Open a terminal => type "su" and then put in your root password => type
"mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom" => double click on HOME, and then click
the down arrow until you're in the / directory, find /mnt, double click
that, then double click on /mnt/cdrom => you should now see your
stuff...

When you want to unmount that drive, in the same term you just had open,
type "umount /dev/cdrom" or "eject"

It would appear that for some reason, your automount is not working
correctly...so this is only a hacked fix - not a perm fix...

I usually use urpmi with the --noclean option so that I have a copy of everything I

Is there a way I can enable the --noclean option permanently?

[newbie] T40 & X4.3

2004-04-27 Thread Paul Kaplan
Last November I was able to configure X 4.3 on a Thinkpad T40 (257551U -Radeon
M7 w/ 32Mb) with Xinerama enabled so that the internal LCD and an external
LCD monitor formed a single contiguous desktop. This was using Mandrake9.2

I recently upgraded to Mandrake10 with kernel 2.6.3,
but still uses X 4.3. The same XF86Config-4 file no longer allows two
monitors...specifically, only the external monitor is used. There are no
hardware changes.

Any ideas what might have changed to cause the problem.

TIA
Paul

[newbie] system monitor for KDE

2004-04-27 Thread Jonathan Dlouhy
Is therr a system monitor for KDE that is similar to the GNOME system monitor,
or another app that will do the same thing so I can shut down processes I
can't shut down any other way? The GNOME app won't load most of the time,
otherwise it would be fine.

Thanks,

Try ~/.phoenix. Leftover from one of its 50 name changes.

[newbie] Mozilla-firefox and its files

2004-04-27 Thread Inhabitant of Zion
Hi

Finally decided to give firefox a try and am now totally stumpoed.

I can't see anything in my home folder that suggests to me as being where firefox hids
its fiules.

I want basically to put a copy of my bookmarks from ./mozilla into whereever it needs
to go so that I have all my bookmarks in firefox or I refuse to use it even if it does
have a nicer GUI and seems faster.

Anybody any ideas? I guess /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox is the place to start?

Just left click on an 'XML' symbol and you get automatically subscribed to

[newbie] Very Slow Samba Network browsing

2004-04-27 Thread Lanman
Has anyone run into this with Samba 3.0.2? I'm running a dual-CPU server
( Tyan board with Dual-1800+ Athlon MP CPU's and 1 GB DDR Ram), with
Samba on it ( and that's about all ) for 5 PC's in a network. The shares
are browseable by most, but it takes a long time for the shares to show up.

Network connections are good, as I have no problem browsing anything
else on the network, and Email and Internet activity is fast through my
Front-End Firewall Server.

The server is running Mandrake 9.2 and has been flawless until I updated
Samba from 2.2.8a to the current version. Even after the upgrade it was
running pretty fast. Ping time from the PC's to the server does not
exceed 1 ms, so it doesn't seem to be a network card or config problem
on the server which is running dual 3Com 3C905 onboard NIC's.

I've set up the lmhosts file in Linux and Windows on the PC's, as well
as on the server but browsing to this particular server takes about 30
to 40 seconds for each folder that gets opened.

It seems to be a bit slower on the Windows XP Pro systems than it is on
Linux using SMB4K or LinNeighborhood ( which says something all by
itself ), and the documentation I've found is either useless or has no
mention of this type of problem.

Thoughts? Ideas?

Lanman

Like Derek said, RSS is Really Simple Syndication, or Rich Site Summary,
or RDF Site Summary, depending on who you ask. It's an XML-type document
that describes the "stories" on a page. A user can put the RSS URL in an
aggregator and the aggregator displays it. For Linux, there are a few
aggregators: Liferea (rpm available for 9.2 or 10), Syndigator (now in
GTK2), Straw (don't know much about it). There's also an RSS panel
plugin for Mozilla/Firefox.

I'm looking forward to the day when weblogs, news sites, email, usenet
etc. are all integrated in one interface like an aggregator: read a
story on the net via the aggregator, post a reply directly from the
aggregator, or email the author, same with usenet and mail. They're all
just messages, after all.

Cool, thanks! I'm going to have to give it a try. As far as finding the
feeds, it might be using "auto discovery" which a lot of aggregators are
using these days. Can you right-click an orange XML button or link and
automatically subscribe? I'll find out soon enough as I plan on trying

If it won't run from the command line, it's probably not a file
assocation problem. It looks like for some weird reason your file
permissions have been reset. Type "ls -l *.bin" and see what you get

-rwxr-xr-x 1 david david 249 Feb 20 2004 somescript.bin

If you get something like

-rw-r--r-- 1 david david 249 Feb 20 2004 somescript.bin

(i.e. no "x"s in there), you need to type

chmod +x *.bin

which will make all .bin files in that directory executable.

Also check that you still own the files and they haven't switched to
being owned by root.

Sorry if this is an overly simple explanation, but you did say you
didn't use the command line much ;-)

I just d/l'd Charles' rpm's for 9.2 for my livecd experiment and I
noticed that the option to start xftaskbar4 is commented out of the
xinitrc script. I can't remember exactly where that lives, maybe
/usr/etc/xfce4/xinitrc ? Just uncomment that line in the script.

Not natively. You can run the ROX pinboard to get icons on the desktop,
or try idesk (http://idesk.timmfin.net/about.html). I add frequently
accessed directories to the panel by calling the command "rox
~/importantDirectory" .

I rolled over and took it like a Man in the end

I reinstalled, and whilst I was at it, set aside 3GB as FAT32, and reloaded
'98 on my main drive. It's there, as it worked before I reinstalled LiLo.

Trouble is, it aint showing up on LiLo again! And LiLo is on my MBR, and
Windows is first on the drive.

Oh well, I hopefully will be able to get it going :-) , It's not as though
there has been no posts on the subject, so a trawl through the archives may
bring up some info!

Hello,
I installed XFce4 last night... I don't know if I installed everithing
because I downloaded packages untill the rpms installed without error
message... :-[ It is a bit confusing the way rpms work!

  1. So now I have XFce4 running and it is loading a lot faster then
KDE... Is it possible to know the ram used by it? i would like to
use it on a 16 MB ram machine.
  2. My problem is the following: when I reduse a window (for exemple
thunderbird) where is it going and how can I restore it? I tried
left and right mouse button and nothing... I now it is something
stupid but I could not find it.
  3. Is it possible to add directories on the desktop or are all the
 icons added to the taskbar?
Thanks
Christophe

Possible.

No the cables are OK, take it from me, this is a system problem, not
physical connection.
There are 4 mobo usb sockets, and 2 header usb sockets all have
something plugged in.

But I don't have a usb connection right now.

?

meaning , nothing is showing up in kde-usb info, for instance,
there is a section for usb devices , but not a single device shows up in
there at this time.

Try insmod'ing different modules...? What do you get from a:
