Don't use it myself, but at some time I need to tackle the problem of
my Lotus Approach databases. As far as I know they are saved as DB2
tables, but if the worst comes to the worst I can probably export
them as .csv files. I would guess that most things can import from
there.

I'd love to get on with this, but there always seems to be more
pressing needs, so I read them from win4lin when I need them.

Export all the tables to DB4 then import to the Linux database of your choice.
Unfortunately queries are not SQL compliant.

these
3 modems = 1 U.S. Robotics 56k Fax modem. 2 = older modems

To fix that, go to Configuration --> Common Preferences --> Interface,
and select "Always Open Message in Summary when Selected". I'm not using
gtk2 sylpheed right now (I usually do, I'm on another comp), so I'm not
sure if that's exactly where it is or whether it works. Word wrapping
works MUCH better on the gtk1.2 version of claws, but I'm sure this will
improve.

It will install the newest kernel packaged by Mandrakesoft, which is
2.4.22-25mdk. You can always do your own kernel after install.

10.0 will have 2.6.3 in it as default and 2.4.25 for those that still want to

With XP, I had to install manufacturer printer drivers for my printers
to get all their features. My external USB floppy disk drive nearly
drove me nuts trying to get XP to do the installation. I finally
had to go through the CD and run each installation file manually
to get the FDD to install on XP. And so on. I have a long list of
things that needed additional drivers and stuff to work as they were
expected to work under XP.

>With Red Hat and Mandrake I have Problems with.

I do not recommend Red Hat for folks new to Linux. IMO, the tools are
inadequate for a person who really doesn't understand how Linux works.
Mandrake, SuSE and Knoppix have user-friendly applications which will
walk new users through most areas needed to get their Linux systems
working satisfactorily.

Check your Mandrake CDs for rute (Rute Users Tutorial and Exposition).
It was on my PowerPack CDs on the Commercial CD. You can also Google
for rute to download it, or get it from Amazon.com (it's a big book
and not cheap).

This book really is comprehensive, and one of the more current.
Current kernels do a number of things differently than earlier
2.4x kernels do. A lot of Linux bibles are sadly out of date when trying
to work with systems with the recent kernels.

>wine

You need to break down your questions into separate posts to get help.
Not everyone reads all the threads. So there may be people who have
no interest in wine and aren't reading this, who could help you with
your CD burners, for example.

Don't reply to a message on this thread, however, to start a new thread.
The archives and e-mail handlers that many people use will thread a
message according to message IDs in the headers. That will defeat the
purpose of starting a new thread and getting people to see and answer
your questions.

>2 CD burners = 1 locks up the system the other would not read.
>3 cdroms = where not detected I could not find any linux info for
>these

I have a combined CD burner/DVD player. It was detected and set up
correctly at installation. I have never had problems burning CDs (using
K3b) and viewing commercial films (using Ogle).

>3 modems = 1 U.S. Robotics 56k Fax modem. 2 = older modems

There is an internal Conexant winmodem on my portable which ML detected,
but I do not use. This portable has no serial or PCI ports, only USB,
ethernet, and wireless.

I have an external USB 56K fax modem (Zoom Telephonics). ML detected
and installed it correctly right away. However, I did have a problem
getting efax and KPPP to recognize it.

This was due to the fact that the newer kernels are using a different
file system naming convention than the older kernels are using
(devfsd vs devfs). So efax and KPPP looked for /dev/modem which was
not there. Instead the device was really /dev/usb/acm/0. However,
by setting up a symlink from the real device to /dev/modem, everything
worked as advertised.

This was not a Linux installation problem, but a problem of using a
correctly installed device with particular apps, the versions
of which did not recognize the new file system naming conventions.

>Zip Drive = will not read disks

Zip drives install as the fourth SCSI partition (this is something
determined by Iomega not Linux). ML detected and installed mine
correctly right away (it is external and plugs into the parallel
port).

Look in /dev and you should find symlinks @sda, @sdb, and so forth.
Make sure your /etc/fstab is using the correct /dev/sda4 or /dev/sdb4
or whatever for your actual Zip device.

Note that every single physical component, peripheral, and device on
a Linux system identified by that system is represented by an inode
in /dev -- an inode looks like a file and frequently is a file,
though not always.

It is a good idea when installing Linux systems to make certain
that every device you want available to you is connected and turned on
during installation (and bootup). Since I travel with my portable,
I ended up turning off harddrake so that it wasn't changing things
because of peripherals that weren't hooked up at bootup. Harddrake
can always be run when you need to make a change.

