[newbie] ProFTPD not Jiggy
Yo people. I've got a Mandrake Linux 9.2 server running ProFTP v1.28. I thought I had it all set up to run with anonymous FTP access (Using a sample /etc/proftpd.config from proftpd.org for now), and starting through xinetd... but apparently it isn't set up right, or at least it's not wanting to be just jiggy with me. Here's my setup and what happens when I try to access the ftp site: My config file is a standard example (temporaraly) that can be found at http://proftpd.org/docs/configs/anonymous.conf After copying the above file in to /etc/proftpd.conf, I restarted xinetd. (I know next to nothing about xinetd or how to run proftpd under it, but for what it's worth, there's a 'proftpd-xinetd' file in /etc/xinetd.d/) Here's what gets my relatively-novice Linux mind boggled. Something seems to be running, but I only sorta get an ftp connection when the client connects: At this point 'netstat -a | grep ftp' gives: tcp0 0 *:ftp *:* LISTEN Seems chipper, from what I can gather from the limited proftpd howtos I've found. When I start to connect with a client and do netstat I get (domains are aliased): tcp0 0 [MyDomain]:ftp [ClientDomain] ESTABLISHED The client says "Connected to [MyDomain] ([MyIP]) A few seconds later it goes: 421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection Now this is probably way too much of the wrong info needed to solve my problem, which I suspect is relatively simple. I'm obviously new to FTP and fairly new to Linux; but I need this FTP server up and (eventually) configured to my requirements. any help? [newbie] (OT) Reguarding reply-to and the gmail address
Hey everyone! I've noticed a lot of people have been complaining about the reply-to address issue with gmail. I think I've fixed it on mine. If gmail users go into settings, there are two options for the reply-to, their gmail address, and a blank field which one is expected to put something in. Well, gmail seems to have accepted me selecting the field without filling it in with anything... if anyone would like to confirm this works correctly (try replying to my message here), we can find out if this is indeed the correct solution to the problem and start sharing it with other gmail users on the list. ^_^ Hope this helps! You can either download the entire distribution tree from an ftp mirror and install from hard disk, or you can install directly from the dist tree, which will only download the packages you are installing. To do that, there is a floppy image that will boot and start the installation process and you just point the installer to the location that contains the distribution tree. There are seperate floppy images for each kind of install you might want to do, hard disk, network, cd-rom (for machines that cannot boot from cd). There is also a small boot.iso which combines all of the features of the various floppy images. Just burn it and boot from it for any kind of install. -- /g Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com Join the Club : http://www.mandrakeclub.com

I know you can't get rid of your "reply-to" field in gmail, which causes all our relplies to go to you instead of the list. This severely handicaps you, as it hides replies from other list members, including some who might know a better answer. Just to prove the CD was really OK, I issued this piped string of commands: $ dd if=/dev/cdrom | head -c 682575872 | md5sum 1333162+0 records in 1333161+0 records out 7a0479dc917d35bd822cecb558c8d432 - Got the correct md5sum... :^) BTW, 682575872 is simply the length of that particular ISO image. So, more generically, we can use this pipe stream: dd if=/dev/cdrom | head -c `stat --format=%s ISO_image` | md5sum i.e., $ dd if=/dev/cdrom | head -c `stat --format=%s /ISO/Mandrake/MandrakeLinux-9.2beta1-CD1.i586.iso` | md5sum 1333162+0 records in 1333161+0 records out 7a0479dc917d35bd822cecb558c8d432 - For the purists, the size can be passed as an argument to dd like this (not verified): dd if=/dev/cdrom bs=`stat --format=%s ISO_image` | md5sum Marek Hi Marek, I've been giving your CL examples a try today, been a bit busy lately, anyway this is how it worked for me. cmp /dev/scd0 /mnt/Win-g/disc3.iso cmp: EOF on /mnt/Win-g/disc3.iso Now this result surprized me. I used cdrecord to create the installation CD I don't remember using any command that would of added padding to the burnt disc. I use -dao almost without exception, nothing else that adds Zero's etc between data tracks. But still this says I did. I just wondered why ? and what would it return if an exact copy ? then, dd if=/dev/scd0 | head -c 669016064 | md5sum 5ad870e696953f4bbd0a91936873890e - 1306673+0 records in 1306672+0 records out which agrees with, 5ad870e696953f4bbd0a91936873890e disc3.iso the correct md5sum I note you can pass the iso file size direct to head CL OK, so everything looks fine so far. Now for the problem, dd if=/dev/scd0 bs=`stat --format=%s /mnt/Win-g/disc3.iso` | md5sum 1+1 records in 1+1 records out 526cfebe2c2da7c6e464bed37969e4c9 - OK, I did something obvious wrong. but what ? By the way, NICE ! I like it. John Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com Join the Club : http://www.mandrakeclub.com

Sadly, those of us that loved SmartSuite are badly served. Few programs, even for windows, ever had import/expert filters for it. Your choice seems to be 1) export your 123 files to .xls, which is read by all spreadsheets (this is the way I did it) 2) run SmartSuite under win4lin - which also works. I did this later, for a compatibility issue with my daughter's work. I don't think you will get it to work under wine - I looked into that a couple of years ago, and it was said that it was well-nigh impossible. I want to try the ATi drivers, but see that on the CE disk (I still haven't completed the OE download) it says that it has drivers for the -10 kernel, whereas I'm running the -12 kernel. [newbie] Reinstallation Help Required
Hi Folks I have finally got my mitts on a replacement 80gb Hdd for this linux machine, MDK10. However, before I splash ahead I'd like some advice and stuff 1. It's going to be dual boot so I'd need to install the Win98se first (in a 20gb partition) and then install Mdk telling it to leave the 98 partition right? This will assume that Mdk will sort it's own partitions up right. I'd like to keep the personal files on another partition, is that feasable or is it worth just leaving MDK to get on with it! 2. Samba. Assuming I want to have a samba shared area do I need to create that as a seperate drive?? 3. For keeping all my mail folders and everything is it OK to install the new OS then move the info from the old hard drive to the right place on the new hard drive?? Or do I have to do something else. I know when I last backed up the mail folders k3b changed all the dots to underscores :( Windows had problems recognising some files and that went a bit haywire for a bit. 4. is there anything else anyone here things I should do before the transfer?? Cheers, Elwyn Awaiting your help before I proceed :) Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com Join the Club : http://www.mandrakeclub.com
