larger scale operations, like on web servers and heavy data analysis.
I used to write Perl stuff on a similar machine. Compared with the
amount of memory something like OpenOffice eats, any script you write in
any language will have a minimal impact on system resources. You'd
probably only notice the difference if you were using the box as a web
server running data-crunching CGI applications that turned out to be
popular enough to have a number of people accessing them at the same
time, or if you use humunguous arrays or hashes (for example if you
write a program that involves putting every definition in the Oxford
English Dictionary into a hash, then don't expect to get your search
results quickly!).
If you decide to go for Perl, mail me off list and I'll give you some
pointers (well Perl usually calls them references - "pointers" is more
of a C thing ;-)). I'm not an expert, just a guy who uses it for simple
practical applications, but that's probably an advantage.
BTW, I'm not trying to start a Perl/Python war here. Apart from anything
else, if we get going on that, those weirdo Ruby hackers will join in ;-)

ha :)
Okay, I may take you up on that. *Adds your email to address book*
In the long run, it would clearly be a good idea to learn Perl no matter
what, since it is so widely used, and so many modules and scripts are out
there for it already.
I haven't tried the cpan script from Linux yet -- but when I used it to
install some modules under Windows, I was surprised to see it consume nearly
30 mb of paged-in ram. This was one thing that made me question whether
Perl is good with ram usage.
It's probably because the cpan script is doing quite a lot. You can eat
a lot of RAM with Perl if you want (e.g. by looping through massive
arrays) but the kind of programs you'd be liekly to write should be
fairly economical.

Derek,

Sorry if this seems tedious, I write something and then forget I needed
to add something. I noticed that when I changed only the owner of the
privoxy directory to daemon and all the files ownership under privoxy to
daemon I was able to start up privoxy using:

/etc/init.d/privoxy start

with no complaints. Should all the files under privoxy be daemon.daemon
as well.

Thanks again,

As an addition to this, I went back to the original
fstab(listed way at the top) and rebooted. I then had
the same results.

What does one do when their cd-rw does not mount
reliably? I don't believe it is a hardware problem
since this is a dual boot with win2k and it works
great there.

Run /usr/bin/kwalletmanager then open kwallet from the icon in the system tray
and you will be able to access the configuration settings and un-enable

Not sure if this helps, this is in MD10,
After fiddling around for ages, I gave up on supermount in general, and
went back to automount like this,
/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto
umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec 0 0
/dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom2 auto
umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto user,iocharset=iso8859
/dev/fd1 /mnt/floppy2 auto user,iocharset=iso8859

I left this as it is, not knowing what it does for you,
none /mnt/hd supermount
dev=/dev/scsi/host2/bus0/target0/lun0/part1,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-15,kudzu,codepage=850
0 0

then mount -a
I also ran,
supermount disable /mnt/cdrom
supermount disable /mnt/cdrom2
supermount disable /mnt/floppy
supermount disable /mnt/floppy2
not sure if it did anything, but all seems reasonably stable, except
occassionally the floppies don't umount reliably and I have to resort to
logging out and in to clear it.

I will probably get flamed for saying this, but the Microsoft MN-520
works with Mandrake 9.2, and I would think 10.0 I think it also works
with XP. ;) On the other hand, it doesn't exactly work 'out of the

that the proper driver is loaded for the card. If they have any left,
Office Max was closing them out for less then $20.
