Mine said 74 minutes or 650 mb. If yours says 700, they should hold that
much.

[newbie] Configuring for multiple networks

2004-01-19 Thread Smith, Robert A
I've installed Mandrake 9.2 on an IBM ThinkPad laptop computer. This machine
is used both at home and at my work location. In each case, it is connected
to a LAN. My network at home is set up using static IP addresses, with a DSL
router separating the machines from the Internet. At work, I am on a DHCP
network. In addition, a proxy server controls access to the Web.

Using the Mandrake Control Center, I created two profiles under Network &
Internet. I configured my Home profile while connected to that network and
did the same for the Work profile.

This process has left me with a couple of questions. To begin with, how do
you switch profiles? I have tried booting on the appropriate network,
opening Mandrake Control Center, and then selecting the desired profile from
the dropdown list. This does not appear to function correctly however. I end
up having to reconfigure and then the settings don't always take. Sometimes
I find myself going in and out of both Mandrake Control Center and also X
two or three times before the settings hold.

I have previously had two other distros on this machine. In SuSE 9.0
Professional, you would bring up YaST2 and from there you could configure
SCPM, SuSE's configuration profile manager. After I configured this, I could
control it at a prompt by issuing the command '# scpm switch {profilename}'.
In Fedora Core 1.0, I simply logged in as the root user, changed my IP
setting, subnet mask, and DNS server listing. I could then log in as a
normal user and all acted normally. I guess that I am looking for a method
to accomplish this task as easily in Mandrake.

Thanks,

Rob Smith

do you have hpoj 0.91 installed
and hpijs 1.5 installed
check out the wiki
I know that it's HP but it supports a lot of other printers too
uninstall your old hpoj first

hpoj appears to be for PSC devices. Perhaps my description of Konica was
somewhat lacking - this is a photocopier with an addon board that allows
network printing. The printing component emulates a Laserjet III - to
Linux, it looks like an HP3 connected to an lpr print server. This is not
your typical PSC device.

I can't find hpijs on my cd's. hpoj is not installed - neither is it
installed on a working MDK91 system. A list of installed rpm's is found at:
MDK91: http://www.execulink.com/~fbax/MDK92upg/rpmSandy.txt
MDK92: http://www.execulink.com/~fbax/MDK92upg/rpmChris.txt

Dang! Forgot to mention that...

Ya, do as Ronald suggested (uname -a), and when you do a

urpmi kernel-source

make sure to choose the version that matches the one you are running.

If you have already installed the wrong kernel source (check by doing 'rpm -q
kernel-source'), just 'urpme kernel-source' first.

It is not clear why it want to write to that specific directory in /xfce in

Well, if you don't actually have a machine called mail.jpearl.org, then you
need to get a wildcard setup so that all jperal.org machines will go to the

make: *** no rule to make target 'install'. Stop.
Stessa cosa succede con le versioni 2.7.8, 2.7.9 e 2.7.10 del driver.
Ho installato Mandrake solo da pochi giorni e sono completamente nuova
ai sistemi linux, quindi non esitate a darmi suggerimenti che possono
apparirvi scontati.
Grazie e ciao.

Pardon me, I've just telnetted to mail.jpearl.org port 25, and captured the
traffic with a network analyser.

The result: I send you SYN packets to set up the connection, you never reply.
I think that is what is termed "stealthed". Therefore I believe you have a
firewall installed somewhere. (Maybe at the ISP.) On a non-functioning
connection without a firewall I would expect to see a FIN/RST packet
returned. Of course those packets *might* be getting lost on the return trip.

burn at no more than 1/2 the rated speed of the burner

If you know how to do it in windows you should have no problem in
Mandrake. Use the wizard in Mandrake Control Center (MCC) to set it
up. It's much like setting a windows version up.

I can see bz2 files in the file list, but GQView showes them as unknown

I assume hda is your HDD? hdb for your CDrom is a bad
location. That's slave to your HDD, not a good mix. IMO, your
Cdrom should be hdc (master on the 2nd IDE channel), with your
burner as hdd (slave).

As to door won't open. Boot somethin else. If you don't have
another OS, install memtest86 (urpmi memtest86, or d/l the rpm
and install it by hand'). Boot memtest, will your CDrom tray
open? If not, it probly is a hardware problem. I recently had to
replace an old Cdrom for just that reason.

I always install from my burner (hdd). CD-RW's are better
readers than any CDrom. But, Mandrake insists on lookin to my
DVDrom for CD's. NBD, first thing I usually do is remove them as
sources anyhow. If you want to add your CDrom as source, then
follow the usuall CL advice given many times on this list (check
the archive). I don't know it, I always get rid of CDrom sources.

