Hi, Charlie. That's exactly what he'll find in the Troubleshooting

No, Philip. I think you didn't see the tests. Click the
Troubleshooting button. It will give you a list of commands to run
in a console. Try each one, then copy the command and the result of
it into a text file, leave a line or two, then append the next
command and output. When you've run all the commands, paste the text
into a mail to us.

I've got 20 different screen savers listed in my 10.0rc2 configuration
without
having to take any special steps. Maybe I missed something way early in
this
thread, but where are the KDE packages falling short? I can't remember

I dont know what happened to the rest of the screensavers but I cant find
them and cant download any from mandrake (urpmi screensaver). But that
slide show saver is exactly what I want. At the same time gnome has a
variety when involking screen lock, but will not engage a screensaver
normally. If I knew why I'd be an expert.

I'm surprised I haven't posted this yet for February. I usually post it once a
month at least.

classic bug sound tester:

"lspcidrake -v | fgrep AUDIO" will tell you which driver your card use
by default

"grep sound-slot /etc/modules.conf" will tell you what driver it
currently uses

"/sbin/lsmod" will enable you to check if its module (driver) is
loaded or not

"/sbin/chkconfig --list sound" and "/sbin/chkconfig --list alsa" will
tell you if sound and alsa services're configured to be run on
initlevel 3

"aumix -q" will tell you if the sound volume is muted or not

"/sbin/fuser -v /dev/dsp" will tell which program uses the sound card.

Ah - I think I see You want to open urls in a browser window. I'm
still not certain whether you are asking whether you can use a
different browser than Konqueror, or whether you want to be able to
open the links in tabs. I suspect it is the second one. However,
both these possibilities are set in kde's Control Center. In 9.2
look for Configure Your Desktop. Then find Web Browsing > Behaviour.
You can configure tabs there. (I'm using 9.1 on this box, but I
think it's in the same place in 9.2).

To change which browser you use, you also need the Control Center, but
this time it's in Components > File Associations > text > html . You
will see a list of the browsers you have installed. Select the one
you want, and use Move Up to put it at the top of the list. HTH

To get the Matrix screensaver, you can download the original
xscreensaver tarball. I heard it's not on the Mdk RPMs because of
possible copyright problems.

I hate Compaq! I've done a couple of installs on them, and they pretty much
suck. Installation wasn't really the problem, the hardware they use isn't
very good, and Linux does not like marginal hardware. Probably the worst
install I've ever done was 9.1 on a Compaq laptop--it is now working, but I
call it the "Install from Hell".

It should be noted in the BIOS section of your MOBO manual, if not then

Re: [newbie] Kde 3.2 revisited

2004-02-14 Thread Paul Kaplan
Are you using rpms made for 9.2 or cooker rpms? If the latter, you're going
to have some real headaches regarding dependencies. Better to get a set of
9.2 rpms. (see pclinuxonline.com about 10 days ago for a link to a site with
9.2 rpms. If you follow the read more.. link, you'll also find a bittorrent
file for them and a faster mirror.) If you download all the 9.2 rpms to a
single directory, you can rpm -Uvh *.rpm from that directory and it should
handle all the dependencies since you're upgrading a 3.1 installation (yes?).
Any external dependencies should be minimal and you can probably track them
down quickly, possibly through "Install Software".

In Userdrake, user 'margot' is already shown as a member of all

However, in Kcontrol - System Administration - Login Manager - Sessions
- Allow Shutdown there is a choice of "Everybody", "Only root", or

Find your soundcard, and tell us what it says about it. It should
also tell you which driver it is using. The Run Config Tool should
give you something similar to the attached jpg. The

Hve done all that I think, the sound card is onboard via vt8233 and
the driver in use is
snd-via82xx
but the other people who have solved the same problem have done it
via the alsa project with oss drivers but I do not know what to do.

I think that's the also driver - someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
Did you try the test in the Troubleshooting section? Please copy and
paste the output from those commands.

I shouldn't come in here because I haven't been following this thread,
but my via 8233 sound chip works on my MSI mobo and the modules.conf
looks like this.
above snd-via82xx snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-slot-0 snd-via82xx

if that's any help.