Yes, at the end of th installation process, you have an opportunity to
immediately connect to an update server and download all the available
updates for the packages you have installed.

It will be very easy to update to final from the current release candidate.
That's what those of us that run cooker do every day. You basically update
your urpmi sources and then simply

urpmi --auto-select

to upgrade all your packages to the latest. Kind of like the old Debian way
of 'apt-get dist-upgrade' or whatever it is.

> If I am wrong about this, I would be more than willing to install the
> 10.0rc1.

If you install the release candidate, just set up a cooker repository as a
urpmi source and then update every day or so until 10.0 becomes final, and
then change the source to the official 10.0 tree and do 'urpmi --auto-select'
one more time.

You should definitely update if you find some bugs, as they are being fixed
daily.

Ok, so if I go with a 9.2 install.. how can I make sure I get the

I only ask about 9.2 because 10.0rcX isn't stable, and from what I am
reading, it will not be possible to upgrade from the latest release
candidate to the first public version, will it?
If I am wrong about this, I would be more than willing to install the

Ah, I see. I've got all of my previous screensavers re-installed now. I'm
seeing the same thing you are (file names are not listed when selecting the
folder that contains the images you want to display). I remember this
happening on 9.2 also but, since they're displaying in the slide show, I
chose to ignore the fact. Perhaps the fact that I wanted to use all of the
images in the folder, and didn't need to select individual images made things
much simpler for me? All of my images are in a sub-sub folder under my home
directory.

Dang. Since I installed 10rc1, I'm down to two screensaver choices in the
configuration, too. I'll let you know if I get on top of the situation.

[newbie] Mandrake 9.2 crash problem

I had my Mandrake 9.2 box running with Evolution open, checking some e-mail

a Grub prompt and stops there. Is there anything I can do to get back into

I was under the impression that after the above I showed the screensavers
menu with permissions etc. The problem is that while I know how to add
images to 'slide show' and I created the images with 'gimp' and I believe
they are correctly permissioned. I cant get the listing when sitting in
directory /screensavers in the setup portion of 'slide show' IE the listing
is blank(empty, nonexistant, bare, not there). Maybe they should be in

Thanks for your reply Anne
When I installed MD 9.2 I set up the firewall with all default
setting as these should be good for now. I do not know at this time
how I can see exactly what it is doing. I might have to tweak later
when I network my other computers that are running Window 95 98 and
XP. I may dump Window 95 on my 2 old 486 laptop and install Linux
on them. I have an older desk top that I would like to run Linux
and use as a router so all of our computer can use the DSL internet
connection At this point it looks like our 2 newest computers used
by wife and step daughter will stay with Windos XP.

Then I would only need AV software on the one computer that will be

I ran Mandrake Update it only displayed programs that are on th 3
Mandrake CD I made from down loading Mandrake 9.2.
I Installed maybe 10 different apps. Problem after updating my menus
Wine and QCAD are the only two of these that installed an icon
short cut or menu item to start them. Now I don't know what other
where installed as I did not right down what I chose to have
install. I just assumed there would be some thing to click on to
run these apps. I ran software package removal there are over 600
items that can be removed!!!

I am thinking I have lot of stuff that should be removed then I
would get a lot better performace. But what can I remove with out
screwing things up. Two thing I found in this list is howto-utils
-0.2.13-2mdk and docbook-dtd412-xml-1.0-15mdk now these sound like
something I could use, but how do I start them. Why dont I have an
icon or menu short cut for them. I have updated my menus to show
all + what to do.

After starting the Software Media Manager i found that the
update_source was unchecked. I checked, it clicked the update
button and after 10 min. it said

Unable to update medium: it will be auto disabled
Errors
retrieve of source hdlist (or synthesis) failed no hdlist file found
for medium "update source" problem reading synthesis file medium
"update source"

So I clicked ok. Now when I run Mandrake Update I get this.

You already have at lease one update medium configured, but all of
them are currently disabled. You should run the Software Media
Manager to enable at lease one.

Then restart Mandrake Update

So now I am back where I started Can't update.

I have tried
# urpmi.update updates && urpmi --update --auto-select
trying to select nonexistent medium "updates"
the entry to update is missing
(one of Installation CD 1 (x86) (cdrom1), Installation CD 2 (x86)
(cdrom2), International CD (x86) (cdrom3), update_source,

I made a folder in my home directory called firefox and downloaded it

I then cd to that directory and ran this command (do not leave out the

gunzip -dc fir*.tar.gz | tar -xvf -

OK Here is what I have done... I'll see what happens...

