Check the power supply fan, is it running? If not that will cause the reboot.
Just replaced a power supply for that reason, sucker got hot enough that it
failed shortly after I replaced the fan.

Sounds like a heat issue; you might want to get all the dust blown out
of the inside of the box - especially in the power supply - then see how
it goes from that point on.

If the machine is not running hot, then I would check the power supply.
You may also want to check the line voltage feeding the machine. You
may need to get a UPS for it, just to handle voltage dips. Sometime
just putting is a larger power supply will do the trick.

I had to add a small UPS to my two of my sisters' machines. One would
reboot or lock up every time the AC kicked in, and the other would have
problems every time the silo unloader or bulk tank compressor would start...

Hi Mikkel

Im new to Linux and Mandrake and was wondering what you would
reccomend for a DNS service (BIND for example), just to host 3
domains we have (and just the main internet accessable systems -
i.e. 3 IPs/Names). Prefer to have a GUI if possible, if not a url
to a good reference point

Thanks in advance
Cheers
Mark :-)
Mark, Are you looking for a name server to provide domain name
service for your local network, or one that will provide name
service for your domain on the Internet? From the way your
question is worded, I want to be sure we are talking about the same
thing. What you need for a home network with 3 hosts is vastly
different then what you need if you are running a hosting service
and have 3 different domains to worry about.

I should have been clearer, a DNS to provide naming services for
internet based computers looking up our domain names, not for
internal network.

You say you are new to Linux. Are you new to networking as well,
or just to networking on Linux? I want to be sure we are we mean
the same thing when we talk about domains, and host names.

Not new to networking, just networking on linux. At the moment Im
looking for something to get me up and running quickly, so I can
later study what script/conf files where altered and where. (Im sully
aware that any front end GUI's change up to several
configuration/text files to allow linux to do its stuff :-) Just
looking for pointers so Im not wasting time simply looking ;-)
In that case, you probably want to install bind, and webmin. Webmin has
nice modules for configuring just about anything using a web interface.
I am a b it old fashioned, so I tent to edit config files, but I have
set it up for others to use...

Yes eventually. Thats why I have a sort of 'homemade' domain. I edited
main.cf changing everything over to localhost.localdomain. But I'd
prefer to eventually set it up to use my local mailserver with fetchmail

There is an option for urpmi.addmedia

-f Force generation of hdlist files.

Wow, I can't believe I missed that -f option in the man page. Yep, it worked just fine
for me locally too. I'll have to try it remotely.

Thanks for the tip! I should add that to the wiki if I can get it to work over FTP and

Re[2]: [newbie] The Most Popular Programming Language in Linux

2004-07-04 Thread Justin Grote

JW> It's the best tool for the best job. In many cases the best combination of
JW> tools, in fact.

This is a good point. One of the great things about free (as in freedom) software is
the ability to stitch things together. For instance, I needed a way to track cisco
router configuration changes without springing the $$$ for Ciscoworks. So I took
RANCID (a C/Perl/Expect program that collects configs and stores them in CVS), and
tied it to Chora (a PHP-based CVS viewer). A little tweaking here and there, and I had
a program that would automatically download configs and give me a very nice web-based
interface to track those configurations (and notify me by email if certain things had
changed).

Picking a programming language is like picking a religion. There may be some merits
for one over the other in certain areas, but they are all trying in general to
accomplish the same thing.

I'm ranting about:

OpenOffice.org-1.1-2.92mdk.i586
OpenOffice.org-l10n-en-1.1-2.92mdk.i586
OpenOffice.org-libs-1.1-2.92mdk.i586

All of which are on the lists for 9.2 but not available to urpmi.

I know, dl and install.

Rather bitch about it.

True, URPMI isn't very good at handling multiple mirrors of the same information, but
as long as you have a good reliable mirror (mirrors.secsup.org is my personal favorite
from Idaho) it works real well.

I would suggest trying urpmi --wget. Wget is much better at "retries" then curl is.

Otherwise, I've had no problems with urpmi not being able to find a package. If worse
comes to worse you can simply download the RPM and then type urpmi ,
and it will install it and still try to handle any dependencies from your mirrors.

You can always try apt-RPM or YUM (yellow-dog update manager) if URPMI irritiates you
too much. I really like YUM for my non-mandrake RPM-based systems. I think SuSE has
GPL'd YaST as well.

Freedom of choice, baby.

Hi Joe,

VMWare is looking for the kernel source files for your kernel so it can compile
against it and install a driver. My guess is you didn't install the sources, so VMWare
can't find what it's trying to compile against. You have to install the source files
for your current kernel. You should just be able to type (at the console):

urpmi kernel-source

and it will get your kernel source files for you. If you installed from CD, it will
ask you for one of the Mandrake CDs (2 I think).

