1.) You might want to check to see if your firewall is allowing port
21/tcp to be opened at all even...

2.) Install Webmin (if not already installed) - it has great features
for dealing with your ProFTP installation and configuration and allows
for much more clear cut and concise changes to be made with very little
knowledge necessary. Seriously.

3.) Try checking/changing the two above points, and then restart your
xinetd daemon and see what happens next...ay?

Cheers!

[newbie] ProFTPD not Jiggy

2004-10-30 Thread Eric Scott
Yo people. I've got a Mandrake Linux 9.2 server running ProFTP v1.28. I
thought I had it all set up to run with anonymous FTP access (Using a
sample /etc/proftpd.config from proftpd.org for now), and starting through
xinetd... but apparently it isn't set up right, or at least it's not
wanting
to be just jiggy with me. Here's my setup and what happens when I try to
access the ftp site:

My config file is a standard example (temporaraly) that can be found at
http://proftpd.org/docs/configs/anonymous.conf

After copying the above file in to /etc/proftpd.conf, I restarted
xinetd. (I
know next to nothing about xinetd or how to run proftpd under it, but for
what it's worth, there's a 'proftpd-xinetd' file in /etc/xinetd.d/)

Here's what gets my relatively-novice Linux mind boggled. Something
seems to
be running, but I only sorta get an ftp connection when the client connects:

At this point 'netstat -a | grep ftp' gives:
tcp0 0 *:ftp *:* LISTEN
Seems chipper, from what I can gather from the limited proftpd howtos I've
found. When I start to connect with a client and do netstat I get (domains
are aliased):
tcp0 0 [MyDomain]:ftp [ClientDomain] ESTABLISHED
The client says "Connected to [MyDomain] ([MyIP])
A few seconds later it goes:
421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection

Now this is probably way too much of the wrong info needed to solve my
problem, which I suspect is relatively simple. I'm obviously new to FTP
and
fairly new to Linux; but I need this FTP server up and (eventually)
configured to my requirements.
   any help?
  Thanx,
   SigmaChi

If X11/XOrg is not starting, then there is a problem either with your
video driver, or the monitor settings; what I would recommend is that
you make sure you know what monitor you have (and it's settings) along
with what video card you have; login to the system as "root", and once
logged in, run XFdrake; make all the necessary changes (and test them);
once that is done, you should be able to reboot the system and login to
whichever desktop you so desire (or what you have installed).

What error messages do you get from 'startx'?

Did you configure X during installation (the 'summary' screen, IIRC)?

Done and Done. ^_^ Thanks for the suggestion! Meanwhile, everyone who
missed my comment in the other thread I had going... please make a
point to submit a feature request to the gmail team for the option of
disabling the reply-to field if you haven't already! And bug your
gmail using friends to do so also. ^_^ If we flood them with requests
for it, they're bound to submit, yes?

Then I suppose it's time to bug the gmail team. Very weird though,
considering it's let me select a blank field for the replyto address.
Oh well, I'll bug them about it now. Thanks for checking for me

[newbie] (OT) Reguarding reply-to and the gmail address

2004-10-30 Thread Amy
Hey everyone!

I've noticed a lot of people have been complaining about the reply-to
address issue with gmail. I think I've fixed it on mine. If gmail
users go into settings, there are two options for the reply-to, their
gmail address, and a blank field which one is expected to put
something in. Well, gmail seems to have accepted me selecting the
field without filling it in with anything... if anyone would like to
confirm this works correctly (try replying to my message here), we can
find out if this is indeed the correct solution to the problem and
start sharing it with other gmail users on the list. ^_^

Hope this helps!

JoeHill,

In my case, I have an old computer without dozens of GB on the HD. On
the other hand, my ISP does not allow me to check my e-mail when the
Internet connection is established through a different ISP... so, I
cannot read my own e-mail archives when I am at work, for instance.

Brosing files w/Konqueror as root I right-clicked on on a .cfg file to set
default acton to always open w/kedit.
After that, when I click on a directory (as root) I get an error message
saying that KDEinit could not launch kedit.
Where is the right placeto correct this stupid mistake ?
Looking thru System/Configuration/KDE/Components/File associations does'nt

b.t.w. Konqueror as user works as normal.

You guys with gmail addresses are a pain in the neck ;-). I know you cannot
change the reply-to setting, so I only blame you for using the system, not
setting it up properly. This is the third time in the last twenty-four hours
I have had to resend a reesponse to the list that I found in my sent after
not seeing it show up on the list. In every case, the poster was sending
from a gmail address.