Last night I rn memtest86 for 11 hours without a problem.

I then read a bunch of email from you great people that sent suggestions.

I changed these in LILO.conf but did not reboot.

I then ran the  BurnK7 for 10 minutes no problem
then ran burnBX -L for 10 minutes no problem.
Then ran MPRIME for 1 hour no problem.
Then I ran all three at the same time for a couple of hours and searched the web for the nvidia drivers. The instructions to load their latest drivers looked a little complex for this newbie so I have not done anything with that. Although I did find what I think is an RPM of the driver. Have to go back and read more.
I then came back to windows so I could reply to these emails and I'm going back to reboot and see if the additions to lilo made the difference.

More updates later

THANKS everyone.

Steve,

add noapic nolapic to your append line of your kernel. I have the same motherboard and have had major problems, I thought it was the sata drives I was using but it was adding acpi=off noapic nolapic that fixed it.

 Below is my original post I had posted back to the list that it was fixed but it is not and I don't have any idea where to go. I would really like to use Linux but if I can't keep it up (alright no one say it is a personal problem) IT DOESN'T DO ME MUCH GOOD.

What I have done was to add the   acpi=off  to the append line it was acpi=ht then I rebooted again after doing /sbin/lilo/. The machine then stayed up for over 18hrs but I only had the desktop open with no application running. I am going to try that again and see if it stays up. It's kind of hard to just let it sit there and not do anything. It seems like it might not be power management because it has locked up while I was using it and not just after setting doing nothing but last night at was after I left the room to eat dinner.

I have also checked all logs from Configure you machine/logs in MCC and there is absolutly nothing that would indicate a problem.

I also posted a ps -A and someone verified that there were no ACPI processes running.

Don't know where else to look.

Subject: PC locks up solid. Power off buton won't even work

Help please,

This is going to be a real challange. I have installed MD9,2 a couple of
weeks ago. Some of the people on this list have been very wonderfull in
helping me to overcome some very simple but perplexing problems for a newbie

This problem does not happen in windows. I can leave my machine up for days
with no problems.

Here's todays problem and it is a big one that if I can't fix I may have to
stop using LInux. Intermittently (almost every day) if I leave my pc sit
inactive for some period of time it will just lockup to where I can not even
power off the pc with the power button. I have to turn off at the surge
protector.

I have tried to isolate this to an application and have been unable to. The
only time it does not seem to happen is when I have no applications open on
my desktop. As long as the cursor is resting on the desktop not in an
application then the pc does not seem to lock up.

The only application that I have installed other than the defaut ones that
come with the 9.2 install is Thunderbird but I have also tried not running
Thunderbird after a boot to see what would happen and it still locks up. The
only applications I have really been using are. MCC functions for updates
and trying to make sure my hard

Here's a slightly different way to get the "running Mandrake..." blah blah:

 #bin bash
 echo "Edmonton,AB,Canada User #244963 at http://counter.li.org";
 echo `cat /etc/mandrake-release` kernel "`uname -r`"
 echo `uptime`
 echo "`/usr/games/fortune -s`"

The second line (cat /etc/mandrake-release kernel uname -r) generates the
second line below. The next line generates the uptime stamp, the last line
generates the last line(s) a.k.a.; the "short" (the -s flag) Fortune cookie.

I should add a tag to the end of that second line;

"On a 6 year old stone axe"

Regards;

You have to create it, and IIRC, it's called perms.local.

It very likely is msec that is changing the perms, you can configure custom
permissions in MCC under Security, or manage msec the old fashioned way by
editing the appropriate config files, as per:

If you use urpmi it usually goes to /usr/share. Some applications
from .tar.gz files go to /usr/local - I think that 'externa;'
programs are supposed to go there.

> Is the software automaticly available for all the users?

That depends on the permissions set. If you have installed by urpmi,
root will be the owner, so only root can change permissions. Do this
either from a root console, or by using su in a console then starting
konqueror. The best way is to leave the owner as root, but allocate
a group to it. Then just make sure that all users that need it are
in that group (see userdrake).

I tried building the 2.4.25 kernel, but I have one problem. I did
make dep and make clean etc. separately because make all wasn't
working. But, I can't find the bzImage. I did 'make bzImage' twice,
but It's not there. Any idea where it might be?
Marc
I don't know why you are trying to build a 2.4 kernel, unless there
is a specific reason for it, but you have to type:
make dep clean && make modules bzImage
then as root:
make modules_install
I highly suggest you try the 2.6 kernel first. As for your black
screen problem, change the line that says vga=788 to vga=normal.
Here is my entry for my 2.6 kernel (with vga=normal):
image=/boot/bzImage-2.6.1
  label="linux2.6.1"
  root=/dev/hdc5
  initrd=/boot/initrd-2.6.1.img
  append="devfs=nomount splash=silent noapic acpi=off
hdb=ide-cdrom hdd=ide-cdrom" read-only
  vga=normal
If that still doesn't work, I guess you could try following my
instructions from the beginning, skipping the parts about bootsplash.
But try vga=normal with your 2.6 kernel first.
John
Just wondering...What does the 'devfs=nomount' mean, because all of my
other lilo entries say 'devfs=mount'. Also, I was just trying the 2.4
kernel to see if it might work. In other words, I was in a hotel room
in Delaware and I was bored. =)
--Marc
Okay let's condense this into one thread now

Here's my lilo.conf:

boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
vga=normal
default="linux"
keytable=/boot/us.klt
prompt
nowarn
timeout=100
message=/boot/message
menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw
image=/boot/vmlinuz
  label="linux"
  root=/dev/hda5
  initrd=/boot/initrd.img
  append="devfs=mount splash=silent hdc=ide-scsi resume=/dev/hda6
splash=silent"
  vga=788
  read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz
  label="linux-nonfb"
  root=/dev/hda5
  initrd=/boot/initrd.img
  append="devfs=mount splash=silent hdc=ide-scsi resume=/dev/hda6"
  read-only
other=/dev/hda1
  label="windows"
  table=/dev/hda
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.22-10mdk
  label="old_linux-nonfb"
  root=/dev/hda5
  initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.22-10mdk.img
  append="devfs=mount hdc=ide-scsi resume=/dev/hda6"
  read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz
  label="failsafe"
  root=/dev/hda5
  initrd=/boot/initrd.img
  append="failsafe devfs=nomount splash=silent hdc=ide-scsi
resume=/dev/hda6"
  read-only
image=/boot/bzImage-2.6.3
  label="Linux-2.6.3"
  root=/dev/hda5
  initrd=/boot/initrd-2.6.3.img
  append="devfs=nomount hdb=ide-cdrom hdd=ide-cdrom"
  vga=normal
  read-only
And my fstab:

/dev/hda5 / ext3 noatime 1 1
none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0
/dev/hda7 /home ext3 noatime 1 2
none /mnt/cdrom supermount
dev=/dev/hdc,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0
/dev/hda1 /mnt/windows ntfs iocharset=iso8859-1,umask=0,ro 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/hda6 swap swap defaults 0 0
And I just noticed, something odd is happening with my cdrom drive. I
just tried to install a package, with CD 2, and it didn't eject my cdrom
drive like it usually does, then it didn't detect the cd. It also said
insert the disk into /dev/hdc... But the device is /dev/scd0. This
probably has something to do with the cdrom device config during boot
that I mentioned in the other thread.
--Marc
What kernel are you running? If its the 2.6 kernel, then change the
cdrom line in your fstab file to:
/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto defaults,ro,user,noexec,noauto 0 0
The only problem with this is that supermount no longer works. To get
supermount to work, you'd have to patch the kernel with the supermount
patch and then recompile. The above line will not mount your cdrom, and
you have to do it manually with this command: 'mount /dev/hdc'.
Did the vga=normal thing fix your boot problem?

John
If you mean what kernel am I trying to run, then yes it's 2.6. Would
there be any way to have it mount automatically on boot? You know, make a
script and have it execute when I start up.
The vga=normal fixed the blank screen, but read my other reply to see the
new problem.
Also, any thoughts about what happened with my cdrom drive and device
scd0?
Ya, to have your cd mount on boot (you would have to unmount it if you
want to switch cd's then remount), just remove "noauto" from the cdrom
line of you fstab.
When the 2.6 kernel gets up and running, the cdrom drive and device scd0
will go away. It's complaining because your cdrom is currently scd0, but
fstab says its hdc. With the 2.6 kernel, the device wil