Then run the VMWare configure program again and it should work :). If not, post the
new version of the error that I copied above and we'll try again :)

Yes, one of the things that annoys me about urpmi is that the hdlist.cz has to be
present, whereas with YUM (yellow Dog Update Manager), you can use any directory full
of RPMS and it will build the hdlist automatically, so the mirror doesn't have to
maintain an hdlist. Not that big of a deal, but it sure would be nice to, for
instance, add Florin's Mandrake Network Firewall cooker to urpmi, but I can't since it
doesn't have an hdlist :)

Ok, now that I think about it, I went to club downloads and chose Club contrib
and then 10.0 and found OO. Then picked a server and used the urpmi setup for
the server I chose, which was one of the French servers I believe. I pasted
the urpmi.addmedia line into a su console and let it update that server and
then did urpmi OO.org and got it. You might try that just for giggles. HTH

Personally I preffer downloading all things manually and then installing them,
so I got my OpenOffice.org 1.1.2 from

Sorry no. I'm using K3b 0.11.6cvs and it works perfectly fine... You should

The story so far:

I used drakfont to try to add a new font. Drakfont crashed. Now
X doesn't start anymore, and I only get this error message:

could not open default font 'fixed'

Any ideas how I can fix this?

[newbie] OpenOffice and Club mirror Rant

2004-07-04 Thread Lee Wiggers
In the four years or so I've been a newbie, I haven't been this
frustrated. What's really a pain is that I don't really like oo but
I'm pretty hardheaded.

I have added every club mirror, made sure that they were enabled one
at a time, and did a rpmi.update -a --wget && urpmi -v --auto-select
--wget

All updates were installed except oo, which was listed. I went
through the same process with each mirror, one at a time, with the
same result.

I don't expect to be spoon fed and in fact enjoy a meaningful
challenge, but can't stand stupidity from myself or anyone else.

I don't understand why urpmi can't be configured to recognize it's
own failure and move to the next mirror on my list and try there.

My two hour venture in futility could have been reduced to a simple,
"Oh well, looks like oo isn't available right now." and gone on to
something less exasperating.

Guarantee a newbi newbi would have just assumed mdk was a screwup
and gone on to another distro or back to the evil empire.

FWIW

Lee

Did you call your machine myhouse.net? If so, that explains the strange

did not put that is your Postfix config file, then you have real
problems! myhouse.net does sound like something that a person would use
for their home system. But as you can see, using a host name that is a
belongs to a "real" domain can cause problems...

Hmmm
Your mail header includes the line
Message-Id: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

tbox.blrm.myhouse.net resolves to 220.80.108.83 which is a block belonging to
an ISP in Korea. It does not seem likely that someone in the US would use a
Korean ISP, but how is that line getting into your email headers?

It looks like your Postfix config file may have been tampered with to turn you
into a spam relay.

Ooops,

I figured it out. I think? I had changed my machine hostname, but
didn't update main.cf to reflect that. postfix is up and running. But
I'm still curious, why would I get a message from that ip? Is someone
using my box as a spam relay? Can someone tell what to check in my logs

Whoops, Sorry about that, we can't help ourselves, can we?

At the console you'll want to type:

urpmi emacs-w3

and then just type emacs-w3 to fire it up.

emacs-w3 is a web browser written in the eLisp language, which is what emacs was
written in.

I personally would recommend Lynx, Links, or eLinks for a text-based web browser. You
can get any of these simply with:

urpmi lynx
urpmi links
urpmi elinks

I personally prefer elinks because it has table support.

Don't forget to reply to the list ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), not the sender (justin at grote

su to root in console, type "vmware-config.pl" and follow the
instructions carefully. As I recall, you have to have your
kernel-source installed before you do this. I usually keep the
VMWare man handy but the questions are pretty clear.

It's just like Windows or any other OS, you use the right tool for the right job. If
you need to write an engine that has to be really fast, C is "close to the machine"
and tends to perform better.

If you want to automate a boring task and use a quick and easy language, BASH shell
scripting, Perl or PHP CLI work well.

If you want object-oriented features and flexibility, Java or Python is usually the
way to go.

Again, I have my own preferences, but there are lots of great languages that are
useful in their own right. For instance, I do most of my stuff in PHP and Perl because
I mostly just write network scripts that use SNMP or automate other boring tasks, and
I like something thats fast to develop in. Thats just me.

However, depending on your goal, as always, YMMV (your Mileage may vary)

[newbie] only about 1/2 my hard drive is recognised

2004-07-04 Thread eric jackson

Hi,

I just had a Maxtor Ultra Series 250 GB hard drive
installed as a slave. The box says it operates at 7200 RPM. It also says Ultra
ATA/133.

