As far as I know they are saved as DB2 tables, but if the worst comes to the worst I can probably export them as .csv files. I would guess that most things can import from there. I'd love to get on with this, but there always seems to be more pressing needs, so I read them from win4lin when I need them. Not everyone reads all the threads. So there may be people who have no interest in wine and aren't reading this, who could help you with your CD burners, for example. Don't reply to a message on this thread, however, to start a new thread. The archives and e-mail handlers that many people use will thread a message according to message IDs in the headers. That will defeat the purpose of starting a new thread and getting people to see and answer your questions. >2 CD burners = 1 locks up the system the other would not read. >3 cdroms = where not detected I could not find any linux info for >these I have a combined CD burner/DVD player. It was detected and set up correctly at installation. This portable has no serial or PCI ports, only USB, ethernet, and wireless. I have an external USB 56K fax modem (Zoom Telephonics). ML detected and installed it correctly right away. However, I did have a problem getting efax and KPPP to recognize it. This was due to the fact that the newer kernels are using a different file system naming convention than the older kernels are using (devfsd vs devfs). So efax and KPPP looked for /dev/modem which was not there. Instead the device was really /dev/usb/acm/0. However, by setting up a symlink from the real device to /dev/modem, everything worked as advertised. This was not a Linux installation problem, but a problem of using a correctly installed device with particular apps, the versions of which did not recognize the new file system naming conventions. >Zip Drive = will not read disks Zip drives install as the fourth SCSI partition (this is something determined by Iomega not Linux). ML detected and installed mine correctly right away (it is external and plugs into the parallel port). Look in /dev and you should find symlinks @sda, @sdb, and so forth. Make sure your /etc/fstab is using the correct /dev/sda4 or /dev/sdb4 or whatever for your actual Zip device. Note that every single physical component, peripheral, and device on a Linux system identified by that system is represented by an inode in /dev -- an inode looks like a file and frequently is a file, though not always. It is a good idea when installing Linux systems to make certain that every device you want available to you is connected and turned on during installation (and bootup). Since I travel with my portable, I ended up turning off harddrake so that it wasn't changing things because of peripherals that weren't hooked up at bootup. Harddrake can always be run when you need to make a change. >USB Flash Card reader = Some times mounts to /mnt/removable >sometimes to /mnt/memory_card >USB External Hard Drive = Some times mounts to /mnt/removable >sometimes to /mnt/memory_card USB protocols for storage media are also very similar to SCSI p

It will be very easy to update to final from the current release candidate. That's what those of us that run cooker do every day. You basically update your urpmi sources and then simply urpmi --auto-select to upgrade all your packages to the latest. Kind of like the old Debian way of 'apt-get dist-upgrade' or whatever it is. > If I am wrong about this, I would be more than willing to install the > 10.0rc1. If you install the release candidate, just set up a cooker repository as a urpmi source and then update every day or so until 10.0 becomes final, and then change the source to the official 10.0 tree and do 'urpmi --auto-select' one more time. You should definitely update if you find some bugs, as they are being fixed daily. -- /g Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

I only ask about 9.2 because 10.0rcX isn't stable, and from what I am reading, it will not be possible to upgrade from the latest release candidate to the first public version, will it? I cant get the listing when sitting in directory /screensavers in the setup portion of 'slide show' IE the listing is blank(empty, nonexistant, bare, not there). Thanks for your reply Anne When I installed MD 9.2 I set up the firewall with all default setting as these should be good for now. I do not know at this time how I can see exactly what it is doing. I might have to tweak later when I network my other computers that are running Window 95 98 and XP. I may dump Window 95 on my 2 old 486 laptop and install Linux on them. I ran Mandrake Update it only displayed programs that are on th 3 Mandrake CD I made from down loading Mandrake 9.2. I Installed maybe 10 different apps. Problem after updating my menus Wine and QCAD are the only two of these that installed an icon short cut or menu item to start them. Now I don't know what other where installed as I did not right down what I chose to have install. I just assumed there would be some thing to click on to run these apps. I ran software package removal there are over 600 items that can be removed!!! I am thinking I have lot of stuff that should be removed then I would get a lot better performace. But what can I remove with out screwing things up. Two thing I found in this list is howto-utils -0.2.13-2mdk and docbook-dtd412-xml-1.0-15mdk now these sound like something I could use, but how do I start them. Why dont I have an icon or menu short cut for them. I have updated my menus to show all + what to do. After starting the Software Media Manager i found that the update_source was unchecked. I checked, it clicked the update button and after 10 min. it said Unable to update medium: it will be auto disabled Errors retrieve of source hdlist (or synthesis) failed no hdlist file found for medium "update source" problem reading synthesis file medium "update source" So I clicked ok. Now when I run Mandrake Update I get this. You already have at lease one update medium configured, but all of them are currently disabled. You should run the Software Media Manager to enable at lease one. Then restart Mandrake Update So now I am back where I started Can't update. I have tried # urpmi.update updates && urpmi --update --auto-select trying to select nonexistent medium "updates" the entry to update is missing (one of Installation CD 1 (x86) (cdrom1), Installation CD 2 (x86) (cdrom2), International CD (x86) (cdrom3), update_source, Mandrak-Wine) > > > But do I want to pay > > for one year of service for something that does not do what I > > was led to believe it would do. RE: [newbie] PC locks up solid. FIXED MAYBE ????
