With regard to shorewall I've just forwarded the ports that I've been advised
to. I also don't have a hardware router as too many of the cheap ones cause
all kinds of grief and most of them can't be configured worth a damn anyway.

I'm using the shadow client and it's showing them to me in the GUI. I've also
opened myself up to unlimited connections.

For the record, for anyone following this thread, I'm not at between 55 and 86
kB/s which isn't bad, I guess. It should finish sometime tomorrow at this
rate :)

Still seeing very few clients and peers but that could be just a regional
thing and the clients and peers that respond in a given amount of time. I
haven't looked into it any yet.

Also the packet error rate is way down now. I've seen one peer disappear and
I'm not downloading from them now. I'll wait till they reappear and if the
bit error rate goes through the ceiling again I'll block them at Shorewall.
They were always kinda suspect anyway. I wonder if they've got a fscked hard
drive? Oh well :)

Going well now, I guess, though waiting 4.5 hours to get decent throughput is
a bit much. Still, better than nothing. :)

Mine has been open for 56 hours and I have got 700M so far. Even with
the upload throttled right back I am getting an average of about
8Kb/s on a 512M broadband connection. Before when I was downloading ISOs
FTP from Mandrake I used to get about 60Kb/s and could download 4 ISOs
in at most about 24hours or so.

OK, I have a Bittorent client up and running but running so slowly that
I'll be a very old man and we'll be on Mdk 12 or 13 by the time this
download completes.
The FAQ on the club site sucks and there is no other documentation on
this piece of &^*&. Strangely there is nothing on Twiki either. I
have better things to do than google the world to figure out how this
works!
I tried it with 9.2 with similar results (I'm currently running with no
firewall to see if that works and it's not making me feel good or
helping one iota) and ended up waiting till the public release where it
was finally placed on FTP.
Okay..frustration over. To any I offended, I'm sorry, but this is NOT
what I joined the club to get.
By the way..torrent just stopped dead...oh what fun

Now..does anyone have a point by point set of instructions on setting
this god forsaken thing up? And don't point me to the FAQ on the club
site, please. It's about as much use as stone knife when trying to cut
steel. It seems to work for some but judging from the traffic here and
elsewhere it's a frustrating, angering and ultimately bad thing for MDK
in the sense of customer satisfaction.
Thanks.

John, what speed connection do you have? cable, t1, phone line, dsl?
here is what I put in a command line as user not root:
btdownloadgui.py --max_upload_rate 12 mytorrent-yourusername.torrent

This will limit the upload and allow a faster download. Once you put that
in it will ask where to save the files, I use the bittorent gui which
makes it more user friendly for me. Not a cli guy so to speak. Anyway
give that a try and see what you get. Also is your computer on a LAN or
stand alone? I had to open ports on the router for my set up. HTH
ADSL, semi fixed IP, that is in theory I have a DHCP connection but I've
had the same IP for about 7 months now. 2048 down 1024 up. Ports wide
open. My box is my router so that shouldn't be a problem. It could be
that things are just slow today.
I'm only seeing 24 peers out there at the moment a decrease of about 40 in
the last 10 minutes and my speed has dropped accordingly. Rough estimate
now is 2 and one half weeks.
I know that SOME people are happy with this arrangement but for the life of
me I can't understand why Mandrake wants to put so many people off. All
the posts about good speed are in the first couple of days after the distro
is announced and then the complaints seem to start because people take
their torrents down and leave us latecomers to stew in downloads that are
reminiscent of 300bps days.
Whoops..down to 18 peers and 3 seeds...this is getting awful :-)

I'm seeing 97 peers and 41 seeds, dl speeds in the 70's and 80's. I set my
upload limit to 13 kBs and opened port 6881 on my smoothwall. My only worry
is I may be violating the terms of service agreement with the isp.

Do you have "kernel-source" for the 9.2 kernel installed. That may be a
problem if it is not installed. Also the NVIDIA-GLX and NVIDIA -kernel should
be installed. Sorry I lost track of this installing 10.0 so I can't remember

Owen,
When you login, type X, and press enter to start the X server. After
you're in, go into Mandrake Control Center. Go into System, then Display
Manager to choose a graphical login. The boot screen is Lilo, which is
what most people use(I think.) I'm not sure what it was like before, as
I've never used Mdk9.1, but if you want to use Grub, go to
Boot>>Bootloader to configure it.

