[newbie] Laptop, Mdk 10.0 and external monitor

2004-05-12 Thread Mads Paulin
Hi,

I have Mdk10.0 running on my ASUS M2400N laptop.

I would like to connect an external lcd monitor running at 1280x1024.
The internal lcd panel is 1024x768.

I can switch between internal, external and both monitors using the Fn
key on my laptop and via acpi.

Is it possible to configure X to use different resolutions on the two
monitors ? - and if: How ?

It does not have to be at the same time

I know it can be done using two XF86Config-4 files, but I would like it
to happen automatically (even without the ctrl-altc-+/- switch..

Regards
Mads

After a bit of testing to make sure I didn't lose any messages,
attachments, etc, it seems that this DOES work from some other mailer
(not Kmail) if all the headers are exported with the text, AND there
are no extra separators added (such as , etc).

First, thanks to JoeHill and John Wilson for the replies. By doing
text as above, it can be done in one easy step, and you don't have to
go through Mozilla. I usually use TheBat for "strange" mail
conversions, as it can handle several formats well, both in and out.

J> Doesn't KMail have an option to store mail in mbox format yet?

Yes, and it can be selected on a per-folder basis. But no mbox export,
that I can find, IF mail is stored in another format other than mbox.
Am I missing something?

Use this link to generate the correct list of mirrors. Don't add the

gives, as root, from the command line.

To get the list of files in all the mirrors updated:

urpmi.update -a

To update only the update source:

urpmi.update --update

To update your system only from the update source:

urpmi --update --auto-select

To update your system from all sources:

urpmi --auto-select

I never use urpmi with a proxy but the man page talks about the
following switches

   --proxy proxyhost[:port|1080]
Use specified HTTP proxy.
   --proxy-user user:password
Use specified user and password to use for proxy authentication.
Or try to use the following syntax in /etc/urpmi/proxy.cfg:

http_proxy=hostname:port
proxy_user=user:pass

It should be in your home directory, i.e. /home/yourusername/.Mail

Note that it is a hidden directory due to the . in front of the name, so If
looking for it under Konqi you will need to go to the View menu and turn on
"Show Hidden Files".

/etc/resolv.conf was different - change them all to match what our

Hi Frank,

Many routers (like mine) have a DNS cache, so you can point the linux
boxes to nameserver 192.168.0.1 (or whatever IP your router has).

I have a DNS entry that I put at the end of every resolv.conf, its
139.130.4.5 which is telstra's (australian telecom) open DNS server, any
ISP can use it.. its handy as a fall back, perhaps you should find one
similiar in your area..

Do you have more then one protocal installed on the Windows machines?
If you are using more then TCP/IP, you can run into a problem of having
more then one master browser for the workgroup. If the election of the
master browser takes place using a protocal other then TCP/IP, the Samba
servers do not take part. So Samba isn't talking to to the machine that
the Windows machines are using for a master browser, and do not apear in
the neighborhood.

Frank,
What I usualy do is have the DHCP server give the Linux boxes a
fixed IP address based on the MAC address of the NIC. That way, you can
use DHCP on the all the machines on the network, but still have a statis
IP for the Linux machines. Most routers I have seen will alow you to
set up static IPs as well having a dynamic IP range for other machines.
I usualy cheat in getting the MAC address for the machine by using
normal DHCP setting for the first boot, and looking at the tables on the
router to get the MAC address, and the using cut and past to put it in
the static IP table. You can also use ifconfig to get/set the MAC address.
The only time you have to change things is if you change the NIC in
one of the Linux machines.

[newbie] samba configuration in 10.0

use with 9.2 as samba server to share some Linux partitions (no

while 9.2 uses samba 2.x.

Are there any gotchas I should be aware of for the porting of the samba
configuration files, or is it painless? I am not using any graphical
configuration tool for this task.

changed name servers and the ip addresses that worked yesterday don't
work today!

Frank
Frank; You should check whether or not you can ping all the systems on
your network first. ANY DNS server should work fine for the workstations
if the router is managing your Internet connection to Bell.

Assuming that your router is using an internal pppoe system to connect,
it's the only one that needs Bell's DNS servers. Your PC's can use any
other DNS servers that you can find.

Try a Tier-1 ISP like MCI or Rogers, Shaw, or Videotron. You can get
their DNS IP's by doing a "Whois" search on the Internet. If that
doesn't get you the info you need, try "www.dnstuff.net". They'll have
the info for sure.

