You will, however, find a soft-link to the /etc/mandrake-release as
listed as "redhat-release" - just a bit of leftovers from Mandrake being
an offshoot of Redhat, mate.

Open a term and cd into your /etc/ dir and you'll find it there.

Just open any editor you have and type in the file location of:

Hi,

Well, as problems go it's not a big problem...but this is the first linux

I'll try shutting it down several times. And, you're right, they'll most
probably fix it with the official release...maybe I'll wait until then to do
any tinkering.

By the arrow I meant that when I clicked on shut off, the screen became
black, but there was stillthe outline of my mouse's cursor, which I could
move around on the black screen. Then, I pressed the power button and shut
it down from there.

I think the protocol has changed enough since the last "good"
version of mldonkey that its performance would suck, but YMMV.
Also, servers seem to know what version you're running, and some
will not let you in if you're running old clients.

I think xMule is is the better way to go, but if you try an older
mldonkey, make sure you pay attention to the log so you can see
how servers are reacting to your client.

Re: [newbie] Image viewer

2004-04-10 Thread Marv Boyes
I like GQview, but I've been playing a bit lately with GThumb, as well.
Very nicely done and well-polished-- but I favor GQview because its
'Edit with the GIMP' option doesn't fire up another instance of the
GIMP, as GThumb seems to insist on doing (though I'm sure, if I were
more capable, I could figure out a way to get around that).

What I _really_ want to try, though, and have been trying to for months,
is PixiePlus. I can't get it to run on my system, either compiled form
source or installed from dedicated Mandrake 9.2 RPMs, because it insists
on my having ImageMagick 5.5.4, while Mdk 9.2 came with v5.5.7. It's a
bit off-topic: but can anyone suggest how I might get this thing to run?
It seems to be exactly what I've been looking for in an image manager
(i.e., something close to ACDSee, the only Windows app I really miss).
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

No, I use it as well, but then Kuickshow does the slide show, which
is great for getting a good look at a collection of photos. It's to
be hoped they get it sorted, because I'm going to miss it.

GQview has a slideshow option also. And otherwise you can use qiv.
Run qiv -itsfru for a slideshow of all images in
and its subdirectories. Remove the 'r' in the options to prevent
images from showing randomly, and the 's' to prevent qiv from
following the directory tree downwards. :-)

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "things shut down except for an

much, because I rarely shut down, but when I click to shutdown in KDE, I

only happens occasionally - used to be Linux developers wrote bugs you

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "things shut down except for an
arrow", but I'm having a similar problem. It doesn't bother me that
much, because I rarely shut down, but when I click to shutdown in KDE, I
usually have to do it 3 to 4 times before it works. I assume that it's a
bug that should be fixed with the Official 10.0 release.

Stephen wanted you to post the output of the command:
cat /etc/lilo.conf

lilo.conf is a name of a file, and it resides in a directory called /etc
cat will print the file on the screen.

You will first have to start a console shell, and then issue the above
command, and then cut and paste the output in your mail

Hi Dennis,

Thanks for offering your info.

Well, this is a fairly new computer...Dell desktop 8300 purchased last fall.
Intel P4 2.8 processor. 1 g RAM. 120 g hd, radeon pro 9800. I tried 10.0
on a much older gateway Intel 2 333mhz, 64 RAM...the same thing happened. I
tried them with the same monitor...maybe it's the monitor? It's viewsonic
g90f...I checked a compatibility chart on the mandrake site but it hadn't
been tested.

Sorry for falling into this thread a bit late (I've been away;)):

The first port of call should've been:

http://mandrake.vmlinuz.ca

and more specifically:

http://mandrake.vmlinuz.ca/bin/view/Main/NetworkCards

where you would've found a link to:

http://people.zeelandnet.nl/triade/linux/Belkin.html

and there's a howto for mdk9.2 which'll probably go for 10.0 too on the
belkinV2 card.

Good luck,

Re: [newbie] 10.0...shut down problems

2004-04-10 Thread Laura Callier
Hi,

OK, I'm going to reveal what a total computer novice I am...I don't know
what a you/etc/lilo.config file is or how to access it. I understand
completely if you don't want to take the time to explain it to me...I'll
find out what that file is and how to check the content and get back to you.

