Re: [newbie]New-old computer advice request
Sounds like you've got one of the old AT motherboards. As far as the keyboard goes, you should be able to get a PS/2 keyboard to work by buying a PS/2 to AT adapter. Now, when it comes to the mouse, if it's the old serial type of mouse, unless one of your local computer stores happens to have an old serial mouse, best place to go for one of those is Ebay. You can get a PS/2 to serial adapter. One might come with the keyboard adapter, but 9 times out of 10 the adapters for the mice don't work. Everything else looks fine, except you might want to see if the board will support a bigger hard drive if you've got a spare one floating around. USR is notorious for not supporting Linux. External serial modems from any manufacturer will work. Most WinModems with LUCENT chipsets (LinModems) work, too (better than they do in Windows, in my experience). Some Conexant chipsets work (never used them, but I've heard the drivers are proprietary). And, finally, PCTel Winmodems may work, too. Re: [newbie] Unpleasant stigma on Mandrake users
Isn't it great that the Linux community can build camps around distros, bad mouth other distros and talk about how there's is the best and why??? Over in the MS OS community that I just left two weeks ago, there's none of this talk because... there's no choice. Rory P.S. Make no mistake about it - the distro that is the most user-friendly (MDK still has a long way to go - sorry, but I've been involved in UI development, ease of use and navigation for software and see the shortfalls of MDK as a new user), the easiest to update (read: no need for command lines for those who choose not to use them-MDK is close) and the easiest to install new programs on (read: getting rid of dependency issues. Download, click and install. End of story.) will champion the Linux community in a way that those "difficult distros" and those snobby Linux insiders will never be able to do. Why? Because that will be the distro that finally gives those MS OS users the choice to leave, try a new OS for the first time in their lives and join a community that is free to argue over the code and implementation of code it is allowed to see, change and make their own. > That is a response I got in the shorewall list. Small little thingy that the ps2 plug fits in one end and the larger diameter AT plug goes into the computer. I assume from the equipment list that that is what you have and not a seriel connection for the keyboard. Have anyone experienced the same problem as follows? Whem i run Mldonkey, or as a service with mlnet, the swap usage goes up till I must reboot. This only happens when I run Mlnet ou Mldondey, I've check with top and Mldonkey-gui or mlnet is the process which consumes more memory ou processor. How could I fix it? thanks Otavio

The trouble with using SWAT is that it replaces the original Mandrake config file which is heavily annotated and has defaults which work "out of the box". I suggest you replace your config file with the default you will find at /usr/share/samba/smb.conf.clean and then start again from there. Reading the default config file will give you a lot of hints. Before users can connect to their home directories on your server you must execute the command smbpasswd -a user_name where user_name is a logon name that exits in both windows and Linux environments. You will be prompted for the *Windows* password of that user which does not have to be the same as that users Linux password. derek -- www.jennings.homelinux.net http://twiki.mdklinuxfaq.org Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? The xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx address is hardcoded into the nic and each nic has a unique one. This is called a mac address. A dhcp server will read the mac address and use this to reserve a specific ip address for a machine throughout the lease period, but they are not related in any way. -- /g Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Kernel update woes
I tried kernels using urpmi also, but have reverted to the way I did them for years... Download and install the kernel sources for the new kernel. Download the rpm's for whichever variety of kernel(s) you want. Logon as root and install the rpms. Open etc/lilo.conf with an editor and make sure the stanza is there for every new kernel. Open a terminal as root and issue a lilo -v command. Reboot and try out the new kernels. If you are satisfied that the new kernel operates correctly, open lilo.conf again and change the default boot entry to the *label* of the kernel you want to boot as a default. As root, open a terminal and issue lilo -v That's all there is to it. Rick Kunath Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Kernel update woes
Hi, I experienced exactly the same when updating from 2.4.22-26 to 2.4.22-28. I searched the web and this list looking for answers and I found none. After several attepmts to run 'lilo' with different options (all unsuccessful with the same error message), I decided to be brave (I have a full back up of my system) and rebooted. To my surprise, all went well, but the system started with the old kernel. I guess this is because, as lilo failed, nothing was changed. So I think the links in /boot are used by LILO to update the boot loader, but the real paths to kernel, etc, are used in the boot loader. Then I entered 'lilo -v' (after changing all links in /boot to point to the new kernel), and this time there was no error. One more reboot and now I am running the latest kernel. Problem is once a known to be good mirror is posted to a public list, it becomes that much more worthless. IE, /.'d ... and of diminished use to everyone. In the long run the advice to "just have to manually check the mirrors until you find one that has been updated ..." is the best advice. Proxad has become slow, even unreachable sometimes since it was revealed on lists that it was 'currently' first to update to current cooker. Please remember Mandrake doesn't have any mirrors. Those that do mirror Mandrake, do so as a donation of disk space, bandwidth, and administration. "pile'n on" as is often the result of public annoucements to ML's, an will only result in these donators reducing allowed users, bandwidth, or worse ... drop the whole deal altogether. These are the mirrors that also host past releases of Mandrake (and 10.0 is a past release). They also host other distros. If Mandrake users start crowdin their mirror, all they have to do is shut it all off. So it's a problem for 9.x-10.0 users also. Many already allow only so many anonymous logins, so their only choice is too quit hosting Mandrake if the load becomes more than their willin to give. BTW, Proxad is not the best mirror right now. It was for a few days . but the word got out too fast ;( There was a good USA mirror till it got advertised on Mandrake ML's. > > but it would have been better if Mandrake made some form of > formal announcement in a flash newsletter and on the club > website. [newbie] Mldonkey
Well, I've always used Mldonkey with no problems but just recently I did the urpmi --auto-select thing and got a newer version of Mldonkey. Flashy, nice gui...and not worth a damn. It starts with this fancy screen with the penguin in the middle with all the networks around it. Greyed out. Not working. Not connecting. I tried going into settings/options but there's nothing that I can see that will help. The older version had a gui, and it was fairly straightforward and worked great here. Any ideas on how to get the new one working (or how to get back to the older version since urpmi always finds the new version now?) Thanks much. -- /\ Dark< >Lord \/ Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com Join the Club : http://www.mandrakeclub.com

[newbie] Kernel update woes
On advice from Mandrake Expert I have just installed the 2.4.22-28 kernel to replace the 2.4.22-10 supplied with Mandrake 9.2 ProSuite. When the RPM installed via urpmi an error occurred at the /sbin/lilo stage: error regenerating lilo The lilo.conf looked OK so I ran /sbin/lilo again and it returned Fatal: volid read error. Anybody know what that means? It could be a disk corruption I suppose, something in the MBR sector, so I should be worried right? I cannot risk a reboot with things the way they are because several links in /boot have been reassigned in the direction of the new kernel, which would probably lead to a kernel panic. The next stage would be to try and restore the old links. -- Len Lawrence -- There is hopeful symbolism in the fact that flags do not wave in a vacuum. -- Arthur C. [newbie] Synaptic pad tapping in v10
Hi. I have just installed Mandrake 10 on my laptop, and it looks amazing. Thing is, two things don't work, the Synaptics touch pad tapping and the pcmcia wi-fi card which is a Belkin model based on the Atmel drivers. Being a linux newbie im hoping to get some help getting them up and working. The PCMCIA card isn't too urgent, as I have seen an Orinoco model on ebay which I am told will work outta the box. The synaptics pad is a pain though. I have found some instructions on the net, but they basically say "recompile the kernal with this setting" which goes WAAAYYY over my head. Does anyone have some detailed, perfect for newbies, blow by blow instructions for how to get the synaptics tapping working ? Olly Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