Well good John. Now next time you buy a motherboard,

or the bios is corrupted (Winsux virus?), the board
automatically boots from the backup bios chip. Many of the
newer boards are movin to this. Some have had it for years.

My mobo is now 2 years old, did it have this bios backup then

Then go to the websites for the AMD recommended boards and
start makin a shortlist of those that fit your requirements. Then
check for Linux compatibility. At this time, a VIA chipset board
is probly the best bet, SiS might be OK.

Unfortunately there's little such sources for Intel based

decent P4 chipset anyhow. I'd favor an Intel based system for
production server use tho.

If more people did that, there wouldn't be so many Linux users
tryin to run on nForce chipset boards ;) Probly a good idea to
look for a board that's been out for 4 to 6 months. Both for
Linux user experience, and it'll probly come with the latest bios

that way anyhow ;)

Sure, my sentiments entirely , let the others buy the very last word,

I will want to be looking to construct afresh. Whats your thinking

both 32 and 64bit though I don't know what mobos will suit. Will
Mandrake keep up with this developement ? Will anyone be shipping OS's
for 64 bit by this time next year?

I just don't have enough time to do the searching for equipement and
such like, tend to leave
that to others, and take advice, but I still like to keep up with
general developements. Will there be cpu's of 64bit and fsb of 400
around by next year and mobo's to suit? What do you feel ? What's
happening by then ?

My current best computer will be my second fiddle and the oldest junked,

WindowMaker is the default environment? It was KDE the last time I
checked. I personally use XFCE4. You might wanna give that a try, cause
it has a task bar like thing that u can add programs to, and even menus
to each program in it. That might sound a bit confusing, but visit

Heh, you should know me better by nowthat one's meant for on a console, if
need be without X.

Just type in "cmatrix" and hit .
Even runs on a 386 with only text install:)

What you're looking for is probably gmatrix or glmatrix.

There are two ways to do this, the first is to let Mandrake install it's
standard LILO to the root partition of the mandrake install and not the mbr,
then chainload it from your grub menu as you would windows. The second
method would be to not install a Mandrake bootloader at all (I suppose you
could still install to root partition) and then boot directly from the Suse
menu.lst

If you want to chainload, install Mandrake and then boot into SUSE and add the
following stanza to your menu.lst

title Mandrake
root (hd0,7)
chainloader +1

If you want to boot Mandrake directly from SUSE, the menu.lst stanza should
look something like this:

title Mandrake
kernel (hd0,7)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda8 vga=788 splash=silent \
  hdd=ide-scsi
initrd (hd0,7)/boot/initrd

> Thanks again for your patience and replies!

Either way, do not let bootloader install to mbr when you install Mandrake.
This will cause you not to be able to boot back into SUSE, as Mandrake will
set up Windows but not SUSE as a bootloader entry. If you let Mandrake
install bootloader to mbr because you want to let Mandrake boot SUSE, you
have to add an entry for SUSE into the Mandrake menu.lst after installing
Mandrake. In this case, you would install Mandrake's bootloader to the mbr.
This IMO is more risky because you already have grub working correctly in
SUSE. Also, keep in mind that the Mandrake default bootloader is LILO, so if
you want to use grub in Mandrake, you would have to make sure that you
explicitly select it for configuration at the installation summary screen.

Bootom line is that one of your Linux distros is going to have to control the
boot process and it is probably easier to select SUSE for this.

This may be beyond the realm of my current understanding. Here's my
current /boot/grub/menu.lst in SUSE:

###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: linux###
title Linux

initrd (hd0,6)/boot/initrd

###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name:

And my filesystem setup (although swap doesn't appear to be
displayed??):

linux:~ # df -h

/dev/hda1 5.9G 2.5G 3.4G 43% /windows/C
tmpfs 252M 0 252M 0% /dev/shm

So I guess I still don't understand:
1) Will Mandrake offer the ability to resize my ReiserFS SUSE
partition?
2) Will Mandrake share utilize the existing SWAP partition already
setup for SUSE?
3) What should I choose at the bootloader step to get Mandrake to
appear as an option in my current bootloader menu?