Have a look at the results I got for Sympatico.ca.

http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/lookup.ch?name=sympatico.ca&type=A

Use the new DNS addresses for your workstations only - not for the
router! Let the router get it's DNS from Sympatico, so that if they ever
change again, the router will acquire the new ones automatically.

Also, consider using one of the PC's as a DHCP server. This will allow
you to assign IP addresses to all 3 PC's by associating their MAC
addresses to a specific IP address. That way, whether you're in Windows
or Linux, each machine will always receive the exact same IP each time.

make sure you turn off the DHCP server which is running on your router,
but leave the DHCP client on the router alone!

Re: [newbie] My screen and Modem

2004-05-12 Thread John Layt
What model of laptop is it? What graphics chip, etc? You will need to
manually add new modelines to your X config file to support the screen
resolutions. I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 with a wide-screen which I can give
you the modelines for, but we need to check that you have the same hardware
otherwise you might ruin your screen.

RE: [newbie] I'm losting my samba's shares after some time... permission denied... help plz.

2004-05-12 Thread Bill Shirley
Hi,

Do you have wins support = yes in the [global] section of
/etc/samba/smb.conf ?

os level = 33
domain master = yes
preferred master = yes
local master = yes
wins support = yes
domain logons = yes

Configure all PC's to use the linux box's IP address as
their WINS server and only use the TCP/IP protocol on the PC.
(Remove NetBeui protocol).

Are these PC's in the same workgroup as the linux machine?

Samba -> cups printing is kinda boinked on my system right
now, so I can't really help you on that one.

Your Computer has an ACPI partial installation, ACPI probabily have been

Now, i'm newbie, and i can't do it.Can you tell how i can do this?

[newbie] 10.0 Official CD's

2004-05-12 Thread Alex Brooks
Hi Di Hi Campers!

Just wondering if anyone has any idea when the 10.0 official CDs will
appear on the public mirrors, as the MDK home page says:

*"April 14th, 2004 - Mandrakelinux 10.0 Official is available!-...*
The public FTP tree of Mandrakelinux 10.0 Official has also started to
appear on mirrors, and public ISO images will be released on early May."

It's the 12th of may and still no sign...

Before anyone says, I was intending to try MDK out and get it working
before I think about becoming a club member.

Thanks for your help.

Alex

Wasn't it just a couple of people that had problems with the political
sigs?

...the usual suspects ;-)

I guess I'm not clear on why anyone would have any political sigs,
right, left, or middle wing, on an OS mailing list. Is Mandrake, or
Linux in general, inherently political? I didn't realize I was making a
political statement when I installed it on my hard drive. Is that stated
some where on their website?

Please, say it ain't so! ;-)
I don't think people choose their sigs according to their mailing lists.
Some use the same sig for everything; others have a random sig. I'm sure
there's some way of automating the sig according to the "To:" field, but
I've never heard of anyone doing it.

As a point of netiquette, I think it's usually a bad idea to comment on
people's sigs in a list (especially if it's a hostile comment, which
will then result in a twenty-message thread). Unless it's on the OT
list, of course ;-)

Open /etc/resolv.conf as root with your favorite editor and you can also
have a look in /etc/hosts so everything is the same on all three boxes

/etc/resolv.conf was different - change them all to match what our router
has and all is well!

But more questions. We have a router with dsl modem here. I use dhcp for
windows clients. I gave each linux machine a static ip so I can do remote
admin. Is there a way to get the ip address of nameservers from the
router, like what would happen with dhcp, but still have static addresses
for the linux machines?

Does no-one have a solution to this nameserver problem? My Linux machines
went down again today - apparently my ISP (sympatico/bell) changed name
servers and the ip addresses that worked yesterday don't work today!

True enough, but keep in mind that Longhorn will be using all these resources
*sitting doing nothing*.

Hell, WinXP uses over 120 MB of RAM just at idle, if you want to do anything as
simple as edit a Word doc, you need at least 256MB of RAM (?!) so yer not left
twiddling yer thumbs.

The difference between Linux and Windows for the hardware requirements, IMO,
depends more on the users needs than the underlying OS. If you are only going to
use your Linux box for basic office functions, an old P2 with 256MB will do it,
NP. Hell, if you are only doin' server stuff, no GUI, an old Pentium will
do, depending on the load you expect. OTOH, Longhorn, from what we are hearing,
won't even *run* without those ruthless specs, let alone do anything useful.
