Yes there is. Install the drakwizard package and mandrake Control Centre
will
have a new server section containing a DNS wizard.

OK, I downloaded kernel-source-2.4.22-21mdk.i586.rpm and got the following:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] rpms]# urpmi kernel-source-2.4.22-21mdk.i586.rpm

[EMAIL PROTECTED] rpms]#

what does that mean? I tried to uninstall the same file using the graphical
manager and it says that it isn't there. When I click on the rpm in a gui

:-(

what next?

Not tested.

for i in *.txt
do
zip `echo $i|sed s/\.txt/\.zip/` $i
done

Will work with files with spaces in the name if you quote $i's.

grep is for searching for occurences of a pattern in a file or output.

Looks like I'm one of the few that would, then!

It does seem to be a bit of a lottery, installing any distro of Linux.
Will your particular combination of hardware work with that distro? If
not, can you come up with a solution, usu by the mailing lists/forums?
This is OT I know, but I am trying to get Damn Small Linux going on a
PII 300 64Mb laptop, or indeed any other live distro, and it ain't
happening. Yet I read of others who found it worked on a 486 out of the
box!!
Looks like the particular hardware combination I have worked well with
9.2. I couldn't get RH9 going for love nor money, btw.

When I boot from CD, press F1, type rescue, there is no selection for
Maintenence. Not sure what "ncurses" is, but the selections include
mounting volumes, fixing bootloaders, etc. There is a "command prompt"
selection. I assume that's what I want. But the "passwd" program isn't
found. Command is not recognized.

BTW, I'm not the one with the original problem, just trying the
procedure. :)

Not sure but I think the same applies to mozilla-1.4:

I installed RealPlayer-8.0-6mdk.i586.rpm,
RealPlayer-Codecs-9.0-2mdk.i586.rpm and mozplugger-1.3.0-8mdk.i586.rpm but
couldn't get RealPlayer working in either mozilla-1.5 or firebird-0.7
(RealPlayer itself worked fine, just not from a browser). I had already
created a symlink to /usr/lib/RealPlayer8/rpnp.so in both plugin
directories, but alas... no go.

The problem is that these newer versions of mozilla and firebird are
compiled with gcc-3.2 but the RealPlayer plugin is compiled with gcc-2.95.
Thanks to Mitch at http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=213234 we
have a hack to get around this problem.

After locating an old libgcc.a from gcc-2.96 on my system, I created the
file (see attached rpnphack.so ) called rpnphack.so with the following
parameters:

ld -shared -o rpnphack.so \
/full/path/to/RealPlayer/rpnp.so \
/some/path/to/an/old/libgcc.a

I then copied the rpnphack.so to the browser plugin directories, started
firebird, tried RealNetworks' test samples at
http://service.real.com/realone/test/ and VOILA!!! it works! Realplayer
starts buffering the demo.

NOTE: Still can't get comedycentral.com to work though! Says I don't have
realplayer installed.

about:plugins shows:
audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin RealPlayer Plugin Metafile rpm Yes

and in /etc/mozpluggerrc I have the following lines:

audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin: rpm: RealPlayer Plugin Metafile
audio/x-pn-realaudio: ra,rm,ram: Realaudio-plugin resource locator
audio/x-realaudio: ra,rm,ram: RealAudio file

I've seen this crap before but I don't remember why it happens Paul. The
simple fix is to download the source directly from the mirror, move it to
/var/cache/urpmi/rpms then urpmi it. Or use the GUI (rpmdrake) to install it.
First check to be sure it hasn't downloaded and is sitting there already. If
it is compare the size to what's on the mirror. It should be 40.2 MB.

Holler if there are still problems.

Hello Anne and Tom,

Thank you both for your responses. I guess if I want this box to be current
in the form of os, then I will have to upgrade the cpu. Anne, I have no
documentation for this machine and was wondering if you can remember what
type of socket the cpu uses. I was at the emachine site and was not able to
find any documentation as in user guide for this etower 366c other than basic
specs.