I tried building the 2.4.25 kernel, but I have one problem. I did
make dep and make clean etc. separately because make all wasn't
working. But, I can't find the bzImage. I did 'make bzImage' twice,
but It's not there. Any idea where it might be?
Marc
I don't know why you are trying to build a 2.4 kernel, unless there
is a specific reason for it, but you have to type:
make dep clean && make modules bzImage
then as root:
make modules_install
I highly suggest you try the 2.6 kernel first. As for your black
screen problem, change the line that says vga=788 to vga=normal.
Here is my entry for my 2.6 kernel (with vga=normal):
image=/boot/bzImage-2.6.1
   label="linux2.6.1"
   root=/dev/hdc5
   initrd=/boot/initrd-2.6.1.img
   append="devfs=nomount splash=silent noapic acpi=off
hdb=ide-cdrom hdd=ide-cdrom" read-only
   vga=normal

Here's my lilo.conf:

boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
vga=normal
default="linux"
keytable=/boot/us.klt
prompt
nowarn
timeout=100
message=/boot/message
menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw
image=/boot/vmlinuz
   label="linux"
   root=/dev/hda5
   initrd=/boot/initrd.img
   append="devfs=mount splash=silent hdc=ide-scsi resume=/dev/hda6
splash=silent"
   vga=788
   read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz
   label="linux-nonfb"
   root=/dev/hda5
   initrd=/boot/initrd.img
   append="devfs=mount splash=silent hdc=ide-scsi resume=/dev/hda6"
   read-only
other=/dev/hda1
   label="windows"
   table=/dev/hda
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.22-10mdk
   label="old_linux-nonfb"
   root=/dev/hda5
   initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.22-10mdk.img
   append="devfs=mount hdc=ide-scsi resume=/dev/hda6"
   read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz
   label="failsafe"
   root=/dev/hda5
   initrd=/boot/initrd.img
   append="failsafe devfs=nomount splash=silent hdc=ide-scsi
resume=/dev/hda6"
   read-only
image=/boot/bzImage-2.6.3
   label="Linux-2.6.3"
   root=/dev/hda5
   initrd=/boot/initrd-2.6.3.img
   append="devfs=nomount hdb=ide-cdrom hdd=ide-cdrom"
   vga=normal
   read-only
And my fstab:

/dev/hda5 / ext3 noatime 1 1
none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0
/dev/hda7 /home ext3 noatime 1 2
none /mnt/cdrom supermount
dev=/dev/hdc,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0

Would there be
any way to have it mount automatically on boot? You know, make a script and
have it execute when I start up.

The vga=normal fixed the blank screen, but read my other reply to see the new
problem.

Also, any thoughts about what happened with my cdrom drive and device scd0?

Ya, to have your cd mount on boot (you would have to unmount it if you
want to switch cd's then remount), just remove "noauto" from the cdrom
line of you fstab.

When the 2.6 kernel gets up and running, the cdrom drive and device scd0
will go away. It's complaining because your cdrom is currently scd0, but
fstab says its hdc. With the 2.6 kernel, the device will be hdc and
rpmdrake will work fi

in a terminal as root:

mkinitrd /boot/initrd-linux-2.6.3.img 2.6.3

then run lilo and reboot into a new kernel. You will have a few problems

Both of you are right, of course but then so am I

In mdk9.2 you can still use "rpm --rebuild blabla.src.rpm".
If that's due to aliases or configuration of /etc/popt is up to you to look
up;)

In the mean time I'm sure lanman built his rpm.

Good luck,

[newbie] NVIDIA and Sound on 10rc1

2004-02-21 Thread Adolfo Bello
I just installed 10rc1 from scratch and updated this morning with cooker
sources. Using kernel 2.6.3.

Everything works beautifully but I have a problem between NVIDIA and
sound, no matter whether I use the open or close source driver.

When KDE starts it gives a couple of message boxes. The first one says:

"During the previous startup, KNotify crashed while instantiating
KNotify. Do you want to try again or disable aRts sound output?"

The second one:
"The application KNotify (knotify)crashed and caused the signal 11
(SIGSEGV)."

After restarting X with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace sound is back working fine.

Is there any place that I can take a look at? No funny messages out of
dmesg. Everything OK.

Toshiba laptop with ACPI turned on working real nice out of the box for
the first time. I love this version!!

There are some issues, but it works pretty well. But you might want to
get the RC1 iso's using bittorrent or ftp, then install from those. RC2

That I tried and I'm going to have to look at it again later after work,

Well the Kernel begins to boot fine. Then I get a Kernel Panic Error, telling

it would work, and my new Initrd= line in lilo.conf is

What kernel are you running? If its the 2.6 kernel, then change the
cdrom line in your fstab file to:
/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto defaults,ro,user,noexec,noauto 0 0

The only problem with this is that supermount no longer works. To get
supermount to work, you'd have to patch the kernel with the supermount
patch and then recompile. The above line will not mount your cdrom, and
you have to do it manually with this command: 'mount /dev/hdc'.

