Surely an oxymoron? I'm trying hard, really hard, but I've yet to

[newbie] Copying FTP tree

2004-04-18 Thread Arys P. Deloso
How do you get an exact copy of an FTP tree with ALL the permissions and
time stamps preserved?

I tried:
1. draksync BUT it gives up (does nothing) especially when the stuff
gets big; AND
2. ncftp with recursive get but recurses only 2 levels down with
sub-subdirectories having no contents AND permissions NOT preserved.

Is there a much simpler way to do this?

TIA

Assuming you are doing OO.01

You will have to create a template of exactly what you want, everything is
possible.

But to just get a different font, though you won't have choice of size, which
will require changing every time a new document is opened, do:- Click on
Tools/Options/text Document/ Basic western fonts.

Change what you want here.

For more functionality create a document template with both font, and size and
everything else you want or can dream of..

Hi!

What is your problem in facts?

I've downloaded the drivers from Linuxant for my
winmodem and I installed the RPM in KDE as su.
It was compiled succesfully (It does automatically
this, but you need the kernel sources to be installed
on the computer). There are 2 versions of the driver:
one free at 15k and a 15$ one unlimited.

If you are doing this from Linux, then

dd if=/dev/cdrom bs=2k | md5um

If you want to validate an .iso file before burning it, then substitute
the file name for /dev/cdrom.

Does anybody successfully use a Palm Tungsten C or Tungsten E with SuSE Linux

I unfortunately can't comment on the Palm OS 5 experience with Linux,
but I've had great success with my OS 4.1 Sony Clie SJ33. Both KPilot
and JPilot work like a charm (JPilot is probably the closest you'll get
to Palm Desktop on Linux, while KPilot is handy for both managing
conduits and quick-installing applications). For awhile, I synchronized
both Evolution and KOrganizer without difficulty, but I eventually just
went to JPilot as my primary PIM app. I'm even able to directly access
the Memory Stick (Sony's proprietary expansion card format, analogous to
the Secure Digital you'd have with the T|C or T|E), which appears on my
desktop as external mass storage, easily mounted.

My Mandrake installation appears to be using modules compiled to support
the old Handspring Visor (to my knowledge, the first Palm OS handheld
with USB sync capability). I believe these are kernel-level and should
be available on SuSE; in fact, you may have something newer. Unless
PalmSource have radically changed the way PalmOne devices communicate
with a desktop machine, there's a good chance your handheld and your PC
should be able to talk to eachother. Whether or not there would be
changes in synchronizing with particular KDE apps, I can't say with any
certainty.

I'm sure there's Palm OS 5-specific information out there somewhere.

Best of luck,
Marv

Not easier, just different. Of course, I have the benefit of hindsight, using
MDK for a few years now. Installing software is just as easy, if not easier, but
it took me a while to figure that out. I can't think of anything now that is not
as 'easy' as it was on XP, or even easier and less prone to bugs.

Perhaps you could refresh my memory? ;-)

Actually, you can install the TrueType fonts (which MS did *not* invent, and has
no right to claim ownership of) without a dual boot.

First install cabextract:

urpmi cabextract

then download and install/run this RPM:

...then just sit back and watch the magic!

This can be set by entering 'about:config' in the address bar, look for 'ui

The UI fonts for Mozilla, Galeon, etc. are also controlled by your Gnome config,
so KDE (bleh) settings don't affect it. One more reason to ditch KDE and use
something more efficient and less bloated, like say XFCE4, eh Stephen?

I was showing an assistant manager at work my linux laptop a couple of
weeks ago. He felt the same way about win xp. He doesn't want anything
that he would actually have to think about. I think that is the major
problem with windows. Linux makes you think about what you are doing and
you may learn something in the process. I recently put Gentoo on one of
my computers. It was a mental workout and one hell of an experience.
Mandrake is something like XP. You just install it and things just work.
You may have to install some things to tweek it, but all in all it just
works. I have been playing with Linux since 1999 and have been using it
exclusively for over a year now. I still consider myself a newbie. I
think the Linux world is seeing that Linux needs to be functionable as a
desktop environment and not just as server software. Mandrake fits this
need. I deleted XP from my life because I found everything I need in
linux. I sat down and thought about what I do on the computer and no
longer have to worry about viruses infecting my hard drive or even
rebooting. I don't have to worry about my computer freezing in the
middle of something. Keep using linux as a second OS and you will soon
see the differences.

