Re: [newbie] PowerPC 5500/225 Mandrake Install?
I've successfully setup Yellow Dog, Mandrake, Gentoo and Debian on my Powerbook Pismo, so it's certainly worth trying to put Mandrake on your old tower. The PPC versions of the distros are a little behind the x86 versions, but they are certainly useable. The only thing that is a pain in the butt for your computer is it's an Old World machine and will need BootX to get into Linux. Still, it's worth trying, even for the learning experience. [newbie] How to go about creating a new partition.
Last time I tried to make a partition to give Linux more hard drive space, I completely screwed up Linux. Here's my plan for doing it this time. If there's anything I might screw up by doing this, please tell me. 1. Use Partition Magic in windows to resize my NTFS Windows Partition. 2. Boot Linux, use Diskdrake to create a partition from the free space, place it at the end of the sector.(I want to use Linux to do this so it 'knows' that I added this partition. Last time I think the problem was that it took mdk by surprise, screwing up the labels.) 3. Do ln /home/marc /mnt/nameofpartition Sound good? Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? It looks like my problem is that man pager (or the program preprocessing man texts) is wrongly formatting Polish man pages and changing native letters to a mess like "9| " instead of "¶", "c" instead of "¿", etc. I was hoping to find such settings in man.config to allow me to alter this behavour (because I cannot even read fast this thing). I haven't actually done this but if you have a profile "default" then unison -ui text -batch will run unison in text mode and the batch option means "do not ask any questions" so any conflicts will not be copied. That's OK, you seem to read and answer to this list on almost as many boxes as I sometimes do. I'm sure Slack Ware modifies the "Vanilla" kernel to at least the same extent that Mandrake and all other distributions do, so I'm also certain there are incompatibilities between all of those distributions' kernels. HB:Likely true. Probably the best solution for that would be to insert the install CD again and then opt for "upgrade". It's a short procedure (as everything's already uptodate) which usually repairs the messed up Windowmanagers. HB:I found module upgrade and used it Good luck, HB:I could use some. Actually I used mine up. The results here were obtained by doing what the previous text suggested. The result was no different than the last time. How do I kill xdm, kdm, or gdm? How do I start them back up? Maybe that will help. Regards; Hoyt Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

They as a business piss me off, and their distro isn't great either. As for using Mandrake as a server; That's fine. I used Mandrake as one of my MP3 servers. Not like illegal mp3 server, but where I used it around my house for back ups and to listen to music. I can't see why anyone would think any Linux distro other than Lindows would make a bad server, hell Windows gets away with being called a server OS. Free BSD makes a good server too. But I have also known people who have installed Free BSD, went to sleep, and woke up to a rooted box. I have a friend who installed Mandrake as a server and got rooted too. Point being, it doesn't matter what distro you use, it matters how you use it. I use SuSE, Mandrake, and Slackware the most. I like them. I don't dual boot at all anymore, but this is my Slackware box. I use other boxes for each. -- __ We Are 138 http://www.suse.com http://www.slackware.org http://www.bsd.org http://www.daemonnews.org/ http://www.cannibalholocaust.net http://www.misfits.com http://www.onethirtyeight.com Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Seriously, it's almost a twin to Adaptec's EZ CD Creator, and it doesn't give a hoot about being configured as root or anyone else. Just install one RPM, refresh your menu ( menudrake ), and you'll find it waiting in the same section that other CD burning apps sit in. Launch it, click on "Detect", and set the recording speed of the burner. In almost 3 years, on any version of Mandrake, it hasn't given me one bad burn, and took less than a minute to install and setup, after refreshing the menu. With that kind of stability, why go elsewhere? It even has an intro panel so that you can pre-select the type of burn you want to do. This one's a 12 in my book. Thanks Dan and Lanman - I'm downloading both of these now. Ease of use is crucial; if it were just me, I'd be happy to just use the command line for burning, but Windows users have to use this box on occasion, as it's the only one in the office with CD-RW. BUT, I found a better solution, which so far today has caught 18/18 spams received today! Spamassasin stopped working for me too beginning of this year, when the majority of my spam was a combination of random words. Seems from what I read somewhere that spamassasin has big issues differentiating these mails from normal ones. http://sourceforge.net/projects/bmf/ You have to "train" it too actually, and I was fully set up within 30 minutes, which included the installation, and reading the readme. If you try it though, there is an error in the README's procmail entry though, and it should read: ### begin sample two ### # Invoke bmf as a filter :0 fw | bmf -p # Filter spam :0: * ^X-Spam-Status: Yes $MAILDIR/spam That is with a * before "^X-Spam-Status: Yes" So far, with only 1 day's testing though it's been 100% accurate which is great. Even easier, as root: urpmi kdeartwork and if its there, you'll get this: [EMAIL PROTECTED] darklord]# urpmi kdeartwork Everything already installed otherwise, it should install it, from wherever you have your sources defined. Hm ok I will give that a try, when I have some time. I had been trying from XFce4. I had a similar problem and solved it by doing urpmi bit by bit. First I installed something basic to get the essential KDE libraries in place, then progressed through network and multimedia. Some packages have dependencies from contrib, so that might be what's giving you a headache. I thought that might work too, thats how i ended up with everything but the base stuff installed which just would not go. I also borked k3b in the process, but I think that was my fault. I think removing 3.1.3 automatically removes k3b because of dependency's, IE kde needs to be there before k3b. Yes, the problem was that it wouldn't reinstall afterwards because of conflicts.