I too was getting horrible rates downstream, so I followed the
suggestion in the FAQ on the club site and forwarded the mentioned ports
on my router. After doing that, I was sustaining 200-250 downstream. I
did not throttle my upstream and it remained about 35-50.

I went to bed about midnight and got up at 0630 and I had the first
three images downloaded. Fired off disk 4 & 5 and got those in about 2
hrs.

Yup. Third time attempting it. Also have set it to allow multiple
connections, which, I've heard speeds things up. No joy.

In fact the speed is degrading rapidly now. Ranging from 6 KBbs to 0.2. Most
of it under 0.5. There is nothing wrong with the route, I've tested it.
Protocol analysis shows a whack of bad packets arriving and being
rejected..upwards of 80% on each connection I've attempted.

I'm about ready to give this up here. Reliable this is not at the moment.

Not that way, at any rate. It's usage resembles regular command line
ftp, but it handles that chore much better and much more user-friendly
than regular ftp. But you can only go to one site at a time. What you're
trying to do there is to query, and for that you need an http client
like Mozilla, lynx, or what have you. But for the actual file transfer
you use ncftp. For instance

$ ncftp ftp.rpmfind.net

< messages and so forth>

ncftp> cd /pub/Linux/Mandrake/9.2
ncftp> get p0rn-1.3.0.i586.rpm

ncftp> quit

:)

In other words, you manipulate it pretty much like you would an ftp
session, but think of it as ftp on steroids :).

(Disclaimer, that p0rn rpm doesn't really exist.) ;)

The directory where you started ncftp. It doesn't use download
directories - just start it in your regular directory (/home/user) and
it'll put the files there.

I've used it for years now - very useful. It will for instance ask you
whether or not you want to save a "placeholder" so that you don't have
to type some long ftp url to get the files - you can just say 'ncftp
updates' and be transported to the Mandrake 9.2 updates directory, for
instance.

I'm seeing 97 peers and 41 seeds, dl speeds in the 70's and 80's. I set my
upload limit to 13 kBs and opened port 6881 on my smoothwall. My only worry
is I may be violating the terms of service agreement with the isp.

This is strange, I had both of the powerpack bittorrents downloaded in about 8
hours, the download was running full bore capacity of my broadband so I don't
understand unless you are routing through a busy server on the internet. Have
you tried stopping and restarting?

ADSL, semi fixed IP, that is in theory I have a DHCP connection but I've had
the same IP for about 7 months now. 2048 down 1024 up. Ports wide open. My
box is my router so that shouldn't be a problem. It could be that things are
just slow today.

I'm only seeing 24 peers out there at the moment a decrease of about 40 in the
last 10 minutes and my speed has dropped accordingly. Rough estimate now is
2 and one half weeks.

I know that SOME people are happy with this arrangement but for the life of me
I can't understand why Mandrake wants to put so many people off. All the
posts about good speed are in the first couple of days after the distro is
announced and then the complaints seem to start because people take their
torrents down and leave us latecomers to stew in downloads that are
reminiscent of 300bps days.

Whoops..down to 18 peers and 3 seeds...this is getting awful :-)

[newbie] Installing newer Mozilla on Mandrake 9.1

2004-03-07 Thread Miroslav Skoric
Gentle folks,

What makes me wonder is if there is some detailed description of the
procedure how to install (in fact, to upgrade) Mozilla. Actually, what I
want to do is to upgrade Mozilla combo that comes with Mandrake 9.1
distribution. I'd prefer to remain with combo version, although I might
be interested in trying new separate mailer and browser.

The most important is to make safe the existing email. What should I do?
How to backup the email and restore it back? I read somewhere that an
older Mozilla should be de-installed before to install the new one.

Any pointers about?

Regards,

Misko

Dear All

Paul, did you solve your problem? Some time ago I also tried to import
the fonts from my Windows 2000 partition. It seemed to be ok while doing
the installation, but after that my user's account lost its 'native'
fonts (it got some strange signs instead of the characters). I couldn't
resolve that issue, even after re-creating that one user's account from
scratch. At the end, I had to re-install the system again.

What about your experience?

Okay..then how is it supposed to work and what are the configuration issues?

This is exactly the same answer I got with 9.2 with the same lack of
explaination. Maybe I'm being as thick as a brick here (something I'm more
than prepared to admit) but the understanding and configuration are what I'm
looking for.