OH yes, I'm running Linux Mandrake 9.2 if that matters.

So far that's where it stands with the OOo list. Nobody seems to have an
answer.

Am I actually dealing with a Mandrake issue here, and not an OOo problem
per se?? I'd sure like to get this resolved. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Those updates are in the community tree too, in fact, 10.0 official forked
from Community just recently and I don't think there have been any updates
since then. Anyway, the difference between 10.0 official and 10.0 community
is basically that any bugfix/security updates to 10.0 official wil happen in
the updates directories as they have in the past, while updates to 10.0 CE
will happen right in the distribution tree. Another difference is that
Communiyt will get some updated packages and other newer features that might
add some instability, like GNOME 2.6 may be packaged for 10.0 CE but not for
10.0 Official.

10.0 Official => stable, bugfix/security updates only
10.0 Community => more cutting edge with updates that include new packages
Cooker => Unstable development branch.

Got it:

1. A man, never mind a man who works with concrete, should never own a poodle,
unless they are an evil genius planning world domination.

2. A man who *does* own a poodle, who in this case looks like goat, should never
be allowed to 'come up behind you'.

2004-04-18 Thread Lanman
Steve Turner wrote:
Don't really understand what the big deal is, so they have switched from
Unix to Linux and have no intention of dropping windows from their desktops.
As far as other comments go about Windows being given away, it will never
happen unless Gates wants to give even more of his personal fortune up to
the US Justice Department.
I use and see the advantage of Linux but it will never be a big player as it
is too difficult for a layman or typical computer user to use.
Steve; In a superior manner to Windows, Linux desktops have been
undergoing major revamps, improvements and refinements. Most of the
applications for Linux desktops have seen major improvements as well.

Calgary won't be changing their desktops for a while, yet, but I'm sure
that it will be a topic of discussion in the next year or so, as soon as
their desktop licenses expire, or they need to replace existing systems.

The big deal is that Federal, Provincial and Municipal governments are
now adopting Linux in a big way. I can quote you chapter and verse about
the various ones that are already using it. As the article mentioned,
their systems are running 400 to 500 percent faster, so it's pretty
obvious that they're seeing the value of it.

But even if they don't switch their desktops, I'd be willing to bet that
they'll be trying out Open-Source software on their PC's in the near
future. It's the next logical step.

So, I guess the big deal is that another government is making the
switch, at least partially, and surely you can see the value in that?

As for your second comment, no one said it was a fact, more that it was
a rumour or possibility, and based on Microsoft's business practices, it
wouldn't come as much of a surprise if they decided to try that out,
legal consequences or not. Like you I'm thinking that it would cause
them legal problems, but I can also see where Linux and Open-Source has
essentially shot themselves in the foot on this one, because it could
be argues by Microsoft that Linux has an unfair advantage over Microsoft
because it's free. Microsoft might dodge the legal bullet just because
of that fact alone. Let's hope not, but you never know.

Your third comment is highly subjective though. I see kids sitting down
in front of Linux and having the desktop nailed in 2 hours. I have many
clients who have been using it for a long time, and even some new ones
who already understand enough to perform their normal tasks. The big
difference is that many of these clients are now asking intelligent
questions, because they enjoy learning about computers again. Linux
gives them a level of freedom and enjoyment that they haven't seen in a
long time.

What this one boils down to is a question of how linux is presented,
installed and preconfigured for the end-user. On my laptop, I keep a
demo system of KDE available for interested clients, using Windows 2000
icons and a theme that resembles Windows XP. I've set up Windows sound
themes, and renamed various programs using Microsoft names instead of
their real names.

Then I let the client know that I've acquired a demo of the new
"Windows" that's due out soon ( Grin! Grin! ), and I let them play with
it while I do other work. You'd be surprised how many ask me for a copy
before I leave their offices, and you'd be pleasantly surprised to see
their faces when I tell them that they've been using Linux!

If I had told them before they started playing with it, they would have
been nervous and apprehensive to try it. Once they have, they're very
surprised how easy it is to use. That's when the orders come in. It's a
bit sneaky, but it manages to get them past that fear of the unknown,
which, from my experience is the biggest detractor to getting people to
switch to Linux.