No problem Go to mandrake control center also known as configure your
computer in ML 9.2 then to software manager / install software, you will find
KPPP in one of the kde networking packages. install it and you are good to

configure a dialup connection with a mandrake wizzard but I have never used
it so proceed at your own risk if you decide to try it.

Re: [newbie] Help needed configuring SSHD and PAM

2004-01-05 Thread George P. Stathis
My sshd_config file did not have any
DenyUsers/AllowUsers line but it did have this little
sucker:

PermitRootLogin no

:-) That did the trick. Thanks for drawing my
attention to this file.

Your observation about the dangers of allowing root to
log in is good. I'm just running Linux on a partition
on my home PC for graduate school work, this is not a
commercial system. There is nothing valuable on my
machine so there won't be any losses if there is a
break-in and the root password is not a common
dictionary word, so brute force might take a while. I
just need root access for convenience for now.

Thank you for your time!

[newbie] Where's KPPP?

2004-01-05 Thread Bill
Hello to the group,
I must start out by saying I am very new to linux,
However I do have some experience with Knoppix 3.2. I
have even installed Knoppix on the harddrive. I have
decided to try Mandrake v9.2 Download edition. I am
having trouble connecting to the internet. In Knoppix
I used KPPP, But in Mandrake I cannot even find KPPP
in the Kmenu. I cannot understand why it is not there?
Can anyone help I have no idea what to do next?

I tried webmin to admin Apache 2.0 and got the following error:

"The Apache server executable /usr/sbin/httpd does not exist. If you have
Apache installed, adjust the module configuration to use the correct
path."

I searched for httpd, but didn't find it...(that doesn't mean it isn't
there

Will Webmin work with Apache version 2? What configuration is needed?

Julie:
Thanks for the tip. It's been ordered. $3.99 for the CD and another $5.00 to
ship it sounds like a much better deal to me than spending over 24 hours
downloading all that stuff.

Back to the OP's question: 400MB of updates sounds kind of high to me --
that's roughly 20 per cent of the base 3 CD distribution.

Sigh -- I guess it's time to call the cable guy.

Re: [newbie] 9.2 good now?

2004-01-05 Thread bascule
hmm, not to be a party pooper but some folk still have problems that we didn't
have with 9.1
i get random xmms freezes where it just stops, i cant use the mouse to change
desktops but i can use ctrl-f1 etc. i alt-f2 and issue 'killall -9 xmms' and
i'm back in action, the freeze was almost instantaneous with all kernels that
i've tried but the current one i found a refernce to on the web -
2.4.22-18mdk, even then the freeze still happens, it just takes longer
also if i have my webcam plugged in on boot up then kmix doesn't load saying
that it can't find the mixer being specifed, i suapect that the mixer for the
usb audio on the webcam is to blame, if i plug the webcam in after booting
then it works and kmix still works
so not exactly a flawless install, esp. the xmms thing, the webcam did take
some sorting in 9.1 but for xmms to be dodgy is bloody annoying!
my hardware is:
aopen ak77-600gn + athlonxp 2500
soundblaster live value (onboard sound turned off though onboard gameport
enabled)
nvidia 5600xt
logitech 4000 pro webcam
running kde, using alsa-output with xmms
2.4.22-18mdk kernel
realtek 8139 nic

having googled and searched for 'xmms' in the archives i think i'm alone in my
particular category of woes but this was a clean install, not to mention that
the well publicised 'fix' for the menu problem by updating via rpmdrake
didn't work for me either, i had to play around with menudrake selecting
different options from the menu bar and saving and suddenly things got fixed,
however my trust in the system is such that i daren't edit the menus in case
it all goes south again!
oh yes, did i mention that my custom hotkeys for volume changing on this old
keyboard using ~/.kde/share/config/khotkeysrc no longer work either? i also
appear to be alone in the universe in this also :)
so, if your reason for upgrading is to fix a problem that you couldn't find an
answer to (like i did) then i suggest spending more time on the original
problem first, before upgrading, because in my case, i've swapped one problem
for three!

