Have fun!

That's what I thought so I changed the shorewall rules to allow all pings
last night. After being only connected to the internet for one hour, there
were MANY more hits than usual.

Just added that rule, stopped, cleared and started shorewall. Will see what
my logs look like in an hour or two. I never thought to add the rule
(duh!) because shorewall was already blocking it with the default net2all
policy.

Looks great! Far more options than my fwlogwatch web report. And shorter
"System Check" email messages ;)

Eagerly awaiting your instructions. I'm definitely keen to try it.

Thanks Derek for your advice. I have a hunch that the shorewall rule above
will do the trick.

Thanks Raffaele. Just checked the fwlog this morning after changing
shorewall to allow pings last night and only being connected to the
internet for one hour - and holy shite! MANY more hits than usual on ports
80 and 17300. Strange that so many hits on port 17300 all from different
source IPs when I don't even know what that port is used for??? Its not
listed in /etc/services and I haven't made any rules for that port myself.

I disabled supermount almost as soon as I had 9.2 installed. I've never been a

Well, I don't much care for supermount so thats not a problem. I can access my
Zip easily from the desktop icon, clicking on it, auto - mounts it, blows up
a window with contents, then I can umount it, eject it, whatever. I prefer it
this way. :-)

[newbie] Installing .bin files

Hi,

I want to install the latest Java runtime Environment (JDK) from Sun,
which is a selfextracting rpm.bin(?) file. How do I install it? With the
rpm manager? Any advise is most appreciated.

I also have a .bin file to install the Morphon CSS Editor and it's just
not obvious to me what to do with it. The install instructions say
nothing about installing the .bin file, that is supposed to be an
installer including the JRE.

I'm going to try to install the JRE from Sun and then install the tar.gz
from Morphon

[newbie] mozill-1.5**Warning**

2003-12-03 Thread Charles A Edwards

There are problems with mozilla-1.5.
The browser, what little I tested it appeared to perform adequately but others have
experienced performance problems most notably in mozilla-composer.

As a result the hdlist for my site has been changed so as not to include any of the
1.5 rpms.
For any who would still like to try it all the 1.5 rpms will remain available from my
site but they must now be manually dled and installed.

[newbie] Blocking linked webpages

Greetings.

Please excuse this post, as I was not able to find
anything in the faq which mentions script that would
either block outside links from one's own server.

Take such as a link from an offencive or pornographic
website that linked one's web server to its front

Is there a way to block such a link from say
www.pornpictures.com (a bogus address just for
example)
so that all who clicked on this link from the
offencive site would either get an error or be
re-directed?

Thank you for your time.

Re: [newbie] Linux behind proxy

I've never had much luck with MDK's internet connection wizards, I find
it easier to configure by hand. There are various places where to
configure the proxy.

For Mozilla, you go to the Edit->Preferences->Advanced->proxy and
specify there the name and port of the proxy. I guess there's something
similar for Galeon/Konqueror etc.

For command line programs like wget/lftp you set up some shell
environment variables, like

ftp_proxy=http://:@proxy.name:

(my proxy allows only ftp over http, that's why I have http there). You
can put these entries in your .bashrc configuration file. I can be more
precise if you need.

Re: [newbie] windows networking

2003-12-03 Thread Raffaele Belardi
To set up a file server for windows machines you need to install the
samba server package - it's on your MDK installation disks, use Software
Package Management from Mandrake Control Center. To configure samba
server you should read the Samba-HOWTO, just to know what you're doing.

To check if the NIC is configured correctly, open a terminal window and
type:
/sbin/ifconfig

This will print out the current configuration of the NIC, something like
this:

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:11:22:33:44:55
  inet addr:xx.xx.xx.xx Bcast:xx.xx.xx.xx Mask:xx.xx.xx.xx
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
Notice "UP" and "RUNNING", they tell you the NIC is properly configured.
Then look at the "inet addr", it will tell you if the DHCP server
provided you with a valid IP address. If you don't see UP and RUNNING,
or the IP addresses are invalid, then you might have a problem with DHCP
server.

someone who will make a determined attempt to break in.
On the other hand there are gazillions of computers on the net that do respond
to ping, so why should yours be any more likely to be attacked.

As regards being annoyed by the log entries you could try putting an entry in
/etc/shorewall/rules like :-

DROP net fw icmp8

That should drop pings silently, and will override the default action in
shorewall/policy which is to drop and log.

I have not tested the above because I have just started using ulogd to put all
my firewall hits into an SQL database (instead of syslog) which can then be
interrogated by a neat application called Webfwlog.
If you want to see what it looks like go here
http://www.jennings.homelinux.net/webfwlog-0.81/webfwlog/webfwlog.php

Before anyone asks how to do it. I am preparing a write up. Its a bit
complicated.

If you use Mozilla, go to Edit->Preferences, and within the popup window of
Preferences, click Advanced, then you will find option "proxies" among
advanced options. Click it.

Other web browser should be more or less the same.

[newbie] Linux behind proxy

2003-12-03 Thread cdrack
Hi people, i have installed Mandrake 9.2 and i need to
use the internet access over the network. A server on
the net is administrating the internet over a proxy
server, and i wath to connect with it, but i can't
find where to especify the port of connection.

At the internet options there are an option to specifi
the addresses for the http and ftp but there are no
option to specify the port to use with it.

 Have some one any idea...???

Re: [newbie] windows networking

2003-12-03 Thread cdrack
Hi, on my prior Mandrake sistems (9.1,9.0,8)
if you whant to use the DHCP option, you must have a
HDCP server that provides you the control of the
addresses over youre net.

So if you don't have it, the easyest thing you can do
is use the static ip address assigned by youre selfe.

For using the linux PC as a server it must have the 2
network cards on it and one must be connected to the
adsl device and the other to youre network hub or
switch. then use the DrackGW option of the mandrake
control center on Networks and Internet. This is and
wizz that will guide you to the sucssesfull internet
sharring.

(my english isn't good at all but i'll do my best to
help you.)

John.

you already wrote this earlier and go me a bit surprised. As long as
process is running, it should be listed (and it is, on my box) in top,
no matter if it's idling or consuming all the CPU. In other words, my
mozilla never gets out of top listing oh, now I get it, you're
probably running top with -i flag (don't show idle processes), right?

Re: [newbie] Shorewall - OK to accept ICMP type 8 from all?

2003-12-03 Thread Raffaele Belardi
Better not if your machine has a public static IP address. ICMP type 8
(ping) can be used to discover the IP address through ping 'storms', and
then use it for attacks to higher level protocols. Also there is the
ping of death attack that can crash your machine - although maybe newer
TCP/IP implementations are immune.

I'm sure there is a way to request IPtables not to log the
rejected/dropped ping packets, but I wouldn't be able to tell you OTOH.
Maybe somebody else already knows.

You're right Ron, no harm is done and I agree, it IS really annoying
scrolling thru logs/email with hundreds of lines unnecessarily. You can
either safely ignore these messages or, if you don't mind losing
supermount, avoid the error messages by adding "noauto" to the zip drive
entry in /etc/fstab.

I chose to add "noatuo" for my cdrom drive a few days ago but I think you
may soon become annoyed if you like supermount and use your zip drive
often. So far I've only used my cdrom drive once since the change so it
has bothered me too much yet and its soo nice getting shorter log
files.
