I always specify -vo x11 when running mplayer.

Is there a place to enter the path to the hdlist.cz?
Like..

LOCATION:
ftp://mirrors.secsup.org/pub/linux/mandrake/Mandrakelinux/official/10.0/i586/Mandrake/RPMS

PATH TO HDLIST:
../base/hdlist.cz

I think it should automatically probe for it but, perhaps its not
maybe you have to enter it manually.

Note: Just a thought. I have not tried the 10.1 rc1 mini cd install
myself.

That's interesting.

I had the same problem, despite "guest ok = yes". I fixed it by using
"security = share"

Now the printer status is "opening" instead of "Access Denied, Unable to
Connect" and all computers on my network can print without a problem.

This is fine for my current situation, but I would have prefered to have
security = user, but still have the printer be publicly available. I
couldn't get it to work that way, though.

I checked again, the fact that you were able to copy it without any
severe consequences got me a bit grumpy. I can't be _that_ stupid...
So: you can drag&drop within ext3, but my main partition for backups and
stuff is fat32, so win can see it as well. Copying ~/.Mail from ext3 to
fat32 produced error messages such as:
Could not write to
/home/keszand/gumnut/.Mail/inbox/cur/1088515714.4212.c1Plb:2,S
It didn't look like an mbox (I didn't know the difference at the time),
so (of course) I said: Auto Skip
I guess I _was_ that stupid, but hope it'll keep someone else from doing
the same.

which she learned to chew when she was playing Nicaraguan summer ball.
She told the writers, "They were so mean to me down there you couldn't
write it in your newspaper. I took a gun everywhere I went, even to bed.

elected Gentleman Jim, the Sparrow's P.R. guy, to bite off a chunk and
tell them how it tasted, and as he sat and chewed it tears ran down his

With packages that come as a tarball, I would rely more on the documentation
that comes with the package. In particular, look for files called INSTALL and
README (go figure). In the case of the Mozilla browser, IIRC, you just run an
'install' script, similar to how you would do it on that other OS.

I'm not aware of any specific tutorials, but you could try google.com/linux. The
problem with that approach is that there are such a variety of ways and means of
installation when you are dealing with tarballs that one or two tutorials simply
wouldn't cover it all, or would be superfluous given the documentation that
comes with most such packages.

Good for you! It's sometimes nice to be able to run the latest and greatest
without always relying on someone to build an RPM, or run something that no one
has bothered to make an RPM for, though that's getting rare with people like
Charles around ;-)

In general, the ./configure, make, make install routine is...well...pretty
routine, although as Stephen pointed out, you may want to use this
switch with the configure script: '--prefix=/usr', as Mandrake tends to package
things this way with its RPM's and it works better if everything is consistent.
Many source packages install to some other dir like /usr/local or whatever, and
Mandrake may not 'like' that. And hey, if it doesn't work, there's always 'make
uninstall' and start over, no?

> If I run into problems then I get with list.

I think that's your best bet :-) You'll learn more through trial and error (it's
fairly uncommon to 'break' anything, unless you try to install some critical
system library from source, but it doesn't sound like you are aiming in that
direction yet) and bouncing questions off people on the list who've been there
before.

Strange things can happen.
I had no problems with copying mail to my backup partition and
reinstalling MDK. I have even manually copied files from KMail to
Evolution (maildir format) with no problems at all.

Nevertheless it's a good advice.

Before Mandrake , try to boot the computer with a LIVE-CD KNOPPIX
distro which seems to be great by autoconfigure hardware devices . After
boot take a look in /etc directory and find the X config file (

Hi there.
I've just switched from my 12 years old Samsung SyncMaster to Belinea
103050 (it's not so new stuff but try to compare to the previous one).
And the question is how to set the monitor in MDK10?

I've tried MCC and I've got something set (Belinea 103050) but it
doesn't seem to work perfectly fine. I cannot set it any bigger that
1024x768 though I know it can go up to 1600x1200.

And the font looks kinda strange though it's hard to describe what's so
strange about it.

PS. I had no idea how dark the kinescope (or should I call it tube?) has
gone in my old Samsung till I have plugged this one in.

This is a bit off-topic maybe. Somebody mentioned SpinRite the other
day in the context of disk recovery so I investigated the grc.com
site. Apparently SpinRite 6.0 supports Linux filesystems via a DOS program,
but the user does not need to own DOS. It sounded like worthwhile
insurance, so I paid for the licence and downloaded the .exe and went
back to the site for information on how to use it. Nothing doing, so
I emailed support only to get the runaround. No actual help, just a
pointer to the author's email service. On closer inspection it turns
out that he does not answer individual queries, so support is actually
non-existent. And, his last email bulletin dates back to the beginning
of 2002, before SpinRite 6 and before Linux support. ??

My assumption was that the file should be turned into an ISO and burnt
to CD. That would leave the question of DOS. The files at
bootdisk.com all seem to be .exes, which I assumed are self-extracting
versions of DOS to be copied to a floppy, which would require Windows
or DOS to run, and a FAT partition as well.
The grc.com is directed to Windows users and all tools are written for Windows
users.
I don't think the author expected Linux users would download it as well.
The Q&A section is still answering Spinrite 5.0 related questions, and the answer upon if Spinrite supports Linux in that case
is ofcourse wrong, yes 5.0 does NOT support Linux, 6.0 does, but the executable currently only works with windows.
It can be used to create a bootable floppy where it installs the Spinrite disk examinator. The floppy boots with FreeDOS and
gives you the opportunity to recover or maintain your harddrive.
(Like recovering erased files that weren't supposed to be erased)
Mr. Gibson may need some notice that his tool is not only acquired by Windows users.

It may or may not work under Wine, i don't know for sure, but one who has SR 6.0 can
test this.
I have SR 6.0, but currently i don't have XWindows installed anymore (sorry, installed
Trustix :P)

Lanman disseminated the following:

Do the './configure' and let us know how it goes. What is the application
you
are intending to install, if I might ask?
Joe; You may have misunderstood John. He seems to be looking for a good
source of information where he can learn how to install tar.gz files,
not a good location to learn how to install source files that are
compressed into tar.gz files.

You mean like a Slackware package? Perhaps...we'll see when he replies, I
suppose.
Hello
Thanks for the responses. I would like to install mozilla sunbird and
the updated version of Planner. I am looking for a manual or tutorial to
use. I have been using mandrake for about a year now and have learned to
do various things as they came up. I guess you might say that i am at
the tarball stage now. I like to study the manuals and try to work it
out for myself. If I run into problems then I get with list. This has
become a hobby for me. Again thanks for the responses.
John

Re: [newbie] SpinRite 6.0

2004-09-07 Thread SnapafunFrank
Len Lawrence wrote:

So, should I ask for my money back?

Short answer - YES!