Cheapbytes has a CD of the Mandrake 9.2 updates that takes you through the
bulk of them ... I think it is a little over 400MB (or there abouts). Anyway
after updating with that and then doing a further update via the Internet can

You might want to check your sshd server settings. In the /etc/ssh directory
should be a sshd_config file that has your ssh server configuration settings.
On mine in particular are lines:
DenyUsers root ftp .
AllowUsers blah,blah

These specify that only particular users are allowed to login via ssh and
specific users are disallowed from logging in via ssh, including root. It is
a VERY bad idea to allow root to login via ssh since that account is well
known by all and sundry and someone can effectively use that account to try
to dictionary attack your machine to get access.

At least with a user login, the person must guess/know the username and then
try to brute force the password. Just another layer of protection and no
reason to allow root direct login, you can login as a user and su to root to
issue commands.

[newbie] Help needed configuring SSHD and PAM

2004-01-05 Thread George P. Stathis
Hello, I'm new to Linux and I'm running Mandrake 9.2.
I have just installed the sshd server that came with
the installation disks.

My sshd service is running fine but I'm unable to
login to localhost with the root password. I get:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] root]# ssh localhost
[EMAIL PROTECTED]'s password:
Permission denied, please try again.

I've looked for the answer all over and there seems to
be other people having similar problems with other
Linux distributions. Solutions vary with tweaking the
/etc/pam.d/sshd file, but I've tried them all and I
still can't get this to work. Out of the box, my
/etc/pam.d/sshd file looks like this:

#%PAM-1.0
auth required /lib/security/pam_stack.so
service=system-auth
auth required /lib/security/pam_nologin.so
accountrequired /lib/security/pam_stack.so
service=system-auth
password required /lib/security/pam_stack.so
service=system-auth
sessionrequired /lib/security/pam_stack.so
service=system-auth

I should also mention that I can't find any
/etc/pam.config file.

If anyone has encountered this or can point me to a
location that explains how to get sshd working with
PAM, I would appreciate it. The pam man page hasn't
been too enlightening.

Thank you in advance for your time.

I suspect, based on my own experience with a dodgy DSL router (until I figured
out what the problem was) that wget is pretty network aware. If you
disconnect and then redial the connection, you are getting a new IP address
and wget does not make the connection between the old file request and the
new IP address. So, it basically just sits there waiting for the old
connection to start back up. If you got the exact same IP address, wget
might resume the transfer. I say might because it is possible that the
server you are pulling from will time out the connection and then I don't
think that wget can restart it without making a brand new request.

> So I stopped it by using ctrl-c and started again...wget url
>
> and instead of resuming, it started again from the beginning.

If you Ctrl-c, you may be interrupting the shell command but wget itself is
probably happily running along in the background waiting for the transfer to
start backup. You should try to issue a killall wget to make sure that all
active connections are killed before you try to restart the transfer. I
usually run wget from a shell script with all my command options included by
default, so that may just be me.

Then, run wget with a -c (for continue) on the command line and it will resume
partial downloads instead of restarting them.

By default, it does not overwrite files but will resume if you tell it you
want it to. Note, if you have a lot of sudden stops and starts, it is
possible for things to get corrupted and for the resume to either not work or
actually corrupt the file, only happened to me once when I was doing a lot of
background maintenance including messing with the internet connection but it
did happen.

[newbie] wget / download managers

Hi all

Can anybody recommend a good download manager?

or can anybody tell me what i'm doing wrong with wget?

I've been using wget, but on dialup it doesnt seem to work to well.

It's fine as long as I stay connected, if there are any errors at the other
end or it loses itself, it resumes great.

So I stopped it by using ctrl-c and started again...wget url

Wow!!! that is a super fast connection. OTOH, an average upload
rate of 55KB/s tells me you're only givin about 1/3 of your
upstream capacity to torrent. No need to limit.

No need to wait till you quit torrent. I burned my iso's to
Cd's while the torrent was still runin. Later after a 2.2.24
kernel try. I also then tried an 'update' (to current cooker
anyhow) with the New Years' beta 1 iso's. Both failed to do much.
Restarted my 10.0. beta 1 torrent on rebooting. It's still goin.
I reckon I've uploaded both iso's twice in return so far.

