KDE and i'm guessing that all of mandrakes configuration tools use the
KDE (or QT) libraries.

Maybe I'm stepping in too late on this, but once the machine APPEARS as
to have completed it's bootup process (when the hard drive is no longer
spinning or making noise) have you tried hitting CTRL+ALT+F2 ??? You
SHOULD see a "console login" when you do that - mind you SHOULD is the
key word here.

I saw you mentioned something about NVidia, but you didn't list it in
your machine's inventory in the previous message - do you, in fact, HAVE
an NVidia card?

If so, and IF you can get to a console login, you can login as root,
then at the prompt type:

cd /etc/X11

then type:

vi XF86Config-4

...and once the editor has loaded, locate the section for the video
driver - if it lists nv instead of nvidia, you're going to have to
change it; so while in the editor, you hit the INSERT key, then navigate
to the line you want to change, change it (from nv to nvidia) then hit
the ESC key, then hit : then wq => that will save it...then when back at
the prompt, type "reboot" and watch.

Now, there COULD be an issue with the monitor settings - that could be

xinetd is an enhanced version of inetd (internet daemon), which is basically a wrapper
for other internet daemons. You can use xinetd to run FTP, BIND, Apache, etc.

The benefit as opposed to standalone is that since everything goes through xinetd, you
can tweak it more. Xinetd allows you to customize network utilization, set priorities
for certain daemons, and tons of other crap.

If you're a desktop user (or even a small server operator), its usually better to run
everything in standalone. However, for larger scale stuff xinetd is invaluable to
allocating resources.

I guess you could somewhat think of it as "nice" (the program) for networking, but the
analogy breaks down from there :)

Re: [newbie] switching from fedora core, need some advice

2004-07-10 Thread Justin Grote
Hi Chris! Welcome to Mandrake. I've been a Fedora user too, and I think you'll come to
find that Mandrake gives you great consumer flexibility, while being a very powerful
server as well. It's not better than any other linux distro, just different (as they
all are).

I'll take your questions 1 at a time:

Does mandrake have anything like yum? what is package
CJB> management like and where can i learn more about it?

Yes Very much! One of the best things about Mandrake is a tool called URPMI, which is
a wrapper for RPM just like YUM. It maintains a list of available packages, and
resolves those dreaded RPM dependencies automatically. The thing that sets URPMI apart
is the fact that Mandrake mirrors maintain an hdlist of RPM headers, so instead of
having to download every individual RPM header, they are all conveniently located in
one file, which makes setting up installs a snap. You can have your mirror via FTP,
HTTP, on a set of CDs, local to the hard drive, on an NFS share, even through an SSH
tunnel. It has a lot of very powerful features if you want them, but the sum of it is
this:

man urpmi for more information, google for easy urpmi for quick setup of mirrors. One
you're set up, when you know what you want to install (e.g. nmap), all you have to
type at the shell is:

urpmi nmap

and it will take care of everything else for you. There is even a very polished GUI
interface (rpmdrake) to URPMI similar to Windows Add/Remove Programs. This mini-HOWTO
is good information too if you're not fond of those dense MAN files:

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/eggnbacon/docs/urpmi-howto/

CJB> 2) related to #1 above, i noticed that mandrake 10.0 comes with
CJB> kde-3.2. the latest version of kde is 3.2.3. is there any "easy" way
CJB> to upgrade?

Yes! New updates are released often, and to do an update of all your installed
components, URPMI makes it easy. Just type this:

urpmi.update -a && urpmi --auto-select

and Mandrake will check for updates and automatically install them. You can even
schedule this in a cron job (great for servers).

If you like bleeding edge, there is the Cooker. Cooker is the development branch of
Mandrake. By setting up URPMI to include the cooker mirrors, you use the same URPMI
commands, but you get updates much more frequently. The downside is that they may be
less stable, but I've rarely had a problem.

I'm afraid I can't answer this question for you, since I run only linux natively (I
use XP too, just on a separate machine). I would assume since it is kernel related
then there might be a problem, but Mandrake updates tend to get released much faster
than Fedora, so it will probably be fixed quicker. You might want to check the
Mandrake Bugzilla at http://qa.mandrakesoft.com and find the issue (or file one
yourself), track it, and they'll let you know when a fix is found.

