[newbie] C/C++ IDE Mandrake 9.2

2003-12-17 Thread Guy Rouillier
On the Mandrake 9.2 download installation, does anyone remember the name
of the package containing a C/C++ IDE (other than KDevelop)? I saw it a
couple days ago when I was installing some other packages and thought to
myself "Hey, that looks interesting, I'll have to come back and check it
out." Of course, now I can't remember the name, and I've tried search
by name and by description to no avail. Thanks.

[newbie] smbclient problem on 9.2 solved- It was the NIC

2003-12-17 Thread Pat Patterson
I have been trying to get samba fully functional for a couple of months now
and it has been driving me crazy. My internet connection worked. The Samba
server worked but for some unknown reason that I researched thoroughly,
only some of the machines on my network could be reached from the linux box.

Finally just for the heck of it I disabled the onboard nic (ASUS
a7v600-3COM 3C940 )and put in another.
I was so proud of the on board nic because it was my first attempt at
installing something that was not in RPM form. Oh well. Anyhow, this is a
great board for linux but the Asus supplied 3com2000 driver is either
partially bad or I did not install it right.

Thought I would just add this to the record for future reference for others.

To get a text based boot script ,

Edit /etc/sysconfig/bootsplash
set SPLASH=no
Edit /etc/lilo.conf
add to append= splash=quiet

Now I know how to do it the right way instead of uninstalling the
package. Thanks :-)
but I'm not sure if by removing the bootslash packages
one cound also achieve the same result without having
to edit the above ?
since I didn't have to before I reinstalled the kernel.
Well I should say I'm running mdk 9.1. I had the blue splash like
monitor
on boot up and shutdown.
When I did a "rpm -e --nodeps bootsplash"
and rebooted no more blue splash.

Well, I wonder why the difference.
See, in using mkinitrd command, I think one is really remaking the
boot image file from /boot/vmlinuz, and it is the initrd image file
that is used at boot time to tell system what to do and what to load.

So , when I replaced my deleted vmlinuz file from CD1, it did so, and
I bet overwrote the initrd image file as well, and at the same time
gave me the blue gui boot script.

Now, by removing bootsplash packages, I'm guessing it removes it from
vmlinuz but not the initrd image file , so you still get the blue gui
boot script.

But , if this logic is correct , running mkinitrd command after
removing the bootsplash packages, ought to remake the initrd image
file without the blue gui .

I still have a /usr/share/bootsplash directory
but its empty except for a /themes directory which is also empty.
Also I have no /etc/sysconfig/bootsplash file
my /etc/lilo.conf file has no entry it like append= splash=quiet.
I would guess that when it looks for a splash or a theme it does not
find
one, so it doesn't use one and continues on with the process.

On another note John, did you get the text resolution you wanted on
boot up?

Sure, never went below vga=791 ever, not interested in any lower
screen resolution on standard boot up. It's a different matter on
failsafe and nonFB bootups, as you may have a screen resolution , or
video driver setting issue to overcome in order to get to desktop, and
as such I always choose vga=ask for these type of boot script.

Are you having problems then ?

No, I'm good, think I got lost a couple times along the way but I
arrived at
the correct destination :-)

Re: [newbie] MS Project equivalent in Linux?

2003-12-17 Thread Paul Kaplan
I looked hard about 6 months ago to find something, including installing MSP
and some other commercial programs on Codeweavers Crossover Office. No luck.
Codeweavers also isn't planning on working towards MSP compatability unless
someone is willing to support them. There's apparently some heavy duty
proprietary formatting in those MPP files.
Bummer. It's the only app I haven't found a good Linux replacement for.
Let me know if you uncover any solutions.

Robin, next time it happens, as root, issue a:

lsof -V /dev/tty0

and see whats holding on to it. You should be able to do a "killall -9
, then restart wvdial.

HTHs!
Thanks - as it turned out, this time wvdial was the culprit so as yankl
told me (offlist, presumably to save me embarrassment) all I had to do
was killall wvdial.

What does HTH mean?

This might work for you: It is what i used before Todd sent me his

if test "$(top -b -n 1 | grep -c MozillaFirebird)" = "0" ; then

Thanks for the advice Lanman and Derek =)

I'm not 100% sure it is the mobo as I still have to
check the outlet, cable, and switch. But I need to be
ready if it is!

I've always heard good things about Asus. Time to
shell out the $70+ and pick one up... I agree that I
would like a flexible BIOS for a couple reasons: a) in
case I get in a tweaky mood b) special options like
internal temperature are extremely valuable. My
old/current chip set is SiS. MDK 9.0 ran on it
horribly, but 9.1 ran like a dream. As for the
current CPU it's an AMD Athlon XP 1600. I'd like to
stick with AMD if possible... Silly question, but
Pentium or Intel chip sets still support AMD
processors right?? Sure hope so... Thanks for
pointing out the closed source issue w/Nvidia, Derek.
Yes, I have and love my GeForce FX 5600 video card,
but that is a must have!