One last point on this topic. Most PC retailers, including the big guns
usually do preconfigurations of various applications and services before
the PC's get shipped out the door. If anyone is going to try selling
Linux in this manner, they have to be prepared to do the same. in either
case, there are a lot of tools which make the job considerably easier to
pre-configure, and to automate installations - whether it be Linux or
Windows. That would also go a long way to making things easier on new
users. Besides that, the difference in retail pricing should allow
anyone selling Linux-based PC's to include some form of support package,
and most consumers would be tickled pink if they knew they could get
tech-support for a reasonable fee, as long as that support was top-notch.

Hope this resolves your confusion about what the "Big Deal" is.

Lanman

Admitted, but that doesn't have anything to do with usability,
consistency and device support, right? And don't get too comfortable,
as soon as Linux gets enough penetration in the desktop market (which I
definitely think it will - think of 1.3 billion users in China), the
evil-doers will turn their attention on it. They've pretty much ignored
it for now since they get so much more bang for the buck from Windows.
Yes, but how do you write a virus for linux that will get anywhere near
the wide spread uptake that they do with windows??

What email app do you try to target??? with windows its easy, just
target IE flaws and you get OE and lookout thrown in for free cos they
use IE libs underneath..

on linux you have people using evolution, kmail, mozilla mail,
thunderbird and half a dozen others.. and there is no concensus on which
is the most popular.. (not to mention the fact that there are dozens of
versions of the above clients out there being used right now..)

That goes for nearly every other linux app... I'd say that the only
standardised software on linux desktop is the kernel and maybe
openoffice now...

Then there is the problem that a file is not executable till someone
makes it executable not insurmountable, but certainly a big issue.
following that is the fact that a unix/linux user isn't root and
therefore any application running as that user can't trash the system.

I suspect that the only linux virus that will ever get anywhere will
target servers running Apache or SSH or postfix etc..
and even then its not trouble free compared to windows.. for example,
with windows we have win3.1, 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP and 2003
all are related and all (for the most part with the possible exception
of 2003) backwards compatablee..

How many incremental versions of apache are there out in the wild now?
how many SSH versions? ditto with pretty much every other software
service that opens a port...

how do you target a virus when there is no real indication of what the
target is???

I'm not saying that a linux virus is impossible, it clearly isn't.. I am
saying that its never going to yeild the sort of results that windows
virus's do even if linux ends up with 95% of the desktop market.. and it
will likely have to contain allot more code then the current crop of
windows virus's use to "do their thing".

Can you plug the camera into the USB port directly ? - I have an
Olympus C-740 UZ and it works perfectly that way. After a short
while an icon for another "hard disk" pops up and all is well.

What do you mean by "can no longer use it" ? - Can't you get into
the system at all ? - If not, can you boot into single user mode ?
If so, from a root console, type : "msec 3" , whatch the messages
scroll by and then reboot normally. That way you reset all the
security setting to "high" in case you accidentially have "higher"
or "paranoid". You can use msec 2 as well, but I don recommend it
if you have more then one user.

By the way : it is wise to restrict your questions to one at a time
or one for each thread. Otherwise things get messed up really fast.

You have an Olympus camera, yes? xD is a format developed by Olympus

I've never had problems like that from updates, but occasionally
something does go wrong. There's always someone who can help you sort
it out. Worry not - it will get better.

I've done linux setups for a number of my clients - for home usage.
Mostly for surfing, word processing, printing, CD burning, MP3 and DVD
ripping - the gist of them are a bit older and only want that
functionality, but it's basically the same - they want it to work and
that's that - they don't want to install stuff and if they do, well, RPM
is quite easy to deal with. I make sure they're setup fully and
everything hums along the way it's supposed to. Give them some minor
hands on training, and off they go. I do almost cut my throat, though,
because I don't see them again for support issues. I do answer their
questions via email, but mostly, their done. They don't complain, they
love the stability.

But once again, it's already been setup and configured and sorted out
before they get the machine home - so yeah, they don't have the
headaches of fighting devices or what-have-you - they just use it.