You can either download the entire distribution tree from an ftp mirror and
install from hard disk, or you can install directly from the dist tree, which
will only download the packages you are installing.

To do that, there is a floppy image that will boot and start the installation
process and you just point the installer to the location that contains the
distribution tree. There are seperate floppy images for each kind of
install you might want to do, hard disk, network, cd-rom (for machines that
cannot boot from cd). There is also a small boot.iso which combines all of
the features of the various floppy images. Just burn it and boot from it for
any kind of install.

Of my 3 Mdk boxes, one is a Matrox G400 dual-head (of which I don't use the
second one), one is an NVidia, which seems to have been problematic all the
way, and the third, that has the 10.1 install, is ATi. The Matrox may not be
fast, but it is utterly trouble-free.

Kaj,
How long did it take at which (average) download speed?

That's what's been stopping me until now...the prospect of looking at a
useless box hogging my bandwidth for a week or so.

[newbie] A short notice to gmail users

2004-10-30 Thread Kaj Haulrich
I know you can't get rid of your "reply-to" field in gmail, which
causes all our relplies to go to you instead of the list. This
severely handicaps you, as it hides replies from other list
members, including some who might know a better answer.

So, would it be very inconvenient to add a signature, something like
this :

"I use gmail, so if you reply, please take a look at the "To" field"

Just a suggestion ?

The aboslute easiest way is to use the iso's. They are not
available for download yet, but you can get them (4 CDs) here :
http://linuxcentral.com/catalog/?prod_code=L000-296&id=C1CQEBKnWD3C
6

But, here is what I did :

1. As root, edit the file "/etc/mandrakelinux-release" and change
Community to Official. Save it.

2. Download kernel-2.6.8.1-12mdk form a mirror .I used :
ftp://ftp.proxad.net/pub/Distributions_Linux/Mandrakelinux/official
/10.1/i586/media/main/

3. Install it alongside your old one. Re-boot into the new one.

4. As root : "urpmi.removemedia -a"

5. Go here : http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/

6. Define your sources for 10.1 Official, and proceed as
 instructed.

7. As root : "urpmi.update -a && urpmi --auto-select".

8. As root : "rpm --rebuilddb && update-menus -a -n && udpdatedb"

That's all. When comparing my new rpms to the ones on the mirrors,
it seems that I run 10.1. Official.

I actually don't know if step 8 is required, but it won't harm.

This is also avoided by "upgrading" with the install routine on CD1. Downer is
that it replaces the existing urpmi database as opposed to just being added

They work the same way the nvidia binary drivers do, in that they must be
matched to the kernel. I think the Club Downloads should have the ATI
drivers for every "officially" released Mandrake kernel, so -12mdk should be
available. If you don't have CLub access, then you might try installing the
drivers using ATI's proprietary installer.

I don't have a lot of experience with the ATI drivers, because the one machine
I own with an ATI card works satisfactorily with dri since XFree 4.3 and any
time I tried the ATI binary drivers the machine became unstable. Using CAE's
xorg packages for 10.0, everything works nicely, so I decided to leave well
enough alone.

Every other machine I administer either has an nvidia graphics card, or some
other older low-end card that makes high-performance video a non-issue. Most
of those boxes run headless as a server anyway.

Re: [newbie] Comparing md5sums in 10.0

2004-10-30 Thread John Richard Smith
Marek Pawinski wrote:
I picked this up, i don't know if it pertains to the issue:
Bad Md5sums? (maybe not)
Just burned a CD from an ISO image and the md5sum doesn't match?

The CD may be just fine... what you may be experiencing is padding
which alters the md5sum. Before throwing away the CD and cursing, try
this:

   cmp /dev/cdrom ISO_image
 For example, I got a bad md5sum from my 9.2beta1 CD1:
$ dd if=/dev/cdrom | md5sum
1333216+0 records in
1333216+0 records out
e82309091ad6b44a1218dc6f33c3b058 -
It should be:
7a0479dc917d35bd822cecb558c8d432
 So, I tried:
$ cmp /dev/cdrom /ISO/Mandrake/MandrakeLinux-9.2beta1-CD1.i586.iso
cmp: EOF on /ISO/Mandrake/MandrakeLinux-9.2beta1-CD1.i586.iso
The EOF on the ISO image means that the CD image is an EXACT copy PLUS
padding. An EOF on /mnt/cdrom would have meant the CD was incomplete.

Just to prove the CD was really OK, I issued this piped string of
commands:

$ dd if=/dev/cdrom | head -c 682575872 | md5sum
1333162+0 records in
1333161+0 records out
7a0479dc917d35bd822cecb558c8d432 -
Got the correct md5sum... :^) BTW, 682575872 is simply the length of
that particular ISO image.

