You can turn off msec. Go to /usr/sbin and rename the "msec" executable to
"DISABLEmsec". If you ever want to re-enable msec just rename the executable
back to the original "msec". This is fine if you know how to secure your
system and know what permissions you want on your directories.

I'm no fan of msec.

Derek,

Thank you very much for the link. I didn't know this and it helped me to
run alsaconf. It created a new version of the modules.conf but that was
fine because I had backed up the file because you warned me. Since then
I do not get a warning anymore when starting kmix from a terminal, but I
also still do not have any sound.

Is there anything else that I can do?

TIA,

Erik

I e-filed, have for about the last 3 years. My older brother used to work as
an auditor for the IRS and he told me once that e-filed returns usually get
less scrutiny than printed or written returns. The assumption is that math
errors and the like are less likely since they are culled out by the
software. However, I expect that the IRS trusts electronic stuff more
because the computer applications are simply not programmed to do as many
funky things as you can do manually, it makes the creative accounting stuff
less likely.

Not that I am necessarily worried about audits, my filings are fairly
conservative anyway, but I don't mind a little expense to avoid the hassle
factor.

I was funnin' with ya. (-; As long as it works it matters not which method you
chose, but for the timid lurkers out there a confirmation that either worked
for a professed "less than proficient linux user" may increase their
confidence levels.

Don't apologize please! The point was that whether I posted that in response
to you or not those aforementioned timid lurkers are reminded that there are
ways to check server status. OK?

Frankly I'd recommend you remove both. The source for what you want was called
updates by Mandrake Update once upon a time, now it's called update_source,
next week who the hell knows. Just nuke both and let Mandrake Update set
a new one up. Then you won't care what it's called either. (-:

Just be sure the one you pick from the list is one that is shown and is
recently synchronized from the list on the page mandrake secure that I
posted.

Good, it's handy. It will occasionally answer the "what's wrong with the
updates mirrors" question before it needs to be asked.

Take your time. I'm aware of the good feelings one experiences knowing MS
is gone from ones life, but if you never boot to the other operating system
the only real difference is the free disk space. I didn't nuke Windows
completely until I gave away the original 13 GB hard drive this machine had
to open a slot for another larger drive. I hadn't booted Windows for at least
18 months at that point though.

sound card (on-board, PCI card???) chip-set? Do you have aumix installed, if
not I recommend you do so and post the output of

Hi again Charlie.

You said:

Actually I opted for the right click on the K button. My reasons were
basically two. 1- Working from the command line I would have had no idea
how to undo what I did if it turned out to be wrong. 2- I'm working on
promoting Linux on the desktop and for virtually everyone not proficient
in Linux, very much including me, that means working from a GUI.

I'm sorry if I seem not to be paying attention but I guess I'm a little
confused about "updates" and "update_sources". Do I need both of these
enabled? And is the same URL usable for both? From what you said in your
response to me last spate of questions I'm taking it that Yes, both
updates and update_sources should be enabled. I'm not quite as clear on
whether or not the same URL is usable for both?

I now have the Mandrake Secure Updates site bookmarked for future
reference.

Until I managed to successfully install Mandrake 8.2, I had been a
Windows user since before W 3.1. My first installation of Windows was
actually a FREE run time version which came bundled with a word
processor.

I've been dual booting since the install of Mandrake 8.2 but virtually
never use windows at all any more. I had intended to delete windows
completely from my computer once I got Mandrake 9.2 installed and
running dependably. That is still my intent. These update problems have
simply caused a slight delay.

I really appreciate all the help in getting me to that point. With any
fortuity, my PC will be completely Micro$oft free by the turn of the
year. I'm sure I'll need a good of help in accomplishing that as well,
but first things first.

Oh yes, I still have no sound at all. Any ideas as to what the cause
might be? That is somewhat less of an issue to me because, generally,
the less noise-beeps, dings, chimes, etc. my computer makes the better I
like it. However I would like to have it running properly.

I can remember something similar.
I got fair results converting them to ps using pdf2ps as a command. Type pdf
and hit for all the available options.if you hadn't noticed:
is your biggest friend on the command line:)

I used the command quite often to collate pdf files. cat file.pdf file2.pdf >
newfile.pdf doesn't work on my boxso first convert to .ps with "pdf2ps" ,
than collate using "cat" and ">", then change back to pdf with "ps2pdfpress".

It's not pretty but works a charm and is fairly fast too (you can't beat it
with mouse-clicking).
Welcome to the abysses of the command line, heheh;)

Good luck,

Hi all,

Do any of you know of a good fitness/diet software
program that's run in Linux, preferably Mandrake? I'm
surprised that to this point I have been unable to
find such a simple program. Something like fitday.com
were you can track what you eat, and produce chart
graphs of weight, food, etc...
I don't know of any dedicated software, probably because Linux software
tends to be written by people for whom "diet" is merely the first word
in the sentence "Diet Coke is for wusses."

However, something like that should be fairly easy to set up in OpenOffice.