About USB, I am not using USB mouse or keyboard.

I had the same shut down problem when I tried out Xandros last month...not
only wouldn't it shut down, but it wouldn't let me use the power button to
turn it off.

Thanks,
Laura

Ah ha! Well my linux partition is hda5, mounted that, and in the lilo.conf i

 found:

 other=/dev/hda3
 label="old_windows"
 table=/dev/hda

Now I installed windows over my old windows partition, which an image of
 seems
to still appear in the windows boot loader, and obviously is causing problems

when booting on linux. I need to remove this but how?

(P.S. Is it me or is everyone else's mail getting returned occaisionally?)

hmmm, cause what I read,,,/etc/modprobe.conf is for a 2.4 kernel...
and /etc/modprobe.preload is the config for the 2.6 kernel

Yes (68 seconds). Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

No, I use it as well, but then Kuickshow does the slide show, which is
great for getting a good look at a collection of photos. It's to be
hoped they get it sorted, because I'm going to miss it.

GQview has a slideshow option also. And otherwise you can use qiv.
Run qiv -itsfru for a slideshow of all images in
and its subdirectories. Remove the 'r' in the options to prevent images
from showing randomly, and the 's' to prevent qiv from following the
directory tree downwards. :-)

[newbie] 10.0...shut down problems

2004-04-10 Thread Laura Callier

Hello,

New to Mandrake.  Installed 10.0 from Cheap
Bytes discs.  So far all is well except there is no auto shut off.
When I click shut off, things shut down except for an arrow.  I am able to
turn it off by using the power button, but would prefer an auto shut off.
Does anyone know if 10.0 is designed for auto shut off or if this is a
glitch? It could be a bios problem, but wanted to see what experience other
have had.

Thanks,
Laura

No, I use it as well, but then Kuickshow does the slide show, which is
great for getting a good look at a collection of photos. It's to be
hoped they get it sorted, because I'm going to miss it.

2004-04-10 Thread ibibhef
Thanks for the help. I assume that you are refering to these lines:

* Problem Tap-click does not work on Synaptics touchpad.
o Solution Install Synaptics driver from contrib. Follow the
instructions in the INSTALL file for configuring the XF86Config-4 file. You
may also need to load module evdev in your /etc/modprobe.preload file.

I can't find the name of the package I need to install from contrib. I
found a synaptic but that deals with apt-get.

Do you, or anyone else, know what package I need to urpmi?

Thanks.

Ah, I had a momentary lapse in OSs. :) Yes, I should have pointed out the
JetAudio is Windows-based. I have no idea if it runs in Wine. I have to
stick with using XP for all my ripping, downloading (can't get the legal
non-WMA DRM site I use to work in anything other than IE - Active X, I
assume) and music manipulation, as I test products for a Digital Audio Player
company and need to test in an Windows environment. So, that part of my
computer experience won't be migrating over to Linux with me. :(

Yeah, mplayer can play wma, but its unlikely to be able to play the DRM

As for Jetaudio, have you tried it under wine? you could get lucky.

then again, you'd be breaking the law to do it, so if your gonna, you
might as well just download them of kazza or something..

Part of what I'm asking is wrapped up in me just orienting myself to the
concept of updating a product that has three streams over public server.
It's new to me.

What I'm basically trying to determine is this

I'm running off the 10.0 CE ISOs right now with only security updates. So, to
catch up, should I be picking the Stable branch this week (which will become
the Official, I assume, when the Official ISO's are released) first to "catch
up" and then switch to the Community branch? Or, does just going with the CE
branch fully cover the Stable branch, as well?

In either case, I'm assuming that once the 10.0 Official ISOs hit the servers,
that I won't have to touch them as I'll either be caught up + patches (Stable
branch) or slightly ahead (CE branch), right?

I think its that same 'ole story here guys. I'm on the Shorewall mailing list.
I've only posted a few questions - when I was having trouble getting NFS to
work across my LAN but Tom Eastep was pretty nice about pointing out the FAQs
and stuff to me.

I -have- seen some pretty harsh messages there though. Not unlike here, I
might add. TBH, some seemed hard, yet others seem deserved. The usual post a
message, screaming for help, the world hates me, yet no pertinent info is
really given as to the problem. That kind of thingy.