Did the vga=normal thing fix your boot problem?

Would I be correct in assuming then, that I can't mix my Walmart Sweat Pants,

Well! back to walmart to get a new "Gucci" wardrobe! Sigh!

Go into a Konsole, type su and your password to enter root.

Then type: update-menus -v, and your menus should be back when it's done.

Well, another thing to try is to increase the size of the font. On default, it's at 9
point which is incredibly tiny. Consequently, when composing a new message, the
composer thinks I have 110+ character lines when I want 68 or 70 character ones. In 14
point it is readable and it's wrapping at about column 70, according to the ruler.

I think the comment I made about wrapping in my previous point should be taken with a
grain of salt, if the composer assomes the wrapping point is at the right edge of the
composer window it's a moot point anyway, but there doesn't seem to be a configuration
setting (or I haven't found it) that tells the composer not to go past column 72, for
instance.

On deletion of a message - it seems to have taken a long time for the first message.
Maybe it had to do reindexing or some such. Subsequent deletes seem as fast as vanilla
sylpheed, but it doesn't seem to just display the next message unless you click with
the mouse.

Apparently, not much. I just installed the RPM in question from orderinchaos.

1) why it installs in /usr/local is anyone's guess. I don't think Sylpheed &
Sylpheed-Claws can coexist, and maybe that's why it's put there instead.

2) uses the existing stuff in .sylpheed, so no need to fiddle with such things as
creating a new account and a place to store the mail, etc.

3) The fonts are *tiny*. But that's configurable.

4) Deleting a mail takes a *very* long time in claws compared to vanilla sylpheed. My
mailbox has about ~6k messages.

5) claws thinks all my mail is "new".

6) wrapping lines does not work. Consequently, this post may look wierd to you.

7) a lot more noise on the controlling terminal than in vanilla sylpheed. I'm getting
a ton of assertion failed messages here.

It just tells the kernel not to use the device filesystem. If your other
entries all have devfs=mount and everything worked properly before, you
can change it to devfs=mount. FYI, however, the 2.6 kernel is beginning
to phase out the device filesystem in favor for the sysfs. To get that
working, just do this as root: 'mkdir /sys'. Then reboot into the 2.6
kernel. You can go ahead and change it to devfs=mount. Just don't forget
to run lilo when your finished.

Open a terminal and type 'gnome-control-center'
If it isn't there, then install it as root with 'urpmi gnome-control-center'

Now, click on Advanced on the left side of the screen. Then double click
on preferred applications. The first window should be about web
browsers. Change it to Custom, then type in, 'mozilla-firefox %s'.

If you want improved mozilla-launching, I have attached an executable. Save
the file to a temporary directory, open a terminal, become root, and
copy the file into /usr/bin. Then run this command: 'chmod 0755
/usr/bin/launch_firefox'. When you are done with that, you can go back
to the preferred applications window and change mozilla-firefox to
launch_firefox. It will now open a new window if no running firefox
process was found, and open a new tab if there is a firefox window
already open.

It will now open mozilla firefox from your mail client.

Okay let's condense this into one thread now

Here's my lilo.conf:

boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
vga=normal
default="linux"
keytable=/boot/us.klt
prompt
nowarn
timeout=100
message=/boot/message
menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label="linux"
root=/dev/hda5
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append="devfs=mount splash=silent hdc=ide-scsi resume=/dev/hda6
splash=silent"
vga=788
read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label="linux-nonfb"
root=/dev/hda5
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append="devfs=mount splash=silent hdc=ide-scsi resume=/dev/hda6"
read-only
other=/dev/hda1
label="windows"
table=/dev/hda
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.22-10mdk
label="old_linux-nonfb"
root=/dev/hda5
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.22-10mdk.img
append="devfs=mount hdc=ide-scsi resume=/dev/hda6"
read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label="failsafe"
root=/dev/hda5
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append="failsafe devfs=nomount splash=silent hdc=ide-scsi
resume=/dev/hda6"
read-only
image=/boot/bzImage-2.6.3
label="Linux-2.6.3"
root=/dev/hda5
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.6.3.img
append="devfs=nomount hdb=ide-cdrom hdd=ide-cdrom"
vga=normal
read-only

And my fstab:

/dev/hda5 / ext3 noatime 1 1
none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0
/dev/hda7 /home ext3 noatime 1 2
none /mnt/cdrom supermount
dev=/dev/hdc,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0
/dev/hda1 /mnt/windows ntfs iocharset=iso8859-1,umask=0,ro 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/hda6 swap swap defaults 0 0

And I just noticed, something odd is happening with my cdrom drive. I just
tried to install a package, with CD 2, and it didn't eject my cdrom drive
like it usually does, then it didn't detect the cd. It also said insert the
disk into /dev/hdc... But the device is /dev/scd0. This probably has
something to do with the cdrom device config during boot that I mentioned in
the other thread.