Sir Robin

You don't have to compile anything. Go to www.opensound.com and
download the latest opensound package; it supports a wide range of
soundcards including the Audigy. Plus you get a load of features that
are really useful to have, as well as getting a working soundcard.
Latest version of the drivers is below, I just downloaded the latest
package for kicks:
ftp://www.se.opensound.com/pub/oss/linux/oss398b-linux-v2x.tar.gz

Size: 3.9 MB (3,986,607 bytes)
Transferred: 3.9 MB (3,986,607 bytes)
I use the opensound drivers not only for compatibility/consistency
across whatever distribution version I happen to be running, (and more
importantly whatever hardware) but also for testing, as there is a
simple performance test facility in the package that allows you to check
the functionality of any of the supported soundcards under Linux. The
package above includes all of the wide range of soundcard drivers that
are supported by opensound.com This allowed me to weed out a bunch of
defective cards from some good cards one time. The cost for a full
license is something like 25 bucks; and you get (author level) support
for a very long time. By buying a license you support future soundcard
support. Vanilla kernel soundcard support tends to be very problematic
and I just haven't been able to rely on it as much of my hobby work
involves archiving network broadcasts. It just hasn't worked for me.
Opensound.com has the highest quality soundcard drivers available today
for the Linux world, I highly recommend them. They are well worth the
cost.

Thanks (and thanks to Charlie) - I reckon I'll go for the Audigy 2,
then. I was originally going to get a Turtle Beach card, but they seem
impossible to get hold of in Turkey. The Audigy 2 is the only
musician-friendly soundcard they have here - MIDI, jack and firewire
sockets.

Busy is good. So are questions that I might be able to answer, since then I
don't have to listen to the neighbours while I'm typing a reply.

OK, *which* freakin' directions? (g> The command line, right click the K
button or??? The four choices _may_ have included midnight commander, have
you installed it? I don't know if there's a menu item for it even if you did,
I always call it from the command line when I need it. Just type mc in a
terminal and strike the enter key. If you are looking for "Konsole (Super
User Mode)" it isn't there any more. That's why I told you to hold the Alt
button and strike F2 and type
konsole --type su
and strike the enter key. You can add the SU Konsole back to the menu I
suppose (maybe, never tried it) by adding the relevant icon, name and
command, or just drag the Konsole out of the menu, click copy here and right
click the resulting icon click properties and change the execute command to
that posted above. On the desktop not the menu but at least you'd have it.

You're also missing File Manager Super User mode from the menu. Everyone
running 9.2 is. You can add an entry in the menu (maybe, as above) or again
add an icon to the desktop. Right click, New>link to application, right click
the new icon and the execute tab should have the command:

kdesu -nc konqueror

then you can change the icon to whatever you like. Click the icon on the
general tab and select "Other icons" for some interesting ones. I'm using a
small blue file cabinet icon listed as "archive section" when I add this to a
"victim's" desktop.

It's one of the faster choices. It doesn't really seem to matter where the
mirror is in relation to your geographical fix. Available bandwidth in the
connections between you and the server is more important. The closest
relatively fast connection to you geographically would probably be the
mirros.secsup.org connection but again it may be farther away in terms of
bandwidth.

I'll say it again Langsley, have a look at

http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/ftp.php

ftp.stealth.net doesn't even seem to be on the list. In fact I can't connect
to ftp.stealth.net at all at the moment. I think I've given you a couple of
alternative URLs for updates, the reason that one is disabled may be that
there's no connection so the source is invalid. May be temporary or it may be
permanent. Who knows. Change to one of the others suggested in posts, or just
remove that one in the software source manager and OK your way out of that,
then let Mandrake Update suggest one that is working.

I just looked, the secsup mirror is still fairly fast from here, so is the
rediris one.

ftp://mirrors.secsup.org/pub/linux/mandrake/Mandrake/updates/9.2/RPMS

ftp://ftp.rediris.es/mirror/mandrake/updates/9.2/RPMS

Does any body knows why my devices, which at 9.1 was named hda, hdb,
etc. now are named ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1 and so on? It's
drivin' me nuts!

My ATAPI CD recorder didn't worked, then I discovered it had to be SCSI
emulated, and K3B suggested me to do the same whit the CD/DVD player (so
it can copy better) and now... Anything works! I can't neither watch a DVD.

I've came to the point where I'm not really sure what's the CD/DVD
player and what's the CD recorder.

Any help?

Well it's actually quite simple: If you use cups for printing you can set it
to "print to pdf" and it will automatically create multipage documents if it
doesn't fit on one page (exporting it through OofficeOrg does create a single
long one-page document, though).

In cups you also have the option to "save to file" which does the same and
creates a multi-page .ps file.
Ps files (coming from the same source) can be appended to each other thus:
"cat file1.ps file2.ps > file1+2.ps" (without the quotes) creates a file
(file1+2.ps) that has both in it.
To append a 3d thus:
cat file3.ps >> file1+2.ps where file1+2.ps now also has 3 added to the end
(appended). A single > would've overwritten the original content.

To create a printable pdf from it: "ps2pdfpress file1+2.ps file-press.pdf"
Type ps2 and then hit to see all available options.

