[newbie] Problem with fortunes, .signature and/or crontab
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Due to an incompatibility between Mozilla Thunderbird's Enigmail encryption extension and the TagZilla tagline extension, I'm dropping TagZilla and going back to using the fortune method. As you can see by the sig (below), there's no fortune currently displaying, and that confuses the heck out of me. I've put my taglines into a %-delimeted file in /usr/share/games/fortunes as a file called myquotes, and have run strfile myquotes to generate the .dat file. That seems fine, near as I can tell. I've got Kcron setup to generate a new .signature file every 5 minutes (I want to change that, too, but need to figure out what else is wrong first) and, indeed, if I manually "run now" with Kcron I get a valid tagline appended to my sig. Each time I run it manually it works just fine. However, after the 5-minute period is up, the signature generated is like the one below (i.e., minus the tagline itself). Maybe I'm just too tired, but I don't see what's wrong here. Here's my file to generate the .signature file for Thunderbird: ~ #bin bash ~ echo "-- " > /home/chuck/.signature ~ echo "Chuck MATTSEN / [EMAIL PROTECTED] / Mahnomen, MN / RLU #346519" |> /home/chuck/.signature ~ echo `cat /etc/mandrake-release` kernel "`uname -r`" >> /home/chuck/.signature ~ echo `uptime` >> /home/chuck/.signature ~ echo " " >> /home/chuck/.signature ~ echo "Random Thought/Quote For This Message: " >> /home/chuck/.signature ~ echo " " `fortune /usr/share/games/fortunes/myquotes` >> /home/chuck/.signature If there were something wrong with my Kcron setup, I could see it /not/ changing, but why would it suddenly go blank after the first instance of a tagline until manually "fired up" again? Travis; Any of the popular Linux distros will provide what you're looking for. A very basic install of Linux ( Mandrake for example ) which includes "bind" and webmin will do the trick. I would suggest that you try your favourite Linux distro, and be sure to include iptables ( shorewall is optional, but a web-based interface is included in webmin for both ), webmin, and possibly a light desktop like ICE just in case you need one. A lot will depend on your server's hardware specs, and anything that you might decide to add later. If you're unfamiliar with webmin, have a look at "www.webmin.com" and keep in mind that it's included with some of the distros, but can also be downloaded and installed for most. I did a repair by popping cd 1 and upgrade same system .. some side effects .. nvidia must be re-istalled .. urpmi in MCC additional sites wiped .. maybe something else I stiil have not discovered. Thanks I've had that happen to me. Basically what you have to do is go find the rpm packages to install yourself by spelunking through ftp and stuff, and install everything package by package. Annoying, but I managed to do it with the help of my friend, and I'm fairly new to all this stuff. From what I was told, urpmi is a fairly simple program, so it just removes what needs to be removed, then installs the new stuff. But when one of the things it removes is one of it's dependencies, it'll remove itself too because it wasn't told ~not~ to. Good luck on getting that rolling. I haven't had a problem with it again since I had to reinstall it the hard way. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Can't Install Mandrake 10
Hi. I have a Compaq Presario 5WV285 with a USB keyboard. It came with Windows Millennium, but I was able to install Mandrake 9.2 next to it without a problem. The only problem I have had is that on occasion it doesnt recognize the keyboard when it boots, and I have to reboot it once or twice before it does. (Weird and totally random.) So, I have been hoping that Mandrake 10 would correct this. However, I have not even been able to even get as far as installing it. (I have the 10.0 Official download version.) As it is loading the installation program into memory I switch the view (using Alt-F3) to see the kernel messages. This way I see that it correctly recognizes my keyboard as a Compaq Internet Keyboard on usb-:14.3-1 A few lines down however, it simply hangs and proceeds no further. The only way it will pick it up is if I restart my computer each time I want to use it. Any help would be appreciated. Debbie Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? You could create your own script with rsync and create include/exclude files and use rsync friendly sites. I have done this in suse 9.0. It is not that complicated once you got the hang of it. here is a example of the rsync command I used in suse.. rsync -auvv --stats --delete --exclude-from=/home/internet/test-ftp/-gwdg-exclude ftp.gwdg.de::pub/linux/suse/ftp.suse.com/suse/i386/update/9.0/. /var/lib/YaST2/you/mnt/i386/update/9.0/. Here is one I use to list kernels..in mdk10.. rsync -auvv --stats --exclude-from=/home/internet/Test-kernels/files-exclude \ ftp.sunet.se::pub/Linux/distributions/mandrakelinux/official/updates/10.0/RPMS/. The ..files-exclude.. look like this.. + kernel-2.6.3*.rpm + kernel-source-2.6.3*.rpm - *.* This may give you some idea what could be done by yourself..but look into dalziel. Ron, Joe: I expect that the author was referring to the large number of updates that had to be downloaded to cure the shortcomings in 9.2 as it was originally released -- missing menus and a goofy urpmi come to mind, but there were others. Not a lot of fun, particularly on a 44K modem line. (Luckily, a very kind soul on the expert list sent me a CDROM containing the then-current updates, otherwise I might still be chugging away at it.) Once it was updated, 9.2 worked very well here. (Well, until about two weeks ago, when something went terribly wrong. Probably a case of engaging the keyboard before my brain was in gear.) Note that if you buy the CD's from Mandrake, as I do, they are current as of the official release date. But it takes Mandrake somewhere on the order of six weeks from the release date until they are actually shipped to the customers. >From what I've seen here, updating 10.0 isn't that big of a deal, so I'll probably order the 10.0 PowerPack this week. RE: [newbie] automatic batch editing of files