Thanks again for your patience and replies!

I going to chime in with a few words about the KT600.

Be aware that the 2.4 kernel Only supports the KT600 in 2X mode for
graphics cards.
If you have a 'newer' high performance card and especially if you use
the nvidia or fglrx driver you will Not be able to have hardware
acceleration because the via_agp module can not be loaded Unless the
included BIOS allows for the selection of 2X mode.

Don't know about others but on my Soyo Dragon I can set it for either
4 or 8 but not 2 which meant no dri with my Radeon 9600XT and the
9.2 kernels.

The fact won't affect Tom as he use nv.
In my case I rebuilt the 2.6.2-1.tmb.1mdkenterprise for usage on my 9.2

To get the Matrix screensaver, you can download the original

I think that's the also driver - someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
Did you try the test in the Troubleshooting section? Please copy and

Currently I'm usin an Asus A7V600, KT600 chipset.
http://www.asus.com/prog/spec.asp?m=A7V600&langs=01#

BUT, I'll refrain from recommending motherboards. It's too
much of a moving target for desktop hardware. My only advice
would be to consult
http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_869_4348^7923,00.html

Then go to the websites for the AMD recommended boards and
start makin a shortlist of those that fit your requirements. Then
check for Linux compatibility. At this time, a VIA chipset board
is probly the best bet, SiS might be OK.

Unfortunately there's little such sources for Intel based
systems, but I don't believe they've _yet_ to come up with a
decent P4 chipset anyhow. I'd favor an Intel based system for
production server use tho.

...and avoid hardware reviews where the test OS was Windoze.
If more people did that, there wouldn't be so many Linux users
tryin to run on nForce chipset boards ;) Probly a good idea to
look for a board that's been out for 4 to 6 months. Both for
Linux user experience, and it'll probly come with the latest bios
version. IOW's avoid the latest and greatest. Usually cheaper
that way anyhow ;)

OK, let's do this by the numbers.

1) Download the KDE32 rpms to your PC before i have to shut the FTP
server down - it goes down in 2 hours.

2) Make a note of where you saved the KDE32 directory and let me know
where you have placed it.

3) We'll move ahead after you get back to me.

Dale; You're best bet is to download the whole folder from my server as
i have to shut it down on Saturday. Once you have it on your PC, then
use the following command which assumes that your KDE32 folder is in
"/home/dale"

urpmi.addmedia KDE32 file://home/dale/kde32/ with hdlist.cz

Just copy and paste that line into a root user's shell or console.
Modify the path if you store the KDE32 folder somewhere else.

As a follow up, you can make Grub boot Mandrake directly off of the MBR, but
you have to let one of the Linux distros be the Grub master so to speak.
Once you get all three booting using the chainloader, you can try booting to
Suse and then adding a stanza to boot mandrake right off of its own
partition. This is the way I do it, my Grub menu.lst

[newbie] its installed

2004-02-14 Thread Harold E Vine III
i did the install last night. i ran all the updates this morning.
it was actually easier than a rh install, and i've run rh since the 2.0 daysup and

and while the install went flawless, i didn't agree with the cnr thing one bit,
especially for softyware that i KNOW i can download leagaly and freely on any other
distro.

so i tried mandrake, 9.2.

i do have one small disappointment.

real player plugins for mozilla were not installed automatically.
so i'll have to do those myself. no biggie, but i noticed that lindows had all the
video plugins already installed for mozzilla. that was a nice bonus.

i am downloading the ut2k4 demo that was just released.

i'm crossing my fingers that mandrake and i did the right install for the video stuff
and that the 3d hardware drivers will work correctly. rh was NEVER able to do it, and
i spent days, hours and weeks trying to get the right drivers installed, to no avail.

i've just gotten to the point where my time is valuable and i want to enjoy my
computer expeirences, not spend all my time fighting to configure something that won't
work.

so tonight, or tommorow, i'll install my ut2k4 game and see if its a GAME, or a slide
show presentation (grin) :-)

thanks for the help so far, and for the points y'all gave to make this install a
particularly good one!

in the default windowmaker environment, is it possible to add programs to the task bar

Philip, open up Mandrake Control Center > Hardware and HardDrake.
Find your soundcard, and tell us what it says about it. It should
also tell you which driver it is using. The Run Config Tool should
give you something similar to the attached jpg. The Troubleshooting
button gives you tests that you can run from a root console. If
there are alternative drivers they will be in the drop-down list.
Run those tests, and give us the results.