Just wondering...What does the 'devfs=nomount' mean, because all of my other
lilo entries say 'devfs=mount'. Also, I was just trying the 2.4 kernel to see
if it might work. In other words, I was in a hotel room in Delaware and I was

Oh wow, I didn't know you started a new thread for this. I responded to
the first thread already. Follow the suggestions in there to try and
boot the 2.6.3 kernel. Change it to vga=normal, run lilo, and reboot.
That will work, I'm sure of it. As long as you made an initrd for your
kernel in the proper way.

Like John R.S. said, post your lilo.conf and fstab here and we'll try to
step you through booting the 2.6 kernel (it's much better than the 2.4
kernels)

As for your 2.4.25 problem, just install the mandrake rpm for it. Update
your urpmi update source and 'urpmi kernel-2.4.25'

We'll get you through this,

John

I don't know why you are trying to build a 2.4 kernel, unless there is a
specific reason for it, but you have to type:
make dep clean && make modules bzImage

then as root:
make modules_install

I highly suggest you try the 2.6 kernel first. As for your black screen
problem, change the line that says vga=788 to vga=normal.

Here is my entry for my 2.6 kernel (with vga=normal):
image=/boot/bzImage-2.6.1
label="linux2.6.1"
root=/dev/hdc5
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.6.1.img
append="devfs=nomount splash=silent noapic acpi=off hdb=ide-cdrom
hdd=ide-cdrom"
read-only
vga=normal

If that still doesn't work, I guess you could try following my

Nope, no IMAP here, and yes, it's set for incoming. I'm wondering if I
don't have something wrong in some config file somewhere. I ran
spamassassin from a command line followed by a CTRL-D to send it an EOF,
so I'm /assuming/ it, itself, is running properly.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] chuck]$ spamassassin
X-Spam-Status: No, hits=2.9 required=5.0
tests=DATE_MISSING,FROM_NO_LOWER
autolearn=no version=2.63
X-Spam-Level: **
X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.63 (2004-01-11) on   localhost

[EMAIL PROTECTED] chuck]$

But I simply see no evidence in any incoming mail that it has actually
reached spamassassin and has been processed.

Oh, well ... work calls, so I have to put this aside for now. I'll be
back with more frustration later, I'm sure. Thanks, guys.

When you defined the filter, the first pop up asked what did you want to apply the
filter to. If you select 'incoming', then the filter will be applied on all incoming
mail.

Then the filter itself will 'pipe' all mails through spamassassin. SpamAssassin will
add lines in the header which will look something like this for a 'non spam' mail

X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.63 (2004-01-11) on
jennings.homelinux.net
X-Spam-Level:
X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-4.2 required=5.0 tests=AWL,BAYES_00,RCVD_IN_LEVEL3,
RCVD_IN_SORBS autolearn=no version=2.63

This tells you which tests the mail triggered in Spamassassin and the final score. A
'spam' mail will have the mail body replaced with text describing what is wrong with
the mail. The original spam mail will become an attachment.

Calling spamassassin with the -e parameter will cause spamassassin to exit with a
return code of '1' whan a mail is spam.
The evolution filter is set up to move any mail where spamassassin returns 'non zero'
to the spam folder.

BTW: This will not work if your Evolution is set up to read mail from IMAP folders,
for the simple reason that with IMAP the mail stays on the remote host. To use
SpamAssassin with IMAP you should be looking at putting it on the remote mail server.

Yes, as you can see, it does. I am running spamassassin from Postfix and
procmail, so no help I'm afraid. Of course if the output of
spamassassin is ignored and the filter only checks the return status of
spamassassin it is never going to be able to add any headers. That may
be what you are seeing.

If you think this is hard you should try adding spamassassin to an
Exchange/Outlook setup as a user. I managed it, but it was very
complex.

You probably downloaded the tar-file into your temp-directory. Tarring
-x there will create a firefox subdirectory in temp.