As for being in the minority perhaps I am. Still..something a bit more
helpful "than you don't understand" would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and I never did have a problem ftp'ing the old way. :-)

John, what speed connection do you have? cable, t1, phone line, dsl?
here is what I put in a command line as user not root:

btdownloadgui.py --max_upload_rate 12 mytorrent-yourusername.torrent

This will limit the upload and allow a faster download. Once you put that in
it will ask where to save the files, I use the bittorent gui which makes it
more user friendly for me. Not a cli guy so to speak. Anyway give that a try
and see what you get. Also is your computer on a LAN or stand alone? I had
to open ports on the router for my set up. HTH

Well I can only say I think you are in the vocal minority. Looking at the
statistics at http://torrent.mandrakesoft.com:6969/ thousands of people have
successfully downloaded.

I have to say again that the biggest problem with bittorrent is that people
don't understand how it works, and their machines aren't configured properly.
Yes there are specific issues that affect some issues, and there are
workarounds for most. For those that it really doesn't work, ftp/http
downloads are available by request.

This definitely beats the old days when I would sit in front of my computer
constantly hitting refresh for two hours trying to get in at an ftp server.

Ok Derek, does this look any better? If not I guess maybe I'd just better
go bury my head somewhere.

That would not help because msec would come along and change the perms back to
660. You could always use drakperm to override msec, but my experience with
msec is that its best not to try to fight it. Just set the path
to /home/chris/something and there is no problem.

files against the originals and found one rule in the rules file:
##

and the interface file are different:

My original setup had just dhcp under options. My need here is if these
messages are that important in that my connection with my isp is
healthy? Can I safely drop them and what would that rule look like? I'm
assuming that something on this order would go in my rules file.

Thanks again,

Re: [newbie] Installing My modem with tar.gz driver CD

2004-03-07 Thread Weiers Coetser
Hi Thanks again for the good advice.
Ok... I've tried again to install my modem driver: I got stuck shortly after
extracting the files from the tar.gz file. I try to give full details here:

I will be extremely grateful if somebody could tell me what I could do
differently to make it work.

I have an Aztech internal modem in my computer:
Model: MSP2900 56k PCI Modem

The installation cd has a linux tar.gz file in it: slmdm-2.7.14

I created a Modem directory in my home directory home/modem

Then I extracted all the files into that direcectory. So now my directory
structure is home/modem/slmdm-2.7.14

Files in that directory are:

amrmo_init.c
tax_init.c
mdm_params.c
slusb.modules-dist
amrmo.o
fax.o
mdm_sltty.c
slver

sysdep_pci.c
editme.c
mdm_init.c
slmdm.modules-dist

slmdm.spec
usb_st7554.c

I opened the console and for safety gave the 'su' command (It did not ask me
for a password because I did not register a system admin password when I
installed 9.2)

The readme file stated that I had to edit the Makefile to contain

KERNEL_INCLUDES=/path/to/linux/include

So I followed their suggestion and typed the following command in the
console terminal:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] slmdm-2.7.14]# make KERNEL_INCLUDES=/path/to/linux/include

The immediate response was four pages of commands, and because I am stil
typing this e-mail in Windows (because my modem is not installed in linux I
have to retype all the computer's responses here: will try to do so
accurately)

Guess I'm either too dense to get it or something. So, if I were to create
a dir called "bayes" in my etc/mail/spamassassin for the bayes path and set
the "bayes_file_mode to 666 vice 0777 would this solve the problem? I do
have a lockfile created when I run sa-learn.

So, if ya need to kick me in the head to get me to understand, by all means
do.

[newbie] OT: Writing BASIC function in OpenOffice.org - scalc

2004-03-07 Thread Sharrea Day
Hi all
I know this is not the right place to be asking about this but I asked on
the oooforum but got no replies and thought that since there are so many
smart cookies on this list that perhaps someone might know the solution to
my problem. I am a REAL NEWBIE on this BASIC scripting!

I've written a User Defined Function (UDF) in scalc for calculating income
tax at different rates for NZ's various tax brackets. The only problem is
that I need to use the builtin ROUNDDOWN function (to truncate the cents)
in my UDF. I'm guessing that because the ROUNDDOWN function is not
explicitly defined in my UDF I get a 'BASIC runtime error':

"Sub-routine procedure or function procedure not defined."

Here's a piece of my code:

ElseIf GrossPay > 182 And GrossPay < 731 Then
RoundGP = ROUNDDOWN(GrossPay, 0)
AI = RoundGP*52
PAYE = (0.21*AI)-570
AEarnLevy = 0.012*AI
WDed = (PAYE + AEarnLevy)/52
Tax1 = ROUNDDOWN(WDed, 2)

What I need to know is:
1. Is my assumption correct - that I need to include the ROUNDDOWN function
in my UDF?