Good luck,
HarM

You have no default gateway defined. Use the route command to add it.

route add default gw 192.168.0.1 dev eth1

(check the real ip address of the gateway)

Re: [newbie] Installing with a (new) second Hard drive

2003-12-12 Thread cdrack
The only thing you have to be aware is were to install
LILO, because if you install on the second master
disk, and if youre computer " BIOS Setup " indicates
that the boot must be done with the first master disk,
then you will never see the LILO boot manager.. and
you will be directed to youre Windows OS.

So if you plan to install it on the first or second
master disk, you must tell youre computer from wich
HHD it must load the boot.

I don't get it, if you have a line into the linux comp and a line out then you
have to have two nic cards eth0 and eth1 in order to connect two cables to
that computer. If that is the case then you have one nic that is not
functioning. So if one is a built in to the motherboard it would seem that
it may need to be activated in the bios. If it is active it should show up
when you do "ifconfig" in console. Also you should see the active light on
the back of the comp in two places. Something is missing or am I just daft?

yes, there are two cards, but the one built in to the motherboard eth0
is not activated, so we can just forget about that one. I`m olnly using
eth1, , just one cable goes into my comp into eth1, I can ping anyone

I'm sorry if this was already covered in the thread,
but I was not completely following along. Where are
you getting your mulit-page PDFs? I would love to
find out how/if this is possible. Currently I have a
document I'm scanning in via Kooka but am only able to
send each individual page to a PDF file. Hence, a 5
page docuement produces 5 individual files instead of
a single PDF file =/

Any suggestions or should I look on expert? I would
think this would be a very common task that I am
trying to accomplish here...

Thanks,

I'll create a new partition for swap use. Can I then run diskdrake to

Re: [newbie] Forgot the swap partition...

2003-12-12 Thread cdrack
as you should now, the swap partition acts like an
extra ram storage... When you run applications, they
alocates them code into the ram memori, but if you
have varius applications running at the same time.
(usualy... like network handler, video
handler, database servers, and so) Each one of them
will claim some memory space to work on. and if you
don't have enough to bring them, the system will slow
down and maybe hang.

Because not all the programs work at the same time,
there are memory alocated that is not nesesary to keep
with the actual information and may be used by active
applications, so here becomes important the swap
space. At this point the SO takes the memory from the
inactive applications and places it's information on
the swap partition, feeing memory to use by active
applications. When the unactive applications become
active then the SO find's the new inactive aplications
and does the hole thing again.

The SO can use a non swap partition for this job, but
the performance will not be the same, because the swap
partition have's a diferent file sistem and method to
access to the information.

So if you are able to reinstall or install a extra
disk to use it for swap job... go on.

Cdrack.

The package directly from sun but I think you already have that.

Try to do a "locate /usr/lib/mo*/plugins" and see what comes up. My guess
would be that there is some other plugins directory somewhere on the
machine
that is missing the requisite link. Creating the link worked immediately
on
my Mozilla 1.4 installation. But I did have to find the right directory.
On
my current machine I have a /usr/lib/mozilla, /usr/lib/mozilla-1.3.1,
/usr/lib/mozilla-1.3 and /usr/lib/mozilla-1.4 and all have plugins
directories. The correct one was /usr/lib/mozilla-1.4/plugins.

Or you could try installing Kaffe which, if my memory serves me correctly,
is
a free java virtual machine available as a Mandrake RPM.

After some experimenting I found out,

While OTOH,

spacing problems.
Mozilla is called by lp -s -dZ53f, while kword uses kprinter.

If the same kword file prints ok to anouther printer but not mine
why is
it that Mozilla has no trouble sending an identicle script to my

Sure,

Just set you jumpers on the HD as slave, plug it into the same IDE line
as the first HD , reboot, go into bios and autodetect the second ide
device , save and exit.

Slap you CD1 installation disc in the dvd and away you should go.
Eventually you will get to the partition tool , create you partitions on

boot script, and configure you video card make boot floppy and your
ready to go.

Go into MCC (K -> configuration -> configure your computer) and choose "boot"
and then "drakboot".
Then click "configure" and OK it. Chose the option (linux) you want and
"modify"...you'll be able teo set it as default there.
Back out of there OK'ing everything so as it all gets saved and configured.
(tip: try not to close windows but OK them in MCC).

Did you see this ?
http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/errata.php3#alsaconf

alsaconf is very effective at setting up your sound card. It will write the
driver configuration into /etc/modules.conf but be aware it will overwrite
the existing contents, and will not replace the non sound lines of the file.
So make a backup before running alsaconf and replace the non sound lines by
hand afterwards.

I am the wrong person to ask. I don't run 9.2 because of issues with my
HPT372 controller and only need to run soundwrapper to prevent conflicts with
Realplayer alone, all the other multimedia apps that I run have built in arts
support.

If I had to make a guess, I would say that this is because some developers
don't anticipate arts running constantly and controlling the sound device,
thus they try to access it directly and that causes conflicts. As to why
that experience would be different with previous versions of Mandrake, I am
not sure, I can only talk about what I have installed and run on my machine.
