[newbie] Updating 10.0
I apologize for this question but I can not figure out how to update my newly installed Mandrake 10.0. The Mandrake Updates Applet in the lower right corner tells me there are no updates available. It seems from what I have read that there have been updates since the 10.0 ISo files were released. What am I not doing or what am I doing wrong? frankieh wrote: Asa Rossoff wrote: From: "OOzy" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> From: "Asa Rossoff" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> .. Which of the scripted languages run fastest, and which use ram most efficiently? The languages I know (just) a bit about are Perl, Python, and Tcl. It really depends on personal preference. PHP is popular and rich. I don't know about Perl, Python and Tcl. I think these languages are for gurus. If I were you I will go for PHP. I have some past programming experience, and am not afraid of a challenge for something worthwhile. My impression is that the currently popular and modern backends for web work are PHP and Python. Is PHP meant to be used outside of web work? You can write PHP scritps for admin stuff, but they are slow... the only reason PHP is fast is because it runs inside the web server, (like mod_perl) PHP is not really good for admin stuff, it was never designed to be used like that. Perl was, in fact a good many of the install screens and tools you saw on install of Mandrake were Perl scripts, and so are some of the tools you use to maintain the box. I use Perl for large scale web apps. (using a framework and templating system like CGI::Application and HTML::Template) and I also use a ton of small admin scripts to do backend stuff on the boxes. Python is cool, but I don't know it all that well, Perl is far an away my favorite scripting language, and a look around search.cpan.org will show you why. One thing I like about Perl is its versatility. Although it rose to fame as a text manipulation tool, as franki points out, the vast number of modules available these days means that you can use it for almost anything (well, anything you can use a scripting language for - I've not heard of anyone writing a lightning-fast first-person shooter in Perl). Note that although Tk tends to be associated with Tcl, it also works well in Perl. There are other good scripting languages as well; I'm not knocking Python or Ruby, but Perl has the advantages of thousands of dedicated hackers working on it for well over a decade now. It's like the C of scripting languages. Sir Robin -- "I'm very into Britney Spears' early work, before she sold out, so mostly her, um, finger painting and macaroni art." Sounds to me like you have run into a bug that Mandrake, as well as Fedora and a few others also experience. I think it is a bug in LILO. It has to do with the LBA settings in the BIOS. The bug mostly manifests itself in not being able to boot into windows after installing into a dual-boot scenario. There has been a lot of talk on the net about this, so google should help you out here. Also, you may want to try turning off LBA in the BIOS. Here's a link to the article about it on Slashdot http://slashdot.org/articles/04/05/23/1448209.shtml?tid=110&tid=187 -- I have been on the verge of installing 10.0 powerpack then I heard about this problem. I spent a good part of yesterday googling and reading various forums. From what I found this problem seems to be related to the 2.6 kernel and the way it handles CHS info from the bios and messes with partition tables that causes them to be unreadable by a MS FAT or NTFS system. This problem is found in Fedora, SuSE and Mandrake versions that use a 2.6 kernel. A lot of people when first hearing of this problem automatically think it is a MBR problem, but it goes deeper than that and none of the variations of fdisk /mbr will help. From what I have read it seems that will most likely occur if any partition changes are made and the partition tables are re-written and if your drive detection in bios is set to auto. It has been stated that sometimes changing the bios setting to LBA will correct the problems as long as the tables and MBR haven't been further messed up with repair attempt with all the various utilities. I have also heard, but not verified, that kernel version 2.6.7 fixes that bug but that is a much later version than the one in the current iso's and boxed versions. So far the best course seems to change bios setting to LBA, and do not make any changes to partition tables until you can upgrade your kernel version. The sad part is that none of the distro developers seem to be taking this bug seriously. You will find no mention of it at any of the home pages. I guess since none of the developer types dual boot they don't think it is a major bug. In fact a reply from one jerk said just put your Windows an a separate box, like everyone can have a house full spare computers. . Well, you should do that from within Windows partition with the help of disk partitioner software (such as Paragon or Partition Magic). Unless you can make the corrections in fstab and bootloader. Yeah, that's where I stopped the process before :-), when I started getting advisories about primary partitions, as I can't afford to mess up my XP install (much as I'd like to wipe it, I need it for work on a daily basis), and the info I was getting was sufficiently cryptic/over my head that I didn't dare go further at that point. I have Partition Magic and, in fact, it's what I