Please can anyone help me.
I have just installed 9.2 but i have no sound. I have tried the mixers
to no
avail, but if i mess with one or two of the sliders i can get a loud
noise.
When a program is running i get a faint hiss that goes with the nature
of
the program. My sound is onboard and is fine in windows.
Secondly I have no internet connection have tried to configure the lan
but
all i get is no ip address and no connection. The connection is fine in
windows but when I put it on I did have to maually set the connection
for
the lan. But I have no idea how to do it within linux...
I am hoping when my little problems are ironed out, that I will not need
windows any more.

greater than 650 meg. Are there CDs that hold more and still writable

do a "uname -a". In the info that follows, you'll find the version of the

Google turned this up for 'dsdt linux'
http://www.linux.com/howtos/ACPI-HOWTO/dsdt.shtml

For most all situation, Mandrake defaults to disabling ACPI.
Most hardware has problems with it. The only thing you can do,
AFAIK, is to try enabling it and see if it works. If if doesn't,
you'll need somebody smarter than me to help, or give up.
Generally, Google is your best friend.

On my recently new motherboard (desktop), Mandrake used
'acpi=ht', which is pretty standard. It disables acpi, but allows
for HT (hyper threading, which I don't have anyhow). I noticed
tho in '/var/log/dmesg' that there were some boot warnings,
'somethin wants IRQ3, but gets IRQ5', and another, 'somethin
about spurious IRQ7'.

Thinkin ACPI had nothin to do with IRQ handling, and havin APIC
enabled, I just ignored the mesgs for a while. Then I read
somethin somewhere (Goggle search) that mentioned enabling ACPI
to clear up those errors. I did and it did, and now going into
and out of idle power suspend is much more reliable. It also
cleared up a little occaisional scratchiness in alsa sound ouput

the Advanced Configuration part of ACPI, allows Advanced

Can you give us the exact printer make and model. I will check out
Linuxprinting.org to see if there are specific instructions or issues.

Konica is a printer/copier that uses HP III drivers. The usb printer is
Samsung ML1210.

One thing that has ocured to me overnight. What installation are you
running. Is your transcode install one of the various rpm installs, such

as PLF, or are you running the website cvs version ? The reason I ask
is that if transcode is like mplayer in regard to cvs versions they
don't automatically come with dcss libraries/decryption to decrypt the
mpeg2 vob files.
I may be lacking something in this direction, don't know, the transcode
website isn't very enlightening on that subject, merely references that

transcode is a one package install. That may, or may not enclude
decryption, I don't know ?
But mine is a cvs install.

no theres a mdk version.. i added the plf to my urpmi and then ran the urpmi dvdrip. it downloaded about 10 packages. then i had to make sure all the little tests said ok. then the program has been running flawlessly.

Ah, that sounds interesting then. Now that presents a problem for me,
not so easy to remove cvs versions, and I think I read somewhere about
not running rpm versions together with source code version, because of a
bug or conflict. Hmm, I will have to look into that.

well your dev hdb is your second cdrom drive so just put the disk in
that one or have you fixed this yet?
Well, the problem is that MDK recognises hdb as my cdrom, which is right.
For some reason, depite of this recognition I cannot open the drive since I
had Mandrake installed at the first time as a dual boot with win 2k. After
reformatting the harddrive and reinstalling MDK from the cd burner, which
went perfectly easy, I am always promted to put in the installation cds
into hdb, which is the non-reacting cdrom, whenever I want to install
software. The lights of the cdrom do work, so I think there cannot be a
mechanical problem. I simply cannot open it any longer. When I put in the
installation cds into the burnger MCC does not accept this. Is there a
possibility to 'deactivate' this stupid cdrom or to change the settings so
that I can install from the burner ? Thanks for your patience, --Bernhard

[newbie] installing gcc2.95

2004-01-19 Thread francesco de leonardis
Does anybody knows if it is possible, and in case how, to install gcc 2.95
with Mandrake 9.2?
I downloaded the rpm from Mandrake 7.2 and it seems to work but when
compiling it gives me compatibility problems with the glibc3.2.3 (while
actually I would need the glibc 3.1 but I don't know how to do it).
Thanks to everybody! Francesco

Sorry for my stupid question, but what is MCC? I think MDK wants to have
the cd in the drive I have no access to. Here is my fstab. Many thanks

/dev/hda1 / ext3 defaults 1 1 none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0

dev=/dev/hdb,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-15 0 0 none

MCC is Mandrake Control Center. You fstab looks OK to my non-expert
eyes. I suggest you go into MCC, run Harddrake for good measure, then go
to the Software Media Manager and check your CD sources.