So, more generically, we can use this pipe stream:
  dd if=/dev/cdrom | head -c `stat --format=%s ISO_image` | md5sum
i.e.,
$ dd if=/dev/cdrom | head -c `stat --format=%s
/ISO/Mandrake/MandrakeLinux-9.2beta1-CD1.i586.iso` | md5sum
1333162+0 records in
1333161+0 records out
7a0479dc917d35bd822cecb558c8d432 -

For the purists, the size can be passed as an argument to dd like
this (not verified):

  dd if=/dev/cdrom bs=`stat --format=%s ISO_image` | md5sum
Marek
Hi Marek,
I've been giving your CL examples a try today,
been a bit busy lately,
anyway this is how it worked for me.
cmp /dev/scd0 /mnt/Win-g/disc3.iso
cmp: EOF on /mnt/Win-g/disc3.iso
Now this result surprized me.
I used cdrecord to create the installation CD
I don't remember using any command that
would of added padding to the burnt disc.
I use -dao almost without exception, nothing
else that adds Zero's etc between data tracks.
But still this says I did.
I just wondered why ?
and what would it return if an exact copy ?
then,
dd if=/dev/scd0 | head -c 669016064 | md5sum
5ad870e696953f4bbd0a91936873890e -
1306673+0 records in
1306672+0 records out
which agrees with,
5ad870e696953f4bbd0a91936873890e disc3.iso
the correct md5sum
I note you can pass the iso file size direct to head CL
OK, so everything looks fine so far.
Now for the problem,
dd if=/dev/scd0 bs=`stat --format=%s /mnt/Win-g/disc3.iso` | md5sum
1+1 records in
1+1 records out
526cfebe2c2da7c6e464bed37969e4c9 -
OK, I did something obvious wrong.
but what ?
By the way, NICE !
I like it.
John

The big difference is that commercial apps like nvidia/ati drivers, winmodem

Think I mentioned this before, but terminal-server (drakTermServ) sounds
very similar to what you're trying to accomplish. (diskless client

Sadly, those of us that loved SmartSuite are badly served. Few programs, even
for windows, ever had import/expert filters for it. Your choice seems to be

1) export your 123 files to .xls, which is read by all spreadsheets (this is
the way I did it)

2) run SmartSuite under win4lin - which also works. I did this later, for a

If you need to share data between windows and linux, create a partition
formated as fat32 by the Mandrake install (choose 'expert' when you get to
the partitioning - create the ones you know you need like this one and /home,
which will hold all your personal config files and any data you don't direct
to the shared one, and then leave the install to take care of the rest
under /)

No. You can configure samba any way you want, after the install. Just
install both server and client if you need a 2-way system.

It's always a good idea to back up your data, of course, but then I'm
paranoid ;-) The main thing seems to be to keep windows from hogging the
whole drive - which can be rectified, but causes more work. Good luck.

[newbie] Reinstallation Help Required

2004-10-30 Thread SME Server Admin
Hi Folks

I have finally got my mitts on a replacement 80gb Hdd for this linux machine,
MDK10.

However, before I splash ahead I'd like some advice and stuff

1. It's going to be dual boot so I'd need to install the Win98se first (in a
20gb partition) and then install Mdk telling it to leave the 98 partition
right? This will assume that Mdk will sort it's own partitions up right. I'd
like to keep the personal files on another partition, is that feasable or is
it worth just leaving MDK to get on with it!

2. Samba. Assuming I want to have a samba shared area do I need to create that
as a seperate drive??

3. For keeping all my mail folders and everything is it OK to install the new
OS then move the info from the old hard drive to the right place on the new
hard drive?? Or do I have to do something else. I know when I last backed up
the mail folders k3b changed all the dots to underscores :( Windows had
problems recognising some files and that went a bit haywire for a bit.

4. is there anything else anyone here things I should do before the transfer??

Cheers, Elwyn

Awaiting your help before I proceed :)

Altho' thy teacher act not as he preaches,
 Yet ne'ertheless, if good, do what he teaches;
Good counsel, failing men may give, for why,

 Sudden Pow'r is apt to be insolent, Sudden Liberty saucy;
that behaves best which has grown gradually.

I have not specifically tested this.

Add a Contrib source for 10.1 and Claws will will be updated to the
appropriate release, sylpheed-claws-0.9.12a-3mdk

Charles

P.S., hint. hint can you help me adapt my site for 10.1?