2. If so, how do I do that if I don't know what actual code is used for
that builtin function? I've googled and googled and now I'm cross-eyed!

3. Am I way off track or perhaps my requirement is impossible?

Any help would be muchly appreciated.

Cheers
Sharrea

[newbie] LCD Monitor questions

2004-03-07 Thread Troy Thomas Hall
Ok. This is probably a VERY stupid question but here goes.
With a conventional CRT you have specific "drivers" that you need to use
and you have another set of files which control how the color interacts
with the monitor and other devices. I forget the extension for these.
Now, I am blessed to have a Northgate Innovations 19" LCD flat panel
monitor with 1280x1024 resolution. The thing is that the fonts and such
are no where near as sharp as they were on my 17" CRT. I've tried to
ask Northgate about "drivers" and how to configure things to work best
with programs such as Adobe Photoshop and I'm told there is nothing to
configure.
I really enjoy working with graphics and touching photo's up and such so
this is fairly important to me. When I retouch a photo what I see is
GOT to be what comes out the printer ( thats why the color protocol
files) I use an Epson C82 printer ( only becuase I can't afford the
2200 ) which is an true CMYK printer, again for the same reason. And an
Assylum GeForce FX 5200 128M AGP video card which was the best I could
afford and only 1 step down from top of the line when I bought it last
year. My system is an Asus A7S333 with 768M pc2100 DDR ram 80G & 20G
HD, onboard sound (disabled) and an MadDog 5.1 SoundCard

I don't know what you did wrong, but here's how bittorrent is working on
my system.
When I click on the bittorrent download icon it opens another web page.
there it shows several files the first two of which are the distribution
ISO's. I click on the first one which is about 2.8G This opens a
dialog which asks me where to put the files. By default it will put
them in a Mandrake 10 folder. Once I've chosen the proper place it
starts the process. This will take a VERY long time. Currently I have
both the first set of CD's and CD4 downloading simultaneously. Its been
doing this for about 36hrs now. Everything is progressing smoothly.

It looks like you are using spamassassin "site wide" with everyone using the
same settings. I say this because if your users had a
~/.spamassassin/user_prefs file then by default it would try to use a lock
file in that folder.

Your system is trying to use a lock file in the site wide settings
folder /etc/mail/spamassassin which of course does not have write permission
for users.

The solution is to either put the line
bayes_path /path/to/file

in the /etc/mail/spamassassin/local.cf file where the path points to a
directory with 666 permissions, or else create a ~/.spamassassin/user_prefs
file in each users home. The advantage of doing this is that each user will
have customised spamassassin settings and their own Bayes database.

Refer to the Postfix guide on my home page for suggestions of how to set it
up.

Actually whole MCC firewall and internet connecting is weird: first

"manage connection" don't show my Internet access (ppp+). third, always
after changing firewall rules it asks me my Internet connection (there

The shorewall configuration GUI in Mandrake sucks. That is why so many people
dislike shorewall. You are much better off configuring shorewall directly in
the text files. (Or using the webmin module)

Flash of inspiration!!

Rereading the above paragraph gives me an idea. You are using ppp over
ethernet yes? Here in the UK we use ppp over atm so I have no personal
experience with pppoe, but my understanding is that a ppp connection is made,
and then an ethernet connection runs over the top of that, and you make your
connection to the ethernet. Yes? In that case your /etc/shorewall/interfaces
file should show eth0 as 'net' and eth1 as 'loc' , and your masq file should
reference eth0.
Perhaps someone who uses pppoe could comment on that.

And it was because the silly wizard installs tmdns (?) even though you
have bind installed. The result being tmdns takes over and bind never
gets to do its job.

I didn't think it was obvious to make a directory for the burn, but
never will get geek status, anyway, so what do I know.

Burning as we speak, I think. At 12x even. With two torrents going
too.

Thanks guys.

This is a very basic feature of Linux nad has been in exitence since forever.
maybe it is so basic that everyone just assumes that everyone else knows how
to do it.

Actually, there are 6 virtual consoles, VT1 through VT6, accessed with a
ctrl-alt-Fx sequence where x number of the console you wish to access.