Maybe I didn't pay close enough attention, but it looked like you guys were using 'head' and 'tail' to output to a *.txt file leaving the original intact. Yes, the end result IS the important thing. However, not saying exactly what you want to do leads to misinterpretation. Bill > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Mikkel L. Ah, but in your original post you said "remove". None of the suggestions you received removed the lines; they just copied them to a different file. This is kinda like in the status line of some browers where it says "Transfering data from http://www.mydomain.com";. It's not transfering, it's coping. Transfering data implies the removal of the data from the original site after downloading. "Transfering files from the CD". lol Bill > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of magnet > Sent: Tuesday, June 15, 2004 8:46 AM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: Re: [newbie] automatic batch editing of files > > > On Tuesday 15 Jun 2004 9:09 am, Richard Urwin wrote: > > On Tuesday 15 Jun 2004 4:11 am, Mikkel L. Since the # of lines you want to remove are known, I'd suggest using the script, but use 'head' and or 'tail'. Those are designed for this purpose. sed will work too, but is more generalized. But, automation via a for loop is what you're looking at doing. i.e. 'head -17 file.htm' would print all but the first 17 lines of the file. This does not work in 9.2 - it gives you the first 17 lines. Also tail -17 gives you the last 17 lines. Now, tail +17 will give you all but the first 17 lines. Too bad head +17 does not work. Mikkel According to the man page, tail +17 does what you want head +17 to do. Not intuitive. I suggest you re-try the test that you ran above. No, what I wanted from head +17 to do is to give me all but the last 17 lines of the file. The match for the tail +17 command. It doesn't work. When I run "head +2 test.txt" I get: head: +2: No such file or directory test.txt if just a small file with each line containing Line # where # in the line number. I made it for this test... You can mirror the Official files, Community files, Cooker files, ISO Files, and Updates separately. There is also the optional Contrib section, PLF repository, and a few others. If you want pretty much everything, plan on about 16GB. -- Bryan Phinney Software Test Engineer Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] HOW TO: Create Local mirror of main, contrib & updates ??
Hi there, I am attempting to create a local mirror of the main, contrib & updates files (RPMS only, no SRPMS) using 'mirror'. I have so far been unable to get it to download files recursively. I only get the contents of the i586 directory. Here is my config: package=PackageName comment=MyComments go here site=ftp.proxad.net remote_dir=/pub/Distributions_Linux/Mandrakelinux/official/10.0/i586/ local_dir=/path/to/local/mirror/ Recursive=true I suspect it may be a problem with flags_recursive as this is unset so defaults to -lRat. If I ftp manually an do ls -lRat I do just get a list of files in the i586 directory and no-recursion. Has anyone managed to get a local mirror working ?? If so, can you let me know how you achieved this?? (oh and how much disk-space is used) Thanks, Jamie [EMAIL PROTECTED] ITS Internal Extension : 5806 Direct Dial: 0870 754 5806 ** E-mail Disclaimer ** This e-mail message is confidential and for use by the addressee only. Thanks to all that helped. cd to the directory containing the files to be converted, then issue this command: tail +5 original_file.htm >> new_filename.txt Worked a treat, so I will be making back-ups first just in case and running Mikkels' script. magnet :) Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Problems with accents.
Open /etc/samba/smb.conf and uncomment the lines relative to internationalization. Here's how my look like after the change: # Enabling internationalization: # you can match a Windows code page with a UNIX character set. # Windows: 437 (US), 737 (GREEK), 850 (Latin1 - Western European), # 852 (Eastern Eu.), 861 (Icelandic), 932 (Cyrillic - Russian), # 936 (Japanese - Shift-JIS), 936 (Simpl. Chinese), 949 (Korean Hangul), # 950 (Trad. Chin.). # UNIX: ISO8859-1 (Western European), ISO8859-2 (Eastern Eu.), # ISO8859-5 (Russian Cyrillic), KOI8-R (Alt-Russ. Cyril.) # This is an example for french users: dos charset = 850 unix charset = ISO8859-1 By default (i.e. after installation) the last two lines are commented out, just uncomment them and restart the samba server. raffaele Flávio Henrique wrote: hi guys. Re: [newbie] Good Mandrake Linux Book
Hi, I've found that many of the O'Rielly's books are very good, and also the "dummies" guides some may laugh at them, but I think they are great! Using the net is a wonderful resource too. cheers, ali --- Hoyt Bailey <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > On Tuesday 15 June 2004 03:49, OOzy wrote: > > Anybody can recommend a good Mandrake Linux Book > or at least a good > general > > Linux book? > > > > > > > > > try rute.pdf > -- > Regards; > Hoyt > > > > Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? > > Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com > Join the Club : http://www.mandrakeclub.com > > Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