If you're gonna use Shorewall (Mandrake or Toms version) then I'd highly
recommend that you visit their website and check out all the FAQs and
examples, joing the mailing list (lurk, lurk, lurk) before posting any msgs.

Its solid software, IMHO...Just my 2 cents worth. :-)

[newbie] k3b

2004-04-10 Thread Drew Martin
Hi All,
   How do I sort this?
No support for ATAPI with cdrdao
You will not be able to use all your reading devices as copy sources since
there is at least one not configured to use SCSI emulation and your system
does not support ATAPI with cdrdao.
Solution: The best and recommended solution is to enable ide-scsi (SCSI
emulation) for all devices. This way you won't have any problems.
I know it would better if this was put right.I'm using an IDE DVD-ROM 16x
and a TEAC CD-W58E writer. The DVD drive shows up as ATAPI and the TEAC as
SCSI drive,in the interface section.
 Cheers,
 Drew

[newbie] MDK 10 and Laptop Touch Pad

I just got a new Presario 2100. I read online a lot of success putting
Linux on this type of laptop. I first put MDK 9.1 because I didn't know

With MDK 9.1, I can tap the touch pad and it sees that as a left mouse
click. When I put MDK 10 on the laptop, the ability to just tap the pad
for a left mouse click went away.

How can I configure MDK 10 to see a tap on the touch pad as a left mouse
click? I have looked in the MCC, but don't see anything.

Thanks for the help.

modules.conf (2.4) == modprobe.conf (2.6)

Be careful in 10.0, because to accomodate both kernels, it is set up to keep
modules.conf and modprobe.conf in sync. This is done by a script called
generate-modprobe.conf which generates a modprobe.conf from your
modules.conf. This could cause problems if you hack your modprobe.conf to
get something working without changing the modules.conf too. The next time
something runs that triggers the script you changes will get overwritten.
So, if you need to change something like a sound driver in modprobe.conf,
change it in modules.conf also.

alsa is a set of kernel module drivers for sound that replaces the deprecated
OSS. aRTs is a sound server and will use whichever driver is active. If the
problem is with arts, you will most likely experience it with both the alsa
or oss drivers.

Personally, I run DreamweaverMX in WindowsXP with VMWare when I *HAVE*
to; otherwise, I use Netscape Composer/Mozilla Composer, Bluefish, and
CoffeeCup for linux...(or gedit).

You should be able to "share" the internet connection by enabling
sharing of the internet connection in MCC; I've always NOT used the
suggested bridging IP DHCP server in VMware and just assigned a nice old
static IP with the gateway being that of the host system and then used
IPTABLES to route as ICS would. Works fine for all my virtual machines.

hmmm, cause what I read,,,/etc/modprobe.conf is for a 2.4 kernel...
and /etc/modprobe.preload is the config for the 2.6 kernel

but I bet the problem is more along the lines of aRts -vs- alsa -vs- OSS. have
you set a timeout for aRts?

which kernel do you boot to?
I don't know if you were asking Rory or me. I'm using 2.6 - it gave me a
lot of grief at the beginning, then I hacked /etc/modprobe.conf and it
worked fine for a while, except for Totem, which has never worked for me
(and a fair few others) in 10.0.

Last night the whole audio side went doolally, but (after rebooting)
it's working fine this morning (at least KsCD is - I'm not touching
Totem any more). I think it was probably a dodgy CD causing Xine to
leave a zombie process somewhere (naturally I tested with a different
CD, but maybe the old one left some crap in the system).

What I find puzzling about 10.0 in general is not that some things don't
work - I expect that, particularly since it is essentially a beta.
However, my experience with Linux to date has been that things either
work or they don't - there's no "works sometimes" (that's something I
associate with that other OS). My experience with trying to get wvdial
to run on boot is similar. Sometimes it starts, sometimes it doesn't.

Gonzalo, I hope you can understand this. I have an 8139 running on an
older Asus motherboard. lsmod shows
8139too17160 1 (autoclean)
mii 3832 0 (autoclean) [8139too]

Maybe that is what you need to look for? Hope that helps