The configuration could be done through Webmin, I would imagine. I am not sure

At any rate; in a terminal what's the output of running the command:

[newbie] Mandrake 9.2 packaging of gCvs

2004-01-05 Thread Guy Rouillier
I'm having difficulty with the Mandrake 9.2 version of gcvs. I
installed both it and the version of cvs that come on the distribution.
When I try to set preferences, gcvs complains something like
"alternate cvs does not support gui redirection". I remembered from the
last time I used this reading that gcvs needs a special version of cvs
that recognizes the --cvsgui option, so that it can capture the output
from cvs; the package description actually says this. I looked in the
detailed description for the Mandrake version of gcvs and saw no cvs
included there So I went onto the wincvs site and downloaded the
version of gcvs I found there (the i386 RPM package). Sure enough, it
contains its own cvs, which it installs in /usr/local/bin. After
installing this version, it works fine.

Am I doing something incorrectly, or is this a packaging issue I should
submit as a bug?

No.
Search the source code file libavcodec/mpegvideo.c for the line:

av_log(s->avctx, AV_LOG_ERROR, "get_buffer() failed (%d %d %d %p)\n", r,
pic->age, pic->type, pic->data[0]);

Make a note of it's line number.

(kwrite displays line numbers in the bottom left of the status bar.)

Give gdb the command:
break mpegvideo.c:285
Replacing 285 with whatever the line number was that you found.

Oh look at that.
Can you run it again, but before starting the application (run -v ...) set a
breakpoint on the line:
	av_log(s->avctx, AV_LOG_ERROR, "get_buffer() failed (%d %d %d %p)\n", r,

av_log to mpegvideo.call one line.

My source code says that's line 285, but yours may well be different. (I'm looking at 1.0pre3) The gdb command is "break mpegvideo.c:285" Remember to check and change the line number.

How ?

Start it like before with run -v ... and when it stops at the breakpoint get a

Hi there,
Seems like your machines are not on the same network if I got it right
your windows is on the 169.X.X.X network
And your Linux is on the 204.X.X.X network
If you don't have a ROUTER between them it won't work,
Make sure both of the machines are on the same network.
In addition your windows IP is assigned automatically to your machine
after failing to retrieve one from your DHCP server, if you don't have
one you better assign a static IP.

Subject: [newbie] unable to ping to/from my windoze box

Hi all,

well I've been trying to get these two boxes [my Mandrake 9.0 desktop
and my Thinkpad with WIN2KPRO] talking, and haven't been able to get
Samba to do much of anything.
I had an idea to try the basics, and surprise surprise, it's no wonder
Samba is having trouble - the two boxes aren't even recognizing each
other!

I ran ipconfig on the windoze box and it said:
autoconfiguration IP address: 169.254.5.217

so from a terminal window on the Mandrake box I typed:
ping 169.254.5.217

and got:
PING 169.254.5.217 (169.254.5.217) from 203.146.175.77 : 56(84) bytes of
data.

but then it just sat there and did nothing.

So then I pinged 203.146.175.77 from the windoze box and it returned 4
lines of "Destination host unreachable".

Needless to say, these two boxes talk to each other just fine over the
same bit of cable using the same internal LAN cards they both came with
when they're both running windoze...

What do I have to do in Linux to make the network work? [btw it connects
to the internet just fine via the modem]

TIA for any help [again]
:)

I couldn't get either 9.0 or 9.1 onto a Cyrix/IBM 266 box. I found a
used amd cpu to replace it, and everything was fine after that.

The "a _lot_ more downloading to do after installation" doesn't enter into
this for me since I have duplicates of the cooker and 9.2 trees on one of my
drives.

Somebody is certainly having success with the torrent. I started it after I
rsynced the cooker tree last Thursday morning to get the ISOs. The pull has
been steady at around 55 KBytes/sec. The only time it isn't running is during
brief periods when glitches at my ISP drop my connection; usually a few
seconds at a time and never more than a minute.

