tell you which are animated, but I use Blue Glass XCursors 3D, and it has
animation.

Create a directory /home/your_username/.icons and put the directory containing
your cursor theme into that. Whichever cursor you want to use, name the
directory /home/your_username/.icons/default
That directory should contain the "cursors" directory for that theme, and the
"index.theme" file, both of which will be created when you unzip you cursor
tarball. My ~/.icons directory has a half dozen directorys inside, each
containing a different cursor theme. To choose a different cursor theme, I
just rename the chosen directory to "default", change the name of the old
default to something appropriate, and restart kde.

There is a front end for transcode called gtranscode, I've not used it

That seems to be a hardware problem. Have you tried mprime and the other
diagnostics on your system? mencoder does do a lot of work, but it
shouldn't lock your system up.

I've had success with both approaches. mencoder (or if you want
graphical, there's gmencoder) does produce quality video, although I've
only used it for DivX and mpeg4 stuff. DVD:rip is fairly easy to use,
but is slower, and it's mostly because there are a dozen or more
instances of transcode and other helper things behind the scenes doing
the actual work. With DVD:rip (and gmencoder) it's easier to 'size' the
resultant output so that you get an AVI that fits precisely on one 80
min CDR. Just using mencoder, that's not all that easy to do. And (for
me) I don't yet grok the transcode options -- they seem more daunting
than the mencoder ones -- and without doing a lot of looking, it seems
mencoder/mplayer is more documented than is transcode.

If you experiment with mencoder and come up with a good invocation that
works, you might as well make a shell script or an alias out of it since
figuring out those options the next time can be just as difficult.

Also, I haven't tried doing any VCDs yet. Hell, my older cheapie DVD
player won't play them, and my even older one claimed to but was not
able to play anything that's on CD-ROM (i.e, not store bought stuff), so
VCDs are of little use.

Without knowing more about your modem, it is very difficult to answer
your
question. It does sound, though, as if you may have a winmodem -- and
that
is
not a good thing. However, workarounds do exist. Take a look at these

(Also, if you haven't already done so, be sure to visit the site cited

By the way, you'll be way ahead of the game if you include a brief

[newbie] Newbie needs step-by-step instructions on Kernel upgrading

2004-01-22 Thread marc resnick
Here's the scoop:
I'd like to upgrade my kernel from 2.4.22 to 2.6.1. My machine is an i686(I
don't know what that means, so if someone would care to explain), and I have
a little over 10 GB in my whole Linux partition(4 for root, 5 for main, 1 for
swap). I have a habit of completely screwing up my system, so step-by-step
instructions would be greatly appreciated. If you're asking why I need to
upgrade my kernel, it's because I believe that 2.6.1 has built in acpi
support(correct me if I'm wrong). I've been googling on it for a while, but I
can never find clear instructions on exactly what I need to do.

Help would be nice =)

Source code for all packages are on the mirrors. For example
ftp://ftp.rediris.es/pub/linux/distributions/mandrake/9.2/SRPMS

These are .src.rpm packages if you just click on them with konqueror, they
will install themselves into /usr/src/RPM/SOURCES for the source code, and
the spec file which describes how the RPM is built will install into
/usr/src/RPM/SPECS.

You can compile a binary RPM from the source simply by cd ing to the SPEC
folder and entering
rpmbuild -bc specfile

see man 'rpmbuild'

Naturally you will need any compilers or 'devel packages the source needs to
be installed before it will compile successfully.

[newbie] KDE animated cursor

2004-01-22 Thread Doug
Hi all

I was wondering, is there a way to get KDE to use animated cursors? I have
looked a bit, but have not found any docs that might explain a way to use
them, or for that matter any ani cursors out there on KDE's site.

The one thing I do like about Winblow$ is the ability to easily use animated
cursors. I do have a collection of them and was wondering if it was possible
to use them in KDE.

I would appreciate any info, or pointing me in the direction of some docs.

I am currently using KDE 3.1 on MDK 9.1 on a Toshiba Tecra 8000 laptop.

Thanks for any help.

Hello,

I'm sorry I don't have an answer to your question, but this seemed like a
perfect opportunity to ask the list about updates. I thought that I had seen
a CD for sale on the Mandrake site that was a compendium of all the updates
for the last release (this would have been 9.0). Was I imagining it? Could I
possible get one for 9.1?

You`d be best off with a src.rpm or better yet an original tarball. When you
have untarred it, look at the INSTALL, README files and other text files in
the base directory. Then see what options there are with ./configure --help
and you should be able to install the glibc 2.95 or 3.1 into different
directories then those in which your 3.2.3 is installed.

To check where MD 9.2 wrote all the 3.2.3 files, do (as root):

rpm -ql glibc

When you start the programme which requires availability of glibc 2.95 or
3.1 (I am assuming that`s why your asking), you may have to point it to the
paths where you installed 2.95 or 3.1