If systems were "packaged" like that - almost like what you see from the
department stores - with a scanner and printer and speakers and the
likes, well, the "home" linux desktop would be seriously making waves -
but that's to come.

[newbie] Linuxant drivers for conexant modems...anyone tried them?

2004-04-18 Thread Laura Callier
Hi,

There may be another way to get a workable modem for my Dell Dimension 8300
desktop...rather than get an external modem, I have been researching on the
Dell support list...

My Dell comes with a Conexant modem. Conexant has a deparmtent called
Linuxant(Linuxant.org) , where people using Conexant modems for windows can
get updated drivers of the Linux version. The particular thread on the Dell
list was a person needing to get a compatible modem for Mandrake...he
downloaded the linux version of his Dell Conexant windmodem from Linuxant
and things worked great.

Anyone tried this?

[newbie] Security Update Woes

2004-04-18 Thread Owen Berio
I have just reinstalled the down load version of 9.2 for the fourth time.
In the previous installations all appeared well until I installed the
 security updates.
The initial installations identified correctly my cd rom, floppy, hard disc,
etc. Most gratifying was xD card reader was identified as "mt/windows" and
it worked. Opening sequence was "file/mnt/windows/dcim/100olymp/*.jpg"
But when I d/l and installed all of the suggested/listed security updates
utter ruin was the result. The xD card reader icon requested a program to
read the device . I tried everything on the KDE menu without success.
The floppy no longer responded. There was actually a lock attached to the
icon.
The Kmai was missing from the mail menu.
Kppp was also missing from the "Network/ Remote Access " menu.
I did searches for "100olymp" and "dcim" . Nothing was found, as though the
two file/directories were removed from the system.
Security updates somehow made my system so secure I could no longer use it.
Please, what can I do? I want to keep my system current with the necessary
updates.

The thing that makes me uneasy if the quote "Linux's killer app is not
Apache, it's cost,". It has been said that M$ have contingency plans
to give away windows if necessary until linux is beaten. They are
stockpiling funds to cover it. Let's hope that's another report that's
wrong, because cost is *the* big factor in too many decisions.

Thanks for the reply, Marc.

It was Powermax which I used. I went through all the tests, including the full
low level format. Powermax found nothing wrong. That's why I can't think what
the problem could be.

I will try another low level format and see what happens.

Hello Stephen.

I am afraid that I haven't access to another machine in which to try it.

The other drives work in their caddies, so I can't suspect the IDE cable could
be faulty just for this one drive - could it? However, you have given me an
idea! In case it is a caddy fault, I will try the "faulty" drive in one of
the other caddies which I know to be OK.

I will also try the drive upside down. If I can get it working again, it will
save me about £50 for a new drive.

Many thanks for your help

[newbie] server security

2004-04-18 Thread cervixcouch

I recently manage to get an Apache and imap server running on an old box
of mine at home. The servers work, but I feel that I should make the
effort to make them secure.

I am behind a router/firewall and also have shorewall running on the
computer. This is basically the same situation with my other home
computers, but I was wondering if there's more I can do to prevent either
server from being broken into from the Internet?

>From within my LAN, I can't ping or ftp the computer, though I can mount
samba shares, which requires a password. I'm not sure how I could test
this from outside the LAN.

If I do "telnet serverIP http" I get a response, but I don't know if this
is a bad thing or not.

Is there a way to thoroughly test the security of my servers? Or better
yet, how would I go about hacking them so I can make sure nobody else
can?

Since big corporate servers manned by trained professionals get hacked,
I'm concerned that mine may be sitting ducks right now, this being my
first foray into the world of server administration.

I post this every month or so whether I need to or not. I use a simple
script and just point to it instead of the browser itself.

#/bin/bash
browserPath="/usr/local/firefox/firefox"
url="$@"

$browserPath -remote "ping()"

# $? = false if running, true if not
if [ $? = 0 ] ; then
exec $browserPath -remote openURL"($url,new-tab)"
else
$browserPath $url
fi
exit

Change paths as necessary, of course.

Can you send your /etc/fstab? (Rather, copy/paste it into the message)

[newbie] Floppy Access - 2nd Request

2004-04-18 Thread rluchor

Since installing Mdk10 CE on both of my computers I've had a problem accessing the floppy drive.  I can mount and read the drive but can't copy to/from it, there is an "input/output error" message.  This happens however I'm logged in as owner or as root, the message is the same.