That upload rate is about a third of my maximum theoretical upload bandwidth.
I haven't restricted it at all. "Maximum Rates" on this service (cable) are,
theoretically; 10 mbit/sec down, 1.5 mbits/sec up.

I think I'll be clicking "Finish" in the next day or two so that I can
actually try the installer. It's hard to test when you're busy feeding the
hungry maw of the torrent. (-;

 I use the GUI.
bittorrent-gui-3.3-3mdk
bittorrent-3.3-3mdk

I download the torrent file to /home/tom/torrent/ Then just
clicking on the torrent file in Konqueror File Manager starts the
little GUI screen showing d/l rate and estimated time, and the
upload rate. BUT

Before starting the torrent, I edit
/usr/lib/python2.3/site-packages/BitTorrent/download.py
(your python version might be different, mines current cooker)

... and limit upload bandwidth by editing

defaults = [
('max_uploads', 2,
"the maximum number of uploads to allow at once."),

  ... and

   ('max_upload_rate', 4,
'maximum kB/s to upload at, 0 means no limit'),

The last one is the important one. I also have DSL, 1.5mbit
down, but only 128kbit up. That translates to a max of about
13KBytes up. Since the d/l stream also needs bits for acks and
no acks, leaving the upload unlimited, all but kills the d/l. In
my example above, I've limited upload to 4KB. In practice, this
keeps torrent from using more than 4.... KB. Which leaves
enough for the torrent d/l stream, plus using my connection for
other things, including background stuff like ntpd, DNS requests,
etc. (run 'ethereal' to see all the background stuff)

I got the iso's at an average of 155KB/s down in just a few
hours early 1/1/04 while reading my morning email. I've left it
uploading since. With the d/l complete, my connection is as
usable as even without the torrent uploading. FWIW, I use the
GUI 'cause I never could get my head around the CL options ;)

I think the OP might be confusing 128 kilobits, with KiloBytes
too. Generally you can divide by 10 (8 bits to a byte + a
couple more for acks and background proccesses). So a 128kb
upstream is really a 13KB/s up. My 1.5million bits down stream
does well to get 155KByte/s down. The download.py settings are
in bytes, not bits.

Hmm - I haven't used XP, or W2K in quite a long time, but IIRC netbui
can be dropped, and the lan configured to run on TCP/IP only.

I think it would save him a lot of pain, and cause no problems
whatsoever in Windows. It's even easy to set up on both boxes.

No, I'm not getting any emails from cron at all. I've never seen this
problem on any of my other linux boxes, nor of any of them that I
support at the University. Cron appears to be running. I even
installed anacron as a comparison, and anacron isn't finding any cron
scripts that are not being touched. It looks like cron is touching the
scripts, and is running, but isn't running anything.

Erm... When I said had you run the drakconnect wizard I meant had you gone
into Mandrake ControlCentre>Networking>Drakconnect and pressed the 'Wizard'
button. It will auto detect your network interfaces and walk you through
their configuration.
The wizard will write the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 that
Adolfo has asked you about.

Type 'mail' in a root terminal and you should see the emails cron has been
sending you every time it fails.
Put a full email address in the MAILTO= field and you will get the mails in
your regular mail account (So long as you have a mail server installed or an
smtp transport application like ssmtp)

Also if you install webmin from your CDs and type
https://localhost:1 in a browser you can view your cron jobs and run them
from within webmin. (Note: https NOT http )

And finally Please do not hijack threads by changing the title of an existing
post. It does not worry me, but some people get seriously pissed off by it.

The scripts can be executed by root and run fine with root. Do they
need to be permissible by anything else? I am not at home at the moment

Hi Merlin:

First of all, let's find out whether Mandrake is loading your NIC
driver. For this, enter the command:
lsmod | grep 8139too

Next, let's see what your NIC setup is. Enter the command:
cat /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0

Please, post in a message the outputs of these two commands, no matter
what they are.

Anne, Since in Windows the IP are 169.254.something I assume it is using
ZEROCONF to setup the lan connection.

