I'm still not certain whether you are asking whether you can use a different browser than Konqueror, or whether you want to be able to open the links in tabs. I suspect it is the second one. However, both these possibilities are set in kde's Control Center. In 9.2 look for Configure Your Desktop. Then find Web Browsing > Behaviour. You can configure tabs there. (I'm using 9.1 on this box, but I think it's in the same place in 9.2). To change which browser you use, you also need the Control Center, but this time it's in Components > File Associations > text > html . You will see a list of the browsers you have installed. Re: [newbie] Kde 3.2 revisited
Are you using rpms made for 9.2 or cooker rpms? If the latter, you're going to have some real headaches regarding dependencies. Better to get a set of 9.2 rpms. (see pclinuxonline.com about 10 days ago for a link to a site with 9.2 rpms. If you follow the read more.. link, you'll also find a bittorrent file for them and a faster mirror.) If you download all the 9.2 rpms to a single directory, you can rpm -Uvh *.rpm from that directory and it should handle all the dependencies since you're upgrading a 3.1 installation (yes?). Any external dependencies should be minimal and you can probably track them down quickly, possibly through "Install Software". Now next time you buy a motherboard, check around for one that has a second bios backup already onboard and doesn't need a DOS boot floppy, or Windoze runnin, to flash the bios. If for any reason the flash fails, or the bios is corrupted (Winsux virus?), the board automatically boots from the backup bios chip. Many of the newer boards are movin to this. Some have had it for years. Have you any particular makes in mind. My mobo is now 2 years old, did it have this bios backup then ? I don't remember it being the case, though it may well of been. Currently I'm usin an Asus A7V600, KT600 chipset. http://www.asus.com/prog/spec.asp?m=A7V600&langs=01# BUT, I'll refrain from recommending motherboards. It's too much of a moving target for desktop hardware. My only advice would be to consult http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_869_4348^7923,00.html Then go to the websites for the AMD recommended boards and start makin a shortlist of those that fit your requirements. Then check for Linux compatibility. At this time, a VIA chipset board is probly the best bet, SiS might be OK. Unfortunately there's little such sources for Intel based systems, but I don't believe they've _yet_ to come up with a decent P4 chipset anyhow. I'd favor an Intel based system for production server use tho. ...and avoid hardware reviews where the test OS was Windoze. If more people did that, there wouldn't be so many Linux users tryin to run on nForce chipset boards ;) Probly a good idea to look for a board that's been out for 4 to 6 months. Both for Linux user experience, and it'll probly come with the latest bios version. IOW's avoid the latest and greatest. Usually cheaper that way anyhow ;) Sure, my sentiments entirely , let the others buy the very last word, choose the one that's been around for some months at least. I shall not be buying again until after Christmas , so sometime next February I will want to be looking to construct afresh. Whats your thinking about 64 bit architecture. I read recently AMD have a chip that runs both 32 and 64bit though I don't know what mobos will suit. Will Mandrake keep up with this developement ? Will anyone be shipping OS's for 64 bit by this time next year? I just don't have enough time to do the searching for equipement and such like, tend to leave that to others, and take advice, but I still like to keep up with general developements. Will there be cpu's of 64bit and fsb of 400 around by next year and mobo's to suit? What do you feel ? What's happening by then ? My current best computer will be my second fiddle and the oldest junked, natuarlly I'm keen to make the best buy's but just don't have the inclination to spend hours and hours reading up on it all. The second method would be to not install a Mandrake bootloader at all (I suppose you could still install to root partition) and then boot directly from the Suse menu.lst If you want to chainload, install Mandrake and then boot into SUSE and add the following stanza to your menu.lst title Mandrake root (hd0,7) chainloader +1 If you want to boot Mandrake directly from SUSE, the menu.lst stanza should look something like this: title Mandrake kernel (hd0,7)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda8 vga=788 splash=silent \ hdd=ide-scsi initrd (hd0,7)/boot/initrd > Thanks again for your patience and replies! Either way, do not let bootloader install to mbr when you install Mandrake. This will cause you not to be able to boot back into SUSE, as Mandrake will set up Windows but not SUSE as a bootloader entry. If you let Mandrake install bootloader to mbr because you want to let Mandrake boot SUSE, you have to add an entry for SUSE into the Mandrake menu.lst after installing Mandrake. In this case, you would install Mandrake's bootloader to the mbr. This IMO is more risky because you already have grub working correctly in SUSE. Also, keep in mind that the Mandrake default bootloader is LILO, so if you want to use grub in Mandrake, you would have to make sure that you explicitly select it for configuration at the installation summary screen. Bootom line is that one of your Linux distros is going to have to control the boot process and it is probably easier to select SUSE for this. -- /g Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] its installed
i did the install last night. i ran all the updates this morning. it was actually easier than a rh install, and i've run rh since the 2.0 daysup and including fedora. at that point i gave up. the bugs were unbelievable. i tried lindows and while the install went flawless, i didn't agree with the cnr thing one bit, especially for softyware that i KNOW i can download leagaly and freely on any other distro. so i tried mandrake, 9.2. i do have one small disappointment. real player plugins for mozilla were not installed automatically. so i'll have to do those myself. no biggie, but i noticed that lindows had all the video plugins already installed for mozzilla. that was a nice bonus. i am downloading the ut2k4 demo that was just released. i'm crossing my fingers that mandrake and i did the right install for the video stuff and that the 3d hardware drivers will work correctly. rh was NEVER able to do it, and i spent days, hours and weeks trying to get the right drivers installed, to no avail. i've just gotten to the point where my time is valuable and i want to enjoy my computer expeirences, not spend all my time fighting to configure something that won't work. so tonight, or tommorow, i'll install my ut2k4 game and see if its a GAME, or a slide show presentation (grin) :-) thanks for the help so far, and for the points y'all gave to make this install a particularly good one! in the default windowmaker environment, is it possible to add programs to the task bar (if thats what its called) that appears on the right side of the screen when you log in, on the desktop? i really hate digging through menus for the 6-8 programs i'll be using ALL the time, ya know what i mean? thanks! [newbie] Belkin Gold Series UPS - its time to pull my hair out!!