originally used to set up the dual boot. Subsequent to that, however, it began balking at any attempt to resize/reallocate anything further, saying it had "found errors," etc., and I felt (and was also advised) it would be wise to /not/ let Partition Magic "fix" them, as it offered. I also /do/ have Partition Manager, which seems to be better able to handle dealing with a mixed NTFS/ext3 environment. I guess I'm confused about the distinction (if there is one) between partitions, primary partitions, logical drives, etc. As for the partition numbering, I was hoping that if it was done from within Mandrake that it would be taken care of, but am certainly willing to manually edit, should that be a necessity. Partition numbering is a combination of fixed and variable numbering. The primary partitions are always 1 through 4, and are independent of the logical partitions created in the extended partitions. Extended partitions are a special type of primary partition that define a chunck of disk space that is then broken up into smaller logical partitions. You can have a total of 4 primary partitions and extended partitions. ( 0P, 4E or 1P, 3E or 2P, 2E or 3P, 1E or 4P, 0E) Each extended partition can have 4 logical partitions. (This is if you are going to have a DOS type partition table - there are other formats, but windows doesn't like them.) I dunno ... I'm sure it's all obvious to those who've been around the Linux "block" a few times, but in my many years on the Windows side of things I've never had to do any partitioning or similar -- indeed, I never even once had to do an OS reinstall, as things remained stable throughout the various upgrades to 98se. This new system came with XP Pro preloaded, and I'm much less familiar in that environment. The "correct" way to do it is to create a second extended partition using the free space, and then create a logical drive in it. I do not have enough experience with XP to know if it will handle having a FAT32 primary partition, along with a NTFS primary partition. I know Windows 95 and 98 would handle having 2 primary partitions, even though you are not supposed to do it. Before you start changing things, would you send the output o

[newbie] NFS server = how?
Gentle folks, The other day I tried to install Mdk 9.1, using a NFS server installation (Windows 2000 Server machine, running haneWin NFS server 1.1.29). Seems that Windows NFS server is OK and Mdk setup recognizes it, but later I get the following error message on the Linux machine: Error: That NFS volume does not seem to contain the Mandrake Linux distribution. and when type Alt-F4: <4>NFS Warning: Mount version older than kernel That is what I get when trying to use NFS network installation. Btw, the same Windows 2000 box is very good for FTP or HTTP installations of Linux (I mean my LAN is fine), but now I can not use either FTP or HTTP because on the target box I do not have enough RAM for FTP or HTTP setup (don't ask me why, the target box uses proprietary memory chips etc). Looks that the target box recognizes the NFS server at the first step of NFS installation, but a bit later something goes wrong. The second message <4>NFS Warning: Mount version older than kernel looks to me as if Mdk 9.1 kernel differs from haneWin NFS server 1.1.29 capabilities. Any idea how to solve that issue? Maybe some other NFS utility for Windows that is compatible with Mdk 9.1 ? Btw, due to having the old hardware I am not going to try installing anything newer than Mdk 9.1 Misko Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Previously, I had pared down the size of the XP partition, so that my current allocation is as follows: XP Pro NTFShda114 GB unassigned -- -- 9.7 GB / ext3hda55.8 GB swap -- hda60.5 GB /home ext3hda76.5 GB I'd like to make the currently unassigned drive space (or most of it, anyway) a FAT32 shared data partition, but want to make sure that I understand the procedure -- and any potential problem areas -- before I attempt it, as I'd /like/ to leave the current installation and data intact, rather than doing so via a wipe/reinstall. So, questions: (Feel free to dumb down your answers to the appropriate level of understanding ... i.e., you can't go /too/ low :-), as you can no doubt tell by the questions themselves.) 1. Am I correct in assuming that, because Windows flavors tend not to play well with others, that the formatting/assignment of the free space to FAT32 should be done from within Mandrake, or not? If so, would I then have trouble getting XP to recognize it. 2. Regardless of where the operation is performed, the drive assignments (currently hda5-7) would end up getting renumbered, correct? If so, will Mdk handle this automatically, or need I be prepared to do some manual editing of config files? 3. Running a laptop, and having run into a failed resume cycle yesterday, I'm thinking the fail may have been due to the resume data being written to the current swap partition? If so, would it then make sense to take some relatively small amount of that free space and set it aside for such purpose. What I probably really need is a detailed step-by-step before I'm comfortable performing this, but I certainly don't expect anyone here to go to such lengths. So, if anyone has a pointer to a really //basic// step-by-step, a link would be appreciated. All I've found so far is either not Mandrake-specific or details only part of the procedure/concept. Re: [newbie] Most efficient, fastest scripting language...