Actually, he originally posted:
I ran ipconfig on the windoze box and it said:
autoconfiguration IP address: 169.254.5.217

This seems to indicate that he is NOT using DHCP or anything else, but Windows
is trying to do that zeroconf stuff and is auto assigning an IP address to
the network card. That means that he may have an IP but it is pretty
worthless for any type of interface unless he manually adds the address to
hosts on all machines and even then, we should assume that it may change at
each boot point. Windows gets around this by broadcasting (with NetBUI IIRC
or RPC) on the local net, something that he would need Samba configured to do
and a bad idea anyway since that broadcast could "leak" to the Internet and
make your machine visible to sundry and all.

If zeroconf was working on Mandrake and he had Samba installed and configured,
he would theoretically be able to see the windows machine and connect to it
using Samba. Static IP would allow all of the normal Linux connectivity to
work as well, like FTP, SSH, VNC, etc.

Your suggestion to switch to a static IP address is a VERY good one. He would
be well advised to follow it.

Via modem, you are right. However, you are not trying to hit the Window
machine via modem, you are trying to go direct Lan to it. Newer Windows has
something akin to zeroconf that tries to autoassign IP addresses to network
interfaces. This simulates DHCP in that your ethernet card will get an IP
address, although it is not really valid for routing since there is no DNS
setup that knows that address is active. Mandrake should be trying to do the
same thing with zeroconf, but it is not assigning an IP (based on what you
posted) so either it is failing, not installed, or not configured correctly.

Your internet stuff is going through dial-up, so it is completely separate
from your ethernet.

You should run the wizard DrakConnect again and make sure that you choose
static IP address and give your ethernet card an IP address yourself. You
can try to let the zeroconf stuff do it, but a static IP is a better idea
since you will at least always know what IP you should be using and can add
it to the host file of both machines to make sure that they know what the
other machine is. Actually, that is a good idea on Windows as well.

> How would I find out what Linux *thinks* it's using?

You already did. Linux is using nothing currently, that is why you can't get
to the other machine. When you try to ping the windows machine, Linux is
using your dial up connection and can't get to the machine because your ISP
does not have any DNS on that machine.

Right - well the first thing is to see what your windows boxes are
using. Check *all* the network config tabs and write down the
results. It's very likely that they are using dhcp - i.e. letting
the isp set your ip. That's fine on many counts, though there are
some advantages in using static I, my preferred option.

Once we know what the rest of your lan is doing we can advise you how
to make your Mandrake box join in

Insert the Mandrake CD or DVD and boot from that. At the prompt, hit F1 and
enter rescue on the boot command line. When the ncurses screen comes up,
choose Maintenance mode and that will put you in at single user console.
Issue the "passwd username" and it should prompt you to enter a new password
for that user account. You would be advised to change the warning period to
give your user accounts a longer period of time to change passwords before
they expire. I would recommend 14 days if you are going to run in paranoid
mode.

kpackage does not resolve dependencies for you.
If you install packages you have downloaded with gurpmi then all dependencies
will get resolved. (gurpmi is usually the default application which will
open if you click on an RPM package.)

However there is not much point downloading VNC because it is already on your
CDs in the form of tightVNC which is an improved variant of VNC which has the
additional benefits of data compression and ssh encryption.

Just install the tightvnc-server and tightvnc RPMs using your Software
Installer.

What have your experiences been with Mandrake 9.2? I
recently purchased a new hard drive and was debating
if I should put 9.1 (my current one) or 9.2. I know
lots of people had complained about 9.2 initially, but
perhaps most of the bugs have been worked out? Are
there any common bugs I should know about? I just
returned from a break so I'd be interested what all of

Darryl, the easiest way to do this is to pick up an already existent script in
the /etc/init.d directory and copy it, modify it for your needs and then use
either webmin or run sysconfig against the script to add it into the levels.