That is what I am saying. The gui image is actually stored in the initrd

setting splash=NO), should eliminate it

Yes Greg,
Your approach has been correct all along, thank you for staying with me.
In truth, I got confused, first the rather confusing package name,
bootsplash.
I thought this was to do with the initial splash screen one gets on
first appearance.
it might of been better named something like bootscript, or
guibootscript, or something.

Then as we sorted that confusion out , the need to remake the
initrd.image file after the removal of boot splash became more obvious.
Do you think if I did this it would automatically remove the references
to splash=quiet splash=verbose, and in
/etc/sysconfig/bootsplash the set SPLASH=no .or maybe it doesn't
matter anyway ?

Thanks.

I just tried it and notice the same thing. There's some discussion of
this at mozillazine's tb forum. I got fb to launch if there was no
existing instance of fb, but the second time either brought up the
profile manager or the "Failed to send command" error. There's an open
bug for the whole profile manager thing in general.

Derek;

I agree with you about the video cards, and installing the
drivers for either the chipsets or video cards is certainly
a requirement for proper operation. No Question there! It's
just that I belong to a lot of groups which are
hardware-related and the general concensus is to avoid
nForce chipsets. Granted, most of the problems are
Microsoft related, but since a lot of members are
dual-booting their systems it becomes a relevant point.

The N-Force boards work well enough AFAIK, but you need to install a driver
for the motherboard (http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_nforce_1.0-0261.html
) That driver is closed source, and
while it is likely Nvidia will continue to supply it, there is no guarantee
they will. (Like if Microsoft bought Nvidia)

Like many other people I own an Nvidia graphics card, and use the closed
source Nvidia drivers. But if I was making a new purchase decision I would
try to avoid a product with a closed source driver.

I am trying to conncet two linux boxes together
directly via their NIC cards but they are unable to
recognize each other. there is no connection and I
can't ping the other one. I have set everything
including IP address and subnet mask correctly and
they are on the same subnet. the interfaces are up and
running (I checked them thru ip route and ifconfig).
I can't think of a reason why they can't see each
other, maybe I gotta set something with ARP. I wan to
know if someone has done this here before or this is
only a hardware problem or incompatibility.
BTW. both of their nic card are 3com.

thank you

[newbie] Need mdk Motherboard recommendation...

2003-12-17 Thread Tango Echo
Well, I think my motherboard decided to just randomly
die the other night. Worked fine the night before,
but in the morning didn't respond to the power switch.
I checked the power cables and swapped the power
supply for a known good one - still nothing. So that
would be mobo then, I guess...

What do you guys recommend for a motherboards that
would work great with Mandrake? I was running 9.1 but
am considering 9.2 (if you guys can recommend it now).
The ideal mobo would have an 8x AGP slot w/on board
temperature detection. On board video, sound and net
are not neccessary as I have these already. Hopefully
they still work! Cost is an issue too, unfortunately,
as the budge is somewhat limited. Heh, they probably
dont' make mobos w/lifetime warranties do they? Well
any and all advice from you all I greatly anticipate!

[newbie] MS Project equivalent in Linux?

2003-12-17 Thread Ed Smits
Title: MS Project equivalent in Linux?

Is there a Linux app that can read and write MS Project files? I looked at MrProject, it can't read an MPP file as far as I can see. I assume that it or another app can do an equivalent job of creating project plans, however I am forced to use Project and need true compatibility.

Any help or ideas appreciated.

Lee, while were on the subject, have you tried
phpgroupware? I am considering an office Linux mail
server that will provide groupware (contacts,
calender, etc). So it seems the major options right
now are kroupware, phpgroupware, and opengroupware.
If you or anyone else can make a recommendation I'd
greatly appreciate it! I should probably start
focusing on the Linux studies 1st, but it would be
nice to implement such a tool...

Hmm, sorry about that, I don't use Thunderbird myself and I just assumed
it would work. So much for the benefits of breaking Moz into components!

How about trying this:

/path/to/MozillaFirebird -remote "ping()"
echo $?

for each instance of

1. Firebird and Thunderbird not running (1)
2. Firebird only running (0)
3. Thunderbird only running (0)
4. Firebird and Thunderbird both running (0)

My guesses of the results are in parentheses. If I'm right about #3
above, then maybe you could get around it by opening new-window instead
of new-tab?

That is what I am saying. The gui image is actually stored in the initrd
image in 9.2, so recreating it after removing the bootsplash package (or
setting splash=NO), should eliminate it.

I had the blue splash like monitor
on boot up and shutdown.
When I did a "rpm -e --nodeps bootsplash"
and rebooted no more blue splash.
Well, I wonder why the difference.
See, in using mkinitrd command, I think one is really remaking the boot
image file from /boot/vmlinuz, and it is the initrd image file that is
used at boot time to tell system what to do and what to load.

So , when I replaced my deleted vmlinuz file from CD1, it did so, and I
bet overwrote the initrd image file as well, and at the same time gave
me the blue gui boot script.

Now, by removing bootsplash packages, I'm guessing it removes it from
vmlinuz but not the initrd image file , so you still get the blue gui
boot script.

But , if this logic is correct , running mkinitrd command after removing
the bootsplash packages, ought to remake the initrd image file without
the blue gui .