Have you visited http://twiki.mdklinuxfaq.org yet?

Hve done all that I think, the sound card is onboard via vt8233 and the
driver in use is
snd-via82xx
but the other people who have solved the same problem have done it via the
alsa project with oss drivers but I do not know what to do.

In contrast to the BBC's error-ridden efforts, an excellent summary.
Particularly impressive is the author's understanding that Open Source
is far from being just OSS (Open Source Software):

Hello Hoyt,

What exactly are you missing?

Don't you have any Screensavers listed under the Screensaver module in
KControl --> Look & Feel?

I know the xscreensaver package works too.

NO, NO, NO

You want to install mandrake bootloader in partition, not on MBR. You will
not be able to boot SuSE if you do this. You want to chainload Mandrake
bootloader just like windows.

Install Mandrake's bootloader in the root partition and then boot to linux and
add a stanza to Grub's menu.lst kind of like the windows one

title WindowsXP
root (hd0,0)
chainloader +1

title Mandrake
root (hd0,7) <== Put the drive partition number that you installed
chainloader +1 Mandrake on here. Remember that 1st partition
is zero.

[newbie] Kde 3.2 revisited

2004-02-14 Thread Mark Annandale
Hi Folks

Sorry to bring this up again, as I'm sure its been asked, but where are
the newbie archives these days. I only seem to be able to find up to
November last year.

I have downloaded all the 3.2 RPM's, but having a tough time trying to
install them, lots of dependency problems. Google hasn't been much help
either.

Please could someone point me at some means of installing 3.2. By the
way I'm running version 9.2.

Many thanks as always.

[newbie] Screensavers

2004-02-14 Thread Hoyt Bailey
As usual I'm lost again. While researching screensavers I could find no
screensaver packages on the mandrake site. But I did find some updates to
files that indicated they would fix the problem(install by default). I then
did an update and none of the files were installed & would not install with
urpmi. The packages that were installed didnt seem to relate to the
packages that were installed, The files were
kdebase-3.0.3-11mdk, -23mdk, -27mdk &
mandrake_desk-9.0-14mdk, -15mdk, -17mdk, -18mdk(8 files). I also tried
urpmi kdebase-3.0.3, but that didnt work so I gave up on that track.

Next I located a  screensaver package for KDE;
kdeartwork-screensavers-3.0.4-3.i686.rpm
issued rpm -ivv [^^]
That failed due to dependences on libpng.so.2, libstdc++.so.2.10, &
fam.libs. These also wouldnt install with rpm -ivv --addfiles or urpmi
.

Obviously I dont know what I'm doing. How about some guidance.

Hoyt

[newbie] Belkin Gold Series UPS - its time to pull my hair out!!

2004-02-14 Thread Robert Walker
Hello all,

I am trying to setup some basic shutdown software (i.e. oh look I am
on batteries I had better shutdown soon :-) for a Belkin UPS I have
hooked up to a Linux-based PC router.

The model I have connects to a serial port on the PC. I am using MDK
9.2 on the router with a custom 2.4.22 TMB kernel with serial support
statically compiled into the kernel.

I tried the Belkin Linux software specifying ttyS0 (my MB only has one
RS232 port as it has an onboard VPU) for the serial connection. But
I get the message:
1 2/14/2004 11:45:33
in the PRO_UPS.LOG file.

The GTK/Gnome Monitor GUI window appears to work fine and can connect
to the local upsd process but I get the following problem:

UPS Comm Disconnect

has warning red light beside it in the UPS status window. So the upsd
deamon process cannot connect to the UPS. All the status UPS model details,
graphs and dials are blank due there being no connection to the
UPS...