THANKS TONY for the following suggestion: add noapic nolapic to your append line of your kernel. I have the same motherboard and have had major problems, I thought it was the sata drives I was using but it was adding acpi=off noapic nolapic that fixed it. THANKS Everyone. This was making me crazy. I was up for 24 hours. I had to come back to windows to get some work done and reply to this email as I have the windows side deleting the emails from the server. The whole driver updates looked a little scary for now. May come back to you all when I get ready to do that. Which I will. One small step for LINUX at a time. NOT FIXED HELP PLEASE can't survive in LINUX this way OK Here is what I have done... I'll see what happens... Last night I rn memtest86 for 11 hours without a problem. I then read a bunch of email from you great people that sent suggestions. I changed these in LILO.conf but did not reboot. I then ran the BurnK7 for 10 minutes no problem then ran burnBX -L for 10 minutes no problem. Then ran MPRIME for 1 hour no problem. Then I ran all three at the same time for a couple of hours and searched the web for the nvidia drivers. The instructions to load their latest drivers looked a little complex for this newbie so I have not done anything with that. Although I did find what I think is an RPM of the driver. Have to go back and read more. I then came back to windows so I could reply to these emails and I'm going back to reboot and see if the additions to lilo made the difference. More updates later THANKS everyone. I would really like to use Linux but if I can't keep it up (alright no one say it is a personal problem) IT DOESN'T DO ME MUCH GOOD. What I have done was to add the acpi=off to the append line it was acpi=ht then I rebooted again after doing /sbin/lilo/. The machine then stayed up for over 18hrs but I only had the desktop open with no application running. I am going to try that again and see if it stays up. It's kind of hard to just let it sit there and not do anything. It seems like it might not be power management because it has locked up while I was using it and not just after setting doing nothing but last night at was after I left the room to eat dinner. I have also checked all logs from Configure you machine/logs in MCC and there is absolutly nothing that would indicate a problem. I also posted a ps -A and someone verified that there were no ACPI processes running. Don't know where else to look. That depends on the permissions set. If you have installed by urpmi, root will be the owner, so only root can change permissions. Do this either from a root console, or by using su in a console then starting konqueror. The best way is to leave the owner as root, but allocate a group to it. [newbie] NVIDIA and Sound on 10rc1
I just installed 10rc1 from scratch and updated this morning with cooker sources. Using kernel 2.6.3. Everything works beautifully but I have a problem between NVIDIA and sound, no matter whether I use the open or close source driver. When KDE starts it gives a couple of message boxes. The first one says: "During the previous startup, KNotify crashed while instantiating KNotify. Do you want to try again or disable aRts sound output?" The second one: "The application KNotify (knotify)crashed and caused the signal 11 (SIGSEGV)." After restarting X with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace sound is back working fine. Is there any place that I can take a look at? No funny messages out of dmesg. Everything OK. Toshiba laptop with ACPI turned on working real nice out of the box for the first time. I love this version!! Adolfo Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

To get supermount to work, you'd have to patch the kernel with the supermount patch and then recompile. On default, it's at 9 point which is incredibly tiny. Consequently, when composing a new message, the composer thinks I have 110+ character lines when I want 68 or 70 character ones. In 14 point it is readable and it's wrapping at about column 70, according to the ruler. I think the comment I made about wrapping in my previous point should be taken with a grain of salt, if the composer assomes the wrapping point is at the right edge of the composer window it's a moot point anyway, but there doesn't seem to be a configuration setting (or I haven't found it) that tells the composer not to go past column 72, for instance. On deletion of a message - it seems to have taken a long time for the first message. Maybe it had to do reindexing or some such. Subsequent deletes seem as fast as vanilla sylpheed, but it doesn't seem to just display the next message unless you click with the mouse. -- David E. [EMAIL PROTECTED] ... Mahnomen, MN > Registered Linux User #346519 > > > When you defined the filter, the first pop up asked what did you want to apply the filter to. If you select 'incoming', then the filter will be applied on all incoming mail. Then the filter itself will 'pipe' all mails through spamassassin. SpamAssassin will add lines in the header which will look something like this for a 'non