[newbie] Spamassassin - Cannot create lockfile

2004-03-07 Thread Chris
While looking through my syslog I found the following entry:

Mar 7 04:20:47 dhcppc0 spamd[24012]: bayes: lock: 24012 cannot create tmp
lockfile /etc/mail/spamassassin/bayes.lock.dhcppc0.24012 for
/etc/mail/spamassassin/bayes.lock: Permission denied

I'm assuming from the line below, I have thousands of these, that SA writes
an entry for each rule it runs against a message?

Mar 7 06:10:43 dhcppc0 spamd[1785]: Subroutine
RM_usd_onllovetodate_uri_test redefined at
/etc/mail/spamassassin/1_myrule.cf, rule RM_usd_onllovetodate, line 8,

redefined at
/etc/mail/spamassassin/sa-blacklist.2004022204.withdead.uri.cf, rule
WLS_URI_7258, line 8, line 35.

And lastly, probably a dumb newbie question, there is no problems caused if
I deleted all the .gzip log files in /var/log is there?

Thanks

Ya, I think I spoke too soon, the GTK2 interface hooked me. Stick with GCombust,
it has never once failed me, except on bad media (my fault for cheapin' out) and
you can just browse to the ISO you want to burn, none of this setting a specific
dir for images, it Just Works (TM).

Of course, Tom B. is gonna chime in any minute about burning from the CLI...

[newbie] Adding entry to lilo.conf

2004-03-07 Thread Trey Sizemore
I currently have both Windows and Mandrake 10 RC-1 installed on my HD
using lilo to dual boot. I have added Arch Linux 0.6 to the mix and
want to be able to boot this from lilo. Before I hose something up, I
just wanted to ask the correct way to add this to lilo. Is it as simple
as adding an entry like 'image-/dev/hda9' and 'label="Arch"' to my
/etc/lilo.conf. If I want to access the Arch drives from Mandrake,
would I also need to add the entries to my fstab? Attached are my
existing lilo.conf and fstab files. The Arch root partition is on
/dev/hda9.

Thanks for the input.

Hmmm, you mean like this?:

Starting to write CD/DVD at speed 16 in real TAO mode for single session.
Waiting for reader process to fill input buffer ... /usr/bin/cdrecord: Premature

Not sure what that means myself. Lemme play with it a bit and see...

Try ERoaster, you can get it from Charles' urpmi source. It's definitely lookin'
like a replacement for GCombust, it's GTK2 and just as easy to use (drag and
drop support, etc.) and it has an intuitive interface for all burning methods

What has changed lately ?
Did you change anything like bios settings?
kernel updates?
is the desktop icon well set up ,
can you mount and umount /mnt/cdrom
try, in a terminal with a data disk in drive,
mount /mnt cdrom (it's probably mounted already)
if so umount /mnt/cdrom
then,
mount /mnt/cdrom
then,
ls /mnt/cdrom
and see it it reads data.
If it fails maybe the ide cable is not seated properly?
not likely because you say it reads data in windblows.
I think I would try removing the device form the system after that
and remaking it with the CL in fstab but that can be risky.
I'm assuming it has worked in M9.2 before.
I just wonder whether the Xwindows display programme may be
at fault, because of the konq gui involvement .Do you have
any other hangups in other programmes?
Is it just the writer when it hangs ?
It has worked before in 9.2 - it's even worked intermittently over the
last couple of days. I've changed the cable, but this doesn't seem to
make much difference. I've now disabled supermount and am mounting cds
manually from cl (I'll have to try my hand at bash scripts to cut down
on the typing). Trouble is, when it doesn't work which is at least half
the time, it can freeze the system solid. Hard reboots for Linux?
That's almost unheard of!!

As regards other programs, mozilla 1.4 crashes a lot and I have a
similar cd problem (i.e crashing) when trying to run VMware. Nothing
else so drastic as this though.
I'm away for a spell,

Your English is just fine. (Where is domain .ee ? )

That -r should be -R for recursive operation. -r specifies a reference file,
IIRC. Just so no-one gets confused. :)

[newbie] Bootsplash GUI?

2004-03-07 Thread Amichai Rotman
Hi All,

Is there a Bootsplash GUI?

I am looking for a GUI to configure the bootslash themes, all I found is
a bunch of scripts...