Anyone have a clue as to what the problem could be?

Rich

Have you tried the HD in another machine? Have you tried with a
different IDE cable? Have you tried with the drive installed upside
down? (not a joke)

Win98 is called Win98 because 98% of all hardware components will need

Been there done that. There are 2 different Maxtor diagnostic utilitys,
maxblast and and powermax. Powermax is far more usefull. have you used it?
Have you tried a low leval format. I had a problem with a maxtor drive where
that was the only thing that would help. There is a low level format utility
in powermax.

   Hope that helps

Thanks Angus. The problem is every time I remove the offending RPM, and try
again, the same thing happens. BTW, the one that fails ends up
in /var/cache/urpmi/rpms , so I reckon the system thinks it has the full
filewhich it hasn't. Thanks to Kaj for his tip, I'll try that and
manually dig through a mirror to get the RPM I need.

You'll have more potential to diagnose the problem by attempting to
mount it from a running system than by trying to install onto it. Can
you connect it as a second drive and try diskdrake on it?

Suppose that you think of Mozilla that is installed as an additional
software (not Mozilla that comes with Mandrake). Is that a case?

I run Mdk 9.1 that comes with Moz 1.3 and recently I added Netscape
7.1 and Mozilla 1.6 in additional. Both of them I installed using
their own installers and I used their default values. At the end it
seems they both run but look ugly and with hard-to-read fonts and, in
general, they look worse than the 'original' Mozilla.

I did not face any setup complaint during the installation and don't
know how to make them look better. I tested them all within KDE and
Gnome and it is the same (anyway I prefer KDE).

[newbie] Hard drive packed up?

2004-04-18 Thread Keith Powell
I know this isn't strictly Mandrake, so apologies.

My set-up here, is one computer with several hard drives each in its own
caddy. Each drive is used for a different purpose.

A couple of days ago, one of them (a Maxtor 40GB) stopped working a couple of
days ago whilst I was using it,. So I rebooted. It started to boot, then
stopped with the error message:

Partition Check:
hda: <4>hda: dma_timer_expiry: dma status ==0x21
hda: timeout waiting for DMA
hda: timeout waiting for DMA
hda: (__ide_dma_test_irq) called while not waiting

the hard drive activity light was permanently on.

This error message means nothing to me.

I have tried installing two different Linux distros, but neither would
install. I then found my old Windows98 CD and tried installing that - it
wouldn't.

I ran the complete Maxtor diagnostic program, but the results were that
everything was OK.

I have formatted the hard drive, and tried various things with FDISK. The
drive still can't be used.

Googling brings up nothing of apparent use.

Can the hard drive be sorted, or is it only fit to be thrown away?

Any ideas will be gratefully received.

Many thanks

Keith

Thank you. I managed to add:
urpmi.addmedia main
ftp://ftp.some-server.com/pub/Linux/distributions/mandrakelinux/official/10.0/i586/Mandrake/RPMS
with ../base/hdlist.cz

urpmi.addmedia contrib
ftp://ftp.some-server.com/pub/Linux/distributions/mandrakelinux/official/10.0/contrib/i586/
with ../../i586/Mandrake/base/hdlist2.cz

But media updates:
still missing, is there some diffrence to add updates?
And also something strange behaviour urpmi calculate depencies twice when
I say: # urpmi.update -a
But it works and I can install packages, only updates doesn't work.

best rgds

that was extending the truth a bit there,,, what the author said was "some
code" not "introduce a worm.. I now accuse YOU of spreading FUD also... this
is just how FUD gets going.
and it is worth noting also that these 'vulnerabilities' have been patched as
well.

Agree to keep your head where the sun don't shine and you never see the
light.

Stephen:

I don't know if this is what you're looking for but anyway here we go.

Create a script and put in there the command:
gnome-moz-remote --remote='openURL('$1', new-tab)' || gnome-moz-remote
$1

Now:
gnome-control-center -> Advanced -> Preferred Application -> Custom Web
Browser: Command
and enter:
yourscript.sh "%S"

For multiple instances you may want to change "new-tab" by "new-win".

Adolfo