Mandrake 10.0 recognizes it but it only shows about
129 GB. The installation guide lists certain ATA cards that will only recognize
137 GB but the Ultra ATA 133 is not listed as having that
restriction.

Anybody else using this drive? Does anyone have any
clues why this is happening?

Thanks for your help.

2004-07-04 Thread Terence Golightly
List,

Postfix has quit working and I suspect someone has broken in, but I
don't know where to begin looking on my system. Below is an attempt to
start postfix:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] root]# postfix start
postfix: fatal: parameter inet_interfaces: no local interface found for
220.80.108.83

I have included a run of nampfe at the end. In the meantime,
I was barely able to setup postfix to supply me with system emails, so
your basic help with how/where do I look to fix this problem is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Terry

p.s. If I have been hacked by the ip above, what can I do (shorewall/other) to
keep them out.

Mark,
Are you looking for a name server to provide domain name service for
your local network, or one that will provide name service for your
domain on the Internet? From the way your question is worded, I want to
be sure we are talking about the same thing. What you need for a home
network with 3 hosts is vastly different then what you need if you are
running a hosting service and have 3 different domains to worry about.

You say you are new to Linux. Are you new to networking as well, or
just to networking on Linux? I want to be sure we are we mean the same

none /mnt/removable supermount
dev=/dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,kudzu,codepage=850
0 0

sen är det bara att klicka på ikonen så startar konq, och du kan hämta dina
bilder som om det vore en del av disken

Do you mean you want to run a Pop3 server?, or do you hust want to read emails
from your ISPs Pop3 server? If the latter, then any Linux mail client has the
capability.

If you want to run a POP3 server, then you will also need to run a mail server
such as Postfix.

There are a few POP3 servers available. the most popular is the 'imap-2000c'
package which does POP3 and IMAP. Just install it using the software install
GUI.

Personally I prefer courier-imap and courier-imap-pop because it can use
different username/passwords to users regular Linux logins.
Courier-imap is set up by text files in /etc/courier

Neither of these packages will provide you with a webmail function. For that
you will need squirrelmail which itself depends on an Apache web server with
php.
All of these things are on your CDs. You can have months of fun trying to get
your head around it :-)

Linux/Unix systems usually break functions up onto small units which can be
combined to gether. So usually there will be a 'back end' function which
operates on the command line such as 'Bind' and a 'front-end' GUI to manage
it. In this case I would suggest webmin which is a browser based GUI for
managing all sorts of things in your Linux system.

If you install the drakwizard package using the Software Install GUI in your
Mandrake Control Centre, then the next time you start the Control Centre you
will see a new section titled 'Server Wizards'
There is a Wizard in there which will install Bind for you.
(actually you could just install Bind from the software install GUI, but I
wanted you to see all the other wizards available)

Then install webmin and in the 'System>Services> section of Mandrake Control
Centre start the webmin service.

Then in any browser on your local net
https://ip_add_of_linux_box:1
Or https://localhost:1 if using a local browser.

(Note https NOT http)
Webmin has a section to manage Bind.

As you become familiar with Linux you will realise that all configuration is
by English text files and all the GUI does is write text into the file.

The easiest way is to use http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/, there you can
set-up all the needed sources other than mine.

Charles
Hi Y'all,
Just given my urpmi settings a thorough spring clean, added the full
complement of source (including yours, Charles) and installed the latest
xfce4. I now seem to have the full range of menus, icons (though file
manager doesn't seem to be working this time) and settings.

Thanks to everybody who helped, especially Charles, whose site is an
invaluable resource for all Mandrake users.

Cheers,

[newbie] DNS Server

2004-07-04 Thread Mark Rogers
Hi Team

Im new to Linux and Mandrake and was wondering what you would reccomend for a DNS
service (BIND for example), just to host 3 domains we have (and just the main internet
accessable systems - i.e. 3 IPs/Names). Prefer to have a GUI if possible, if not a url
to a good reference point

Thanks in advance

Cheers

Mark :-)

[newbie] Best POP Server?

2004-07-04 Thread Mark Rogers
Hi Team

Im new to Linux and Mandrake and need to ask what is the best email Post Office
deamon/program that you would recomend?

Im looking for something thats easy to setup (i.e. with a GUI), secure, can handle
IMAP, and maybe even a web interface for reading emails via the web.

Suggestions?

Oh, also a url to the suggested system. (Knowing my luck its on the Mandrake 10 disks
I have lol )

Thanks in advance

Cheers

Mark :-)