Asa Rossoff wrote: From: "OOzy" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> From: "Asa Rossoff" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> .. -- rgds Frank Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] LILO
Teilhard Knight wrote: Can you think any reason why Mandrake 10.0 Community, and also the Official, report that there is a sector of 80 Gb, and another sector of 891 !! Gb overlapping? I had a similar experience recently and had to do a Low level format to rid a corupt partition table , my problem was due to using the drive size limiter jumper on the HD itself, but I suspect disckdrake can cause similar problems when used on a HD originally partitioned with windows apps like PM8, or dos fdisk. This is controversial in linux, but I know that some other linux users I know have experienced something similar to that which you describe. That is why this is off list. I have kept tothe use of windblows apps to partition my dual boot /linux/windblows HD's for quite some time and not had this trouble myself, but as I say I have had to help sort our other folks problems of a similar nature. When I installed the Official for a second time, I got a worse thing saying that the partition table was too messy for Mandrake. I trusted the offer to fix the problem and I went to the dogs with 4 OSs installed in my 120 Gb disk. It even disappeared from the BIOS. I do not want to tire you with what I did to fix this. I have checked now possible problems in the partition table with different tools, and there are none. Trouble is they don't always show the corrupt nature of the partition table. It all may look OK but there are sectors in the MBR that can store bad data, yet not be read by these apps.I certainly don't have enough professional knowledge to say what that currupt data may be but the consequencies can be awful. I am now trying to install and at the end LILO fails to install everywhere, so I cannot boot. What on earth is going on? Teilhard Recently , that is to say MD10 has come with a version of lilo that cannot work with any other bios setting other than LBA, and refuses to boot any other OS other than the installed MD10, but changing the setting to LBA in bios rectifies that, and so I doubt it is likely to be your problem. This is only a pure guess but it sounds like a corrupt partition table in the MBR and somehow you have to re-establish a new partition table from the beginning. That means a full Low Level Format (LLF) Have you ever done a LLf before. There are HD manufacturer utilities to help you do that. my maxtor has one called powermax which is very intuitive. One last thought , just an outside possibility, so I need to ask, you don't have an external card reader or camera or some other mass storage device plugged in ? I have know these give faulse partition table readings sometimes, and the solution is to remove them until after you are done, just a thought. I don't know if this is of any help to you, since without actually experiencing it myself it is hard to be certain what the nature of your problem is but maybe it gives you some ideas. Corrupt partition tables can be a trial sometimes, and if you return to a normal partition table setup I would stick to a windblows app to do the partitioning. It doesn't matter what app does the formatting, but when the MD10 install disc looks to find partitions it is better it finds what you wants already made by another device. Before Mandrake had diskdrake they used to offer PM as their choice of windblows app. regards, John -- John Richard Smith [EMAIL PROTECTED] Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