spam' mail X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.63 (2004-01-11) on jennings.homelinux.net X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-4.2 required=5.0 tests=AWL,BAYES_00,RCVD_IN_LEVEL3, RCVD_IN_SORBS autolearn=no version=2.63 This tells you which tests the mail triggered in Spamassassin and the final score. A 'spam' mail will have the mail body replaced with text describing what is wrong with the mail. The original spam mail will become an attachment. Calling spamassassin with the -e parameter will cause spamassassin to exit with a return code of '1' whan a mail is spam. The evolution filter is set up to move any mail where spamassassin returns 'non zero' to the spam folder. BTW: This will not work if your Evolution is set up to read mail from IMAP folders, for the simple reason that with IMAP the mail stays on the remote host. To use SpamAssassin with IMAP you should be looking at putting it on the remote mail server. derek Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Yes, as you can see, it does. I am running spamassassin from Postfix and procmail, so no help I'm afraid. Of course if the output of spamassassin is ignored and the filter only checks the return status of spamassassin it is never going to be able to add any headers. That may be what you are seeing. If you think this is hard you should try adding spamassassin to an Exchange/Outlook setup as a user. The first would be to remap fstab for the new mount points. hdd would change to hdc. When you say 'connect to the LAN', do you mean simply accessing Windows shares? Or are you not able to use the school LAN to get out to the Web and such? Make sure you have samba and LinNeighborhood installed: urpmi samba-client LinNeighborhood then fire up LinNeighborhood (should be in your menu now, if it wasn't already installed) and mount any Windows shares you wish to access. As far as connecting to the LAN in general, there should be a DHCP server somewhere on the LAN handing out addresses, no? If so, you just need to configure your Mandrake box to accept address and gateway configs from the DHCP server. Go to Networking and Internet in MCC, choose DrakConnect, click 'configure Local Area Network' and choose DHCP for the boot protocol. Do a 'service network restart' as root, and you should be connected. -- JoeHill Registered Linux user #282046 Homepage: www.orderinchaos.org +++ 11:03:30 up 15 days, 22:49, 5 users, load average: 0.06, 0.06, 0.10 +++ Linux 2.4.22-21mdk i686 +++ "And so if people are violating the law by doing drugs, they ought to be accused and they ought to be convicted and they ought to be sent up."-- Rush Limbaugh, drug abuser Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? FYI, there's an RPM at the site Derek mentioned in his response to me earlier ... http://www.eslrahc.com/9.2/ I installed from .rpm the other day (from another site), with no problem. I do, however, have an annoyance with it, in that I cannot seem to make it the default browser when clicking on links in email. Otherwise, it's working great. As to how to fix/move the install you've got, sorry, as you can see by my other posts here I'm /way/ too new at all this to not give you a bum steer (or gnu). :) -- Chuck Mattsen ... It's on you if your home directory is readable or not ... Remember that all files with '.' at the beginning (like .emacs, .gnus, ...) are configuration files. I don't know what kind of file manager are you using, but you can hide these configuration files and your directory will be much more readable for you. Re: [newbie] adding a second monitor - xinerama (almost there)

I suspect however that there is nice, easy Mandrake gui method. If so, can anyone point me at it? I have added a second video card and attached a monitor to it. Mandrake sees both cards, but if I run XFdrake and tell it to test, it just tests the active one without noticing which card I've chosen. So I guess that's just talking to the X server and the X server hasn't noticed the second card. I'll start hacking at XFconfig86-4 if that's what's required, but if there's a tool that does it right... OK, decided to give it a go and followed the howto. Now both monitors are working, but xinerama isn't - the second monitor just repeats the image of the first and the mouse doesn't go there. I clicked on the enable xinerama button in KDE configuration and restarted X, but still no go. I have attached my XF86Config-4 file. I only ever made one RPM with the old rpm, and it was a major PITA (by the time I'd done it all, someone else had uploaded an RPM, so my efforts were wasted except as a learning experience). rpmbuild makes it a lot easier. [newbie] Moving disk from slave to master
I have a hd and a cd-w on the same cable, and i have accidently placed the jumbers so that the cd-w is master and the hd is slave, even though according to cable-select it should be the other way around. I have been experiencing some instability when copying/moving large data to/from this hd, and I was wondering if it would help if I changed the disk to be master and the cd-w to be slave?