Mandrake Control Center is your friend :). While a lot of the server-related stuff is
still relegated to $FavoriteTextEditor, There are tons of configuration tools for
Hardware (harddrake), Networking (drakconnect), Software (rpmdrake, a GUI front-end
for URPMI)

CJB> thats all i can think of now. i guess my main reason for switching is
CJB> KDE and i'm guessing that all of mandrakes configuration tools use the

CJB> what do you all think?

CJB> thanks for the insights and advice!

Glad to help! Mandrake does focus on KDE, but all the other desktops are there if you
want them :)

Please post again with any other questions. Most of my knowledge is server-oriented,
but I'm sure others can help you out with the more desktop-like tools :).

It's called urpmi, and it is awesome if you get your sources set up properly.
You can start here:

The version included with 10.0 is a heavily patched 3.2.2, but 3.2.3 RPMS are
available for Mandrake 10.0 on ftp.kde.org.

As long as your partitions already exist, you'll be fine. if you need to
re-partition, your best bet is to use the 1st CD of 9.2 and boot to rescue
mode, then using the fdisk on that, make your partitions. I guess you could
run the installer for 9.2 up to the point of disk partitioning too to get a
gui. Just be careful if you do that and you have an LG CDROM drive. If you
do, to be safe use something else, like FC1 disk druid or the diskdrake in
PCLOS (mandrake style LiveCD).

yes, it is called mandrake Control Center, or MCC for short.

Actually, they are GTK2 based, but that is only so that they operate at a high
level of performance in a desktop environments. Since GTK is lighter weight
than QT, they work well in KDE and GNOME, as well as the other lightweight
DM's.

It's the editor. Standard methodology is:
save the new file under a temporary name
rename the old file to the backup name
rename the new file to the correct name
That does break hard links, so usually there are also preferences to
make them do the backup by copying the file.

Some big OSs do the backups themselves, but we're talking mainframes and
minis. VMS, George... Try googling "File Generation Number".

One of the best error messages of all time. MaxiMOP was an operating
system that ran on top of George on ICL1900 mainframes. (If you'd ever
used George, you'd know why.) As an OS, MaxiMOP needed to keep a large
number of files open, but George limited it to something low. To get
round this MaxiMOP renamed files it had "open" to "MAXIFILE", with
different file generation numbers. Of course that only made it harder,
but still possible, for someone in the George world to open the file
and make it unavailable to MaxiMOP. MaxiMOP would then tell its user
that the "File Has Mysteriously Disappeared."

management like and where can i learn more about it?

2) related to #1 above, i noticed that mandrake 10.0 comes with
kde-3.2. the latest version of kde is 3.2.3. is there any "easy" way
to upgrade?

3) there is some issue about the new kernel and dual booting with winxp
(i've read about it on the fedora mailing list). does mandrake have a
similar problem? it would seem like the answer is yes, since its a 2.6
kernel problem.

4) i'm tired of manual configuring things with vim...;) since mandrake
is suppose to be the leader in "linux desktop computing", i'm hoping
that there are gui configuration tools for pretty much >everything<. is
this true?

thats all i can think of now. i guess my main reason for switching is
KDE and i'm guessing that all of mandrakes configuration tools use the
KDE (or QT) libraries.

what do you all think?
thanks for the insights and advice!

Justin, as an update to this, what I did was go to a friends box and try to
telnet to my ip address. Only once did I get a login box, however, it
wasn't for my system but a login box for my modem. I was able to log into
the modem once, other attempts after that showed connection refused. The
same with a ping. Telnet asked for a user id/password, entered the correct
one and got a connection refused. I had the firestarter gui up during this
and when I got back there were no hits shown on the firewall log and
nothing showing in my syslog. Therefore its my conclusion that the three
open ports are for modem configuration and not actaully on my box. Right
or wrong?

This is funny. I turned off "Start arts sound server" in the kde
config gui and now it works.

So just 'cause things were all ok, I changed my hostname and setup a
static ip. Sure enough, I broke the internet connection and the lan
connection all in one swell foop.

I recovered with a mix of gui and cli that would make an "expert"
cringe, but it worked.

Sometimes I tickle me.