If you have decided where you want the installation to go, cd to there

for instance cd /usr/local/

and then do a tar -xvfz ~/temp/firefox...

Note: to install in /usr/local/, you should be root, so use the 'su'
command first.

Afterwards you can remove the firefox directory from your temp-dir.

You appear to be using ide-scsi emulation so you will have two steps to take.
The first would be to remap fstab for the new mount points. hdd would change
to hdc.

The next would be to change the lilo options line from "hdc=ide-scsi" to
"hdd=ide-scsi"

Quick scenario: Edit fstab for the changes, Edit lilo.conf, Issue Lilo
command to write the changes to disk. Shutdown computer. Move the cables
physically setting the jumpers correctly, turn the computer back on and you
should be in business.

I just did something similar myself and it went through without a hitch.

Do these files begin with . (a dot)? If yes these files are hidden

When you say 'connect to the LAN', do you mean simply accessing Windows shares?
Or are you not able to use the school LAN to get out to the Web and such?

Make sure you have samba and LinNeighborhood installed:

urpmi samba-client LinNeighborhood

then fire up LinNeighborhood (should be in your menu now, if it wasn't already
installed) and mount any Windows shares you wish to access.

As far as connecting to the LAN in general, there should be a DHCP server
somewhere on the LAN handing out addresses, no? If so, you just need to
configure your Mandrake box to accept address and gateway configs from the DHCP
server. Go to Networking and Internet in MCC, choose DrakConnect, click
'configure Local Area Network' and choose DHCP for the boot protocol.

Do a 'service network restart' as root, and you should be connected.

  It's on you if your home directory is readable or not ...

  Remember that all files with '.' at the beginning (like .emacs,
.gnus, ...) are configuration files. I don't know what kind of file

your directory will be much more readable for you.

  AFAIK there is no way how to tell TB that your signature file is

Can anyone recommend a good guide to rpmbuild (along the lines of the
old Mandrake RPM HOWTO)? In particular I need information on building
RPMs from source tarballs.
http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/twiki/bin/view/Main/RpmHowTo
That's the guide I mentioned, which uses the old rpm command rather than
rpmbuild.

Isn't rpmbuild just a wrapper script for rpm anyway?
As far as I know, yes. I only ever made one RPM with the old rpm, and it
was a major PITA (by the time I'd done it all, someone else had uploaded
an RPM, so my efforts were wasted except as a learning experience).
rpmbuild makes it a lot easier.

"rpm --rebuild x.src.rpm" should do that.

Good luck,

[newbie] Moving disk from slave to master

2004-02-21 Thread Søren Neigaard
I have a hd and a cd-w on the same cable, and i have accidently placed
the jumbers so that the cd-w is master and the hd is slave, even though
according to cable-select it should be the other way around.

I have been experiencing some instability when copying/moving large data
to/from this hd, and I was wondering if it would help if I changed the
disk to be master and the cd-w to be slave?

So how do I do this while preserving its mount points and without too
much trouble?

Heres my fstab:

/dev/hda2 / xfs defaults 1 1
/dev/hda1 /boot ext2 defaults 1 2
none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0
/dev/hda6 /home xfs defaults 1 2
/dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom iso9660 user,exec,dev,suid,ro,noauto 1 1
/dev/hdd5 /mnt/diverse xfs defaults 1 2
none /mnt/floppy supermount
dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,iocharset=iso8859-1,uma
sk=0,sync,codepage=850 0 0
/dev/hdd1 /mnt/mydata xfs defaults 1 2
/dev/hdb1 /mnt/windows ntfs user,exec,dev,suid,rw 1 1
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/hda8 /usr xfs defaults 1 2
/dev/hda5 /var xfs defaults 1 2
/dev/hda7 swap swap defaults 0 0

The disks i want to move is:

/dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom iso9660 user,exec,dev,suid,ro,noauto 1 1
-
/dev/hdd5 /mnt/diverse xfs defaults 1 2
/dev/hdd1 /mnt/mydata xfs defaults 1 2

I haven't had to do it in such a long time, that I can't remember all the
steps. The src rpm is for Mandrake Cooker.

Ray, if your software runs on win98 or Me and you have a licensed
windows disc it will run on Win4Lin, almost certainly (they give a
money back guarantee, I believe, so check the website at
netraverse.com). Basically you install windows under linux. It
looks identical to the windows you are used to, and so do your
applications, but it uses the linux drivers. It's also far more
stable than traditional windows installs. It's not free, but it's
not expensive, and they have superb free support.
