Marek If the machine is not running hot, then I would check the power supply. You may also want to check the line voltage feeding the machine. You may need to get a UPS for it, just to handle voltage dips. Sometime just putting is a larger power supply will do the trick. I had to add a small UPS to my two of my sisters' machines. One would reboot or lock up every time the AC kicked in, and the other would have problems every time the silo unloader or bulk tank compressor would start... Re[2]: [newbie] The Most Popular Programming Language in Linux
JW> It's the best tool for the best job. In many cases the best combination of JW> tools, in fact. This is a good point. One of the great things about free (as in freedom) software is the ability to stitch things together. For instance, I needed a way to track cisco router configuration changes without springing the $$$ for Ciscoworks. So I took RANCID (a C/Perl/Expect program that collects configs and stores them in CVS), and tied it to Chora (a PHP-based CVS viewer). A little tweaking here and there, and I had a program that would automatically download configs and give me a very nice web-based interface to track those configurations (and notify me by email if certain things had changed). Picking a programming language is like picking a religion. There may be some merits for one over the other in certain areas, but they are all trying in general to accomplish the same thing. __ Justin Grote Network Architect, CCNA The Whistlepunk Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (remove nospam-) SMS: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (remove nospam-) Phone: (208) 631-5440 smime.p7s Description: S/MIME Cryptographic Signature

True, URPMI isn't very good at handling multiple mirrors of the same information, but as long as you have a good reliable mirror (mirrors.secsup.org is my personal favorite from Idaho) it works real well. I would suggest trying urpmi --wget. Wget is much better at "retries" then curl is. Otherwise, I've had no problems with urpmi not being able to find a package. If worse comes to worse you can simply download the RPM and then type urpmi , and it will install it and still try to handle any dependencies from your mirrors. You can always try apt-RPM or YUM (yellow-dog update manager) if URPMI irritiates you too much. I really like YUM for my non-mandrake RPM-based systems. I think SuSE has GPL'd YaST as well. Hi Joe, VMWare is looking for the kernel source files for your kernel so it can compile against it and install a driver. My guess is you didn't install the sources, so VMWare can't find what it's trying to compile against. You have to install the source files for your current kernel. You should just be able to type (at the console): urpmi kernel-source and it will get your kernel source files for you. If you installed from CD, it will ask you for one of the Mandrake CDs (2 I think). Then run the VMWare configure program again and it should work :). If not, post the new version of the error that I copied above and we'll try again :) __ Justin Grote Network Architect, CCNA JWG Networks smime.p7s Description: S/MIME Cryptographic Signature

In the four years or so I've been a newbie, I haven't been this frustrated. What's really a pain is that I don't really like oo but I'm pretty hardheaded. I have added every club mirror, made sure that they were enabled one at a time, and did a rpmi.update -a --wget && urpmi -v --auto-select --wget All updates were installed except oo, which was listed. I went through the same process with each mirror, one at a time, with the same result. I don't expect to be spoon fed and in fact enjoy a meaningful challenge, but can't stand stupidity from myself or anyone else. I don't understand why urpmi can't be configured to recognize it's own failure and move to the next mirror on my list and try there. My two hour venture in futility could have been reduced to a simple, "Oh well, looks like oo isn't available right now." and gone on to something less exasperating. If you need to write an engine that has to be really fast, C is "close to the machine" and tends to perform better. If you want to automate a boring task and use a quick and easy language, BASH shell scripting, Perl or PHP CLI work well. If you want object-oriented features and flexibility, Java or Python is usually the way to go. Again, I have my own preferences, but there are lots of great languages that are useful in their own right. For instance, I do most of my stuff in PHP and Perl because I mostly just write network scripts that use SNMP or automate other boring tasks, and I like something thats fast to develop in. Thats just me. [newbie] only about 1/2 my hard drive is recognised
Hi, I just had a Maxtor Ultra Series 250 GB hard drive installed as a slave. The box says it operates at 7200 RPM. It also says Ultra ATA/133. Mandrake 10.0 recognizes it but it only shows about 129 GB. The installation guide lists certain ATA cards that will only recognize 137 GB but the Ultra ATA 133 is not listed as having that restriction. Anybody else using this drive? Does anyone have any clues why this is happening? Thanks for your help. Eric Jackson [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If the latter, then any Linux mail client has the capability. If you want to run a POP3 server, then you will also need to run a mail server such as Postfix. There are a few POP3 servers available. the most popular is the 'imap-2000c' package which does POP3 and IMAP. Just install it using the software install GUI. Personally I prefer courier-imap and courier-imap-pop because it can use different username/passwords to users regular Linux logins. Courier-imap is set up by text files in /etc/courier Neither of these packages will provide you with a webmail function. For that you will need squirrelmail which itself depends on an Apache web server with php. All of these things are on your CDs. You can have months of fun trying to get your head around it :-) HTH derek Note: There is a page on my website about setting up a mail server. -- www.jennings.homelinux.net http://twiki.mdklinuxfaq.org Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? EE wrote: Hi all, What is the most popular langauge that linux gurus are using to make programs under linux? Is it C, C++, Python, Tcl, etc? What kind of programming you are talking about? The Linux kernel is written in C. Most big applications are written in C or C++. Python and Perl are popular for smaller applications (see the recent thread on scripting languages). Then of course there's Java, which is a world unto itself. It all depends on what you want to do - you can compare the relative merits of, say, Perl and Python, but you can't really compare Perl and C. So usually there will be a 'back end' function which operates on the command line such as 'Bind' and a 'front-end' GUI to manage it. In this case I would suggest webmin which is a browser based GUI for managing all sorts of things in your Linux system. If you install the drakwizard package using the Software Install GUI in your Mandrake Control Centre, then the next time you start the Control Centre you will see a new section titled 'Server Wizards' There is a Wizard in there which will install Bind for you. (actually you could just install Bind from the software install GUI, but I wanted you to see all the other wizards available) Then install webmin and in the 'System>Services> section of Mandrake Control Centre start the webmin service. Then in any browser on your local net https://ip_add_of_linux_box:1 Or https://localhost:1 if using a local browser. (Note https NOT http) Webmin has a section to manage Bind. As you become familiar with Linux you will realise that all configuration is by English text files and all the GUI does is write text into the file. -- www.jennings.homelinux.net http://twiki.mdklinuxfaq.org Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