Thanks for the information, it was very helpful. I think I will go for the

I was able to stealth port 113 by adding a new rule with these parameters you

but that didn't work.

Probably didn't matter that much did it?

I'm not sure whether the Apache2 issues were resolved either. Since all I ever
do with servers for anyone is to tell them to hire a network specialist after
they're installed, I'm only vaguely aware of what issues you mean. But that
would probably be obvious.

You are correct, logins *should be* a once in a blue moon occurrence; but some
people (me) use their own systems to format new customer hard drives, load
version trees (freshly rsynced) so that ftp or CD installs are not required,
set up a current "Windows Utilities" directory so that anyone that forces me
to load that OS has a firewalled/current anti-virus enabled system before it
ever connects to a network of any sort.

With that in mind, and the hours involved, I _must_ have a log in sound to
wake me up.

Know what I mean?

It didn't help that I never said I was on 9.2 on this box. I'd

Hi Justin,

No on nano but I do use vi in console and kwrite in kde.
Both make a back up after I modify the file.

I'll take a look for switchs in both and see what I can find.

I wish this were the case.
I think the problem might be due to mandrake control center. In order to
setup the wireless card I did

modprobe ndiswrapper
loadndisdriver blah blah blah blah
iwconfig wlan0 power off
iwconfig wlan0 key open X
iwconfig wlan0 essid "House"
ifconfig wlan0 192.168.1.105
route add default gw 192.168.1.1

When I go to Mandrake Control Center to check what the internet settings
are it has different settings for wlan0 then what I manually configured.
Is there a way to maybe turn off the mcc internet configuration, or at
least point me towards what files I need to modify to get the settings in
line?

Nope, the other computers on the network are able to ping the router
wireless or not.

I was but I just disabled it - no affect.

Not from my computer. Any attempt to fire up a browser just sits and
spins. Any attempt at pinging IP's outside of the network returns a
"network not available" error. (Or something like that)
Other computers using the wireless connection work fine

Again, not from my computer but the other wireless computers are okay.

Do you modify it with emacs or nano(pico)? if so, they automatically make backups.
There's a command line switch to disable this behavior if you want it to.

capture works just fine as long as video card support is there, a bttv848

(it will install xawtv, in most recent versions of Mandake)

Assumptions:

You're using the default zones of loc (inside), net (outside), and fw
(firewall/computer).

You want to stealth this port on your firewall to the outside world.

Using Shorewall 2.x
-

Real simple. In your /etc/shorewall/rules file, simply add this line:

DROPnet fw tcp 11

Restart and you're good to go.

Some notes
-
DROP will "stealth" the port, but you can always use REJECT to actively refuse the
connection. I personally think the security difference is negligible and it is better
to use REJECT for its testing benefits (The Shorewall guys agree with me)

The Shorewall Documentation is pretty good, and available at:
http://www.shorewall.net/Documentation_Index.html

Also, Mandrake has a product (called Mandrake Network Firewall), which has a VERY nice
web interface to shorewall. You can get the RPMs for free if you're running 10.0 by
typing urpmi mnf. This installs a lot of other stuff though, so I would recommend only
doing it on a computer that will be a dedicated firewall.

Hope that helps! Post if it worked for you or not so future archive readers can know
if this was a working solution :)

This is at least the fourth time in the past week that you have posted a

suggestions as to how you might solve your problem. Have you tried any of
those? What happened? Also, other than you are attempting to get 10.0
PowerPack up and running, you have provided no information on your system.
Please tell us about your hardware, particularly:

CPU
Motherboard
RAM
Video card -- there are all kinds of nvidia cards out there, so be specific
about chipset and memory. Is it onboard or a separate card?
Monitor/display
Any other OS installed?
Hard drive(s)
Laptop or desktop?

FWIW, I'm a bit dubious about the nv driver being the source of your trouble.
The nvidia drivers provide various performance enhancements, particularly 3D,
but the plain old nv drivers should give you some kind of usable display.

Unbelievably weird. Almost like having to reboot to make any changes be
effective when you run Windows.