I still have a /usr/share/bootsplash directory
but its empty except for a /themes directory which is also empty.
Also I have no /etc/sysconfig/bootsplash file
my /etc/lilo.conf file has no entry it like append= splash=quiet.
I would guess that when it looks for a splash or a theme it does not find
one, so it doesn't use one and continues on with the process.
On another note John, did you get the text resolution you wanted on
boot up?
Sure, never went below vga=791 ever, not interested in any lower screen
resolution on standard boot up. It's a different matter on failsafe and
nonFB bootups, as you may have a screen resolution , or video driver
setting issue to overcome in order to get to desktop, and as such I
always choose vga=ask for these type of boot script.

Are you having problems then ?

I haven't done anything new to the setup or installed/upgraded anything

Something I thought was weird (and I'm sure it's just my understanding),
but when I did an 'ls -al' on my /home directory, I remembered that I
still have a couple of .iso images taking up some space (this is a 25GB
drive). So just out of curiosity I deleted them freeing up a couple of
gigs. But when I restarted the machine I got the same message about

Just looking for some next steps and ultimately finding out why this
happened.
Thanks.

If those iso images were on a different partition that could explain why
deleting them did not help.

There could be a few things using up your / partition.
You may have some core dumps. Look in /root, / , or /home for any file
beginning with 'core' They may be safely deleted.

It could also be your logs have reached a vast size. Look in /var/log for
huge log files. To stop your log files becoming huge install the anacron
package. It will make the 'logrotate' job run daily to compress and delete
old logs.
It's worth checking /tmp as well. Running tmpwatch (as root) will clean
up files in /tmp that are older than a time you specify e.g.

tmpwatch -vs 5 /tmp

will clean up any files older than five hours which aren't currently
open and print a list of deleted files.

Is this what you want? I have saved this from another post, so I cannot give
the author the credit, because I don't know who it was? But it wasn't me.

You have to set a vga=xxx string in lilo.conf.

Lets' asuume you have a lilo.conf like this:

boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
default="linux"

image=/boot/vmlinuz
label="linux"
root=/dev/hda1
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append="devfs=mount hdc=ide-scsi acpi=ht resume=/dev/hda5"
read-only
vga=7xx
^^^
   this is your vga mode

You have to set it to vga=791 in order to have a 1024x768 color console. You
can set this vga=791 string per kernel image, or for all kernel images - then
include this line at the top of lilo.conf:

boot=/dev/hda
vga=791
...

Then just say "lilo" as root and reboot to see your new beautiful console :-P

Read the "Framebuffer-HOWTO" if you want another (non-1024x768 or with
16/256/etc colors) vga mode.

Boot from the MDK installation disk (CD1) and, at the splash screen hit
F1, then at the prompt type rescue. This will boot the system from the
cdrom and present you with a menu. Select "mount partitions on /mnt",
then "go to console". From the console, cd to /mnt/etc and edit fstab to
remove the whole line containing /dev/hdb1. Save the file and reboot
(without the cdrom).

Success: The system allowed going to a command prompt when it stopped
during the boot process. So I was able to edit /etc/fstab, and then the
system
booted into KDE.

I initially tried interactive mode, but pressing "I" didn't do anything.

Would you also be able to do this by booting to rescue mode with the MDK
install disk or by booting to single-user mode? Just wondering here if
there may be an easier route since I may be encountering this same

Thanks for that Todd... been waiting for this feature!

Bit of a bummer that the script copied from the URL wants to use another
profile if firebird is already running tho. I changed it to konqueror so I
don't have to worry about whether or not firebird is already running.

Cheers

Sharrea,

That choose profile is annoying. I use this script which I called
/usr/bin/firebird to open links in a new tab. If you prefer, you can
substitute new-window. Everything I use that launches URL's calls this
script.
Todd, I'm having trouble with the script below. I put in some echoes
and ran the script from a terminal, and here is what I see:

(1) If neither Thunderbird nor Firebird is running, the script
successfully starts up Firebird and retrieves the target URL.

(2) If *Thunderbird* is running the script thinks that Firebird is
running. I guess because they both use the Mozilla rendering engine?

(3) If either Thunderbird or Firebird is already running, it goes into
the if case and prints out "Failed to send command." The target URL is
not retrieved.

Any ideas?

Todd

#/bin/bash
browserPath="/usr/local/MozillaFirebird/MozillaFirebird"
url="$@"
$browserPath -remote "ping()"

# $? = false if running, true if not
if [ $? = 0 ] ; then
exec $browserPath -remote openURL"($url,new-tab)"
else
$browserPath $url
fi
exit

I am going to assume that it is reading about /dev/hdb1 from fstab, and so you
have to remove it there.

I would try to boot and do it interactively, so then when fstab is read, you
can stop it from trying to get hdb.

The other option is to boot knoppix if you have a disk around or something
that will let you get in and edit fstab to get rid of the hdb mention.

My first shot at fixing this would be to nuke the ~/.kde/share/apps/konqueror
directory after I saved bookmarks.html someplace else. Then reboot X and all
will be restored from default.

that location is where Konq has all its config files, and you just might have
something scrambled there.