Thanks,

Re: [newbie] Problem with sharing ADSL on mdk 10

2004-03-07 Thread LtCdData
i know this is not the solution you are after but

get yourself a router (in my case a speedtouch 510 - 4 port - NOT usb)
share connection with the router. dump shorewall
the end

Thanks, but it didn't help, shorewall started but I still can't share my
ADSL.
As for the question, no I didn't put it there, Mandrake Controll Center
internet connection sharing tool put it there.
Here is /etc/shorewall/interfaces:

#ZONEINTERFACE BROADCAST OPTIONS
net ppp+detect
loc eth0detect
#LAST LINE -- ADD YOUR ENTRIES BEFORE THIS ONE -- DO NOT REMOVE

/etc/shorewall/zones:

#ZONE DISPLAY COMMENTS
net Net Internet zone
loc Local Local
#LAST LINE - ADD YOUR ENTRIES ABOVE THIS ONE - DO NOT REMOVE
/etc/shorewall/policy:

# THE FOLLOWING POLICY MUST BE LAST
#
loc net ACCEPT
fw net ACCEPT
net all DROPinfo
all all REJECT info
#LAST LINE -- DO NOT REMOVE
/etc/shorewall/rules:

# PORTPORT(S)
DEST LIMIT

Nothing to do with your Internet sharing but you should remove these 2 lines

ACCEPT net fw udp 137,138,139 -
ACCEPT net fw tcp 137,138,139 -

If these lines are present, and you are running Samba (Windows networking),
then anyone on the internet could access your Samba file shares.

ACCEPT loc fw udp 137,138,139 -

Again nothing to do with your problem, but if you want to add any other
features to your Linux box you should open up the appropriate port here.
Ports you might like to open are :-
22 - ssh service
631 - CUPS print server
1 - Webmin configuration

ACCEPT loc fw tcp 137,138,139 -

This line has nothing to do with Internet sharing. I do not know how it got
in, but I suggest you remove it.

REDIRECTloc 3128tcp www -

ACCEPT fw net tcp www
#LAST LINE -- ADD YOUR ENTRIES BEFORE THIS ONE -- DO NOT REMOVE
/etc/shorewall/masq:

You only need one of these lines. The other can be removed.

ppp+192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0
ppp+192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0

I assume your internal ethernet is on the 192.168.0.0 subnet?

None of the comments I have made above would stop shorewall from working, and
you say that shorewall now starts, so it looks as if Internet sharing is
actually working.

Your problem may be that you have not configured the Windows clients
correctly. If you have not started a DHCP server on the Linux box (to
allocate IP addresses to the Windows machines), then you should be using
static addressing on the Windows clients. (IP addresses manually configured)
You should also configure the Windows clients to use the Linux box as the
"Default Gateway", and you should enter the IP addresses of your ISPs DNS
servers in the DNS configuration of your Windows clients.

BTW: By default shorewall inhibits 'ping' so do not be surprised if you cannot
ping the Linux box from your Windows clients.

Yes, my internal ethernet subnet is 192.168.0.0.
I configured windows but it didn't help, I even allowed pinging (from
MCC) but i still can't ping my box.
And "dhcpd" daemon is running and is configured (with DHCP configuration
wizard).
I liked to get it work like mdk 9.x had (DHCP auto configuring windows).

Actually whole MCC firewall and internet connecting is weird: first
button "Internet connection" is always empty, even if i fill there
something and I click "ok", next time it is empty again. second button
"manage connection" don't show my Internet access (ppp+). third, always
after changing firewall rules it asks me my Internet connection (there
is written, if adsl, put ppp+) but there is list only (i can't change
it) and no ppp+, only eth0 and eth1 (so I have used always eth0, this is
connected to ADSL modem).

(Sorry about my bad English skills ;))

You can use the urpmi program. Look through the newbie and expert archives,
there have been lots of posts about it.

Anyway, I'm going to take a bit of a shot in the dark here. In your log file,
you have the line:
> (WW) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize AGP
So, just to go by process of elimination, try disabling your AGP support for
the driver and see if that helps any. To do so, edit your XF86Config-4 file:
> Section "Device"
> Identifier "device1"
> Driver "nvidia"
> Option "DPMS"
> EndSection
And add an option for "NvAgp" to disable AGP support in the driver, like so:
> Section "Device"
> Identifier "device1"
> Driver "nvidia"
> Option "DPMS"
> Option "NvAgp" "0"
> EndSection

You can also maybe go to the NVIDIA Linux forum, at www.nvnews.net (I think?)
to see if anyone else has encountered your problem. In any event, there is a
link to this forum on NVIDIA's Linux drivers page.

Hope your problems get sorted out.

Philip

Maybe you should try installing the glibc-static-devel package?