KDE always uses arts for sound. But the _sound system_ (the arts daemon) uses
either ALSA or OSS drivers. I think that you, since the ALSA module is built
into the 2.6.xx kernels, may be better to have xmms use the arts plug-in so
KDE can control the priority, but switch the sound system
(menu>system>configuration>sound>Sound System) to ALSA. Then there shouldn't
be any more scheduling conflicts. My "KDE is starting" is clear, so are the
media players for movies, mp3s, oggs, and disks.

StrangeI made changes directly in the .config file, restarted x
and got nothing but noise on login and xmms both in .mp3s and
shoutcast this time.

I changed the config back to oss from the xmms gui and now all is
working except kde login.

My guess is that kde is using arts and xmms is now using oss.

Does it matter? Couldn't care less about login noise.

Also the shoutcast quality seems better now.

OK, I've removed the 1470 prefix and am having less trouble, but it's
too soon to say, but I'm hopeful.

I'm thinking if this holds up, then maybe the problem is that kppp
handles prefix numbers on the initial dialup but not subsequently on
redial due to a cutoff.Could that make sense ?
Somehow it does not handle the 1470 prefix on redial, but that of course
does not account for why I am getting poor email download in the first
place, that is, that I'm getting cut off during a pop3 download.
Wanadoo my ISP may be rationalising the use of their equipement, I don't
know, though I strongly suspect it, but they would hardly want to cut
users off mid email download. That I find unlikely. It is not in their
best interest. Especially high traffic user like me. I maybe get 400/
800 emails a day (about 1/3 is spam though) and they want to get this
traffic off their servers ASAP for obvious reasons.

I tried Stephens AT string, AT &F &C1 &D2 E1 Q0 V1,it hung,
Not sure where to put ATH0 for the hangup string .

Shot in the dark here as it's a long time since I was on dial up but I needed
to use 1470 with BT Internet . I needed to put 2 commas between 1470 and the
rest of number so it dialled 1470,,0845 the ,, creates a pause (IIRC
each comma is 1 second)

Thanks, Charlie. I got the config file. I'll compare them and see
what's wrong here.

[newbie] Multiple monitor setup

2004-07-10 Thread Martin Foster
In my Linux box I have 2 graphics cards:
1. nVidia RIVA TNT2 (AGP)
2. 3dfx Voodoo Banshee (PCI)
I have seperate monitors plugged into each graphics card, the idea being
to use MDK 10's multiple monitor support. I've twiddled and fiddled with
the setup and I just cannot get both monitors to work at the same time.
Can some kind soul give me clear concise instructions how to set this up.

Thanks in advance .

Why are you using "1470" in front of your ISP's phone number?
Judging by your email address, your ISP is FreeServe. When I had an
account with them, it was unnecessary to use "1470".
Freeserve is now Wanadoo - or, judging by their service, Wanadon't!
I use the same number for dialup, and queried this with them - they
said the 1470 is an essential part of their dialup number, or I'd
get charged for the call by BT!

H, here's the result of a search for "1470" on BeeTee's Web site:
"A customer with Permanent Number Withhold on their line can release
their number on a per call basis by dialling 1470 before dialling the
number of the person they would like to call. This means that the
person they are calling will be able to see the caller's number on
Caller Display or be told it through the free 1471 service."
Heres wanadoo's technical support reply to my email last night,
---
Dear John,
Thank you for your email.
The 1470 is only needed if your caller identity is witheld - it usually
will not cause any problem whether the number is witheld or not.
If you have any further queries then please do not hesitate to get in
contact with us again.
Kind Regards

And so I'm flabbergasted.
Never would of thought it.
But there it is.
and so you think I should remove 1470 then ?
I don't see any harm in removing it.
However, I don't think that's what causing the problems.
Have you had a look at my other suggestions yet?

I'm sending you my xmms/config file off list Lee. I don't know if it will help
you or not but I got the kinks out of the sound early this morning.

Running KDE as desktop manager:

Installed xmms-arts, installed xmms-kde, changed the plug-in to artis rather
than OSS or ALSA and set the sound system to ALSA. Logged out, logged back
in. XMMS is playing clearly from a 30 GB 'sound' partition (all OGG files;
I'm a music nut.) as I type this.

What I did may have been moot though. There were a few KDE updates for cooker
today. Or last night maybe.

Config file on it's way. It's 2 KB.