Hello all, I am trying to setup some basic shutdown software (i.e. oh look I am on batteries I had better shutdown soon :-) for a Belkin UPS I have hooked up to a Linux-based PC router. The model I have connects to a serial port on the PC. I am using MDK 9.2 on the router with a custom 2.4.22 TMB kernel with serial support statically compiled into the kernel. I tried the Belkin Linux software specifying ttyS0 (my MB only has one RS232 port as it has an onboard VPU) for the serial connection. But I get the message: 1 2/14/2004 11:45:33 in the PRO_UPS.LOG file. The GTK/Gnome Monitor GUI window appears to work fine and can connect to the local upsd process but I get the following problem: UPS Comm Disconnect has warning red light beside it in the UPS status window. So the upsd deamon process cannot connect to the UPS. All the status UPS model details, graphs and dials are blank due there being no connection to the UPS... I have tried the RPM that someone built for the Fedora kernel (with even less success). I have tried the NUT RPM for MDK but apparently this doesn't appear to work either. (I tried making a special ups_serv user and putting the device and config files under this user). The support hardware section says that driver should support my hardware but needs the proprietary driver installed first (which I did). Again the upsd process couldn't connect to the UPS. Anyone had any joy getting this model (Gold Series) to work with Linux? The Belkin Linux GUI is very nice if only it could see the UPS hardware... :-) -- Best regards, Robert mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? This doesn't happen any more! When I select 'Turn off computer' I get a black screen with a white mouse pointer arrow in the middle, keyboard and mouse don't work, and nothing shuts down - I have to switch off the power switch button. When I switch on next day, system complains that it has shut down 'uncleanly'. Only way I've found to get a clean shutdown now is to open a terminal, su to root (doesn't work as user!), and do 'shutdown -h -t 10 now'. What have I done? How do I fix it? Seems ridiculous that I have to be root to shut down the computer! Is this some sort of permissions problem? Only allowing root to be able to shut down the computer goes way back to the early days of Unix, where you didn't want ordinary users to be able to shut down or reboot terminals. Consequently, AFAIK it is still the default on Unix-type systems. Make sure that auto-login is off in MCC, then enable it in KDE (System -> Login Manager, and click Administrator Mode). That might do the trick. Occasionally some other system change will reset it, which might be the cause of your problem (for example, I had to go back and put in the settings I wanted after updating KDE). Sir Robin Thanks for the suggestion Robin. Unfortunately I don't have a 'Login Manager' option on the System section (or anywhere else) on my KDE menu. Can you (or some other kind person) tell me what the package is called, so I can call it up from a terminal? Up until a couple of weeks ago, I used to be able to click on the Logout button, get a choice of 3 options (Login as different user; Turn off computer; Restart computer) select 'Turn off computer', and everything would gradually shut down and eventually the power would switch off. Margot love did you try K->configure your computer(MCC)-->system_>boot uncheck autologon I've never had autologin enabled, but I checked to make sure it hadn't somehow enabled itself - I don't trust these machines! - but it isn't. Re: [newbie] How do I install Mandrake and 'triple boot'?
Trey Sizemore wrote: I have a machine currently setup with Win2000 (6GB) and SUSE 9.0 taking up the remainder of an 80GB hard drive. I downloaded the ISOs for Mandrake 10 Beta 2 and wanted to give it a try on this machine. I'm currently using GRUB as my bootloader. How would I go about installing Mandrake such that I have a triple boot environment? Will it natively offer to resize the SUSE partition to make room or should I use something like Partition Magic to resize them? Once done, how should the bootloader be handled so that I can choose any of the three to boot into? If someone has done something like this before, I'd appreciate the input! Thanks. There are a few things you will have to decide. Where is your current SUSE /boot directory ? Are you going to convert to a /boot PARTITION. Having a /boot partition is easiest, But having seperate /boot directories , one for each OS can be made to work. I prefer to have a /boot partition, the install is all automatic, just a question of making sure grub/lilo has stanzas to boot both OS's I have to say first that I have never worked with SUSE before so maybe it does things differently from the rest of linux, I don't think so, though. Did you use PM to partition for SUSE ? is so continue to use it. John -- John Richard Smith [EMAIL PROTECTED] Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

If so and it is a trusted source you may like to try my solution. I create a folder for those mails and a filter to put them there. Highlight the folder, then go to Folder in the menus and enable html - it will not affect any other folder. Anne -- Registered Linux User No.293302 Have you visited http://twiki.mdklinuxfaq.org yet? The various replacements for Acrobat generally work well as viewers, but are nowhere near as good as Acrobat for printing. I regularly use the option to shrink to A5 format - saves paper and storage space. Unless things have moved on very recently you simply can't do that in any of the other options.