Pay special attention to the chkconfig line, it specifies the init levels for
the script, run order and nice level, respectively. Thus, this script runs
on init 2, 3,4,5 and it runs at order # 65 from 0-99 (thus later after
network and other daemons have started) and has a nice level of 35. The
functions line allows you access to special functions like killproc to kill
the process, rather than having to killall or track the pid.

A quick example:

#!/bin/sh
#
# ddclient This shell script takes care of starting and stopping
# ddclient.
#
# chkconfig: 2345 65 35
# description: ddclient provides support for updating dynamic DNS services.

[ -f /etc/ddclient.conf ] || exit 0

. /etc/rc.d/init.d/functions

# See how we were called.
case "$1" in
  start)
# Start daemons.
echo -n "Starting ddclient: "
touch /var/lock/subsys/ddclient
daemon ddclient -daemon 300
echo
;;
  stop)
# Stop daemons.
echo -n "Shutting down ddclient: "
killproc ddclient
echo
rm -f /var/lock/subsys/ddclient
;;
  restart)
$0 stop
$0 start
;;
  status)
status ddclient
;;
  *)
echo "Usage: ddclient {start|stop|restart|status}"
exit 1
esac

exit 0

Bashan, you might do better to tell us what you are trying to accomplish. If
you are worried about security on the file, Linux file permissions can keep
the file from being viewed by anyone other than you or root, depending on who
created it. Aside from that, pgp encryption would restrict even further,
preventing root from viewing the file. You could also zip the file and add a
password and that would also encrypt it, although I suspect that pgp
encryption would be more secure.

If you are trying to duplicate file system encryption vis a vis Windows, you
should understand that there is little need to do so although you can encrypt
file systems with Linux also. I just have never heard of anyone needing to
do so, other than NSA types, since the security model makes most of that
superfluous in Linux.

Well it tells me that you only have a dial up connection. Your Eth0 interface
is not there.
Have you tried going through the wizard in drakconnect?
Is the correct driver being loaded? Is there a line starting
"alias eth0" in the /etc/modules.conf file?
What make of ethernet interface is this?

[newbie] Creating new init scripts

2004-01-05 Thread Darryl Adams
I have a non standard Wireless Network Card which used to start
automatically in Mandrake 9.1 but not in 9.2. I have also use Capture to
mount my 3 ntfs partitions , again which I have mount manually.

Is there any way of doing a really simple script during bootup to mount
my drives and to set up the ra0 routing? My scripting skills are rusty
verging on non excistant, however, I can create the script to do the 4
actions required. I just need to know where to put it so that the bootup
script can pick it up.

Thanks and regards

Darryl

[newbie] the 2nd, 3rd vhost troubled

2004-01-05 Thread Fajar Priyanto

Hash: SHA1

Dear all,
I have this apache which runs on LAN:
Server Version: Apache-AdvancedExtranetServer/2.0.44 (Mandrake
  Linux/11mdk) mod_perl/1.99_08 Perl/v5.8.0 mod_ssl/2.0.44
  OpenSSL/0.9.7a PHP/4.3.1

I've also a running DNS on the LAN, and updated the records for my vhosts.

I tried to setup a NameVirtualHost like this:
NameVirtualHost 192.168.0.233:80

ServerName psb.sistek.kom
DocumentRoot /var/www/html/psb

ServerName phpmyadmin.sistek.kom
DocumentRoot /var/www/html/phpmyadmin

ServerName webmail.sistek.kom
DocumentRoot /var/www/html/webmail

The problem is:
psb.sistek.kom runs well
but, phpmyadmin.sistek.kom and webmail.sistek.kom open up their first page OK,
but got the page cannot be displayed for any page inside it.

On /var/log/httpd/error_log I got this:
[Mon Jan 05 11:11:51 2004] [error] [client 192.168.0.233] File does not exist:
/var/www/html/psb/phpmyadmin

Why on earth apache looks for phpmyadmin.sistek.kom INSIDE of psb.sistek.kom?
I thought I have set the DocumentRoot for each vhost?

What am I doing wrong here? If I move phpmyadmin's html inside of psb, it runs
smoothly.

Many thanks in advance for helping me, guys.