I have tried the RPM that someone built for the Fedora kernel
(with even less success).

I have tried the NUT RPM for MDK but apparently this doesn't appear to
work either. (I tried making a special ups_serv user and putting the
device and config files under this user). The support hardware section
says that driver should support my hardware but needs the
proprietary driver installed first (which I did). Again the upsd
process couldn't connect to the UPS.

Anyone had any joy getting this model (Gold Series) to work with
Linux? The Belkin Linux GUI is very nice if only it could see the UPS
hardware... :-)

Just a "Not-So-Subtle" reminder folks. I have to shut down FTP access to
KDE 3.2 and Texstar's Mozilla packages at precisely 12 noon today. If
you're currently using my server as media source in URPMI, you're in

Please log in and download the packages to your own PC's and store them
somewhere. My monthly throughput is already sitting at 19 Gigs, leaving
me 6 more for the rest of the month.

Sorry, but they won't be upping my limit until next month, so I have
little choice. To those that managed to get the packages, i hope things

Only allowing root to be able to shut down the computer goes way back
to the early days of Unix, where you didn't want ordinary users to be
able to shut down or reboot terminals. Consequently, AFAIK it is still
the default on Unix-type systems.
Make sure that auto-login is off in MCC, then enable it in KDE (System
-> Login Manager, and click Administrator Mode). That might do the
trick. Occasionally some other system change will reset it, which
might be the cause of your problem (for example, I had to go back and
put in the settings I wanted after updating KDE).

Thanks for the suggestion Robin. Unfortunately I don't have a 'Login
Manager' option on the System section (or anywhere else) on my KDE menu.

Don't go through the menu, go to the KDE Control Center (which normally
appears on the menu as "Configure your desktop"). Sorry, I should have
made that clear.

Mandrake 10 Beta 2 and wanted to give it a try on this machine. I'm
currently using GRUB as my bootloader.
How would I go about installing Mandrake such that I have a triple boot
environment? Will it natively offer to resize the SUSE partition to
make room or should I use something like Partition Magic to resize them?
Once done, how should the bootloader be handled so that I can choose any
of the three to boot into?
If someone has done something like this before, I'd appreciate the
input!
Thanks.

There are a few things you will have to decide.
Where is your current SUSE /boot directory ?
Are you going to convert to a /boot PARTITION.
Having a /boot partition is easiest,
But having seperate /boot directories ,
one for each OS can be made to work.
I prefer to have a /boot partition, the install
is all automatic, just a question
of making sure grub/lilo has stanzas
to boot both OS's
I have to say first that I have never worked
with SUSE before so maybe it does things
differently from the rest of linux, I don't
think so, though.
Did you use PM to partition for SUSE ?
is so continue to use it.

Sorry to hear that Philip. Is it worth one last try? A new thread,
short definition of the problem and summary of all the things you
have tried. Post it to this list, and also to the expert list

Is this message likely to be html? If so and it is a trusted source
you may like to try my solution. I create a folder for those mails
and a filter to put them there. Highlight the folder, then go to
Folder in the menus and enable html - it will not affect any other
folder.

The various replacements for Acrobat generally work well as viewers,
but are nowhere near as good as Acrobat for printing. I regularly
use the option to shrink to A5 format - saves paper and storage
space. Unless things have moved on very recently you simply can't do
that in any of the other options.

Thanks, Lanman. One question, though. I don't use streaming media
normally, so I've no idea how to play it. Do you save to disk? What
app do you use to play it? Is there a Moz plugin to deal with it?
OK - a lot of questions, but one subject

Don't know anything about it - never heard of it - and from your

The e-mail address for the program is:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Yes, it was Gillian Lacey-Solymar who did the item. I'll send an e-mail and
see if it does any good.

I am retired and we watch it while we are having our "sandwich and piece of
cake" mid-day lunch. Our main meal is in the evening.

There is only one other TV program watched here during the day, Anne. My wife
is a "Countdown" enthusiast. I come up here to the computer so that I don't
have to watch it!
